AMES: A County Chair In Iowa Punishes Candidates Who Skip Straw Poll

A Republican county chairman in Iowa wants to punish presidential candidates who decided to opt out of next weekend's GOP straw poll in Ames. Hardin County chair Andy Cable won't invite these candidates' representatives to political meetings in his county, denying them valuable opportunities to recruit activists.

That's within his purview. The Ames event raises lots of money for the state party. And Hardin County is in Ames's back yard. As county chair, Cable must tend to the interests of his constituents.

But Cable has a potential conflict of interest. He is also a paid organizer for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.

On June 11, Mr. Cable sent an e-mail to representatives of former candidate Jim Gilmore, Sen. John McCain and ex-NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani. McCain and Giuliani announced that month that they would not spend millions to try and win the Ames Straw Poll on Aug. 11.

"As Chairman of the Hardin County Iowa Republicans I would like to have my name removed from any of your mailing lists," Cable writes. "Since you have chosen to sidestep an important part of the state Republican caucus process and thus show non support of loyal Iowan caucus goers I wish to ask you to have my name removed from your mailing lists and to inform you that your candidate and any representatives will not be invited to any Hardin County Central Committee meetings or local Republican functions. These are open only to those candidates that respect our system."

A copy of Cable's e-mail was obtained from an Iowa Republican.

Mr. Cable has publicly endorsed Romney and is among those Republicans Romney's campaign has paid $3,000 for "GOTV Consulting."

Tim Albrecht, a Romney spokesman, said that the decision "was made solely by the members on the Hardin County Republican Central Committee’s Executive Board. At no time did they solicit input from our campaign. this is strictly a local, internal matter in one of Iowa’s 99 counties."

Cable, in an e-mail to this column, said he is offended at the suggestion of conspiracy and insists that those who question the motivations of county's executive committee are trying to make a hornest's nest out of a hay pile.

"I am very proud to say we have hosted 9 candidates in the last year for numerous events in Hardin County. They have have all gotten a fair shake and a lot of support from the Hardin County Republican Central Committee. Of the three campaigns that chose to not support the Iowa Straw Poll only the McCain organization had ever even attended a Central Committee meeting or requested to be contacted about any events we would be holding- they never asked and therefore were never refused our help. The only subsequent request for help to me was sent from the Guliani campaign to send to my county mailing list the info on a Guliani event 45 miles from my county, which I originally refused on the grounds they were not supporting the Iowa Straw Poll and our Executive Committee had voted to not offer support to ANY candidate that did not support us locally."

Cable said he subsequently discussed the issue with Tony Delgado, an advisor to Giuliani.

He continues: "As to your question about conflict of interest- I see none. There are no rules that a County Chair can not support the candidate of their choice- nor that they can not be compensated for the work they do. I can give names of other County Chairs on the payroll for Tom Tancredo, John Cox to name a couple. I have been a political consultant for several years and the Campaign Manager for three elections for a State Representative. Everyone in my county knows this."

Cable said that the decision to bar the non-Ames candidates was made by the county party's executive committee and denied that his affiliation with Romney influenced their votes.

"I think whoever has sent you this "story" is making a mountain out of a mole hill and trying to create a conflict that does not exist -- my suggestion to them is pay attention to the Iowa voters- make friends not enemies of the local Central Committees and if they are serious about the caucuses then get out and meet the rural voters as all the other candidates have and take
Iowans seriously instead of pointing fingers at those candidates that have done the ground work and the Iowans who have already chosen who they support."

Here's Cable's original e-mail to the campaigns in its entirety:

From: Andy [mailto:XXXX@starband.net]

As Chairman of the Hardin County Iowa Republicans I would like to have my name removed from any of your mailing lists.

Local county GOP organizations in Iowa are an integral part of the Rep. Party of Iowa and depend on their staff and guidance in order to run the statewide Caucuses in January.

For years the Straw Poll in August has been a big part of our fundraising to support these caucuses. The ability for a candidate to be available to 30K or more Iowa activists and be compared to others on the same day is a huge influence on the decision making for those that attend the January event. Iowans votes can not be bought and even an open tent with the literature, volunteers and the candidate available is important- the stage time the candidate gets in front of these activists is even more valuable.

Since you have chosen to sidestep an important part of the state Republican caucus process and thus show non support of loyal Iowan caucus goers I wish to ask you to have my name removed from your mailing lists and to inform you that your candidate and any representatives will not be invited to any Hardin County Central Committee meetings or local Republican functions. These are open only to those candidates that respect our system.

