AMES: The Romney Victory

11 Aug 2007 10:10 pm

Mitt Romney won the Ames straw poll tonight because of a combination of plod and money.

Romney was exultant in a brief speech to supporters, and campaign aides, attempting to keep expectations in check with the results, said the margin of victory represented a major validation of Romney’s extensive and expensive efforts in the first caucus state.

Since three major rivals skipped the event, since Romney had visited the state 17 times, since he spent so heavily to transport supporters to Ames today and because he ran Ames-related several statewide television advertisements, his victory was all but certain.

The temperature was on Romney’s mind as he addressed reporters. “It feels great to win. It’s a warm one. But if you thought it was hot, it felt cool to me to win.” Romney said the victory shows he can win “purple states” like Iowa. He acknowledged that turnout was low and said his campaign had anticipated a slightly larger number of votes.

Asked about McCain and Giuliani’s performances, Romney couldn’t resist a taunt. “It’s too bad the other guys weren’t competing here… but they ‘d have played if they thought they could have won,” he said.

Michael DuHaime, Rudy Giuliani’s campaign manager, released a statement that did not mention Romney. “After tonight’s straw poll, Rudy Giuliani continues to be the candidate well-positioned to win the Republican nomination and the only candidate in the race who can beat the Democrats in 2008.”

Ken Mehlman, the former RNC chairman who ran George W. Bush’s Iowa effort in 1999 and who is neutral in the presidential race, said Romney’s victory was impressive.

“I think that the results show that he made a serious commitment and that it paid off,” Mehlman said.

Romney's straw poll operation had an Election Day feel to it. The campaign set up a boiler room in Ames to monitor straw poll "turnout." Volunteers telephone recalcitrant supporters who had pledged to attend the straw poll but failed to get on their assigned bus. Campaign aides called the straw poll a rehearsal for the Iowa caucuses in January. Other advisers said that Romney would use the momentum from his win to consolidate the center-right foot-soldiers in the Republican base.

The second flight out of Ames belongs to Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, who manifestly did not spend nearly as much as third-place finisher Sam Brownback and who has been dogged by questions about his ability to harness his support.

“We had two fish and five loaves and it fed 5,000,” Huckabee said of his victory.

Whether Huckabee leverages his finish to raise money and enhance his profile remains to be seen. Huckabee has been allergic to high dollar fundraising and has virtually no presence on the Internet.

Michael Farris, a Huckabee adviser who runs the Home School Legal Defense Fund, said Huckabee’s campaign has existed on a “shoe-string budget” so far. “But it just goes to show that he is the best communicator in this race.”

Sen. Brownback spent about $325,000, his campaign said.

Several of the lesser-known candidates staked their viability on strong Ames showings, including ex Wi-Gov. Tommy Thompson, who said he would drop out if he did not place second.

"plod" money, and recounting the votes....you mean? LOL!

Giuliani the only one who can win in '08? Please. Ex-mayors don't grow up to be president. It simply doesn't happen.

This looks very good for Huckabee. He has a nice tax plan and should be a lock for the conservative vote. I think he's the true winner of this straw poll!

This is nothing but bad news for Romney. He nedded 20-points plus to make it a real victory. He didn't beat the bigget names in the GOP field, so why should he make a big deal out of this?

More straw poll analysis:
http://political-buzz.com/

Romney won Iowa with fewer votes than Steve Forbes won in 1999. This is mainly a story of an apathetic and unmotivated Iowa GOP. (Forbes won 4921 votes; Romney was 4516).

No mention of Ron Paul? 9% of the vote and one of the most active candidates in the Straw Poll.

Adam - does Huckabee support the War for Israel in the Middle East? If he does he is neither a conservative nor an American and the American population is done with it.

So, you can have a real conservative who is against this War for Israel, or you can have a Leftist Democrat who is against this War for Israel. Neocons have overplayed their hand.

Go Romney!!! Like very impressive!! I actually think Huckabee would have beaten Rudy and McCain and that's why they dropped out. Go Romney!!!

I think that a Giuliani / Huckabee ticket would be difficult to beat.

Giuliani or any neocon would be just as easy to beat no matter who runs as VP. People don't care about VP.

