Catholic V. Protestant In Iowa?

31 Jul 2007 04:45 pm

One of the less publicized, most salient change in politics since the 1980s has been the political coalition built by conservative Catholics and evangelicals even as the doctrinally-sensitive Southern Baptist Convention became the dominant force in evangelical politics. The '04 re-election of George W. Bush showed how powerful that coalition can be.

Will it endure? Sam Brownback is a Catholic convert, Mike Huckabee is a Southern Baptist, and Mitt Romney is a member of the LDS Church. There have been skirmishes so far between supporters of Brownback and Huckabee on one side and Romney on the other. But until this week, the fact that Brownback is a Catholic (convert) and Huckabee is a Protestant hasn't been deemed relevant by anyone.

The following e-mail was sent to a number of Iowa evangelicals. The author is Rev. Tim Rude, a pastor at the Walnut Creek Community Church in Windsor Heights, Iowa.

Here's the full text of his e-mail:
Dear XXX and XXX,
>
> Pastors XXX and XXX relayed to me that you are both supporting Sam
> Brownback for President. It sounds like there is, in fact, regular
> contact with Senator Brownback and yourselves. I applaud your
> participation in the selection of the next president of the United
> States. It is our duty as Christians to take our stewardship of
> this country extremely serious. And I am sure that you are aware
> that our entire Walnut Creek leadership staff, to my knowledge, is
> supporting Mike Huckabee.
>
> On July 20, we drove up to Ames and spoke with pastors XXX and XXX
> about our position and were well received. However, it sounds like
> you are the men we need to communicate with about our advocacy.
>
> I am interested in your decision to support this candidate. As you
> know, both candidates are down in the polls. Nation-wide polls
> show Brownback at 1% and Huckabee at 3% amongst Republican candidates.
>
> About 3 weeks ago, I met the Governor personally. I learned that
> he was a Southern Baptist pastor for 12 years. The Governor told
> us that he concluded that people needed to gain positions in the
> government in order to safeguard our Christian values. People need
> to make that sacrifice. He served as LT. Governor prior to serving
> as governor for 10 and a half years.
>
> The second time he ran for Gov. he gained over 48% of the black
> vote. That is remarkable and it conveys he can really broaden his
> base. I think he is electable. He is a remarkable communicator.
> I believe as people listen to him, just like in Arkansas, they will
> like what he says and like him personally. I have listened to him
> in private and over the radio. He is the best communicator I have
> ever heard run for office. President Reagan was a great
> communicator but he did not as closely represent a Christian
> perspective as does Huckabee, although Reagan did a very good job.
>
> Huckabee is an evangelical. He has not learned how to speak to
> evangelicals; i.e. Bush 41 & 43. He is one of us. I know
> Senator Brownback converted to Roman Catholicism in 2002. Frankly,
> as a recovering Catholic myself, that is all I need to know about
> his discernment when compared to the Governor's. I don't if this
> fact is widely known among evangelicals who are supporting Brownback.
>
> The one criticism of Huckabee is that he raised taxes in Arkansas.
> First of all, is that he had to raise money to meet some Federally
> imposed funding initiatives. When he took office, Arkansas was
> 47th ranked state in education. When he left office, they were
> 23rd rank. The roads were in horrible shape in the aftermath of
> the Clintons. He raised money for them. This is a
> constitutionally sanctioned responsibility of government. He cut
> taxes 86 times in Arkansas. He left with a budget surplus that was
> significant. He also left office with an 86% approval rating. He
> can build consensus even in a primarily Democratic state.
>
> Michael Ferris of the Home School Legal Defense Association
> enthusiastically endorses him as does the former Promise Keeper
> magazine New Man.
>
> There is much more to say. Like you, we are trying to make a 1st
> or 2nd place showing in the Iowa Straw Poll to give our candidates
> a boost and viability. Money and media attention would be gained to
> the winners. All Huckabee needs is exposure in my opinion. The
> money will come and will the volunteers. I would ask you to
> reconsider your support of Senator Brownback; and lead your people
> in not splitting the Christian vote among the two candidates. I
> have been impressed with the pastors across the Greater Des Moines
> area switching their support or giving their support for the
> Governor. We are in Iowa for 'such a time as this'.
>
> XXX church is trying to gain 1000 votes of people who were not
> planning on going to the Iowa Straw Poll from our efforts alone.
> Would you join us in accomplishing this goal?
>
> Brownback is a good man but there is a better candidate in my
> opinion. One that will gain momentum as he is heard. The Gov. is
> of true presidential character.
>
> Well, I thought I would give this a shot. I know it is hard to
> change horses in the middle of the stream but I know you will
> prayerfully consider what I have to say.
>
> Your brother and friend,

Update: Pastor Rude has apologized.

