The McCain Decimation: The Inside Story: UPDATED

10 Jul 2007 12:29 pm

From a half dozen Republicans close to the campaign here is, best I can tell, what happened:

Republicans close to Sen. John McCain said today that McCain was under "enormous pressure" by friends and advisers outside the campaign to fire campaign manager Terry Nelson because these advisers felt that Nelson was incapable of containing campaign spending and refused to run a more efficient campaign.

These Republicans also said that Nelson first considered resigning ten days ago when the campaign reported a disappointing second quarter campaign tally and was left with only $2M on hand. At the time, McCain told an intermediary that he would not accept Nelson's resignation and wanted him to stay. Other Republicans advised Nelson to tough it out. Nelson spent the next few days cutting the campaign payroll, laying off many hands that he had hired.

In the intervening period, McCain suggested that Rick Davis, who was McCain's manager in 2000, officially move to a position of co-equal power with Nelson. That crossed a "line in the sand" for chief strategist John Weaver, who has sparred with Davis over campaign strategy and tactics.

Some Republicans close to the campaign say that Davis pushed McCain to fire Nelson.
McCain's refusal to give Nelson absolute authority over the campaign "cost McCain both Weaver and Salter," one source close to the campaign said.

Salter will remain an adviser and help with speechwriting, but he is no longer part of the campaign and won't be paid for his work. At present, he will not return to McCain's Senate office, where he served as chief of staff. In a brief interview, Salter declined to comment on Nelson except to say that "he was not fired." He also said that a new strategist would be hired shortly. Another campaign aide said that Salter remains in McCain's good graces and will occasionally join the candidate on the road.

Sources said that Nelson's position as campaign manager was precariously positioned from the start because McCain did not envision or endorse a campaign structure that would have given Nelson absolute authority over messaging, finance and strategy.

Republicans directly familiar with the negotiations to bring Nelson aboard said that McCain promised Nelson that no one but him would have the ultimate say in making and executing campaign decisions. But McCain did not follow through on those promises, these Republicans said. That McCain had collected too many cooks for the kitchen long worried McCain's allies. Nelson, Weaver, counselor Salter and former manager Davis are all forceful personalities.

Long-time advisers to McCain were free to counsel the candidate and frequently told the press about strategy disagreements. In the first quarter, the campaign spent money, at times, with McCain's approval and not Nelson's.

After the end of the first quarter, Nelson wrestled responsibility for fundraising away from long-time McCain aide Carla Eudy, but he was unable to contain spending. And Nelson was furious, campaign sources said, when several McCain advisers were quoted as saying that McCain would need to raise $20M in the second quarter in order to stay viable.

Republicans outside the campaign said that Nelson's campaign strategy was based on an assumption that the campaign would raise $100M and would dominate the Republican field. He began to build field organizations in early states that matched the expensive operations opened by candidates with more money, like ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney. McCain has raised a fourth of that tally so far and has spent more than $23M.

Nelson decided last night to resign, a campaign official said.

"Terry and John are smart, effective, loyal and hard-working. Obviously, everyone is disappointed with the situation," said Ken Mehlman, the former party chairman. "But at the same time, anyone who worked with those guys understands how effective and hard-working they are."

Davis, who had been serving as the campaign's chief executive officer, will become the interim campaign manager.

Weaver was responsible for guiding McCain through the perilous precincts of Republican party politics. He grew personally close to McCain through the 2000 presidential campaign and in the wilderness years of the early Bush presidency, advised McCain to ask Nelson to be the manager on his 2008 race.

Nelson has served as political director for the Bush-Cheney re-election and nurtured a generation of Republican talent. Many remain on the campaign, including communications director Brian Jones and his deputy, Danny Diaz.

Couldn't happen to better guy........steve

The real key here is Salter. Insiders will tell you that he and McCain were literally in lockstep from sunrise to sunset. The loss of Salter affects McCain's ability as a legislator, public figure, and candidate more than anyone else's.

Assuming McCain loses the race and returns to the Senate, his office will be without its rudder.

McCain sounds like his own worst enemy. How can he run the country if he can't structure his own campaign? Romney must be laughing tonight.

has anyone seen a pic of McCain lately? The guy looks old enough to where if he shuts his eyes you need to check to see if he's still breathing.

Why will Romney be laughing? McCain's followers won't go to him. McCain and Romney don't like each other. The Giuliani campaign is probably the happiest today.

McCain, just like Bush, can't seem to really grasp what is happening all around him, as he flounders. He, like Bush, is unwilling (and/or UNABLE!) to recognize that change is needed in policy, ideology, and behavior. His mindset (like Bush's) is unbending, unwavering, and set in perpetuity (it would seem). Do we as a country, need another 8 years of authoritarian absolutism?

No one needs to sell John McCain to the voters besides John McCain. He's strong as ever and none of these staff changes are going to matter when he has face-to-face conversations with Iowa voters.

...The good Senator lost the day he decided to embrace all the failed policies of Mr. 28% just to pay homage to "the base".

...He used to stand for the truth (as he saw it). Now he stands for absolutely nothing but pandering to the 28% lunatic fringe that still worships the Idiot King.

