CHICAGO -- The AFL-CIO executive committee meets tomorrow to decide whether to proceed with its coveted presidential endorsement.
Conversations with labor union presidents and political directors here suggest that there just isn't a consensus. Many unions are impressed with John Edwards but are wary of endorsing against Hillary Clinton, the candidate they consider the most likely nominee. With the exception of a few Illinois unions and unions in the rival Change to Win, Obama is a non-factor here.
Two thirds of the affiliated unions (as represented by the board members of the AFL-CIO) are needed for an endorsement.
Tomorrow, the executive council will probably decide to postpone its decision until Wednesday -- after Tuesday night's forum. And on Wednesday, it's possible that they'll ratify the lack of consensus and free member unions to endorse on their own.