Sincerely

Andy Cable

Hardin County Republican Chairman

Bravo!!!! This Iowan won't support any candidate who skips the Ames Straw Poll either. The Straw Poll is a fundraiser for the state GOP and part of the proceeds help fund the respective county parties. Thumbs down on McCain & Giuliani for bypassing the Straw Poll. This was a big missed opportunity for Fred Thompson.

By choosing to skip the straw poll basically chose that they don't think "you" are important enough for their time. I mean more evidence do you need that they are out for themselves then that?

Cand: "Hey campaign manager, will this benefit my campaign?"
Mang: "Not likely, sir"
Cand: "Okay well then F**k them"

Good for you Andy. If you are a Presidential candidate, then you should respect Iowa traditions. I don't even think Rudy and McCain should be allowed in the debate on August 5th. There names should not be on the ballot either. I hope everyone here repudiates the two gentlemen.

Ok. So Romney's consultant is keeping other candidates out of the loop? I guess I can believe that, but I find it harder to believe that it is not against campaign ethics (if those exist anymore) to send flyers to Iowan supporters offering to pay all of their expenses, if they agree to vote for you.

Mitt is the man, and next president of our great United States, but upset over Rudy not coming had second hopes for him, but will always respect his handling of 911 that the democrats put us in

Your dillusional there bud. Ron Paul is our next president. Pull your head out of the sand and look around.Mitt Romney, LMFAO what a joke along with all the other candidates except Dr. Ron Paul. Do your research.

I believe strongly that Ron Paul has a good shot at winning Ames Straw Poll. He is the candidate of the people and champion of the Constitution.

Dr. Ron Paul is the only major candidate not owned by military-industrial-complex, corporations, special interest, etc. Fix the system and vote Ron Paul. And tell everyone you know. Now is the time to set ourselves free.

Ron Paul will help restore a proper balance of power between the Federal and State governments, as the Constitution requires. And if he can just say ‘No’ to congress’ overspending for a few years then he will have done a great service for our country.

Ron Paul has a good chance of winning. The old media is just too slow to realize what is happening.

Ron Paul is 1st on YouTube, Meetup, MySpace, Technorati, Alexa, Clickz, Google, etc.

Ron Paul places 1st or 2nd in every straw poll, debate, and active participation survey.

Dr. Ron Paul is the man of integrity and courage that America needs at this time.

We are making history -- Vote Ron Paul!

Ron Paul Who??? Wait till the outcome of the straw poll....

Politics is a hardmall game! This is a great example of how it works!

I will DEFINETLY use this example and Ambinder's blog in my Fall Iowa Caucus Class at Iowa State University! Since I will have lots of grass roots political activists from other countries in my Internet class this is an example of how you can be tough in politics without resorting to guns!

All politicians are servants of THE PEOPLE. Here is a textbook example of what a Presidential candidates resume should contain. All other need not apply until you've aquired these references.

Congressman Ron Paul is the leading advocate for freedom in our nation’s capital. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Paul tirelessly works for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to sound monetary policies. He is known among his congressional colleagues and his constituents for his consistent voting record. Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution. In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Dr. Paul is the “one exception to the Gang of 535” on Capitol Hill.
Ron Paul was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Gettysburg College and the Duke University School of Medicine, before proudly serving as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s. He and his wife Carol moved to Texas in 1968, where he began his medical practice in Brazoria County. As a specialist in obstetrics/gynecology, Dr. Paul has delivered more than 4,000 babies. He and Carol, who reside in Lake Jackson, Texas, are the proud parents of five children and have 17 grandchildren.
While serving in Congress during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dr. Paul’s limited-government ideals were not popular in Washington. In 1976, he was one of only four Republican congressmen to endorse Ronald Reagan for president.
During that time, Congressman Paul served on the House Banking committee, where he was a strong advocate for sound monetary policy and an outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve’s inflationary measures. He was an unwavering advocate of pro-life and pro-family values. Dr. Paul consistently voted to lower or abolish federal taxes, spending and regulation, and used his House seat to actively promote the return of government to its proper constitutional levels. In 1984, he voluntarily relinquished his House seat and returned to his medical practice.
Dr. Paul returned to Congress in 1997 to represent the 14th congressional district of Texas. He presently serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. He continues to advocate a dramatic reduction in the size of the federal government and a return to constitutional principles.
Congressman Paul’s consistent voting record prompted one of his congressional colleagues to say, “Ron Paul personifies the Founding Fathers’ ideal of the citizen-statesman. He makes it clear that his principles will never be compromised, and they never are.” Another colleague observed, “There are few people in public life who, through thick and thin, rain or shine, stick to their principles. Ron Paul is one of those few.”
Brief Overview of Congressman Paul’s Record:
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.
He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress
