A Giuliani Fundraising Appeal: Only I Can Beat Hillary

22 Aug 2007 10:22 am

Rudy Giuliani's campaign will release an appeal today penned by campaign manager Michael DuHaime that for the first time, not only calls him the Only One Who Can Beat The Democrats, but proceeds to lay out just how Giuliani differs from the dreaded Dems.

The letter refers to Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama -- DuHaime tries to be ecumenical -- but then he slips at the end and writes that "your contributions" would be key in "helping Rudy go the distance and beat Hillary Clinton next November."

It draws a subtle contrast with Giuliani's main rival for the nomination, Mitt Romney, by portraying the primary campaign as a 50-state endeavor, rather than an IA/NH/SC-centric romp. And, obviously, it poses the question: Mitt, can YOU beat Hillary?

If a Democrat wins in 2008, Americans will have a President in the White House where the Terrorists' War on Us is mocked as simply a bumper sticker, taxes are increased and the government runs your health care. In contrast, a Rudy Giuliani administration will keep us on Offense in the Terrorists' War on Us, end illegal immigration and cut spending-- all promises based upon Rudy’s 12 Commitments to the American People. Voters know that Rudy is the candidate with the vision, the know-how and the proven results to move America forward and make it a better place for all of us.

The full letter is after the jump.

There is only one Republican candidate who can win the Republican nomination and beat the Democrats in 2008: Rudy Giuliani.

According to national and swing-state polls, Rudy is leading the field. The Rasmussen poll shows Rudy ahead of the leading Democrat candidate, Hillary Clinton, 47% to 40%. In important swing states such as Ohio, which has played a key factor in choosing the winner for many years, polls show Rudy is the only Republican candidate who can compete with the Democrats, with the next closest Republican candidate double digits behind Hillary and far behind Obama.. The same goes for other important battleground states such as Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Florida. If that's not enough, Rudy is the only candidate who can win the California primary and general election - making California competitive for Republicans for the first time since 1988.

These numbers are very encouraging, but we need your help to keep this momentum going. In just over four months, the first votes will be cast in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. Will you help Rudy continue to bring his message of strong leadership and proven results to voters across America? Your contribution of $500, $250, $100, $50 or $25 will go a long way in helping Rudy go the distance and beat Hillary Clinton next November.

This is going to be a long, hard fight and victory is a long way away. Rudy needs your help. Will you contribute $500, $250, $100, $50 or $25 to help Rudy continue bringing his message of protecting our families, securing our borders and lowering our taxes to voters across America? Any help you can give is appreciated.

Rudy is the right man at the right time. And is the only candidate who can beat the Democrats in November. You know that’s not just a line I’m feeding you because I’ve got the numbers to back me up.

Sincerely,

Rudy ran against Hillary before. She beat him like a rented mule. And if they go head to head nationally he'll be painted as the adulterous, corrupt, lunatic little tyrant he is, and he'll lose.

It might work if Republicans would look at the national polls. Rudy's the strongest candidate for the general.

Again, Rudy and his bizarre capitalization. I guess he's really serious about calling it the "Terrorists' War on Us." Talk about jingoism.

Rudy may be the most electable, but that's only because Mitt is a Morman.

Rudy is an ego-mananical, lying moderate who has no values or true policies. Plus, with his Foreign Affairs essay was a childish mess.

Hmmmm... how to beat that?

Rudy is "Bush on Steriods". He is also a liar who claimed that he spent as much time as rescue workers at 9-11 site. What a liar! He spent 29 hours at the trade center site while rescue workers spent 700 hours!!

America needs intelligent, experienced leadership in WH and not a phone one like Rudy's.

The only Republican that can beat any democrat is Ron Paul. Think about it: over 70% of the nation wants out troops home. The only Republican candidate that agrees is Ron Paul.

