Debate Postview: Updated

23 Jul 2007 09:00 pm

The differences between Sen. Hillary Clinton and her chef rivals were drawn out in sharp relief tonight, perhaps more so than in any previous debate.

Clinton acknowledged -- and demanded that her rivals acknowledge -- that withdrawing from Iraq would be a lot harder than the party's soundbites would suggest.

And she refused an invitation to cater to the left wing of her party by saying she'd meet with out-of-step world leaders in the first year of her presidency.

"Well, I will not promise to meet with the leaders of these countries during my first year," she said. "I will promise a very vigorous diplomatic effort because I think it is not that you promise a meeting at that high a level before you know what the intentions are."

Barack Obama answered without hesitation -- he'd meet "without preconditions" with the leaders of Syria, North Korea, Iraq, Cuba and Venezuela.

"And I think that it is a disgrace that we have not spoken to them," he said. "We've been talking about Iraq -- one of the first things that I would do in terms of moving a diplomatic effort in the region forward is to send a signal that we need to talk to Iran and Syria because
they're going to have responsibilities if Iraq collapses."

The debate's setting and staging detracted from the seriousness of those exchanges. There were musical questions, sotto voice questions, skits about Al Gore, kind-of-funny campaign videos, and other visual paraphernalia. Anderson Cooper got to ask some follow ups. Mike Gravel complained about his time.

Tonight's debate was supposed to be different, but many of the questions were a variation on the same theme: how do we, the voters, know that you guys, the candidates, are for real? In that way, the format gave a lift to the change agents.

And there are two of them in the Democatic race: Obama and Clinton. To borrow a Harry Potter analogy, "change agent" is the snitch and Obama and Clinton are competing seekers. (That Hillary Clinton is seen as a change agent is remarkable at this point, attributable to her status as a Democrat, the earliness of the race, or the hard work of her campaign. It raises the question: change from what? The old order? Or just President Bush?)

The third-to-last question, in fact, was just that, from a guy named Cris Nolan. Wouldn't Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton represent continuity, not change? "I think it is a problem that Bush was elected in 2000," Clinton began. She asked to be judged on her own merits. Obama: "I think every question we've heard you see cynicism about the capacity to change this country. The question for the American people is: who has the track record of bringing about change?"

"Big change. Real change. Bold change," says John Edwards, who cast his two opponents as "our insiders" in the sense that the Democrats shouldn't exchange "our insiders for their insiders."

Do voters really want change? Five leading candidates took a private jet to the debate. Richardson wants all residual troops out of Iraq. That's a change. Joe Biden wants to intervene in Darfur. That's a big change. Dennis Kucinich wants a department of piece. There's more change in the lower tiers than in the higher tiers. So maybe it's not about change.

A brief report card in no particular order:

Hillary Clinton -- If you want to know how a Clinton presidency might differ from other Democrats, study this debate carefully.

Joe Biden -- on the ball about Iraq and foreign policy, especialy Darfur. He loves South Carolina and this debate loved him.

John Edwards -- He seemed on his game, although a noisy audience deprived him of the chance to impress a questioner on gay rights. His calling out of audience members didn't seem forced.

Barack Obama -- Debates are not his format, although he threw some good sound bites tonight and generally comported himself well.

Mike Gravel -- he complained about how little time he was getting.... and took up a lot of time in the process.

Dennis Kucinich -- he made little progress tonight. He had few friends in the audience.

Chris Dodd -- his best debate so far.

Bill RIchardson -- he did his best to draw contrasts with the frontrunners on Iraq.

only the msm thinks Hillary was worthwhile and dismisses Obama.
Hillary lacks substance and her spin, triangulating and blaming others was her answers. along with a loud voice to impress the guillible of the msm.
The people have overwhelmingly disagreed and picked Obama.
With Edwards doing very well too.
You guys need to get stars out of your eyes and listen to what is being said, or not said by Hillary.
no substance.

I agree with the first comment. Hillary came off as programmed as usual. Also, she seemed uncomfortable in the setting. Obama won hands down. Hillary is not change - Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton - no thanks.

Agree with the other posters...most claim she needs to fight the Clinton heritage, but in my eyes she represents more of the same old same old of the beltway...

