It's Official: McCain's Press Staff Resigns

16 Jul 2007 09:33 am

Sen. John McCain's top three press aides resigned this morning, Republicans close to the campaign said and one of those aides confirmed.

The campaign's research director and two other press staffers also stepped down.

The departure of Brian Jones, the communications director, Danny Diaz, his deputy, and Matt David, another deputy, had been widely anticipated since last week's resignation of campaign manager Terry Nelson. All three were Nelson's proteges and worked closely with departed strategist John Weaver.

But all three showed up in New Hampshire last Friday to staff McCain's two-day trip through the state. Jones carefully attended to McCain at a press conference and Diaz staffed him on a blogger conference call. The Wall Street Journal reported that day that the three would resign Saturday. They did not. They did, in fact, share a farewell drink with the Senator.

"This is not an acrimonious departure. We're doing everything we can to keep the transition smooth," Jones said. He said he and the others informed campaign manager Rick Davis before a senior staff meeting this morning.

Last Tuesday, as word of the Nelson and Weaver resignations was sent out to the press, Jones essentially ordered his staff to stay put. "No one is leaving this week," Jones said. And no one did. The goal was to get through the week and through McCain's trip to New Hampshire.

Jill Hazelbaker, currently McCain's New Hampshire communications director, is likely to take over as national communications director, a Republican briefed on the changes said. She's worked closely with McCain's new team, worked well with his old team, and has no dog in the fight but McCain.

"If he's going to turn this campaign around, it's probably going to have to start in New Hampshire," the Republican said.

Davis said in an interview that he expects a downsized press operation: with spokespeople in the early states included, before today's resignations, there were 12 McCain staffers dedicated to media and research.

"Frankly, the priority was to try and sustain as much as we could in communications but they were one of the best shops that we had," Davis said.

Jones was the RNC's communications director during the 2006 cycle, and was a senior adviser to the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2004. Diaz was Jones's RNC deputy and supervised regional communications. And David worked with Steve Schmidt, another former McCain adviser, on the 2006 Schwarzenneger re-election campaign.

McCain staffers Amanda Hennenberg and Adam Temple also resigned, sources said, as did the campaign's research director, Brian Rogers.

Davis said that Susan Nelson, a principle at a firm owned by Tom Loeffler, another McCain adviser, will serve as finance director. Davis said that a new Iowa state director would be appointed soon and that more staff would be added to the pared down campaign operations in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.

"The states are going to be the beneficiary of the budget crisis," Davis said.

McCain, Obama, Clinton, Rudy, it does not matter. Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, opening mail, banning books like "America Deceived' from Amazon America Deceived (book), stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and end this madness.

Ron Paul, the Democrat's new favorite Republican.

McCain was never a frontrunner, except in the mind of the establishment which has been pushing him down our throats for 8 years now. (Many at National Review endorsed McCain in 2000, which shows you how conservative they are!)

Hank, you are half-correct: the Democrats are treasonous and insane.

John McCain is a true war hero who failed to recognize the real war. He is guilty of NOT backing the one with Mexico. Noone who backed the "amnesty" bill can claim to be a defender of our county or its laws, borders or culture. I still respect his integrity, which separates him from most of the other candidates in both parties, but not his judgment. Finis, ad infinitum.. (Press 1 for English.)

While I agree on "not a dime's worth of difference" between MOST Dems and Reps, I'd check with UNITY08.org long before I'd vote for a nut case for President. Reality: whoever is elected in 08 will face MUCH increased violence in the middle east, leading both bleeding-heart liberals AND flag-waving "US First" radicals to demand something be done!

And no "redeployment" will stop this evolution until we discover an effective strategy against terrorism. It is not an anti-Islamic, or anti-Christian or anti-Zionist or anti-Communist war... it IS a war against a TACTIC that ALL radicalized factions can use, apparently effectively. Until the non-radical majority can come up with a strategy that nullifies the value of terror, terrorism will grow.

What we're doing in Iraq is experimenting with the technologies, tactics and political methods by which terror, an illegal and immoral tactic, may eventually be rendered useless. Political discourse, without violence, MUST ultimately replace terrorism.

So far I have heard NO politician admit this reality and come forward with a proposal for how to defang this tiger short of MASSIVELY turning our world into a police state. Certainly we don't want this, but unless we start seeing progress in Iraq, you can be assured that this will be the next thing tried, REGARDLESS of who is elected. Even the LIBERTARIANS will demand it when we start seeing hundreds blown up daily in American streets.

