The White House Clashes With Hillary Clinton

14 Aug 2007 02:56 pm

Remember, a critical -- perhaps the critical -- distinction Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign wants Democratic primary voters to draw is between her "competence" and President Bush's brand.

It's imperative that the White House plays along. Today, for the first time this cycle, the White House responded to a Democratic television ad -- Clinton's.

Q Dana, do you want to respond to a new ad that Senator Clinton is running in Iowa, in which he claims and charges that people without health care coverage are invisible to this President, and that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are invisible to this President>

MS. PERINO: Well, this is going to be tricky going into the campaign season, when people start running ads, because as tempted as I am to take that head on, I think I will refer to the RNC for the specific -- for answers on the politics of it. But as to the merits of it, I think it's outrageous. This is a President who, first and foremost, has helped millions of seniors across the country have access to prescription drugs at a much lower cost. That system that the President put in -- helped put in place, with the help of both sides of Congress, Republicans and Democrats, Medicare Part D, is helping millions of people, and working better than anyone would have expected. In addition to that, the President has tried to take on the issue at the root cause of it, and tried to change our health care system so that we actually are helping provide less expensive but still great quality care to people all over the country.

And as to whether or not our troops are invisible to this President, I think that that is absurd, and that is unconscionable that a member of Congress would say such a thing.

Did you accidentally transcribe Clinton as a "he" in the question, or did the questioner actually say "he"?

I mean, seriously...between this and the Pentagon flap a few weeks ago, could the Bush team give the Clinton camp any more beautifully wrapped presents? You can't tell me they don't understand the dynamic in a Democratic primary. They all got a secret deal going on the side? Conspiracy Theorists of the World, Unite!

rashomon - no great conspiracy. Republicans know the only shot they seem to have at winning the White House in 2008 is for Clinton to be the Democratic nomination.

This will explain why America dont need Clinton...and her negative and divisive politics...this fight with Bush will favor Obama...as he is the true candidate for change... America doesn’t need oldies like the Clintons and Bushes…this is a change election and Clinton won’t Win…Also, her negative politics explains Clinton high negative in the poll…Team Clinton will do anything to seek out controversy…the other time it was with the pentangon, then Obama and now with Bush…she is trying to fool everyone to believe that she speaks for the party when we all know that she is only protecting her interest…rather than telling voters what she will do to solve the Health care problem…which she failed to solve in the 1990’s…now she is blaming Bush…Also, it is the same Bush who she agreed with to invade Iraq…simply put she will do anmything to attain power…but sooner or later the truth will catch up with her…remember Karl Rove who she is following his political play book…

I'm not a Hillary fan, but her ad was a restrained and accurate comment about the Bush presidency.

Word to Hillary Bush ain't running in 20008 unless he is channeling Guiliani's brain. Bush is a has been, lame duck, nobody cares what he thinks anymore. We are bored with Bush, now move on to Guiliani or somebody who is actually running for president.

White House seems to be playing some sort of bait and switch. It appears they are setting Clinton up in hopes that she can get the nomination because she is the only Democratic nominee they can beat. I believe that is yesterday's story, and I believe they know it. There does not appear, as of yet, to be a candidate on either side that has appeared so consistently "Presidential" as has Clinton. I think these guys are running scared.