"It's definitely impressive how [unintelligible] placed fourth and even [unintelligible] shouldn't be ashamed at fifth place. [Unintelligible] will no doubt continue his campaign focusing on [unintelligible], and [unintelligible] and his band of internet supporters will continue supporting their largely [unintelligible] ideas. Oddly, [unintelligible] hasn't been able to raise his signature issue of [unintelligible] in the debates because we, the MSM just don't feel comfortable discussing such grown-up topics. However, this shows that [unintelligible] matters to a lot of people, but despite that we'll keep ignoring it."

even if ron paul pays for the recount, I'd bet he still spent less $$$ there than any of the top 4 guys. in fact, he barely spent a week there...a lot less time that the top 4. even with so little investment, he did a lot better than he did in the so-called scientific polls. no ip spoofing here..

Solid Victory for Romney. McCain, Rudy and Thompson were to scared to show up.

Romney would have won no matter what!!!

Romney is the only one of these guys that is a proven leader.

He has my vote!!!!!

Mitt Romney and his supporters including me in Maine have won a small battle in a greater war! The battle was not wether the other Republican Candidates would take him down. It was wether the "Main Stream Media" would diminish his campaign and his faith. The greater story here is that yes even in Iowa a purple state, Mitt Romney is very electable. People are begining to see that Mitt is very much a man of integrity. The people who try to tear his candidacy down by attacking his faith are being seen for what they are "hatefull fear mongerers". Great Job Mitt and team!! Keep the positive can - do attitude and you like John Kennedy will make history and make America Greater more prosperous country!

John S. Maine

I disagree about Huckabee having no presence on the internet. On the contrary, he has been making great use of the conservative netroots, particularly Iowa and NH bloggers. He has an extensive blogroll of supporters and has raised a lot of his admittedly meager funds from the internet. You are right about his dislike of fundraising. If he wants to have any shot, he needs to call for those $2300 checks from now until the end of the year.

Full disclosure: I am a Huckabee donor. Not able to be one of those $2300 donors though.

SO, who does the main stream media support?
I have never heard a candidate ever say "Well, at least I have the main stream media on my side". Just an observation, lol.

Who cares what the turnout was? The fact is that Gov. Romney got a higher percentage of the vote than Pres. Bush got in 1999. Pres. Bush was much better known and much further up in the national polls. Mitt won; and he will continue to impress. He has a 16 point lead in New Hampshire, which is far less conservative than Iowa. Huckabee and the others won't be able to compete there. You can't win the nomination by simply telling people you are an evangelical.

Huckabee has no online presence?? According to Technorati he does...

"Giuliani the only one who can win in '08? Please. Ex-mayors don't grow up to be president. It simply doesn't happen."

R. Washington, what a stupid statement. first of all, New York City is one of the preeminent global economic centers, with its business, financial, legal, and media organizations having worldwide influence. New York is an important cultural center, with many museums, galleries, and performance venues. As the home of the United Nations, the city is a hub for international diplomacy. new york city is bigger population wise then 40 states, including Massachusetts by 2.5 million, and Tennessee 3.5 million.

to act as if being the chief executive of that is somehow not experience good enough for president is possibly the stupidest thing ever said.

That vaporous phantom of epic fictitiousness arises from the oubliette and once again stands before an invertebrate media that still refuses to see what a growing number of the American people already do. Ron Paul is real, he is here and he proving that media today is more bovine excrement fueled dragster ride to the fantasy fringe of a dead enterprise…the once proud fourth estate. Good job Ron Paul and to all those imaginary people and holograms that filled television screens with Ron Paul for President signs. I thank you and America thanks you. – Yours truly, the United States Constitution.

romney may win iowa, and new hampshire, but thats where it ends. this is a very different campaign this year. the whole point of moving up the primaries was so the big states didn't have to follow iowa's and nh's lead. he may win iowa and nh, and then he will be finished. giuliani will edge out the extremely lazy thompson in SC, followed by a big win in florida 10 days later. rudy will then win landslides in ny, nj, illinois, pennsylvania, and california, and a few others by closer margins. by then giuliani will have anywhere from 650-850 delegates, putting him less then a handful of primaries from the nomination. romney at this point will be completely eliminated, leaving thompson to pick up some southern primary wins for the next few weeks, but eventually after rudy wins oregon, minnesota, and texas, he will have the whole thing rapped. mitt will then have to meet the mayor in person and apologize for all the negative campaigning and beg for a vp slot, which will likely go to thompson or mccain.

face it, romney just cant compete nationally with rudy, and he has zero chance to stop hillary.

