Ban Smoking Everywhere? Obama, HRC Say No; Everyone Else Yes

26 Sep 2007 10:22 pm

HRC: "We banned it in New York City..." and "business increased.." I "think that we should be moving toward a bill that I have supported to regulate tobacco.." . She's not in favor of a national law to ban smoking in all public places.

Obama: "Local communities are making enormous strides and they're making progress.." But if local laws don't work, "then I would" favor a national law.

Richardson, Gravel, Kucinich, Biden and Dodd would endorse a national law banning smoking.

There should be a national ban on smoking in public places. I'm sure that this will come sooner or later. Within two or three years there will likely be very few areas where non-smokers are not protected from the proven health problems that come from inhaling second hand tobacco smoke.

Paul, one thing is the health issues, but what about the comfort issues? At a bus stop shelter, when the rain is pouring down, when I stand there with my little son, and some guy fires up a cigarette, it's not health issues that bother me.

I wonder how it came to be that it's socially unacceptable to say "Please put that out" in such a situation.

Still, the more that can be decided on local levels, the better. I'm with Obama on this one.

We're going to need all the smokers we can get. In order to pay for increased S-CHIP coverage, including people who make up to $82,000 a year, Congress is raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes 61 cents. However, the revenue from current smokers is not enough to fund the program at its higher cost. We Iowans who quit when our tax was raised $1 a pack will have to start smoking again to fund this insurance for "the poor".

A smoke free bar is a lot like Christian rock-- completely at odds with the original purpose. A bar is a den of vice and sin. Rock and Roll is the devil's music. We need to keep it that way.

Paul,

SHS has never been proven to cause any illness whatsoever. This has never been about anyone's health. This is about how we've become a society of petty tyrants who refuse to tolerate any freedoms we don't like.

You guys are a bunch of pussy lungs and are forgetting the reai issue.

personal rights.

if i want a cigarette in a bar I have as much right to have one as I do to not have one.
