The Tragedy Of Larry Craig

28 Aug 2007 08:32 am

The easiest available moral judgment one might impose on Sen. Larry Craig is that he is guilty of moral hypocrisy. Yet another Republican, anti-gay, turns out to be, well – he says he is not gay, but ___.

Many observers, and not just the press and the Democrats, will fixate on that one category of harm as if it were the most important. Indeed, the chain of Republican men who seek illicit sex from other men is a curious phenomenon of our time and deserves a bit more examination;

Craig, it has to be noted, now says that he erred in pleading guilty and asserts that his behavior was entirely innocent and, implicitly, non-gay.

The tragedy compounds for:

## family. Assuming Craig did what the police complaint says he did, the deepest tragedy here is private and personal. The perpetrators of these victimless crimes often are unable to reconcile their concern for their family’s well-being with their own impulses. Ted Haggard’s wife. Dina Matos McGreevey. Tia Allen, the daughter of Florida Sen. Bob Allen. Etc.

## His staff. Members of former Rep. Mark Foley’s staff had trouble landing new jobs. Their resumes have stains through no fault of their own. They suffered fairly considerable emotional distress and embarrassment – and Foley never apologized to them.

## Gay Republicans. After the Mark Foley calamity, many are just now regaining their confidence, buoyed by the relative lack of attention the White House candidates are paying to the “issue” of homosexuality.

## Gays, generally. Mark Foley blamed his bordering-on-pederasty behavior on childhood molestation; the allegations against Craig reinforce another stereotype.

## His party. When Bill Clinton liaised with Monica Lewinksy in the White House, it hurt the Democratic Party in ways the party still doesn’t quite comprehend. It remains a subtext of his wife’s presidential bid. Successive Republican sex scandals – and on a national level, most of the recent sex scandals have been Republican – are hurting the Republican Party. Many conservative evangelicals wonder whether the party tolerates, sanctions and even and covers up the sinful behavior of its members in order to win their votes. The National Republican Senatorial Committee now has another seat – potentially – to defend. The 2008 Republican presidential candidates now have another curveball to dodge.

Just as it’s implausible to argue that the scandals somehow exemplify the Republican ethos – a logical absurdity – it’s equally as implausible to argue that they don’t matter at all, and cumulatively, they don’t stand in the public mind as examples of a party torn away from its moorings.

Lets not play games here. After this incidence its crystal clear that Lary Craig is gay (or bisexual) and he was soliciting sex at public places.

The only punishment for jerks like Craig, Vitter, Allen, etc is to force them to vote in favor of gay marriage and gay-rights. Otherwise GOP is party of hypocrites which is worse than dictatorship.

Larry Craig, a married GOP senator, who was trying for sexual encounter with another man in a public loo, is a big supporter of Romney.

Bob Allen, the Florida GOP rep who offered $20 to an undercover cop for oral sex, was the co-chair of McCain campaign.

Ravnel, the guy who was busted for cocaine distribution, was the chairman of Guiliani's South Carolina campaign.

The GOP should be proud of their Family Values candidates and Family Values legislators.

Remember neither Romney nor Guiliani nor McCain condemned their actions. No wonder they support it because they are strong leaders an believe in family values.

Is senator going to resign? There is no way he would be able to explain his "wide stance while using the public toilets" to the voters.

According to Roll Call, the undercover cop was inside one of the stall of airport restroom and then Larry Craig stod outside the cop's stall and watched him through the cracks and then Craig would look down at his hands, ‘fidget’ with his fingers, and then look through the crack into the stall again. Craig repeated this cycle for about two minutes. Craig then entered the stall next to Karsnia’s and placed his roller bag against the front of the stall door.

When Craig entered the adjoining stall according to cop, 'Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area. Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times, and Karsnia noted in his report that “I could ... see Craig had a gold ring on his ring finger as his hand was on my side of the stall divider'.

We have one daring right wing family values Republican senator for sure!

I am really tired of these idiots being idiots. lets here it for term limits.

these guys get so comfortable and arrogant in their positions as legislators that they have too much spare time on their hands to be perverts and they are arrogant enough to think they can get away with it.