Very sad day, I think. When you sacrifice your integrity as blatantly as McCain has, it's hard to hang onto the people who believed in you, and the people you're pandering to won't trust you because the pandering is so obvious.

The inner machinations of McCain's campaign aren't way McCain is floundering. McCain's toast because of his big "fuck you" to the GOP on immigration. Back in '00 he could buck the base and still hope for some fawning MSM coverage, but not now with his position on Iraq. So McCain is done. Anyone outside of the beltway could have told you that a month ago.

BS (aka "Blue Shark")

You read the situation entirely backwards.

The problem with McCain is not that he panders to the base, but that he (and Bush) alienated them with the Shamnesty bill fiasco.

Diehard Republicans won't contribute to McCain, because he has burned us one too many times.

I still support Bush and McCain on the war, but this Shamnesty attempt makes me look other directions for future leadership.

Who would have thought it would end like this...so soon. Poor old McCain just can't seem to catch a break.

He was done in by McCain - Kennedy, I know of no one who will support someone who is pro AMNESY.

So when do we party? Let this be a lesson to all the open borders folks.

Time to start buying McCain/GOP nomination shares on intrade while they're at a low... He'll come back

I believe Sen McCain should quit the Senate and run full time.

How about tomorrow?

"Do we as a country, need another 8 years of authoritarian absolutism?"

I agree, anything to keep Hill-de-beast out of the White House. If McCain wanted to be President, he should have changed parties in '00.
He has always been more Democrat then Republican.
The Media jumped on his bandwagon hard and heavy in '00 and pushed him down the road pretty good. It was part of a plan to keep the White House in Liberal hands by running two Liberals (algore and McCain) for President. The MSM is collectively about as smart as a cinder block, only with more holes. So now they are trying again, only this time they have several RINO's to push down the road, which is why McCain's wagon is in the ditch now. The MSM is losing a lot of their power and they are focusing on the stronger RINO's.
None of the Big 3 RINO's will win the Republican nomination. Conservatives are NOT going to allow the MSM to select their candidates.
Gulli, Rommy amd Mac are Liberals. They might have been conservatives in the 20th century, but not today. Times change.
None of it really matters. Iraq is NOT the War on Terror, it is PART of the war on terror.
To win the WoT will require regime change in about 2 dozen nations. Either that or genocide. I'm not real keen with having my nation associated with killing a few hundred million people. Yet cutting and running from Iraq will lead to either two places, genocide or surrender. Sticking it out will mean staying in Iraq for at least another 20 to 30 years.
The Democrats running for office understand that, at least the ones with any chance of winning do. So they whisper sweet nothings in the ears of the rabid anti-war types, knowing that once elected they can tell the moonbats to bugger off. After all, it's not like they (moonbats) can switch parties, can they? And if the moonbats bail on the Demonrats, then it will put the repugs back in power. So there will be no major changes in Iraq, no matter who gets elected.

The hatred some members of the so-called Republican base have
for McCain is hard for me to fathom. Pandering . . . really? I guess
that move on Immigration reform was pandering to you guys.

Still, I hope you get your wall. Read the Linda Chavez column on
Real Clear last week. You take the 40% of the vote Bush got the
last two times for granted. Wake up, it has already returned to
the Dems and Hillary. They will write the next Immigration Bill
and you can bet they will have Motor Voter for recent Immigrants.

McCain still has the same chance he had in 2000. Most of the early
states allow independents to vote in the GOP primary.

I can't believe it...Fred is inexperienced, Romney is only in it for the sake of the title, Huckabee isn't decisive enough, and McCain supports amnesty....so that leaves Guilliani....who although a great business man, i think leans a little towards liberal in some of his views.....we need Bill O'Reilly to run...ha ha

McCain has two problems he cannot overcome to be the Republican candidate for President:

1. The campaign finance bill he pushed through congress that attempted to control free speech.

2. The amnesty bill he attempted to push through the senate with the help of Ted Kennedy.

McCain is no Republican

Sen. McCain lost me when attempted to broker his pro-amnesty/open borders bill. And no, I am not a racist nor am I a bigot. I may be looking at Fred Thompson now.

Campaign structure? Nonsense! McCain lost touch with the base...remember boarder security.

McCain? the McCain of McCain-Feingold, The Gang of 14, the Amnesty Bill!

And pundits are wondering why McCain is not getting through to the base?

This was bound to happen: McCain is too old, too tired, too confused on what his positions are/were, and has lost his soul. He should be given a medal for his commendable Viet Nam service and retire to the pastures of Arizona.

McCain is an honorable man. As a Democrat, I'd be proud to shake his hand. His desire to become the leader of our nation, however, will not come to pass because McCain has not served his state, and his nation, bound by party ideology, but rather by principle. Whether you agree with his positions on Immigration, Iraq, campaign-finance, taxes, abortion, political prisoners, or not, you have to agree that the man is a patriot, loves his country, and believes his positions serve the best interests of our nation.

I will not vote for him, but I damn sure will take my hat off to him!

I have examined the FEC documents, other sources and quite frankly Weaver and Nelson are bums. I have seen their tactics up close and they are no Rove, Carville, or Atwaters for sure. And as for their loyal following of drones, I find it funny they follow hacks instead of candidates-political whores.