Demand honesty from our politicians. None have a good idea of how to solve this, so they tell lies about their opponents out of blind hope they can do a better job "if only they get elected". This is NOT a respectable position for ANY of them.

The problem with McCain is that he simply doesn't get the concerns of the American Middle Class. He acts like an independent but thinks like and effete intellecutal Eastern Sea Board snob.

It's time for him to wake up and understand that the middle class does not like to be sold out to the intelligentsia that support open borders.

President Ahab will continue to pursue the great white whale ("victory" in Iraq) regardless of what it does to the Republican ship. "Dead Man Walking" McCain is not about to jump ship. However, you can show some sanity -- support Ron Paul.

Say what you want, and hope for what you want to believe, but McCains demise is due in No Small part to his position on the illegal immigration problem.

All the other second guessing and analyzing the elite do, is just that, secondary.

I agree that there is hardly a dimes worth of differance between the two so called established parties. I also agree with one statement above: Dr.Ron Paul does not drift with the wind; he would straighten this country out. He has my vote.

McCain never a front-runner?? Are you nuts, Key? He was one of the top front-runners until Terry Nelson quit and handed the job over to Rick Davis, someone who can't tell the difference between $2 million and $24 million. I think McCain will soon realize that letting Nelson submit his resignation go was his biggest mistake yet.

Davis will be the demise of McCain's campaign...

Investigate 9/11 properly??? That is code for "I am a kook" !! Let me guess Bush was behind it for an excuse to invade. McCain is going down because of his steadfast support for the open border initiative.

Anybody that votes Democrat or Republican? Well all i can say is, we need to clean that cesspool out, because it is running over, and i can't stand the smell. My lord, how long is the American people going to put up with a government that cares nothing about the people ? Please people lets clean house it's our only hope.

Since McCain is out, I've been looking into Ron Paul. He is the only one that wants to lock down the boarders and reduce taxes.

Hank, Wahabis Muslims would torture Ron Paul and have him begging for mercy. As this war ramps up, it is going to be funny when you get scared. Guys like you are fine as long as other people are doing the fighting. McCain and I parted ways when he said we had to treat captured terrorists with kid gloves. J.

While I respect McCain's service to the country, he is just not in touch with what America wants. You may hear candidates say polls are fickle and not relevant to being a leader. However, when you are trying to get elected, you better snap to and listen to polls. Immigration sunk McCain's ship. Bottom line. There has been such an unraveling of the Constitution in the past dozen years that it is shocking. From the insane eminent domain decision to warrentless wiretapping to Katrina to Iraq to Habeas Corpus to pardoning criminals(Marc Rich and Lewis Libby) to Lobbyist leeches. Its all corporations funding either a democrat or republican. It has become the needed time for RON PAUL!!!!! He is the green eggs and ham that we must convince people to try!

"Ron Paul, the Democrat's new favorite Republican."

Well maybe having something that appeals to both sides isn't so bad?

At the current rate, with 70% of the country against the iraq war, 8 out of 9 republican candiates would be thrown under a bus during the general election.

Even with hillarys awful "i voted for it but i'm slowly backing away" position, as far as the voting public is concerned that kind of talk puts her ahead of every running republican except paul on the issue.

For any person that genuinely believes in reagan's small government, there is only one choice.

Look, McCain was never as popular as the media would have had you believe. They liked McCain because Here was a republican breaking with the Party, and if he hurt Bush enough Gore may have been able to win. Additionally McCain courted the press like nobody's business. But remember, McCain to the best of my recollection ONLY won in New Hampshire, Michigan and his home state of Arizona. He was isolated by Paranoid staffers John Weaver and Mark Salter at the higher levels. They should have warned him about the countries mood on Immigration and NEVER let him co-sponsor the bill with Kennedy. If you hear him now, you can tell the NEW Campaign head Rick Davis has already got McCain saying reconcilliatory phrases like "Boarder security first" etc... trying to correct his mistakes with the party base. He should have been there from the beginning. Those other two had no idea how to run a Campaign, McCain needed a master Puppeteer pulling his strings.

D and R are agents of the neonazizioinsm. They seek the top position to serve the agenda of zionism. Before any one run for the office he or shee seeks the blessing of the neonazizioinsts in Israel. Unless the Americans wake up to this fact, say good by to the constitution.