I am furious and tired of it! I understand people make mistakes, but when you hold such positions of responsibility, more is requried of you.

this guy and the rest make me sick.

and, to make it partisan, to say republicans do it more than democrats is absurd. we all know both sides have always had this problem. it is just more of a story when republicans do it because they stand for family values where dems don't care.

they don't stand for family values, they just fooling stupid evangelic, as long as they are high above, all those who have to be tortured are normal gay people below, not them.

"Members of former Rep. Mark Foley’s staff had trouble landing new jobs. Their resumes have stains through no fault of their own."

Oh my.

This is apparently becoming an epidemic among the Republican party. Will they have to change their gay platform just to protect their own party members? You have to feel for Sen. Craig (sort of...), but I have no sympathy for the GOP as a whole. They built their entire "pro-family" base on fiction.

http://political-buzz.com/

He was arrested in June.

He pled guilty in early August.

Why is this only becoming news in late August?

Didn't anyone recognize the name in the police blotter, court docket?

While appreciating your thoughtful concern for the private tragedy that is Craig's family's, I am outraged by the tragedy that this man has helped to perpetuate on the GLBT community. While Craig's wife will be assured of health care, pension survivor benefits, and social security survivor benefits, (even if they divorce!) My spouse, who I legally married in MA, is entitled to none of these, due to DOMA, and other discriminatory laws that he championed under the "family values" veil.

Anonymous bathroom sex in not my issue. I don't care! The crime is allowing a repressed hypocrite vote on legislation that has denied full and equal benefits to all Americans.

I feel sorry for him only in that I know what it's like to feel like you have to live a closeted life. But that's where it ends. He's yet another career politician who will say whatever it takes to get elected and re-elected by his constituents. And his hypocrisy is just one more slap in the face to the GLBT population.

And considering his actions, he's either wanting to get out of his closet or he's a complete and utter moron. Crusing public places for sex is just asking (nay- BEGGING) to be caught and outed.

here is a must read article in today\'s The Idaho Statesman. It gives details of all of rumors and allegations swirling around Craig being gay.

It states that Craig engaged in homosexual activity in a bathroom in Washington’s Union Station in 2004. Like the Minnesota airport restroom, the Union Station restroom is known as a place where men can find anonymous sex.

\"I am not gay and I have never been in a restroom in Union Station having sex with anybody,” Craig told the paper earlier this year.

The paper interviewed more than 300 people, combing over military and police records, interviewing Craig’s accusers and even tracking down an ex-girlfriend from Craig’s days at the University of Idaho in the late 1960s (who for the record told the paper she felt like “an accessory” when the two dated).

The Statesman also examined rumors about Craig dating to his college days and his 1982 pre-emptive denial that he had sex with underage congressional pages.

The most serious finding by the Statesman was the report by a professional man with close ties to Republican officials. The 40-year-old man reported having oral sex with Craig at Washington\'s Union Station, probably in 2004. The Statesman also spoke with a man who said Craig made a sexual advance toward him at the University of Idaho in 1967 and a man who said Craig \"cruised\" him for sex in 1994 at the REI store in Boise.

Those who exalt themselves will be humbled! Any chance Dubya's still confused enough about the extent of his political capital that he will lend some to this conflicted man?

RE: Mike's comments...
The actual spelling of Giuliani's disgraced former Chair and former State Treasurer is: RAVENEL.
More importantly, Thomas Ravenel is gay, too. That's just one more thing that his family has
covered-up for a long time. His father recently admitted that they'd known that he'd had a drug problem.
And...our infamous Lieutenant Governor, Andre
Bauer is gay, too..he and Thomas actually have
had a relationship for quite some time.
So to, Glenn McConnell, the State Senate Pro Tem is also a flaming queen,...SOUTH CAROLINA SEEMS TO BE OVERRUN WITH GAY REPUBLICANS IN HIGH OFFICE!

There seem to be many Republican closet homosexuals. One of our Wood County, Wv Commissioners is a well known homosexual preditor of young boys but is protected by his party and uses intimidation to keep from prosecution.