Don't forget headquarters of the Council on Foreign Relations as well as a great deal of nefarioius counter-cultural orgs that feel at home there.

I really can't see what legitimacy Brownback has left to his campaign.

He brought in over a hundred busses, had the second most organized campaign in the state, and worked his heart out for third place? Behind Huckabee, who basically came with nothing more than a speech?

Brownback's been trailing Huckabee in the polls.

Brownback's been trailing Huckabee in the debates.

Brownback's been running a sleazy smear campaign...Huckabee is a gentleman.

Brownback flip flops on immigration votes in the course of 10 minutes depending on the wind...Huckabee has an executive track record as one of the longest serving and most successful Governors.

Huckabee is the only one who can revive people after Brownback's speeches bore them to death.

And now Brownback and his 100 busses lose the poll to Huckabee and a bass guitar.

Bye bye Brownies.

The GOP pushes on its voters a multimillionaire religious zealot! Boy what a shocking surprise there eh?
I hope you realize that if Romney becomes president, he will do everything in his power to funnel money into Utah and the Mormon Church. Oklahoma's Ernest Istook did it many times, denying Oklahoma a light railway system and shipping off the cash to Utah.
Americans don't make the same mistake and end up funding the Mormon Cult with tax dollars.

Rudy is a tool. See what the good people of NY have to say about him.

http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0732,barrett,77463,6.html/1

Congressmen Paul for 2008 restore the freedoms that we have lost. End the world police.

Can you say RON PAUL? The ONLY real Constitutionist in the Senate and thank God, in the race to be the next President of the USA. All this grandstanding is meaningless... the only serious hope for America is a man who votes according to the U.S. Constitution.

Now that's amazing. Romney won the straw because of money and plod and all this time I thought you had to win with votes. Thanks for explaining that to me.:)

Ron Paul got 9% .. Not quite the 30 to 80% he gets in all of the on-line polls, but way ahead of the 1 to 2% the traditional polls give him.

Great spot to grow his support base from. There is indeed some hope for America!

Steve Savage -

What you say is absurd, but even if true I would love to see the money we funnel to the Zionist cult funnelled to the AMERICAN religion of LDS....and I'm an atheist!

Talking Points memo:

"Keep in mind, organizers hoped for 20,000 straw-poll participants today, and the total was just over 14,000. Eight years ago, nearly 24,000 Republicans took part in the event."

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/016490.php

Steve Savage,

The LDS church does not need the feds to fund thier church. They are well fnanced by full tithe payers. Did you know that BYU receives no governemnt funding. With government funding comes governemnt control. They do not like the government fingers in thier affairs.

Thats not to say that Utah won't get any funding, After all there is lots of coal and shale oil projects pending. Does this country need oil?

Not everyone in utah is LDS. Look at the miners who are tramped. They are Cathlic and Baptist. You can tell by the complaints about the company not having a translator for Spanish. If they had been LDS they would have had 5 translators their the first day from the LDS church.

Regarding chances of beating Hitlery, none of the GOP favorites have a chance. Only Ron Paul can beat her. He outflanks her from both the right AND the left.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/012082.html

Mitt Romney is by far the best choice for the Republican Presidential nomination. As this whole race began, there was talk about whether to call him only a second-tier candidate, about whether he could ever attract votes outside of the urban centers.

He's clearly the most articulate and best organized member of the bunch--from either side of the aisle. His platform is far more clearly defined than any of the Republican frontrunners and free for viewing on his website. In short, he has done the important things well, and his track record has been nothing short of amazing. Harvard Law and Business--at the top of his class in both. Economic wonder--stabilizing over 150 flagging corporations and turning them into profitmakers again. International organizer--turning around a flagging Olympic Games. An excellent governor in Mass, even with a legislature stacked heavily, heavily against him.

Giuliani is about to take a major hit in the Republican polls. It's just a matter of time before the general populace begins paying attention. And when it does, the word is going to get around that he's both pro-choice and was an avid supporter of keeping New York a sanctuary city for illegal aliens.

Americans don't take too kindly to people entering our country and trampling on our laws--I don't care what color you are.

I have a few things to say,

Ron Paul
Ron Paul
Ron Paul

I saw the passion on the internet, of the supporters of Ron Paul in Iowa.

This doesn't pass the smell test. I will be sending Ron Paul some money really quick.

Dr. Paul if you are reading this, I hope your wife is better and please ask for a recount.

