Huckabee/Brownback Sparring Gets Nastier

02 Aug 2007 04:44 pm

Gov. Mike Huckabee's campaign manager, responding to demands that the Huckabee campaign apologize to Sen. Sam Brownback and disavow a pro-Huckabee, anti-Catholic letter written by an Iowa pastor, wrote this afternoon that it's Brownback who needs to show "Christian character"
and "stop whining."

Courtesy of the Brody File, here's part of Chip Saltsman's broadside:

For Brownback to claim that the Governor "owes him an apology" is nonsense and indicates that if Brownback is going to fall to pieces every time a supporter of the Governor says something he doesn't like, he clearly isn't tough enough to be President.

Brownback's campaign has just responded, again calling on Huckabee to denounce the "bigotry" associated with his supporter.

Here's the full text of their response, which includes an internal e-mail Brownback's national political director sent to Huckabee's campaign manager giving them a heads up that the pro-Huckabee pastor had sent an anti-Catholic e-mail.

DES MOINES - The Brownback for President campaign today made the following statement:

"Last Sunday, the Brownback for President campaign privately contacted the
Huckabee campaign and asked them to intervene and stop this anti-Catholic
whisper campaign," said John Rankin, Iowa communications director of
Brownback for President. "After two days, the Huckabee campaign did not
respond, which left the impression that they would not take action to end
the anti-Catholic whisper campaign by their supporters. While we are all
delighted that Mr. Saltsman is a lifelong Catholic, we deplore the
anti-Catholic whisper campaign being perpetuated by Huckabee supporters. The
Huckabee campaign's response lacked a clear denunciation of the offensive
contents of the email."

"On a further note, the website that Mr. Saltsman refers to--Baptists for
Brownback--is a spoof site with no ties to the Brownback campaign. We are
sorry that this obvious parody was lost on Mr. Saltsman."

"In the final week before the Ames straw poll, Senator Brownback wants to
focus on the issues that Iowa Republicans care about: a winnable solution in
Iraq, scrapping the tax code, restoring the protection of all human life,
defending marriage, and the appointment of strict constructionist judges. We
are saddened that the Huckabee campaign has criticized Senator Brownback for
calling out an anti-Catholic whisper campaign for what it was. The Huckabee
campaign's hysterical response is an effort to distract Iowa conservatives
from Huckabee's record of tax increases, big government and the pardoning of
violent criminals."

Below is the email that Martin Gillespie, national political director of
Brownback for President, sent to Huckabee campaign manager Chip Saltsman two
days before this incident became public.

Chip, earlier this afternoon, this was fwded to us by a key evangelical
pastor in Ames. I don't know if the author is officially aligned with your
campaign in some capacity, but this is disgusting. We've been picking up on
a whisper campaign anecdotally from some of our evangelical supporters.

Can we count on you guys to put an end to this trash on your end?

The only upshot for both of these candidates is that this spat is getting them quite a good amount of publicity before the straw poll.

It has been revealed to me that The Political Pale Horse is a parody blog. A spokesperson for the GOP, who didn’t know about the blog site until told by a reporter, declined to comment.

It appears that online spoofs do cloud political stances. This will be an interesting electoral season.

Huckabee visits Anti-Catholic Church in Texas - More proof he is a Catholic Hater

Huckabee, at Texas church, angers Catholics

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Rising Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee risked his standing with Catholic voters Sunday by courting his evangelical base at the church of a controversial preacher accused of disparaging Catholics.

A visit to Cornerstone, pastor John Hagee's imposing "mega-church" in the Texas city of San Antonio, was fraught with political perils for Huckabee given his efforts to woo conservative Catholics.

Huckabee, a folksy former Arkansas governor and former Baptist preacher, has had a meteoric rise in opinion polls in recent weeks, largely because he has connected with the Republican Party's influential evangelical wing.

This puts him in serious contention with less than two weeks before the Jan. 3 nomination battle in Iowa, which starts the state-by-state process to pick the Republican and Democratic candidates for November's presidential election.

Religion plays a big role in politics in the United States, where levels of belief and church attendance are much higher than in Europe. Evangelicals number around 60 million in the country of 300 million people, while the Catholic population has been put at close to 70 million.

Taking a break from the Iowa campaign trail, Huckabee delivered a Christmas season sermon at Cornerstone about Christ's birth and embraced Hagee, calling him "one of the great Christian leaders of our nation."

Hagee is a fiery preacher best known for his writings on the Middle East, where he reads contemporary events as unfolding Biblical prophecy. He is staunchly pro-Israel, saying that God had made his love for the land and its people clear.

The Catholic League says Hagee is virulently anti-Catholic -- a charge he denies -- and it is getting the word out that Huckabee is rubbing shoulders with an anti-Vatican figure.

Huckabee's campaign insisted his visit to Hagee's church should in no way be taken as a slight to Catholics.

"Three members of the senior leadership of the campaign are Catholic, including our national chairman. Gov. Huckabee is committed to being a leader of all Americans," said Charmaine Yoest, one of his senior advisers.

But other Catholics were angry about the visit.

"Hagee has a history of denigrating the Catholic religion," said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, the largest Catholic civil rights group in the United States.

In his recent book "Jerusalem Countdown," Hagee wrote: "Most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews."

In the same book, Hagee did applaud the late Pope John Paul II's efforts to reach out to Jews.

But Catholic bloggers on the Internet were mostly critical about Huckabee's visit. The Catholic News Agency ran the headline: "Mike Huckabee to speak at strongly anti-Catholic preacher's church."

One Catholic blogger said while Huckabee was an eloquent spokesman for the "culture of life" -- code for the anti-abortion cause -- his visit to "a church pastored by a raving anti-Catholic bigot" was deeply troubling.

At Cornerstone, Huckabee's appearance went down well with the crowd of several thousand worshipers, who frequently interrupted his remarks with loud applause.

"I think he is a good and godly man," said Suzanne Ramirez. But asked whether she planned to vote for Huckabee in the Texas primary in March, Ramirez said she had not made up her mind.

Huckabee said earlier Sunday on the CBS show "Face the Nation" that he was running to be president of the entire United States, not just the Christian community.

"That's how I served as governor," he said. "People look at my record and they didn't see that I put a tent out on the capital grounds and had healing services and I didn't replace the dome with a steeple."