I love watching McKennedy implode. Ever since the immigration bill I knew this guy was no good. I am looking forward to voting against him in the NH primary, I am a republican and if the race comes down to Clinton and McKennedy I will vote for Clinton. Yes, I will cut off my nose to spite my face!

Ron Paul 2008! Give Freedom a CHance!

Admire John McCain, he's a real hero BUT working with Teddy Kennedy to help illegal aliens turned us against him. We want the fence built on the border and will vote for whoever has the guts to do it.

McCain long ago abandoned the republican base. Now they've abandoned him. Should he be surprised?

I guess John will be driving the bus and making sandwiches soon too.

I think its almost criminal for presidential candidates to have to require many millions of dollars (and have to be beholden to conributors whether they say so or not) to have to run for office. Why can't we just have a system that lets candidates present their opinions and programs one time to all the newspapers in the country and sit back and wait for the election?

Hey, stick a fork in him - - he's done!

Heroic prisoner of war is true of John McCain but most of us conservatives view him as a democrat and unfit to lead the nation. We owe him a debt of thanks for service but not our votes for office.

I fail to see how he can survive much longer this purge...

What is going to jump start campaign? Unless he has a rabbit we don't know about in a top hat somewhere, its over for Senator McCain.

http://www.americanlegends.blogspot.com

McCain revealed himself as a sell-out by trying to ram his Amnesty Scam down the American peoples throats. We warned him (like Bush) that he would lose all support and now he's finished. He's still a "heroe" but only to the illegal alien invaders and the 650,000 illegal criminals roaming around the country murdering, stealing and raping. If the Gov. keeps risking our security it will have another problem to deal with-a revolution. We want our country back now.

Cambel, you honestly think that his staff didn't "warn him" that his position on immigration would be unpopular? Even if you're correct, do you really believe it would have stopped him from doing exactly what he did in the first place?

John McCain is a man of principle. Even when you disagree with what he thinks is best for the country, you have to admire the way he sticks to his guns and tries to do the best he can, no matter how politically unpopular it might be. He truly believed the bill with Kennedy was the best thing that could be done for the immigration problem at the time, and he stuck with it despite the damage it caused to his campaign. That's the kind of leader we should want, not someone who goes wherever the wind blows.

And as for "conciliatory" phrases like "border security first", he's been saying that ALL ALONG. In fact, THAT IS WHAT THE BILL DID. It provided 4 BILLION dollars for border security, and included security triggers that were REQUIRED to be met before any of the other provisions could go into effect. It was certainly not amnesty and it most definitely would've helped our security. It was defeated by right-wing extremists who hate immigrants and who scared people into opposing the bill by labeling it as amnesty (and I say that as a conservative myself).

The only problem Senator McCain has when dealing with the media and the American people is that he is too honest, and too forthright. He tells you what he believs and where he stands, and that's that. He sticks with it and does what he thinks is best for America, even if people don't like it. It's a problem I wish more politicians had.

"They should have warned him about the countries mood on Immigration and NEVER let him co-sponsor the bill with Kennedy. "

I disagree. An astute senator would know even his home state's constituent's feelings about the immigration issue and wouldn't need a "warning". This jackass as tied his own noose and is getting ready to hang himself by it.

I say good riddance to bad rubbish. I was in disbelief that he was even a viable candidate in the first place considering his voting history.

Never heard of Ron Paul before now, I may just check him out and see what he stands for...if anything.

He is petulant and never has been strong presidential material. I'm an Arizona conservative who could accept some of that, but when he came out for amnesty for illegal aliens, he blew himself up.

It's a shame. McCain probably is the most qualified of either the Dems or the Repubs. I think his stand on immigration doomed him and it may even doom him in the next election in Arizona. I'm glad he stuck to his principles on Iraq though, unlike Hillary who is a hawk right up until the point public opinion changes.

Who would want a clueless person like McCain to run the country? Perhaps McCain should ask illegal immigrants to donate money and provide marches to support him.

It is absolutely ironic that in 2004, McCain was identified as the middle-of-the-road, "thinking man's" Republican. Even more so, he was the iconic war hero and the anti-Bush. Four years later he's so closely identified with Bush, he seems like a fawning protege, and he's sinking in his mentor's leaky and rudderless boat. What a political moron he is. Thank god he has no chance of being President, and that both of these incompetent men will be gone from public service in 18 months.