They are screwing all of us. Mitt is a neocon joke and I know the American people are sick of neocons and this war and thats a fact jack.

The "victory" means NOTHING, other than it shows that one with lots of money (like Romney) can "buy" a straw poll!

http://osi-speaks.blogspot.com/2007/08/gop-holds-straw-poll-in-iowa-should.html#links

Wow some IOWANS voted in a 'straw pole'!!! Most for MITT-the-Mormon, in second place a real 'HUCKLEBERRY', the rest of the 'EVIL REPUBLICANTS' decided to 'skip' this terriffic harbiger of 'Whom still thrills to the 76 trombones of the MUSIC MAN' in the quest for 2008??? WHO CARES REALLY WHAT HAPPENS IN IOWA??? Certainly not FRED, or RUDY, or even DEMBHOLE HILLARY eh???

For those wanting to down-play the stats and numbers of voters, consider this:

In previous years, ANYONE could vote in the Iowa straw vote.

This year, voters had to provide proof of residency ....

Congratulations, Team Mitt.

Yes, Romney spent money to win the straw poll. Quite being idiots people. It was money that he was going to spend anyway. He clearly needs to get the buzz from some early victories. He's not just going to walk into Iowa or any state as some Northeastern governor and expect to get anywhere. He's played the early game well and is going to reap the reward.

The point that everyone is missing about Ames is just how poorly Giuliani, McCain and Thompson did. Yes, they "skipped" the event, but shouldn't that name recognition have garnered them more support? This proves that they can't just rest on their media hype and expect to win anything. Romney went into a red state and took one-third of a vote. What happens when the other candidates start dropping out. Are those three hoping that those votes will just start floating into their camps?

This poll also proves one more thing that the media will ultimately ignore; the Mormon issue. Romney took a significant percentage of votes from a red state. Romney will only have to convince another 20-25% to get him over 50% support and ultimately a victory. Romney is a viable candidate.

Ultimately I wanted to see more of Thompson, but he does not seem to be taking this race seriously. This troubles me. I probably would have found myself in his camp. Now, I am with Romney until someone else can do better. He's convinced me.

I found some gold tablets that say Ron Paul is going to win the Republican nomination.

Perspective: In the last three election cycles in which Republicans had competitive fights for the nomination, the eventual nominee finished among the top three in the straw poll.

1999 STRAW POLL

2007 STRAW POLL

Mitt Romney, 4516
Mike Huckabee, 2587
Sen. Sam Brownback, 2192

TOTAL 9295

Source: Republican Party of Iowa

Does anyone believe that money and organization has nothing to do with the results? How does an unknown get known? Do you bloggers think TV ads are free? Setting up state organizations is free?

Steve Forbes is richer than Romney, and do you believe the Bush (both of them) won in Iowa on a shoestring budged? Guess which year the least amount of money was spent (clue: 1987).

Romney raised the money to spend in the primary and he did. And he put his own money where his mouth is.

Do you really think Ron Paul wouldn't have spent more money if he had raised more money? His supporters sent almost nothing, he spent almost nothing, and his campaign now means almost nothing.

Keep in mind that intolerant "Christians" launched a huge anti-Mormon campaign, but Iowa Republicans were able to see deeper and see who Romney really is.

When Romney said, "I love Iowa," you could FEEL the love. When he talked about the Olympic flag moment, there were tears in his eyes.

Romney is clearly a REAL man who voters love when they get to know him. It's hard to see how any of the other Republican candidates can beat the Clintons.

For those of you that are having trouble with the math:

1999 STRAW POLL

George W. Bush 7,418 31.3%
Steve Forbes 4,921 20.7%
Elizabeth Dole 3,410 14.4%

TOTAL 15,749 Total Vote: 23,685

2007 STRAW POLL

Mitt Romney 4,516 31.5%
Huckabee: 2,587 18.1%
Brownback: 2,192 15.3%

TOTAL 9,295 Total Vote: 14,302

On total percentage of the votes cast:
Romney 31.5% to Bush 31.3%.

On total vote count: It sure looks to me like the Giuliani and McCain folks didn't show up. This is reflected by their combined LOW vote total. If they had shown up the vote count, I am sure, would have been much closer to the 1999 straw poll totals. Romney still would have won but the no shows decided not to cast a wasted vote.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

"Do you really think Ron Paul wouldn't have spent more money if he had raised more money? His supporters sent almost nothing, he spent almost nothing, and his campaign now means almost nothing."

