White House 2008 Rankings: The Democrats

25 Jul 2007 02:53 pm

Each week, NBC News political director Chuck Todd and I present our rankings on the likely order of finish for the presidential candidates.

We're headed into an August stasis, so don't look for these numbers to change much over the next 30 days.

These rankings are ordered by likelihood of winning the Democratic primary and are based on a number of factors, including organization, money, buzz and polling. Click here for Republican rankings.

1. Hillary Clinton -- Tactics matter at this stage, and Clinton is running a better tactical campaign. There's just no other way to put it. The straw man spat with the Pentagon was proof of just how good their communications operation is. Very impressive.

2. Barack Obama -- Probably the best way to describe this campaign right now is that Clinton is going 75 mph; Obama is going 50 and has plenty of gas to spare. Obama looks like he can eventually go faster in his campaign car, but he's not doing it yet.

3. John Edwards -- At what point is Elizabeth Edwards becoming too involved? Or, because of Bill Clinton's shadow, will nobody ever dare to hold her against her husband?

4. Bill Richardson -- Richardson, once again, is making progress (in Iowa polls, in national polls) when the spotlight is shining elsewhere. Can he handle media attention? Our guess: not yet

5. Christopher Dodd -- Dodd's got money for Iowa and seems more determined than ever to stick it out. Hey, you never know, right?

6. Joseph Biden -- Biden has serious money problems. Can he really run an "I'll just show up for the debates" campaign? It worked Monday night, but come Tuesday...

7. Dennis Kucinich

8. Mike Gravel

It is obvious why Hillary Clinton is running and Bill is not, despite the fact that people like Bill more than Hillary.

Is it so obvious why John Edwards is running and Elizabeth is not?

Come on, Mark... there's plenty of buzz about Biden since the 7/23 debate, most of it good. In contrast, Richardson will be gone soon, based on his poor performances at all of the debates so far. And Dodd isn't even registering, regardless of his abilities and financing. Keep on eye on Biden. He's going to continue surprising you and many others.

Apologies for misspelling your name, Marc.

One reason no one takes your polls (or that of Mr. Todd's seriously) is that you simply echo that of the MSM, and fail to get out into the real world and listen to the progressive voter when it comes to Democratic picks.

Who can forget Chuck Todd's very own prediction that President Bush would be at 50% approval rating by July 4, 2007?

From the mouth of Chuck Todd: http://mediamatters.org/items/200707050011

It's funny how no one in that same MSM has the guts to ask Mr. Todd about his polling prediction.

From the 21K-plus who respond to the monthy straw polls at Daily KOS, to the actual live poll at the Take Back America Convention, to the polling at MyDD, the DNC's Kicking Ass site, and just about every political forum which followed the recent YouTube debates, Hillary Clinton did not win ONE of them.

Keep echoing the Mainstream Media. But I'll guarantee you. These rankings will be shown to you later when the actual voter speaks -- and like Mr. Todd, I predict you'll remain silent in responding.

Get it through your head: Clinton leads in the MSM's eyes only.

Now Chuck - tell us about that Bush prediction; will ya?

Liz: the race rankings are published on Mondays, so this latest Democratic one came out before the debate.

Oops, forgot the link to the original publication of this week's Dem rankings. As you can see, it doesn't have the addendum under Biden as it does here.

Chuck Todd is obsessed with the money angle, always has been. I agree that Biden is the one to watch. He'll have enough money to do well in Iowa.

Oh please, Biden is a joke. How in the world is he going to gain traction? As Marc alluded to, you can't run a campaign based on debates that hardly anyone watches. And the debates are the only thing Biden has going for him. Frankly, I'm not even sure how much the debates are really helping him among the those that even watch them. I for one think he has done a good job at the debates (maybe even won one or two), but haven't for a second considered supporting him.

Edwards is my man but Senator Clinton has won EVERY debate thus far.

I have no idea why anybody would "hold [Elizabeth Edwards] against her husband". I have to think this odd comment is another example of the press trying to bury Edwards because they don't like him.

Hillary is really slapping Barack down on foreign
policy. She' done her homework.