Obama is inexperienced, but so far he's presented himself as a really sharp cookie that would have no trouble gathering the best minds from all venues for the best solutions...he's inspiring and this old lady citizen needs to be inspired about being an American again...

It's a four person race in my opinion...I would prefer Obama, but would be alright with he, Clinton, Biden or Edwards. Biden only gets in because he actually knows of what he speaks re the Middle East.

Open up your commentary to all the candidates, not the MSM chosen ones please.

Maybe I'm strange, I Liked Clinton and Biden the most, I'm willing to give him another harder look after this debate. Edwards is a dissapointment, Obama strikes me as a cult of personality right now. And his positions will be torn apart in a general election.

So I have 4 people I'd support... in alphabetical order, Biden, Clinton, McCain, and Paul. And despite the fact that the entire group of them have as different a set of beliefs and ideas on how to run the country, I don't think any of that group would be bad for the country. The rest of the group scares me a bit too much.

I agree with the first three posts. Hillary was...Hillary. Programmed is a good way to describe her performance tonight. I've seen her campaign here in Iowa and face-to-face she's equally disappointing and her campaign and message lacks any real substance. Obama, by contrast, has clearly thought about the issues and his experience outside of DC is refreshing. Hillary, et al., have taken PAC and lobbyists' money for many years and are therefore influenced by corporate interests. We need someone who can transcend partisan politics; Clinton, Biden, McCain, nor Paul can do that.

If it appears that the debate format is not Obama's forte, it's because he doesn't resort to cheap sound bites nor pander to whomever is in the room at the time. Obama has integrity--something that Hillary (and Bill) do not possess.

Finally, how can Hillary claim to 'be experienced' but then stand behind the mantra of 'Ready for Change'? Doesn't anyone see a conflict here with those two sentiments? As David Brooks of the New York Times has said, Obama is the only candidate who can change politics as we know it in this country. No other candidate can do that.

Obama will have my vote in January and then again in the general election.

JJ

How can the Dems complain about special interests as much as they did, then complain about education as much as they did, and never once mention the NEA? I'm afraid a field of eight democrats beholden to the labor vote does not surprise anyone or change anything.

As usual, Senator Clinton showed her superior knowledge and experience. It is becoming even clearer that she will be our nominee and our next president. Keep hope alive!

I strongly disagree with the posts about Hillary being programmed and lacking substance. Lets be honest people, you may hate Hillary (for whatever irrational reasons that you hold) but she performs brilliantly on debates. She is solid and shows her experience, I ask you all one question, Why do you dislike Hillary Clinton?. Analyze your own answers and you will realize those answers are the ones that lack substance and are weak.

I am going to jump in here in agreement with the general tone of the other commenters. Jeffrey Toobin was the first post-debate analyst to opine that Hillary won the debate hands down. I think that conclusion is far from obvious. Focus groups from around the country did not concur either.

I would have liked to have seen more post-debate reaction from the viewers rather than insider MSM punditry. It would have been more in keeping with the spirit of the YouTube questions, which by the way, I found quite refreshing. I hope they carry this concept through the general election so that it is not the "establishment" that is setting the issues agenda as they have done in the past presidential election cycles.

Brooks said: As usual, Senator Clinton showed her superior knowledge and experience. It is becoming even clearer that she will be our nominee and our next president.

That's gotta be David Brooks trolling...

Those Republicans are so insidious. They will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the Dems put up just about the only candidate who can't win the general.

Wow is this the first time somebody has made comments on an Ambinder blog entry?
Btw your opinion reflects the MSM completely. If I wanted that, I could just turn on Faux News.

Clinton won this debate. She is by far the most presidential of the contenders. Solid performance. I was undecided before, but I am backing Clinton now. Obama uses up a lot of time and has very little substantive to say. Edwards was pretty good, but he got entangled in a few downers that took him off his game. I could not warm up to Biden, he was too hawkish, whereas Richardson was too dovish. Clinton is just right inbetween these two extremes.

Mike Gravel got 2 minutes of talk time Vs. Hillary's 22 minutes, of course he was upset. Notice how the crowd responded in Gravel's favor when he mentioned the preferential treatment given to Clinton, Obama and Edwards.

