An Evening With The Romneys

13 Jul 2007 09:03 am

WOLFEBORO, NH -- All I can really say is that Mitt Romney, wife Ann and four of five sons welcomed a contingent of the national political press corps to their Lake Winnipesaukee home last evening for... well, we agreed to keep the universe beyond threshold of the driveway off-the-record, so I won't say.

These events drive media critics crazy. The theory is that such OTR get togethers are the currency of a press corps that is too willing to cozy up to sources, or to powerful people, and they inevitably reduce the critical distance that is so crucial to a functioning press.

I strongly disagree, for so many reasons, but I generally tend not to pay much heed to theorists who aren't practitioners of the actual craft of political journalism.

Except that one major media organization refuses to allow its reporters to attend events like these to avoid even the appearance of cozying up to powerful interests. (It rhymes with Shoo Fork Thymes).

I'll try to develop some ideas on this topic throughout the year. And if you're _really_ that curious about what went on on the shores of New Hampshire's largest lake last night, I think I convinced one of the Romney brothers to blog about it.

If not for David Broder dining on quail at Karl Rove's table, or Condi and Gwen having a delightful dinner together, the American people would be completely in the dark about the dedication and competence of these noble public servants.

I like how you manage to dismiss literally all criticism of your profession, and in fact the entire genre of criticism, by making it an exclusive endeavor for members of its club. Very slick.

1.) What are your reasons for disagreeing? I understand the need of cultivating relationships with potential sources, but cozying up to a presidential candidate seems a bit much. I don't think journalists should be friends with Mitt Romney or any other candidate.

2.) Seems to me like these kind of events have the potential to lead to things like the ludicrously unbalanced coverage John McCain got in 2000. This wasn't a result of off the record schmoozing, but the press was so charmed by McCain that they often "decided" to "take him off the record" on the Straight Talk Express, even though McCain said everything was on the record (scroll down to Part Three). That is, of course, ludicrous.

3.) Many "practitioners of the actual craft of political journalism" are smart, hardworking, and fair. Many others are stupid, lazy, and shallow, and have been putting out absolutely awful work for the past 15 years. Just something to keep in mind when these issues come up.

From today's Washington Post:

Alberto Gonzales and Bob Woodward having a long, friendly lunch yesterday at Rosa Mexicano. The AG and the Post author, along with their wives, were spotted having Mexican food, no margaritas. The couples split the check.

Except that one major media organization refuses to allow its reporters to attend events like these to avoid even the appearance of cozying up to powerful interests. (It rhymes with Shoo Fork Thymes).

That's pretty funny, given what happened with Judith Miller.

Does this post carry any relevance until you actually do "develop some ideas on the topic"?

Just wondered what your journalistic point is here...
