Gay Marriage Ban Struck Down In Iowa

30 Aug 2007 04:26 pm

Meet your next issue, presidential candidates.

From the AP:

A Polk County judge on Thursday struck down Iowa’s law banning gay marriage.

The ruling by Judge Robert Hanson concluded that the state’s prohibition on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and he ordered Polk County Recorder Tim Brien to issue marriage licenses to several gay couples.

“It’s a moral victory for equal rights,” said Des Moines lawyer Dennis Johnson, who represented six gay couples who filed suit after they were denied marriage licenses.

Before everything goes ballistic about activist judges and whatnot, let's keep in mind that this is a state judge striking down a state law, and thus has nothing to do with the Presidency, unless Mitt Romney takes the position that the President of the United States has the power to remove state judges from office.

This could really hurt the Guiliani campaign. Do they really want to be talking to Iowa voters about gay rights over the next few months? If this becomes a huge issue in the Republican primary, expect Giuliani's opponents to be able to use Guiliani's past as a supporter of civil unions (not to mention the period he stayed with a gay couple) with much more relevance. This is not going to go away, and Giuliani will have to keep answering questions. Giuliani's moderation on social issues has not hurt him at all for now, but was that just because they had lost some of their urgency in the past few months?
I blog about this more at Campaign Diaries.

Are Romney, Giuliani, Thomson going to take "wide stance" on this issue now? These hypocrites will go to any extent to win. They all are "wide stance" rethugs. We all know that Giuliani even loves to crossdress.