The truth is, with the exception of Mike Gravel, all of these Democratic candidates are carbon copies! None of them will put forth any real action towards the "big change" they are all promising during these debates. How many Senators were up on that stage? Senators have the power to end this war NOW, IF they wanted to. When Mike Gravel was a Senator, he single handedly ended the U.S. draft during the war in Vietnam. He is the only presidential candidate with the courage to stand up to the Republican spin machine!

Joe Biden is obviously as knowledgeable as any candidate. Hillary Clinton is always prepared and provided the most impactful responses. We want Barack Obama to demonstrate he has the knowledge/understanding to transfer his idealism into executable policy. The exchange about meeting world leaders is a perfect example of why Clinton seems to be more prepared to lead.

Here is my latest Hillary email:
Dear American Friend,

I have attached my “Hillary file” which is culled from the 205+ books and other media that I have on Hillary and Bill. The Clintons are thugs. On the campaign trail in 2007 Hillary and Bill are play acting as the loving, respectful couple – singing each other’s praises on stage and engaging in public affection as they troll for votes.
In order to understand Hillary and Bill, one must first understand the wildly dysfunctional Jerry Springer lifestyle they have lived for 36 years. Hillary has covered for Bill who not only has had HUNDREDS of women, but also perpetrated several rapes and vicious sexual assaults, often involving biting the lips of the women victims. In order to cover up this Jerry Springer chaos, Hillary has often used a secret police and criminal intimidation tactics to harass, intimidate and terrify Bill’s sex victims and girlfriends.

WE’VE HAD ENOUGH “EXPERIENCE” WITH HILLARY

These tactics include the savage beating of Gennifer Flower’s neighbor (Gary Johnson), criminal harassment campaigns on Kathleen Willey (1997-98 car vandalism, stole her cat Bullseye), Liz Ward Gracen (who Bill probably raped while she was Miss America), Gennifer Flowers (break-ins, threats), Sally Perdue (car vandalism, threats), Bobbie Ann Williams (break-in), Christy Zercher (a flight attendant, break-in), Suzi Parker (a journalist harassed off Arkansas tainted prison blood scandal, fearing for her life), Connie Hamzy (lying campaign) and Juanita Broaddrick (raped by Bill, break-in and IRS audit when she went public in 1998). It is not a stretch to say that Hillary, Bill and Buddy Young may have organized the murder of their former employee Jerry Parks on 9/26/93 because he knew too much about the Clintons.
Hillary and Bill were well on the way to crucifying Monica Lewinsky as an unstable stalker, liar and fantasist - – and would have done so if Bill’s semen had not be found on Monica’s blue dress. Hillary’s private eyes were already digging in Monica’s past, when the real story was the Clintons’ criminal track record.
Additionally biographer Roger Morris describes a vicious sexual assault by Bill on a woman (around 1980) on p.238 in his book Parters in Power. Journalist Michael Isikoff details a very crude sexual advance by President Bill in 1996 on a lady married to a Democratic VIP on p.162 of his book Uncovering Clinton. Additionally, pervert Bill exposed himself to Paula Jones in May, 1991 and also to Carolyn Moffet in 1979.
Other Clinton dysfunctions include Bill’s cocaine addiction as governor, Hillary’s lesbianism and the fact that Chelsea is probably the seed of Webb Hubbell, NOT Bill Clinton. Bill’s only offspring is probably Danny Williams, the product of deadbeat dad Bills’ orgies with (no condoms) drug-addicted street hooker Bobbie Ann Williams and her girlfriends back in 1983-84. Bill paid $200 to Gennifer Flowers so she could have an abortion in Jan., 1978, just 3 months before Bill’s rape of Juanita Broaddrick on 4-25-78.
Also, Bill, brother Roger and best friend Dan Lasater were partying with high schools and providing them cocaine when Bill was governor.
And, of course, there is Hillary’s long and intense affair with Vince Foster who was her emotional husband while Bill was screwing everything in sight. Hillary has a long record of fomenting domestic violence with Bill. The Secret Service, fed up with this insanity, leaked to the press Hillary throwing a lamp at President Bill. Hillary has often thrown objects at victim Bill.
Hillary has used criminal tactics such as a secret police and illegal IRS audits to go after both political enemies and Bill’s sex victims and girlfriends. The Clintons put a harassment team on Patrick Knowlton, a witness in the Vince Foster investigation, in late October, 1995. This was a prelude to the intimidation campaign waged on Kathleen Willey in 1997-98 before her deposition in the Paula Jones case. Paula Jones, rape victim Juanita Broaddrick and possible rape victim Liz Ward Gracen all got audited in the late 1990’s by Clinton’s IRS.
Floyd Brown’s offices were burglarized in 1992 and only his Clinton files were stolen. Brown’s private phone conversations were illegally wiretapped. Clinton biographer Emmett Tyrrell also had his offices twice broken into and his NY apartment invaded once. The manuscript of Tyrrell’s book Boy Clinton was stolen when he couriered it to Robert Novak for a blurb. Clintons thugs tried to intimidate 2 of Tyrrell’s researchers in Little Rock.