Posted by VSteven | August 12, 2007 10:13 AM

I think that this is an absurd statement. Ron Paul doesn't need to spend excess money on ANYTHING. Ron Paul got around $600,000 in Q1 and about 2.7 million in Q2.. That's not a lot of money?! For someone who is not well known (yet) I think that's a good amount especially since he has most of that! It's called being fiscally responsible. Ron Paul knew there was no need to buy carnival rides and sno cone machines and bus people there. His supporters show up where ever on their own money. I drive to Iowa I pay for my own gas, I don't need the campaign supplying my way there.

But if I was weakminded and didn't know anything and some guy was schmoozing me with free tickets and busrides and carnival rides, t-shirts, food, etc I might be voting for him as well.

Good one snuffy! Facts are an anesthetic for the progressives, the holier-than-thous, and the mentally challenged. So you can go back to sleep.

Sorry, that was just my kneejerk reaction. I'm sure if you gave it some thought you could come up with a cogent and informative assesment of the straw poll. I'd like to read it so why not give it a try?

The Ron Paul campaign is going to the end. So, the haters that want to see us drop out after this are out of luck.

You can't get rid of us. The Revolution is growing.

The big loser is Fred Thompson. He could have been in the straw poll and maybe came in second. I'm glad Huckabee showed them it was a mistake to sit out on the straw pol. Now Rudy and Fred are rushing into Iowa this week. Go Romney!!!

This straw poll is just a fundraiser for the state party, and the Iowas GOP openly acknowledges that.

Still, it helps validate any perceptions that might be developing about campaigns that are out of the running.

Regarding Ron Paul, he avoided that validation - good for him. I still don't get how they plan to compete when they aren't opening local offices, but that's a point for another thread. Some of the other Republicans didn't avoid that and probably ought to start re-assessing their chances.

ASmith: You are correct. Actually, I mentioned Ron Paul, not because he is not a respectable candidate, but to show that as an unknown he did not spend much to get his name out there and the results show it. If his message resonates I'm sure he will be a viable candidate by February 2008.

But if Rep. Paul doesn't get his message out (obviously he has done a superb job on the Internet) he won't be the party standard bearer, because that, unfortunately, takes money. A LOT of it. Chances are good that Romney will be left in the dustbin of history, but if Paul does not run with higher visibility the Party will choose someone else.

I think Ron Paul would make a very effective Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The irony is that I think Mitt Romney would be the one person running who might agree.

I'm an independent voter who leans towards Obama right now, with Edwards as a second choice, but I have to say that Ron Paul's success in the straw poll is being underplayed severely; media expectations until a day or so before Ames essentially had Paul finishing tenth ahead of John Cox. Finishing fifth means Paul beat expectations more than any other GOP candidate, even Huckabee; the fact that some reporters started hedging their bets when they got to Ames and saw all the Paul signs does not affect how the long-term expectations of Paul were exceeded, and that's what matters, just like a sudden concern about Romney the very day of the poll would not have softened the blow had he lost, given the long-term media expectations for him.

Furthermore, Romney, Brownback, and to a lesser degree, Tancredo all had buses; just as Huckabee deserves credit since he had no buses, so does Paul, if not moreso since Paul only has visited Iowa a total of three times this year. And yet, he beat out the one candidate who has spent more time in Iowa than any other Republican, Tommy Thompson.

When one looks at the broader picture of the GOP race, both Tancredo and particularly Paul deserve credit for beating expectations, in addition to Huckabee; just as the straw poll shows Romney getting 31% of the vote, and the social conservative vote for Huckabee and Brownback at a combined 33%, it also shows Paul and Tancredo getting a combined 23% of the vote, which is also a significant chunk (particularly in a caucus state with a potentially crowded field). It appears that about one quarter of diehard Republican advocates in Iowa represent the "darkhorse" vote, or perhaps more aptly, the "change agent" vote, as both Paul and Tancredo would change things far more drastically than the frontrunners or the social conservative duo (albeit in two diametrically opposed directions when it comes to foreign policy). It's an important dynamic to note.

huckabee doesn't believe in evolution...

do we really need another idiot as president?

ron paul is the only conservative...

The delusional will never understand reality. After scaling back his efforts in Iowa, Mitt Romney wins by the largest percentage in history. And the delusional call it bad news. Comical.

