An aide to Fred Thompson tells me that the campaign has settled on its mantra: Security, Unity and Prosperity. Those words will be emblazoned on the side of a Big Ol' Fred bus that will tour the early primary states next week.

"Fred has officially lost his momentum." I strongly disagree. There is more than a year to go and people are ALREADY sick of the current batch of candidates, on both sides. Now it's Mr. Fred's turn to step in as a breath of fresh air. Come November 2008 it will be Mr. Fred and Rudy vs Al Gore and Hillary. You don't think Al can sit this out, do you?
Because hitting your high point 6 months before the 1st primary seems abit much?
I probably should wait until they unveil the bus, but they'll probably never read this so... I wonder what the heck they were thinking given that the slogan is very close to the name of this effort: spp.gov If you aren't familiar with that highly questionable Bush administration effort, see some of the articles in this search. Maybe Fred is sending a secret message, or maybe he's just clueless.
Mike Huckabee just passed Fred in an Iowa Poll today. Sorry Fred, you just can't bluff your way to the nomination like you wanted! :)
It amazes me how some of you can candidly say things which have no fact to back them up!
You doom and gloomers should get your facts straight. Are you afraid of Fred, or do you just like to poke fun?
Oh yeah, shakin in my boots at the thought of Fred, riding a few folksy sayings and the smell of aqua velva all the way to the presidency. *laughs condescendingly*
Is Thomson going to drive his bus like he drove his pickup truck? What a fake. How about Thompson emblazoning the follwoing on the side of his bus? Lobbyist, Trial Lawyer, Lazy A lazy guy who is a Lobbyist and Trial Lawyer can't give prosperity and security to the country. He simply is a DO-NOTHING old senator from 90's.
Fred is neither a consrvative nor has any leadership qualities. We need Ron Paul and not some Hollywood people to run our country. By the way, he is doing this only because of his wife (yes, the same trophy wife) who wants to be the first lady. She controls the campaign and Fred in and out.
What bugs me about Fred is that he pegs himself as a reformer (i.e. federalism) and an outsider, but his campaign is full of operatives from the past few republican administrations. That, and he has a lackluster Senate record. Can anybody explain to me why four years of Fred would be anything other than business as usual? Thanks
Am I the only one who finds this phrasing a bit 1984-ish?
Am I the only one finding the deluge of Ron Paul trolls wearing thin? The anxiety and fear at the prospect of seeing Fred Thompson side-by-side with the other GOP candidates, with all his rhetorical and acting skills display while Ron Paul waxes desperately and annoyingly nostalgic for the fantasy-time when America minded its own business (never existed) is palpable. Or while Mike Huckabee desperately tries to convince someone, anyone, that he deserves to be anything more than the top of the second tier of GOP candidates. By the end of the year three candidates will have commanding positions: Rudy, Mitt, and Fred. Sorry Senator McCain. Romney has the looks and money, Rudy has the record on 9/11 and (usually) says the right things, and Fred has his personality and apparent love affair with federalism and whatever else he says he loves that alleged real conservatives also allegedly love. Who will win? Personality usually does. Rudy I don't think has the kind of personality that will compete well with Romney's or Thompson's. So I think it will come down to Thompson or Romney, both of whom are the most electable GOP candidates I think. Romney because he's handsome and rich and speaks pretty well, and Thompson because whenever he is on top of his game everyone seems to gush all over him as channelling Reagan.
How will a lazy old man UNIFY the country? Seriously? The Dems could only be so lucky. Fred is the New Bob Dole, without the actual legislative accomplishments.
chaos has it right. Joe, you seem to be under the impression that "actual legislative accomplishments" matter. If that's so, why do governors so often become presidents? The only thing that keeps me from despair over the fact that running for President is just a popularity contest is that the barriers to entry are so high, the truly incompetant cannot get in; Americans love to watch the popular fail, the few incompetants who do get in are destroyed with glee; and the office makes the man, running this country is so complex that advisors and bureaucrats do most of the work.
Doesn't look good, if Fred the best Republicans can do looks like we have Dem as our new command and chief.
The "Frederick of Hollywood" was so lazy and ineffective that during his 6 years in senate he was major sponsorer of only 5 bills. And guess what these bills are. The bills include the naming of a post office and courthouse in Cookeville, Tenn., a private bill that granted permanent residency status to a young Bolivian girl and her family. And for flip-flopper Romney, he is intellectually the most dishonest politician ever. Both "Frederick of Hollywood" or "flip-flopper Romney" will be "Bush version 2.0". Only McCain can provide real change.
Does that means the campaign slogan will be "Whaaat'SUP?" And chaos is right - no one cares about legislative accomplishments. Arguing that is a waste of time and energy.
I personally can't quite call Fred 'lazy' just yet. Sparing me the obnoxiousness of a year and a half of campaigning is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Instead, he's put out some essays and such that articulate his positions. I haven't signed up with Thompson yet, and if he says/does something I consider stupid, I'm gone, but I'm not counting the man out yet.
Whoever owns this site needs to hire some real communist bloggers. Thompsons Campaign slogan