And has he offered to give back his tax exemption?

The reactionary Catholic/Protestant coalition is one of convenience that may not last forever. After all, Old School Catholics believe theirs is the one true church and the only pass for admission to Heaven, and many evangelicals believe the Roman Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon and the Pope is the Anti-Christ. The aptly named Rev. Rude can apologize all he wants, but the original letter doubtlessly reflects his true sentiments.

Nice to see the religious whackos turning on each other.

My thought as well. This PAC (Political Action Church) gets a tax exemption?

Brownback really has a nerve passing around a private email that was only meant for those it was addressed to. I in no way see how Pastor Rude said anything bad about Catholics. Sam Brownback is losing in the polls and I guess this is is last ditch attempt to gain a little press by claiming he was persecuted against because of his religion.Very ridiculous. Before Sam Brownback makes comments about the supporters of other candidates he had better deal with own:
Check out Baptists For Brownback
http://baptistsforbrown2008.wordpress.com/2007/07/19/the-curse-of-ham-why-barack-hussein-oboma-will-never-
be-president/
If candidates need to apologize for what their supporters say then Sam Brownback needs to apologize to every African American in this country for the racist remarks made by Baptists for Brownback. Oh how hypocrites bug me..

Excuse me, but you don't see how it is offensive that he refers to himself as a "recovering Catholic", as if it were some sort of disease???

Well this certainly helps me in my vote casting... two candidates with similar principles and qualifications... one has a volunteer who openly compares my faith and my Church to an illness.... hmm.... who should I vote for?!

Well, I always said they would eat their own....

Christians-

Let's not be foolish. Articles such as this are planted to sow division among us. When we take the bait, as some writers have above, we play into the hands of those who wish to weaken us through division. Let us follow Christ's example and forgive our brother for any lapses, while we soldier on together to achieve our common goals.

Although the government is not supposed to establish a state religion it seems logical and right that voters would use the professed religious beliefs of a candidate to help them decide how to cast their votes.
An evangelical protestant who wants to recommend to fellow voters that they not vote for someone who is Catholic is on solid legal ground.

The Catholic candidate should not ask for an apology when he is attacked because of his Catholicism. He should explain instead why his religion will make him a President who will vigorously pursue his oath of office.

If you actually take the time to read Rev. Rude's e-mail you will see that there is nothing wrong with it. Read it! Rev. Rude in fact says "Brownback is a good man." It sounds like that means if Huckabee were not in the race he would support Brownback. He just found someone with views more Biblically based. We should take this for what it is; the media twisted every possible thing they might be able to find wrong with it. Lets not let the media divde us, it is already getting out of hand.
And I would also like to point out that when a Pastor (as a PERSON!) supports someone it doesn't mean that their church is not allowed for tax exemption. As a person he is supporting Huckabee, not as a church! Please actually take the time to read and UNDERSTAND the text before you make off hand comments.

So I find the whole thing very disheartening after looking at all sides and all voices.

I was a Brownback supporter but now don't know what to do.

I really find no fault with Huckabee. He can't control what others say and was not involved at all.

I find fault with the Brownback campaign. He knew who wrote it and through the proliferation of this e-mail has run a reverse smear campaign. As a Christian he has an obligation to make peace and be a peacemaker. Instead of 'turning the other cheek' he has choosen to hurt and cause pain. So, to quote Rev. Rude, "that is all I need to know about his discernment when compared to the Governor’s".

I find fault with the Rev. Rude. His appology is accepted and as a Christian I am obligated to forgive. Though there's hurt involved sin't that why we need to forgive? If something doesn't hurt us then there's no need for forgiveness.

I find fault with all the gosips as well. This appears to be a pastor who may or may not have a grudge and has not choosen to make peace with the person who offended him (Rev. Rude) and instead became a gosip.

So who do I vote for? Well Huckabee seems to be the only one who's character has shown to be true. He'll be my vote at the straw pole.

Recovering Catholic--Try former catholic that leans on his own understanding and believes in private interpretation of scriptures. Both condemned in the bible. Uneducated former catholics are generally the loudest against the church. I guess trying to justify their position of self-appointed pope.

Huckabee and Brownback are both great candidates for president and we are blessed to have them in the running.

As a pastor, I would like to add the following comments. It is apparent that Rev. Rude was trying to share his private opinion. As such it was wrong for anyone to make it public in the first place. The tone of the letter is not Catholic bashing, its a political appeal to persuade two other gentlemen to support Rude's preferred candidate. Rude wants one of his own "evangelical" in the "protestant/free church" tradition in the number one office in America. I don't believe Rude said anything malicious or wrong, he states that Brownback is a good man yet believes his discernment is off because he choose to be a Catholic. Yes, this is a religiously motivated reason not to back Brownback but as Americans that is our right to hold private convictions that effect public policy.

