A McCain Leader In Michigan Switches To Thompson

One of the earliest Michigan politicians to formally endorse Sen. John McCain has defected to Fred Thompson.

Chris Ward, the House minority floor leader, told colleagues yesterday that he'd made the switch.

In Feb., Ward formally endorsed McCain and was asked to sit on his statewide steering committee.

Republicans in Michigan say that Thompson volunteers are calling every elected official and activist -- even those who have endorsed other candidates -- and urging them to support what they call the race's only true "electable conservative."

A few days ago, a key county chairman in South Carolina cited immigration in withdrawing his endorsement of McCain.

I have been predicting we will see a Thompson/McCain ticket. Strong VP's are the rage now so there would be little ego loss for McCain

He would be excellent as a VP to Thompson plus it is better than just being a loser. McCain is no loser. His guts have guts.

I also think that Fred Thompson will gain a lot of traction, and for good reason. I actually think a Thompson/Giuliani ticket would be better than what you mentioned though. Giuliani has more to add to such a team in terms of governance skills, creativity and ideas. I think McCain wouldnt really add that much to Thompson, which is why he is the one losing the most support to him right now. Giuliani could bring in moderates and independents.

A quick question. How is a minor congressman switching support to a candidate who hasn't said he's running a problem? Republicans have done everything possible to ensure they will lose big in '08. So to me, who's endorsing who is irrelevant.