@ Ron Paul: The reason that 70% of the people polled want us out of Iraq is that they are totally ignorant as to the consequences. They blindly say what the main stream media tells them in sound bites. I haven't seen a poll yet that asked. Do you want the U.S. to loose the War in Iraq? In Doing so do you belive Iran will step in and impose a strict Islamic rule while controlling Iraq's oil resources. The average person in America is too ignorant to vote. That would include the majority of our politicians who follow the people, so they can get re-elected rather than leading. We won't be out of Iraq any time soon. It matters not who wins the election. To do so would be catastrophic. I support the troops and the mission!

I haven't seen a poll yet that asked. Do you want the U.S. to loose the War in Iraq?

Foiled by their knowledge of grammar, presumably.

I support the troops and the mission!

Then get on a plane and go over there, coward.

@goethean

Expected comments from a brain dead liberal.
Get on a plane and go over there? BTDT Let's hear about your contributions to our country rather than the personal attacks.

You don't have the slightest idea how things would unfold in Iraq after withdrawal, any more than you or your ilk predicted the mess we're currently in. I'm sure you were part of the cakewalk-flowers-candy crowd.

The mission is now gibberish, and all you're supporting is the continued pointless deaths of the troops.

@ML&J My Ilk? Cake walk flowers and candy crowd?
Your Ilk want's to hoite up the white flag. This isn't Nam buddy, the consequences geopolitically you are not capable of understanding.

This is the state of the party after the strategic brilliance of Karl Rove.

I'll tell you what, chuckles - make an attempt to master basic English, then come back here and "hoite" to your heart's content. Until then I'll continue to believe I'm far more able to understand consequences than you are.

@MLA@J Dude: typing with 3 broken fingers, and using one hand, you obviously get what I'm saying but have nothing to add to the conversation.

I lived and worked in New York during Rudy's mayoralty. He was succesful in many respects and that can't be taken away from him. That said, he was enormously polarizing which is probaby why he appeals to the far right crowd. In a general election with his persona and his baggage, have you seen his wife, and an electorate which is strongly weighted to women, she is going to destroy him. I've also seen a few of his effusions which can be summed up as if you liked Bush you'll love Rudy. Personally I hope they nominate him. The principled base will sit it out and he'll antagonize a majority of women.

I see some underestimation of the GOP Smear Machine in the comments here...and don't for a moment think that the GOP base will stay home against Hillary. She will mobilize the activists like none other. Have you seen the kind of things Right Wing orgs send out against her, and have been sending for years and years?

My personal feeling is that Rudy is a lunatic, mostly because he thinks reality is like the television show 24. Torture is not an American value and any person that advocates it for any reason must not be the President of this great, moral, just, and free country.

That doesn't mean that he won't be successful should he gain the nomination and run against Hillary. The smart political money would be on Rudy. Sorry folks, but watch and see.

Jim,

The war was lost many years ago. Please define "winning the war." The objective of this "war" has been re-defined numerous times since it began.

Also, if you think there are only two options available ("cut and run" vs. "stay the course"), then I am afraid you are the one too ignorant to vote. Don't be manipulated so easily by polarizing politicians. The irony is almost comical.

CD

Jim replies: "@MLA@J Dude: typing with 3 broken fingers, and using one hand, you obviously get what I'm saying but have nothing to add to the conversation."

Your own yahoo "I support the troops and the mission" comment really added a whole lot to the conversation, though. And I type with just 3 fingers myself, all of the time, but my posts don't end up looking like spilled vegetable soup. Come up with another excuse.

Rudy's act will not wear well as the campaign goes on, and I don't believe he'll be able to go 15 more months without having a public hissy fit over something or another. The slings of the wingnuts won't have much effect if we're still in Iraq, either.

Amazing.
Rudy's pitch is that if all his supporters chip in, he and he alone has the capability to be the #2 fundraising candidate in the race, after Obama?

QUOTE:Rudy ran against Hillary before. She beat him like a rented mule. And if they go head to head nationally he'll be painted as the adulterous, corrupt, lunatic little tyrant he is, and he'll lose

Er...what planet was that on there, genius? He dropped out of the race with this little inconvenience called cancer. Hillary Clinton ran her first Senate race against Rick Lazio.