The real bad news, obviously, is for Fred and Rudy. Rudy dropped because he knew he had no chance of winning. He tried to re-vamp his efforts in Iowa recently, probably in hope that he'd have a fair showing at the straw poll. And he garners a mere 1% of the vote. Fred's weak showing demonstrates how little Iowans care for the chubby actor.

Huckabee will get stronger now. But his support will be from the weak pro-Fred crowd, making both candidates mediocre.

This was a great win by Mitt Romney who is probably the most qualified candidate to ever run for President of the USA.
Mitt won the Iowa straw vote with 31.5% of the vote in 1999 George Bush won by a slightly smaller percentage at 31.3%. Mitt’s margin of victory was even greater than Bush’s in 1999. There Mitt’s margin of victory was 13.4% and Bush’s was 10.5%.
Mitt also was impressive in that his average polling number in Iowa to date is at 24.8% according to Real Clear Politics.com. So taking nearly 32% of the vote shows that conservative Iowans like Mitt Romney’s message and where he stands on the issues. Mitt worked hard for this win and Americans like it when public officials work hard, he deserved to win. The fact that Rudy, John, and Fred were scare to compete with Mitt is going to send a message to all Americans that their organization and passion to win and compete in all States is lagging.
The Romney’s would make a great First Family and I believe if Americans liked Ronald Reagan they are going to love Mitt Romney!

If America's liberal wolfpack press and their followers want to continue with their negative sterotypes of this man and his family so be it.
Mitt has no skeletons in his closet and is as "solid" a candidate this country has seen in a long time.

Mike Huckabee deserves credit for the good showing. I think his self-depreciating good humor makes up for some of the name-calling earlier in the campaign.

It is ironic though, that Mike Farris supports Huckabee. I don't recall Huckabee mentioning homeschooling at the straw poll, but Ron Paul did mention it. Though it was part of a joke, Huckabee earlier said he was in favor of "weapons of mass instruction" which is clearly not a homeschooling position.

I also think it is disengenous for Huckabee to say he is for a quick win in Iraq, and then tell small groups that the war in Iraq is a war against Allah. As most candidates, Huckabee does not say what "win" means. His war against a religion may be a clue as to why.

I think Huckabee's management experience is a plus. However, ex-governors as presidents tend to tread the federal government as a state and bloat the budget with things that don't belong in the federal government. This may explain why he supports Fair Tax (which might be OK) without a plan to decrease taxes.

I am a conservative evangelical fundamentalist Christian, yet it bothers me when Huckabee plays into the rhetoric of the militant fringe. He does not have the wisdom of Solomon concerning the Middle East.

I do not have concerns about his views on creation. To me they seem more humble than weak.

On several occasions Huckabee has demonstrated that he has no understanding of economics. This means that as president he will be completely at the whim of advisers on inflation, China, dollar, economy and so on.

Mike Huckabee does provide a nice comfortable chat, a trait that will be handy in a campaign. However, I have to disagree with Farris on communication. After the chat, it is hard to tell what he actually said.

Excellent Mr. Ridge. You understand the math and the political landscape. But let's not sell anyone short. Rep. Paul is also a fighter. My bet is that Gov. Romney will be the last person standing but the others will not go silently into the night. These are all terrific Republicans and they deserve everyone's respect. Let's keep our eyes on the prize.

In November 2008, a Mitt Romney victory is a victory for the entire country and a major defeat for extremism and religious fundamentalism everywhere.

A wave of political change began in the 100 degree heat in a small community in Iowa and in a small measure mirrors the military surge that began in Iraq. Americans love success and are angered by defeatists and defeatism. The party of Harry Reid is just beginning to understand that.

Let's face it, Ron Paul is the 1976 Ronald Reagan of this race.
The rest of the field is simply jockeying for the role of Gerald Ford.
Hillary beats them all, except Paul!

I am glad that the two message candidates, Paul and Tancredo, look to have done well enough to go on, and three mainstream bores(though all good men, seemingly)will probably drop out. I hope the eventual nominee(probably Rudy, but maybe Mitt) will listen and adopt the salient aspects.

Huckabee is chatty and likeable, but it's a sad state of affairs when people are more attracted to the heroism of loosing 100 lbs, than to the heroism of a John McCain. I guess a lot more people can identify with the need to lose a lot of fat than the need to stand up to Viet Cong torturers. (Full disclosure--I've lost 90 lbs and have never even SEEN a viet cong).