The louder Repiglicans scream about "family values" the more likely it is that they're hiding stacks of gay, S&M, bestiality, swinger or child porn in their basements. The GOP's "ethos" is pure hypocrisy and has been ever since it decided that the path to power was sucking up to the Falwell/Robertson/Dobson crowd. Those types aren't legitimate religious figures, they're freaking carnival hucksters. (In Falwell's unlamented case, he was such.)

SC gay Repubiclans.
What about Lindsay Graham?

Republican or Democrat...it doesn't matter. There are idiots in both parties. If Larry Craig actually smokes the same brand of cigars as Monica Lewinski he brought this on himself and he should deal with it. How is this Romney's fault? I own my own company and I have interviewed and hired people that I thought were good people and in the end had a number of them turn out to be masters in the art of deception. They were great in the interview and impressive! But...I fired them. My poor choice of the employee didn't make me the bad guy, just cost me money and frustration. It did make me a little wiser..... On the side, I don't know who I am voting for, but I will have to say that Mitt Romney appears to have no skeletons in his closet like all the others. I am not sure this matters to main stream Americans anymore. We have become a nation of "self-servers" at the USA Buffet. Enjoy my glass of "whine"!

I am an Idaho conservative and have met Senator Craig and received assistance from the Senator's office on a couple of occasions. He is finished in Idaho. If you plead guilty you are guilty...period. Anyone truly innocent of seeking homosexual sex in a public bathroom would fight tooth and nail to defend his honor. Yes, he's a hypocrite....that being said, suggestions that he should now vote favorably on homosexual marriage, etc. is a leap in logic. The Senator has kept his sexual bent secret for years probably because he views it as a perversion....I couldn't agree more. Now he resides in a personal (and public) hell he created. His family, friends and supporters are the real victims. If he could be stripped of his Senate retirement perks you would have my vote.

Hello Cliff,

I guess you must had received ample ass-istance from Sen. Craig eh?

you sound like another self-loathing loser.

so this guy is humanly weak as many are - and wound up too tight in the public eye. so he resorts to some behavior that he probably would rather do without. so he believes that homosexuality should not be legislated as normal legal relationships. so what. leave the guy alone and tell me what you've done for humanity lately.

Hey Cliff, at least you still got Mike Crap-o.

(Chuckles, chuckles).

This Larry Craig is either brain dead or a moron. He is claiming that its all about he said he said kind of thing and he did not have access to lawyer. The one fact missing here is that he pleaded guilty two months after the incidence occured.

According to Hotline, Roll Call's McArdle was on MSNBC to respond to Craig's statement: "The incident happened on June 11th, and he pled guilty on August 8th. So he had some time to think about this, and he said that he should have had the advice of a lawyer. But 11 days after this incident occurred on June 11th, on the 22nd, according to the police documents again from the airport, he goes back to the airport, to the police office, and said he needs somebody to contact about the incident so that he can give the contact information to his lawyer".

Guys, you forgot few more well known hypocrite rethugs who are supposed to be closeted.

DAVID DRIER, rep from California
KEN MEHLMAN, ex-party chair
LINDSAY GRAHAM, senator
RICK PERRY, texas gov

And everyone knows that Giuliani loves to cross-dress.

Science, bitches!

"According to researchers Henry Adams, Lester Wright Jr., and Bethany Lohr of the psychology department at the University of Georgia, the men in the homophobic group displayed significantly greater increase in penile circumference after the all-male videos, while the nonhomophobic subjects showed dramatically lower arousal levels. They report that 24 percent of the nonhomophobic men, but 54 percent of the subjects who scored high on the homophobia scale showed some degree of tumescence in response to the homosexual video. In addition, 66 percent of the nonhomophobic group showed no significant increases in tumescence after this video, but only 20 percent of the homophobic men failed to display any arousal."

The more anti-gay you act, the more likely you are to be repressing your inner Friend of Dorothy.

I delight in seeing yet another ego maniac hypocrite self destruct in a sordid tale of lies...so glad that officer ignored the veiled threat of Craig throwing down a U.S. Senate card...obvious attempt to simply smooth things over...I do feel sorry for his family and staffers...so many people hurt by this one man's stupidity and hypocrisy...