And in case you don't know, anyone who runs against Hillary is totally inoculated against discussions of personal lives, in case you forgot who Monica Lewinsky was. And you probably don't know who Ray Jinnah is either, do you? Google these 4 words: Ray Jinnah Hillary Clinton

Read Giuliani's article in the latest issue of the Council on Foreign Relations' magazine Foreign Affairs. It's Dr. Strangelove stuff.

http://www.foreignaffairs.org/20070901faessay86501/rudolph-giuliani/toward-a-realistic-peace.html

He is one Republican who might get me to vote for Hillary. The alternative would be to leave the country.

Um, I didn't think Hillary had anything to do with Monica. Wasn't that Bill? And aren't they still married? I'm so confused. As for Giuliani, announcing your divorce at a press conference is about as low as a man can go. I'm not a fan of Hillary, but Giuliani is just plain scum.

Whipcord, are you saying that Hillary and Monica were getting it on? Cigars? This is juicy, please do tell...

Whipnut writes: "Er...what planet was that on there, genius? He dropped out of the race with this little inconvenience called cancer. Hillary Clinton ran her first Senate race against Rick Lazio.

Rudy was pre-9/11 in those days, and he quit the race because he was behind in the polls and he couldn't even come close to matching the Clinton money machine. He knew if he lost to her his career was over, so he used a minor cancer scare as an excuse to drop out.

Ray Jinnah is a minor character who won't mean jack to anyone in this coming election, especially given Rudy's own filthy connections to Bernard Kerik.

And Monica only drags down Clinton in the fevered imaginations of wingnuts.

Bush/Cheney gave up the hunt for Bin Laden in Afghanistan to invade Iraq which now provides record profits to contracting conglomerates and Big Oil at the expense of our troops. Rudy Giuliani gleefully supports this. If you have bought the war on terror "mission" in Iraq than you've been duped. Al Qaeda has regrouped in Pakistan and are as strong as they were pre-9/11. The mission in Iraq has been a disaster. All of this has been widely reported. Only a dupe would by in to Rudy's take on things. His support of Bush's fear monger profiteering policies makes him a dinosaur in todays political climate. This is a nation for the people, not the corporations and the tide is turning as it should. Oh yes, and Bush has run up record deficits and debt, beyond any so called liberal president in history. I'm sure youre grandkids will appreciate that, along with all the animosity fostered in the Middle East and in our fomer allies. Wake the hell up.

If Giuliani is elected President then the Terrorists are going to make fun of US by showing everyone videos of Our President modeling an assortment of glittering evening gowns (not that there's anything wrong with it) and the whole world will Laugh at US and we won't get any Respect for another 4 YEARs. How is that going to help us Fight Back Against the Terrorist's War on Us(tm)?

Just to be clear that I'm understanding you, you're saying that Hillary will welcome discussions of her personal, family life in a campaign?????

Whipcord,
It matters not whether she will welcome it. The righties are going to throw it at her no matter what. It can be argued that a "wronged" wife who stuck by her husband and held her marriage together is going to win a lot of sympathy with voters. I guess it's too much to hope for that the election will be run on issues rather than private lives. In that area Rudi is a looser also.

It was transparently obvious in 2000 that George Bush was an even bigger phony than Bill Clinton, something I would have said was impossible in 1998. Yet Bush got elected and even ran close to Gore in the popular vote. Rudy is right up there with the previous two jokers, but it appears from some of the comments that Americans just like being jerked off. Rudy is what we want and deserve.

@ Jim: "I support the troops and the mission". So do I Jim. Which candidate received the most donations from military personnel? It was Ron Paul. So if you "support our troops" why don't you support the candidate they support? You don't support our troops by telling them to just stick it out and stay the course.

And as for understanding the consequences of pulling out, I have thought about it as much as you. In either scenario, I think it is clear that many people are going to die. But the sooner we're gone, the sooner it's over. This isn't a war we can win by force. We must win the hearts of our enemies.

I bet he has some fantastic property to sell us as well, real cheap for what we get to ;)