Well, you know the old adage about lipstick and pigs. Truth is that it doesn't matter who puts the lipstick on the pig, or who tells the media about the pig wearing the lipstick, in the end all you have is a pig.

The problem is the candidate, his lack of appeal to the republican party, and a media that has stopped covering him as he "tries" to discover his republican soul.

The formal announcement will come before Xmas that the pig is out.

Poor McCain, He's very wrong on both issues. The war in Iraq and the illegal alien invasion. How can he be so wrong? He's certainly way out of touch with Americans. It's a funeral for his ambitions.

C'mon Mc Cain, drink the kool-aid and give your campaign cash to Fred T. Sooner the better!!

The Immigration debate only goes to show that McCain is a fighter- and he'll fight for whatever he deems right, regardless of the opposition. On campaign-finance reform in 2000 he fought his party leadership; on earmarks and wasteful spending he fought his fellow legislators; on Immigration he fought his party's base; and on the War in Iraq he's fighting the media and public opinion. I'd note that I'm only behind him on about 50% of that.

Say what you will about the man, he's unwilling to compromise his principles no matter what the cost. Now, perhaps that's not what you want in a President, but its surely enormously different from what else is on offer among the front-runners.

"McCain is a fighter- and he'll fight for whatever he deems right, regardless of the opposition. . ."

Fine, only if he's going to fight against his own party's base, he shouldn't expect to win his party's nomination. As a conservative, I consider McCain dead wrong on several key issues. Am I supposed to respect the fact that he sincerely advocates policies that I consider harmful to America? I've had enough of that with Bush.

If Democrats are in favor of Ron Paul then they are not reading about his stances. Non-interventionism used to be a trait of conservatives, but they think since he is against the Iraq War that he is somehow a liberal in Republican clothing. Wrong again. He's the most conservative one of the bunch. Strong borders, pro-life, defeat teachers' unions, privatize health care, never voted for a tax...The list goes on and on. It would be the greatest thing to see Ron Paul win, but he won't because everyone wants to vote for the "perceived" winner. Instead we will get another "giant douche or turd sandwich" as South Park so aptly put it. Worse case scenario would be McCain vs. Edwards or McCain vs. Clinton. In any of those events America would surely lose.

I'm not sure McCain has any principles other than doing whatever he thinks is his own personal political interest. Unfortunately for him, he's a lousy judge of which way things are going to break. Too much time sucking up to the liberal press, too much time & too many martinis with Uncle Teddy I suppose. None of the meretricious positions McCain took are any evidence to me of standing on principle - quite the opposite. Campaign finance reform was a cynical incumbent protection scheme. The Gang of 14 was a nakedly ambitious spotlight grab. The Amnesty bill was a sop to corporate campaign contributors - cheap slave labor in exchange for campaign cash. How much courage does it take for a Senator from Goldwater country to grandstand, fecklessly I might add, on earmarks & porkbarrel, all the while winking over at Teddy, who knows his pal really doesn't mean a word of it? The man is an absolute fraud, with a mean streak to boot. The mainstream press always seems to lionize the McCains: the most banal, cynical frauds available, because real integrity is anathema.

Ron Paul is a treasonous nut job.

Whoever R LaBonte is - he or she summed up the McClain Legacy brillantly.

Good bye, John.

It is principal, not principle.

Hank, In case you hadn't noticed, Ron Paul is a Republican, too. So if there's not a dimes worth of difference....

Key, You got the wrong half (as usual, I suspect) The treasonous types are in the White House, as anyone can see....Oh, except for the fools who stilll retain their sycophantic snivelling Chit attitutde toward the Bushites (Bush, the name says it all).

Cheers

Goodbye McCain, don't let the door hit you on the butt on your way out.

McCain is not principled, he just has too many brain cells backfiring and short circuiting. He needs the straight jacket.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Next.

how the mighty have fallen.
I spent hours getting sigs to recall this jackass before 9/11 which stopped after that fact.
ask any true conservative in AZ for the facts of this opportunist.
opinionated 82 yr old broad,rj

McCain, and everybody else, misunderstood the '00 campaign. Then people were running from Dubya, rather to McCain. ANd they were right, except in Florida. Now the moment of truth's come and it could be fortunate for the country if the man won't spoil '08 election.

No me gusta McCain......
I like Ron Paul, America needs Dr. No.
He has not been bought and paid for.

We're seeing a lot of little people trying to get the nod for filling a big, big job. We certainly haven't done very well in the past and things are looking even bleaker this time around.