Many Catholics should remember that their church teaches and recently affirmed their conviction that non-Catholics are not discerning when they do not join the Catholic church and join "erring brethren" and "schismatics". Rude holds that the Catholic church and its followers are erring and he expressed this belief in that he wanted someone he considered more inline with what he believes is a man with good discernment. Let God be the judge and let us not judge this man's actions. Perhaps we should worry about the logs in our eyes before bothering with the speck in our brothers. Yet as a fallible sinner perhaps I am missing something. Suppose Rude did indeed sin in some way offending Brownback. We who are professing Christians of any denomination/affiliation need to learn "to turn the other cheek" more often and to let "love cover a multitude of sins." If Brownback was truly offended he should have done as our Lord taught us to go to the other person in private, then before the church, and if reconciliation is not possible then the wronged Christian should treat the person as one who needs to experience God's grace anew to win the erring brother back. Instead of following Christ teaching too many believers are to quick to fill the blogsphere with another partisan attack that is splitting the body of Christ. How does this honor our Lord?

As an Catholaholic, I am having trouble discerning the meaning of his email. Perhaps I should send it to the Vatican so they can tell me what it means and what to think about it. Then again, they're all afflicted Catholaholics (probably the most afflicted of them all)so they might not be able to discern either. Maybe I should take this email to my uncle. He's a recovering Protestant, so he can probably still think a little bit (we're working on him, but it's slow going. He still insists on trying to discern on his own the nutrition facts of his cereal).

As an Catholaholic, I am having trouble discerning the meaning of his email. Perhaps I should send it to the Vatican so they can tell me what it means and what to think about it. I can put it in right with my question about whether or not it would be wise to breathe today.

Catholics may be a bit oversensitive because society allows anti Catholicism to be the last socially acceptable bigotry.

Who does Rev. Rude think discerned for years over which books to include in the Bible and which ones to reject? He has the Catholic Church to thank ! It was Priests Bishops and theologians who were practicing Catholics whom over several years decided which books to include in the New Testament. God didn't come down from the sky and hand us this Book. How can one be so against the very Church that had the authority to bring them the Bible?

Evangelicals have a debt to the Catholic Church for using their God given authority to canonize the New Testament. Instead they show nothing but disdain.

This makes me so glad I am an atheist! Let all the believers in mythology fight it out amongst themselves.

>And has he offered to give back his tax exemption?

Know Pastor Rude myself, I know him to be a honorable and sincere man.

In regards to the call of asking for Walnut Creek’s tax-exempt status to be revoked because of this alleged churchwide support, can we ask for the same thing for all of those churches that have thrown their support behind candidates such as Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and other Democratic candidates? Just curious and wanting to be fair, since the question has come up...

My thoughts and concern are for Tim Rude. Not for pastor Rude or for Republican Rude, but for Tim. My concern is for him. He was Catholic. What happened? He must be a spiritual person. He feels chosen to lead others to God. My prayers are for Tim and his soul. God is sad over this and the devil is not. Dear Heavenly Father, please strengthen Tim as he goes through these trials. Protect him from all evil. Guide him home to the Catholic Church. I ask this through Christ, our Lord and through the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Honestly?

As a Catholic who has lived a significant period of time in evangelical Protestant strongholds, (i.e. the Bible Belt, among other places) this is nothing new. It's not suprising. It IS disheartening, and yet another reminder of how some Christians profess to love thy neighbor as themselves - so long as their neighbor is in lockstep with them. And yes, there are plenty of Catholics included in the term "Christians".

Just do me a favor, Reverend Rude - don't bother to call yourself a Christian if you can't accept that God loves everybody, not just you and yours.

From "Pastor" Rude's website:

http://www.walnutcreekcc.org/wccc/aboutus/whoweare/statementoffaith.php

"Baptism and the Lord’s Supper:

Jesus Christ has instructed those who believe in Him to be baptized in water as a symbol of their new birth in Christ. Baptism is only for those who have personally believed in Christ. Our practice is to baptize by immersion. The Lord also instituted the Lord’s Supper as a remembrance of His suffering, death and resurrection. Neither baptism nor the Lord’s Supper have any merit in helping a person obtain eternal life."

Mr. Rude is not a 'recovering' Catholic, he is an apostate Catholic and the statement above is pure heresy. And he will answer to Our Lord for his apostasy and his heresy and for the souls that he is leading to perdition.

All Mike Huckabee needs to do to put this issue at rest is to show a positive, public sign of respect towards Catholics.