It never seems to occur to the MSM that the reason Rudy and McCain (and to a degree, Fred T.) did not compete in Ames is because Mitt had already beat them and they didn't want to face the defeat. So they cut their losses and bailed early. Mitt had the superior organization and ground game in Iowa. He beat them. Face it. The MSM is acting like apolgists for Rudy's & McCain's lack of connecting with the votors, and I'm tired of no one acknowledging that fact.

**********************************************

FlipFlopper Mitt is a FRAUD.

This convictionless empty suite spends millions in Iowa, $300 on makeup, and buys votes and only wins by 31% votes when none of the top 3 candidates were in the field. Even among a field of nobody's this fraud called Mitt can't win convincingly.

I had only heard about buying votes in third world countries and among nations ruled by dictators. But our Mittester will put these nations to shame. Mitt has shown that even in America he can BUY votes. Way to go Mitt.

Mitt can buy votes during straw polls but only a true conservative like Huckabee or Brownback can win on merits. Mitt is a leftist to his core and people will show this fraud the door in primaries.

The flipflopper Mitt is not even a republican and moRomney can't become president of christian US.

Romney's top campaign fund raiser was just indicted for several different counts of fraud on the Wednesday preceding the Straw vote.

It looks like we have even more fraud now...

Romney and the Election Auditor. Conflict of interest? You decide. How much do you think it costs to hire the Ames (Story County Iowa) Election Auditor to join Romney's 'Leadership Committee?' Hmmm?

Demand for a recount of the ballots inside those machines be performed by hand. There is a reason that it took so long to 'fix' the problem with the machines. This is real folks. Do not just lay down. Every conservative and liberal should recognize the importance of transparency. All I want is a little sunlight to shine dark places where the facts are hiding.

After careful and intensive analysis, it is clear that the most intelligent posts here are by Romney supporters. The rock bottom scores go to, well need I even say it? Will all Ron P supporters click their heels together 3 times and say, there's no place like home. Rinse. Repeat.

I have been impressed with Ron Paul's ability to deliver solid soundbites in the debates. I even agree with some of his statements. He's right when he says the Neocon agenda is a miserable failure. But that is where Ron's ability ends. He has good principles, but he has no ability to build consensus, only to rant and bark. His legislative record is indicative of this.

I think Romney understands Paul's position but is able to look at situations at the ground level and the long-term consequences of decisions. Paul does not do this, he is much more willing to make a decision and create chaos in its wake rather than work through situations methodically. For this reason, Paul seems too short fused, as does McCain, and Giuliani for that matter!

Romney is someone who is more willing to think about the consequences of American meddling than most people give him credit for. He is not isolationist, but he is not a neocon either. He'll try and persuade and negotiate and convince, but he won't dictate or try and control. Some people give him the handle of "slick Mitt" because he is so good at this. But "slick" is much more applicable to the Clintonian attempts at coverup and subversion, rather than simply being a good negotiator, consensus builder and businessman.

Those that refuse to see his skills won't be convinced by almost anything. They like who they like and are uninterested in investigating the candidates further. That's fine, but they'll miss out on a Romney candidate that is almost overqualified for the post.

As a Ron Paul supporter, I have naturally been disposed to consider the possibility of shady dealings in this campaign. In fact, I do think something screwy went on with the "failure" of one Diebold machine in the straw poll count. But my interpretation is likely different from most.

The machine that "malfed" handled about 1800 votes. That is simply not enough to shift things from a Ron Paul victory to a Romney victory, without giving away the game (what, Romney gets 90% from this machine?). What it IS enough to accomplish is to get Romney up to the level his handlers deem acceptable for this contest.

OK, that's one take. But there's another. Drawing attention to ONE malfunctioning machine keeps people from paying attention to all the other machines. Face it -- ALL the machines ran on software proven to be vulnerable to hacking -- especially by insiders with access to the equipment. Given that a Romney insider (the elections official) was responsible for this whole shebang, you have to wonder...

Paranoia aside, what I REALLY think is that things were tweaked much more subtlely. The perps used the one acknowledged flawed machine to camouflage adjustments on other machines. They didn't change the results much -- especially Ron Paul's. Yeah, they probably drained a few votes from him, but not enough to make a real difference. They just needed the results to reflect a particular order of success, with Romney at the top -- by far (given his investment in the process).