The apples don't fall far from the Tree. Conservative, religious, Republican, old white men, with strong family values, hanging around each other. What do you think they are doing? This takes networking to the next level.

http://www.blogactive.com/2006/10/senator-larry-craig-whats-with-gay.html

These two clips says 15 Congressmen were "allegedly" involved in a ring page boys doing the nasty.

I am not saying Romney is, but if looks it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it aint a f** mongoose.

“Just as it’s implausible to argue that the scandals somehow exemplify the Republican ethos – a logical absurdity...”

I’m not sure I follow this. It may be politically incorrect, but it seems to me quite plausible.

For years now the Conservative Movement, including Craig, Vitter, Haggard, Foley, et al., has argued that homosexuality was related to short-term, selfish, hedonistic, ultra-individualistic ethics. What better description is there of the worldview of contemporary American conservatives?

The right wing’s argument is grounded in the idea that gays and lesbians don’t raise children; which is true when they are repressed and barred from doing so. Where the liberal ideal of basic human rights prevails, we have now seen that homosexuals live conventional lives of marriage and family (much to the consternation of the right). But in that contrast, perhaps we can see some grain of truth beneath the conservative analysis after all. Perhaps people forced to deny, hide, even loath their nature do tend to focus obsessively on themselves and have little empathy or pity to spare for others. Such alienation would logically lead to the embrace of Conservative ethics on the environment, economic justice, taxation, etc. Live for yourself, today and the hell with the weak, the less fortunate, future generations, etc.

Now that you mention it, double standards and public hypocrisy both seem deeply ingrained in the Conservative Movement’s idea of propriety. The poor and weak and dark must toe the line very carefully, but the rich, powerful, and fair have a right to be left alone.

In fact, the more you think about it, the more Ambinder’s pre-emptive defense of the GOP seems not only absurd, but intellectually shallow.

Why all the hoopla? I thought that being a fa*got was becoming the norm in America. The republican run Justice Dept sure seems intent on advancing their rights. Whats a little BJ among 2 happy guys in the usual homo love nest, the public restroom? Maybe the ra*heads are right. Maybe we do need Sharia Law in America. Can I'm not even one of those Christian nuts).

Larry and other funny tales of hypocrisy on

www.mylifeintheftrain.blogspot.com

Where's the glory hole? I wanna cum.

Where's the gay escort from Talon News to cover a hard-hitting story when you need him?

The god squad likes cock up their collective asses!

There are two tragedies here. First, Larry Craig was a victim of police entrapment for a victimless crime. Second, Larry Craig was a victim of his own self-loathing demons.

Wait a minute! Wait a minute! I think he's about to say, "I'm sure that God has forgiven me." I can hear it coming any minute now....

It might not hurt to bend over backwards to help someone while in public office, however it could be painful to bend over the other way to help someone while in a public stall.

I think nitpicker has presented the real problem for the Republican Party. Clearly, male Republicans are turned on by gay candidates, what other explanation for the large numbers of gay Republican politicians? In addition to those already named, don't forget Spokane's ex-mayor, Jim West.

All you over compensating closet queens in the GOP had better mend your ways, or soon you'll all be outed.

Stop looking over the stall walls and take care of your own business, just don't spill any seed when measuring your tumescence.

Why don't all of these men-loving Republicans just join the Log Cabins and get their kicks at their meetings? Public bathrooms stink.

I can see the "wide stance" thing at a urinal, but why does the guy need a wide stance when sitting down on the, uh, pot?

Dear Senator Larry:

I saw your excellent press briefing this afternoon and I want you to know I was thouroughly convinced. Reasonable folk could not help but be impressed by your manly denial of gaiety. Your sincere words (and your wide stance)will be enough, I think, to quash all doubts except for wild speculations entertained by certain vicious members of the liberal media. I do think it was a little unfortunate that you opened your remarks by thanking everyone for "coming out," but not to worry.....only the cynical and unkind would see anything Freudian about that.