HILLARY TREATS PEOPLE LIKE DIRT
LIKE THEY ARE “INVISIBLE”

Many people close to the Clintons describe Hillary as rude, vulgar and abusive, not just with staff and co-workers, but especially with Bill who she made a sport of ridiculing, according to L.D. Brown, Bill’s favorite state trooper. Hillary is well known for making mean, vicious and personally degrading comments often towards people who work for and with her. She probably got that from her dad Hugh Rodham, a deeply disturbed man.
Hillary and Bill are sociopaths, not unlike serial killers such as Ted Bundy. Seemingly personable and normal while brown nosing wealthy contributors or opinion makers, Hillary and Bill have no regard for the integrity and well being of others. They disregard rules and lie with practiced ease, not feeling guilt or empathy for others.
Bill is the kind of guy who can rape your sister upstairs and then come down to the living room and tell you what a great book he has read about women’s rights. Hillary is the kind of person who can be in the kitchen calling up a secret police to terrify your rape victim sister into silence, and then come out to the living room and ask what do you think about her latest speech on women’s and children’s rights.
Some of the goons that Hillary has used to cloak her and Bill’s Jerry Springer lifestyle and criminal activity include Ivan Duda (1982), Jerry Parks (1980’s), Jack Palladino (1992) and Anthony Pellicano (1990’s). Pellicano is now in JAIL in Los Angeles for the same kind of thug tactics that Hillary used him for. Also, Buddy Young, the head of Bill’s trooper detail and who Bill made #2 at FEMA, is additionally a dangerous criminal that Hillary and Bill has employed in their black operations. Terry Lenzer is also someone Hillary has used extensively.
Please forward this information to your Democratic friends and co-workers and ask that they (and you) vote for and support John Edwards, Barack OBAMA, Bill Richardson or any other Democratic candidate, and NOT Hillary. The difference is Hillary will break your kneecap to get to the White House; the others will not.
Thank-you and have a great day!

Kucinich won. Mind you, I support Kucinich, so I am biased, but he was the person who answered the questions as I would have wanted him to. He was straightforward on all of the issues. If you really want a change from what the Big Three are offering, such as ending NAFTA anad the WTO, Dennis is your man.

I though Biden did well if you're into interventionism. He was also correct in his response to the gun guy.

Gravel was Gravel, and he's right about following the money.

The rest, well, they're the ones who are pretty much the same.

Mr. Morrow:

If all of this is true, how come the Repubs don't USE it, to campaign against her?

And, if it is true, don't you suppose that the Repubs ARE going to use it, in order to crucify her, IF she is the Democratic Presidential candidat?

Do you mind telling us who you are FOR? (I suspect it's some extremely right-wing Republican candidate.)

Have a nice day, calumniator.

Oh, and by the way folks, it's going to be Clinton or Obama (who, although he can't debate, alse CANNOT make a political mis-step, either), and then, at the end, my prediction is that it's going to be Clinton AND Obama, and that they'll win, respectively, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. I know Obama has said that he isn't interested in the Vice Presidency, but that'll change "for the sake of the Party."

I think that wingnut Robert Morrow works for the RNC or the MSN.

Is everyone in agreement that the Clinton Haters are getting a little tiring?

I'm starting to think they have no life whatsoever but for trying to get the rest of us to hate Bill and Hillary Clinton as much as they do (and maybe Chelsea now, if we include Mitt "America, lighten up about Osama Bin Laden jokes" Romney as a Clinton Hater).