LaBonte said it all.

How tough is it for a former POW to be elected in Arizona?

In fact, there isn't one single thing about McCain that is "tough." Remember, he "cheated" to fly, so he set himself up for the POW stint, and his character hasn't improved one iota in the past 30 years.

He is a fraud. The party regulars didn't want him in 2000 and they don't want him now. Why he can't realize that is beyond me. He must be obtuse.

He is an attention "ho" and he can afford to "run off at the mouth" or "grand-stand" or "show-boat" because he has a guaranteed government pension and his wife is rich.

He is old and out of touch and needs to give a younger man a chance to represent Arizona in the Senate. He simply is out of steam. He has zero more to give. He needs to hang it up and GO HOME.

However, his position on immigration, terrorism, and illegals coming into this country is completely separate from "hating Mexicans" and the "Maginot" fence (which is being promoted by a greedy concrete manufacturer) [plus, have you heard that they are hiring "illegals" to build it 'cause Americans won't work in the heat? LOL]

[I have studied immigration history, and Mexico specifically, as part of my Criminal Justice requirements, and I have examined hundreds of source documents regarding the economics of Mexican labor in this country. Anyone who thinks that Mexicans are promoting cheap labor needs to read something other than the garbage coming from "Patriots R US." In fact, our elected representatives are voting against the populist positions for darn good reasons. They know the truth and they know that the populists are repeating absolute nonsense from those who are trying to split the Republican Party. In fact, the populist positions are based on nothing but rumor, innuendo, and false logic. We have crops rotting in the field because the "illegals" are being kept out of this country. In fact, our berry farmers pay $100/ day and Americans won't pick berries for $100 a day. That means that America has less food this year, for ourselves and to sell to others. That means that Americans (including seniors and the poor) will have to pay more for their food next year. That means a worsening economy in a country that already has a weakening dollar. That means that more farmers will go out of business, and we will have to import more POISON food from China. Way to go you "patriot genius" boobs (who believe every single hysterical claim you hear, without ever demanding PROOF, or figuring out which claims make NO SENSE, or wondering who is trying to manipulate YOU, and promoting the Democrats, and harming America). You never bother to learn what is truth and what are lies. You repeat your hysterical rants without considering the harm you are doing. And, the problem is, by the time you wake up (if you ever do) it will be too late! The damage will already be done, and you will look around for someone to blame. Try the mirror, sheeple!!!!!]

That was a world class post. I agree with LaBonte.

The idea that McCain's collapse is because of his stance on the war is absurd. Support of the war effort does not seem to have caused the collapse of Rudy's, Romney or Thompson's campaign. The truth, that you will never hear from the mainstream media, is that McCain never had a chance. You can't sleep with the political enemey and cosey up to the media for 8 years and then claim to be a conservative on election day. McCain opposed conservatives on the political battles over: Tax Cuts, Amnesty for Illegals, and Campaign Finance Reform, aka, suppression of political speach for the benefit of incumbents. and sided with the dems in blocking the nomination of originalist judges. There is a reason that John Kerry wanted McCain to be his VP, and it ain't because McCain was a conservative.

McCain's support for the war on terror is the only thing that keeps his poll numbers from falling off the chart.

John McCain is IMHO an egomaniac who is utterly out of touch with mainstream America. Johnny is consumed with his own tidy vision of the future wherein he is the leader and all us dummies meekly follow his lead.WRONGO BUCKO! Myself and countless other people spent days on the phones and emailing to defeat the corporate shamnesty bill that McCain and his big corporate sponsors tried to slip by us all.Can you imagine-giving 10 million criminal aliens the right to become citizens after they broke our laws by coming here and cost the taxpayers of this nation an average of $19,000@year per illegal!!! John cooked this up in secret with Uncle Teddy and a few others and they tried to force it down our throats with the help of that dimwit in the White house-whats his name.
Anyway, too bad John.Go home,do not pass Go,do not become President.

...McCain would have sided with the British during the Revolutionary War. I can't imagine him signing the Decloration. After the war, he would have opposed the Bill of Rights.

Ask Rick Davis if he remembers Gaylyn Goble from Reagan/Bush '84.

The buzz is he is going to drop out and support Rudy. He was Defense Sec job under President Rudy.

Say what you want but if MCCAIN gets the GOP Nomination I will vote for, Campaign for and support Hillary Clinton!