Best wishes. Be fruitful and multiply

Obviously Sen. Craig is guilty of trying to have a sexual liason with an undercover police officer. He signed the guilty plea several times and it specifically stated that the court would not accept his plea if he were NOT guilty. For me the most hypocritcal thing is for him to now say that he is innocent and did nothing wrong. For his voting against same sex marriages, etc. he simply was casting the vote that the people of Idaho supported and expected. I make NO excuses for this man or his conduct. However, I know a lot of people that are married and for whatever reason, have a sexual liason with another man or woman. Does that mean this person should be expected to publically support adultery? Former President Clinton was guilty of his own misconduct. Once he finally admitted his wrong, he didn't get up on national television and say he was supportive of infidelity or adultery. He apologized for this conduct. Instead of voting yes to every piece of gay legislation, Sen. Craig should have the good sense and decency to apologize to his state and family. His conduct was wrong and immoral. He should acknowledge this and I, for one, can understand that all people screw up from time to time. Would I vote to return him to the US Senate? No, however, I would have some sympathy for his human weakness.

Yes, remember Jeff Gannon Guckert of the phony Talon newscorp who stayed for days in the White House even if Bush wasn't there and there was no press conference going on? He was logged in hundreds of times but not logged out. He had a few websites with names like "Military Stud for U", where he was shown in the altogether, proudly strutting his stuff. The love of men by male members of the Republican party appears to go all the way to the top echelons and yes, the outrage is the huge hypocrisy and suffering caused to gay and lesbians who are victimized by these arrogant, law breaking hypocrites.

I guess it's like that old saw that the more one bitches about homosexuality the more likely it is one is homosexual themselves.
Family Values?
Nice...

Slightly off topic, but how is it that so many Atlantic readers can't spell or write grammatically correct sentences? It's like a Miss Teen USA pageant on here.

Pleading guilty means just that. You have admitted to your guilt. I cannot condon Sen. Craig's actions - How incredibly stupid can you be, but his voting record should reflect the main stream of the people of Idaho which to the best of my obsevation it has. He has been a strong supporter of defense and our troops, gun and hunter rights, agriculture, and Idaho water rights. All of these issues are on the front plate of Idaho politics and Craig stays and votes on the majority side of these issues. No Senator or legislator in this state, gay or straight could openly support gay marriage and not face certain recall. I know it sounds incredable but I would vote to re-elect him if the choice were between him and someone who would not vote in line with the main stream of the state.

Thank you for the, apparently, de rigueur comment on grammar, martha. Clearly, proponents of a minority viewpoint must trot it, or some other tangential matter, out when they have nothing to say to advance their positions. You have reinforced my prejudice on this matter.

Come out of the closet, Jerry. Say is strong and long, "We're queer, and we're here!!!!" Don't hide in the shadows.

The Republicans do not have a global corner on the market in sexual scandal (so to speak). The Conservative Party here in Britain, whilst in power, suffered a chain of embarrassments, as has(to a lesser extent, somehow) the Labour Party during their time of majority.

This kind of behaviour is not and will never be "new" for repressed men in power.

And martha, it's hard to spell properly, or even string a sentence together, whilst measuring one's tumescence ...

First time in Chicago in 20 years. Its no longer the windy city, now its the faggy city. Where's Larry Craig when you need him?

Minority opinion? I'm appalled at the lack of literacy on an Atlantic Montly website, and you can't tell I'm a liberal? (Well, I prefer the term lefty; I'm old school.) It's not that tangential. Take a minute to write a clear sentence and it's amazing how much more civil and lucid the debate becomes. Nice use of bold, though. How cool that you speak French.

Conservatism is the last refuge for hypocrites.

"Conservatism is the last refuge for hypocrites."

It's also the last... an Alpha and Omega deal, which should please the Christianist idiots.

Larry Craig is a man out of time. He is clearly more suited for the out and out buttfucking practiced by pols in Roman times. He is simply a man of proud tradition!

there's a point that's missed in Craig's response. his comment that he is NOT gay is incredibly disrespectful! he wasn't arrested for being gay; he was arrested for solicitng sex in a public restroom.