My question for them is, is America better off than it was eight years ago?
(Yeah, now you know why President Clinton still enjoys an approval rating in the 60's and Bush continues to maintain one in the 20's.)

As far as Hillary Clinton not being an agent for change...
I just find it amazing that THE FIRST WOMAN EVER is running for President and, for some, that's not considered an agent for change!
Wow.
To me, the phrase "history-making" sounds like it could POSSIBLY have an element of "change" in there.

But, anyway, any Democrat is going to beat any Republican in 2008.
My candidate is Clinton, but I love ALL these "guys." :)
Seriously, I've very proud of our Democratic field.
(eh, maybe not Gravel so much -- he's starting to wear on me.)

Hillary wins. Period.

Edwards throws his best debate performance overboard with a snide comment about Clinton's jacket.

In doing so, Edwards came off like a bitchy-queen.

While it won't help Edwards shake off his Breck-girl image, it does go some in making the Breck-girl also seem "catty".

I'm not a Clinton hater. I'm simply tired of Senator Clinton and her overly scripted "answers." She is extremely intelligent; I don't think anyone would argue with that, but she lacks integrity. Our next President needs to exemplify both characteristics.

Mike Gravel didn't get time on any of the serious issues. When he was directed a question, it was an immediate smear attack which he responded to truthfully. The only thing worse than soldiers dieing in vain is more soldier dieing in vain. The soldiers are dieing for NOTHING other than oil interests. Big corporations want to buy the Iraqi oil fields. Mike Gravel exposed the lies that got us into the Vietnam War, he also stopped the draft. This guy is actually looking out for the welfare of the people. He helps the environment and single handily spearheaded the Alaskan Pipeline, where we get 20% of our oil.

He is conscience of where money comes from and when he called our Obama on it, Obama acted like it didn't matter by saying the only reason you know about this is because I helped pass that law. He acknowledges that he is already in the pocket of the lobiest, just as Hillary is.

Wake up people, the media is taking you for a ride. Mike Gravel realizes this and tells the truth. Look for his interviews on Youtube, listen to how well he answers the questions. He actually answers them, with real results. He doesn't tiptoe.

More of the same is what you get with the others. Mike Gravel is for real.

Obama may have won the debate simply by performing better then he did in the last one. Hillary was pretty solid, Edwards had his moments, I liked Dodd, Biden was yelling at the camera, Kucinich is Kucinich, and Mike Gravel is a senile old loon who should be locked up in a padded cell, he was yelling and crying he needs a sedative and a cell on C-block, get rid of this guy.

Apart from the anger that Mr. Morrow has written in to his comments. The facts of the comment are quite correct. If you don't subscribe to any of these facts then you are a blind voter and are intellectually dishonest. Even if 1/2 of it were proven to be false, which it's not, why would anyone vote for anyone like this? Do all of you supporters have family and friends like this? Seriously?

Bill Richardson is being overlooked for his past success of many areas of Government. I urge everyone to learn more of his record. You will find out he is well qualified for the job. Mike

Clinton is always very good, but I thought Obama came in a little ahead this time. Richardson is doing better and Biden is always Biden - either you like him or you don't. Edwards wasn't anything special except here and there. Dodd has that circuitous Senate-speak he can't seem to shake.

If you like Hillary and support her, then by all means, vote for her. But keep in mind that she is to Republicans what Bush is to Democrats. Why would the Democrats want to put up a candidate that is so divisive? She carries lots of negative baggage, whether the reasons are deserved or not.

I think the Republicans are afraid of an Edwards or Obama candidacy, but they think they could beat Hillary. You think our Mr. Morrow's dossier is extensive and angry? I bet it's not the half of what the RNC and their proxies have waiting in store.

As Jon Alterman said on Countdown, the Republicans know they are in real trouble and the only weapon they have is to go down and dirty. There will be a lot of mud slung and they've got a lot of it stored and ready to sling at their biggest target.

I tell you this: The Republicans are more scared of runnng against Hillary than Obama. Despite the so-called baggage they say Hillary carries, they're aware the Clinton Machine will give them a real fight, not Obama who thinks only in terms of high-brow politics. In America, as I have noticed, you either play the game according to how the Republicans define it or you lose. Ask Kerry. So, please, give me Hillary.