Why are American taxpayers funding cops running around entrapping people in restrooms?

Glad to see these hypocrites outed... but I have to wonder if there is really a public benefit in police time spent on catching these type of "offenders".

I don't recall anyone ever doing the foot tapping thing in a stall next to me before.. but after reading the routine I wouldn't be surprised to know that I had been "approached" this way without ever realising it.

Can't see how that could hurt anyone enough to justify police sting actions.

How was the senator expected to have sex unless there was a hole in the divider of the stall? If that is so, why wasn't the hole fixed? Otherwise if no hole does he crawl undernearth or jump over the top. Please someone fill me in I don't have a clue how this works.

It seems to me that this man threw away a career by not being who/what he truly is, gay. The comment by his constituant (whom the senator helped) proves that being lied to far overrides any positive benefits garnered by his tenure. Sad that he is undone by his own hypocracy.

Minority opinion? (fragment) I'm appalled at the lack of literacy on an Atlantic Montly (sp) website,

I think you are all missing the point here. He did not plead guilty to lewd behavior, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

------------------------------------------
Disorderly Conduct

Almost every state has a disorderly conduct law that makes it a crime to be drunk in public, to "disturb the peace", or to loiter in certain areas. Many types of obnoxious or unruly conduct may fit the definition of disorderly conduct, as such statutes are often used as "catch-all" crimes. Police may use a disorderly conduct charge to keep the peace when a person is behaving in a disruptive manner, but presents no serious public danger.

http://criminal.findlaw.com/crimes/a-z/disorderly_conduct.html
------------------------------------------

The only fact here is that he plead guilty to a disorderly conduct charge. Anything else that is being said about him, including all the gay rumors, have not been substaniated yet. They are just that, rumors, not facts. Yet the majority of posters here are already treating these rumors as facts already.

I am not posting to prove he is innocent or to prove that he is guilty, that is not my point. I just do not want to judge him prematurely, based on nothing but rumors and sensationalized allegations from the media alone.

It truely amazes me how fast people willingly accuse other people of being guilty of a crime, without any real evidence to back it up with. As far as I can see he has been judged and sentenced already, based on rumors alone.

It frightens me to know that you are the same people who would be judging me in a court of law.

This reminds me of a lynch mob in here.

What is it about the Republican Party that is so anti gay??? I mean...it is no secret that the religious right wing of America loves to mix religion with politics and infiltrated the republican party so that Republicans could claim to be paragons of virtue, legislate morality and claim to be God's political party.
But I swear...when I saw the footage of Senator Craig on CNN claiming over and over that he was not gay, I almost thought I was watching an episode of South Park. I thought that this was the voice actor for Mr., now Miss Garrison. I was waiting to hear him follow his denial statements with something outrageous like, "the republican party is God's party & God hates fags & I cannot be gay because I am a republican".
Most Republicans have inner demons in their closets that easily out weigh any of their self righteous complaints and ideological causes against democrats. I'm just curious what inner demons Mann Coulter works feverously to keep hidden in her hate mongering, self righteous, jingoistic closet. What ever it is, I'm sure that it is very angry for being locked up in a right wing extremist as ugly as Mann Coulter.
The problem with the Mann Coulters and Senator Craigs (republicans) of the world is the fact that they usually cannot find anything filthier then their own personal reflection. The only way that they can stand out and make a living is to live a lie and try to seem like something they are not. This usually involves putting others down in order to elevate themselves since they cannot do so on personal merit alone. And when that’s not enough...no problem, they just make up all kinds of malicious lies about democrats and others who do not adhere to their skewed views of reality. Eventually, they always come out and when they do...look out. Let the self loathing begin!

Mark Foley is a Sexual Predator! and the other man from fla is a racist predator. As a gay man these people sicken me please do not equate these people with me I'm proud of who i am and the life i've lived these people hold none of my values. My Partner and i will celebrate 15 yrs in Jan 08 and are continualy amazed at these hatemongers and there pathetic morales and claim i'll be the end of marriage such crap and I no that what they reap there gonna sew big time

MOST Gay Americans are decent, law-abiding, honest, classy, and romantic.

Republicans - I am not prejudiced. I have no problem with you being Gay. BUT, when I am trying to take a piss in the men's room, KEEP YOUR HANDS AND FEET TO YOURSELF.

Larry Craig the Conservative Republican of Idaho is a disgrace to his family. He is an embarrassment to Gay Americans. Do whatever the hell you want in your own damned bathroom.

Larry Craig is not to blame here. His wife is! If the bitch sucked his cock like she should then he would not need to do the homo route. Face it, its easier to get a blowjob from some fag than from some chick anonymously, unless you can get her drunk first. Chicks just need to lower their standards and do the job!

Legalized gay marriage would threaten the "Sexual Outlaw" ethos which contributes to the excitement associated with illicit gay sex. Alas a two-edged sword, as Senator Craig is finding out.

First, I am shocked and appalled at the amount of gay-bashing, outright bigotry, and homophobia expressed here (I'm new). I thought The Atlantic appealed to a more enlightened readership.

Republicans are, by definition, supposed to be at least 100% heterosexual and monogomous in their external lives. If not, then the closet is expected of them in both regards. Woe be unto him who even tries to open the door a crack and let in a little light. Log Cabin Syrup Rethuglicans, as much as I find you all distasteful, where are you after seven years of Bush? Just how much headway have you made?

Democrats, liberals and progressives are more open about human sexuality and human peccadilos (Clinton's included), and are called immoral perverts for their greater appreciation of complexity. Simplistic morality certainly suits an undereducated, or perhaps just an uneducated, segment of the population that the Rethuglicans have captured as their own. Having to hide in order to remain a member of your tribe must take quite a toll, especially if you lack moral courage, or just hate yourself.

Craig has to be a serious dimwit, not because he's interested in having sex with men, which is certainly not something he discovered about himself on his 60th birthday, but in the manner in which he has chosen to pursue it. Public restrooms have long been a venue for anonymous male-male sexual quickies, and Craig is, on the one hand, dating himself to a time when repression and few venues for meeting other interested men existed. On the other hand, looking for adventure at Union Station in D.C. or at the airport in Minneapolis might still be enticing and exciting if it's the only outlet he has, or a measure of how repressed he still is. It's also just plain stupid if you're a US Senator. Ted Haggard was more discreet in his dealings with that Jones fellow, and actually deserved to be outed more than Craig. But both are moral cowards.

Many men are bisexual. Many have families, and often have secret outlets for their needs. Some wives are understanding. Most are not. Puritanism and homophobia, and America's enduring immaturity about human sexuality, creates situations like the entrapment Craig is a victim of.

Consentual male-male sex is not a crime, but can be a nuisance in a public place if uninterested parties are openly solicited or offended by having to refuse an offer. Hetero sex in public is also a nuisance and offensive to some, but somehow the playing field is not level. Would the police mount a sting operation to trap someone into having anonymous hetero sex in a quiet corner of an airport or train station? Would two people, hetero or same sex, having anonymous sex in the toilet of a plane in mid-flight (the mile-high club) be subjected to a sting operation?

I'm sorry for the distress this is causing Craig's family etc, but it is inevitable if you choose to hide yourself from those closest to you, are in the public eye, and can't keep it in your pants.

1. Cruising and/or sex in a public restroom open to children is not a victimless crime.

2. Craig's formulation that "I'm not gay, I don't do these sort of things" implies the reverse: gay people do do these sort of things. That's highly insulting to me and my partner of 15 years, and I have yet to see anyone in the media call him on it.

One thing I still don't get -- how is it you can get busted for playing footsy with the guy in the next stall? Is there a statute in Minnesota (or Michigan or wherever the hell it happened) that says moving your foot in a certain manner in a public restroom is lewd behavior or that it amounts to solicitation of sex?

I also find it amusing that the young cop is so outraged that someone might be lying to him. Oh, heaven forfend -- someone actually lied to a policeman. Oh - my - god.

"Many conservative evangelicals wonder whether the party tolerates, sanctions and even and covers up the sinful behavior of its members in order to win their votes." Should not "sinful" have been offset with quotation marks?
