Obama's Campaign Adds A Consigliere

20 Sep 2007 10:15 pm

When I interviewed her in June, Valerie Jarrett, who will join Barack Obama's campaign as an part-time senior adviser, told me that, by the late fall, she would be, more or less, working on her best friend's behalf on a day-to-day basis.

Jarrett, a former deputy chief of staff to Chicago mayor Richard Daley, has known the Obama family for more than a decade. She runs Habitat LLC, a Chicago real estate company, and may one day run for mayor. A lifelong Chicagoan, she will be the campaign's outsider-in-chief, complementing the bevy of seasoned political insiders who now run Obama's campaign.

Obama advisers insisted that Jarrett's expanded role should not be read as a sign that Obama has lost confidence in campaign director David Plouffe.

But it's also true that Obama and his wife Michelle decided to bring Jarrett inside the campaign a little earlier than some in Obama's world had anticipated. The Obamas were responding to suggestions from friends outside the campaign who thought the campaign could use a firmer managerial hand.

One Democrat close to Obama said that the candidate agreed that the "nuts and bolts" of the campaign needed to be "tightened." But the Democrat said that Obama had "complete confidence" in Plouffe as a planner and a strategist and was worried that press accounts of any change would falsely incorporate the assumption that Plouffe was somehow being demoted.

The demands on Plouffe's time are extensive; donors and major political figures line up to meet with him, and the addition of high-level talent -- staffers and friends who have stature and the ear of Obama -- will allow Plouffe more time to run the campaign.

Plouffe is among the newer members of Obama's inner circle. He has hiring and firing authority and oversees the campaign's budget along with Marty Nesbitt, a Chicago entrepeneur who is also Obama's best friend. Nesbitt serves as campaign treasurer.

Jarrett will serve as a consigliere of sorts who can mediate disputes between senior staff members and make sure that major projects are completed to Obama’s standards. She will be, for a campaign dealing with challenging questions about race, its most influential African American.

Another change: strategist Steve Hildebrand will take a more aggressive role in running the campaign's political and field departments. Hildebrand put together those departments, wrote most of the campaign's field plan, and divides his time between the campaign's Chicago headquarters and its field offices in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

For a major presidential campaign, Obama's inner circle has been relatively free of the acrimony that generally results from the combination of healthy egos and high-pressure decisions. David Axelrod has been the chief strategist, responsible for crafting Obama's campaign argument. Robert Gibbs is the guardian of Obama's image. Pete Rouse, Obama's Senate chief of staff, is a veteran of Capitol Hill politics.

Why this is shocking! He's had months to put together his campaign and yet he's still looking for someone to bring it all together? Could this mean that he has no real executive leadership? Perhaps his wife is running the show. She has been front and center so maybe she's running the whole show? Maybe he's to lazy to run it himself because I've heard that he wasn't too energenic and I've seen him on TV on his down times.
Some insiders say that the campaign is falling apart. He peaked too soon.
Oh well, he was just a fraud anyway.

This is about Fred Thompson, right?

thatcher is howard wolfson

You must be from the mother of all Washington corrupt Hillary fraud Dems candidate. I will let you know that I am a good Dems but if she wins for sure I will vote against her ... Viva Republican! Got it?????????

I never thought I'd day this but "The Devil is a liar."

There is a reason why Obama is always looking up...
you will not be able to stop nor deceive him or the People.

This makes perfect sense to me. Valerie Jarrett is terrific and so is Steve Hildebrand. Foks this is a huge campaign and it has not peaked in any way. It is just expanding and needs the next set of absolutely fantastic organizing. It is still astonishing to me that the MSM does not understand that this is a PROCESS campaign by a fantastic organizer and intellect who actually makes tweeks and changes when it is appropriate. This campaign is not like other campaigns--it is an authentic movement.

Obama doesn't fit into the narrative that the traditional media has designed. As a result, they taint or put a negative spin on anything he says or does because he refuses to play to the old system and strategies. We will all be different when his campaign is over because he consistently strives for the highest standards.

The Jarrett having a high-profile role is not surprising although I'm surprised they felt the need to announce it. Same goes for Hildebrand. Why announce this? Are they trying to mollify restless and concerned donors?

Axelrod (Obama's Narrator as he's been called) has used the same game plan that he used for the governor of my state, Massachusetts. Both Deval Patrick and Barack Obama have been branded as "authentic" Both good men (although Patrick has had more experience) The course of his term as Governor so far does not bode well for an Obama Presidency. Although well meaning-Patrick has made one mistake after another- He said all the right things (and probably believes them) during the election process but had a major learning curve- and this is only for a governship- check it out- these are facts- Day one the whole world will be watching- Firey evangelical rhetoric is swell but it only gets you so far-

There is nothing going on here but normal growth. When a company expands, they hire new people, creat new job titles. The Obama campaign is growing in leaps and bounds and they simply need to bring in more people to deal with it. Don't fret.

I watched part of the debate on PBS last night. I am curious as to why Obama was not there. Does anyone know?

who will be hanging on Obama's coat tail when he moves into the White House. Opra, Jackson , Sharpton, NAABP......God bless them...

Obama wants to keep his myth alive. The less he shows up at uncomfortable situation , and just talks the talk on gatherings without follow up of questions, the more the mystique.

Why did I mistakenly think there would be educated, intellectual discussion in this comments thread?

He opted out of the debate to do a Countdown to Change forum in Atlanta. He announced a few weeks ago that he was going to cut-down on his schedule to focus on other states. Some think it was a mistake to miss the pandering session (I mean debate), given the turnout rate amongst seniors in Iowa. Hope that helps.

"thatcher is howard wolfson"

Howard Wolfson is Darth Vader.

Of course the media would headline it, "Campaign Shakeup?" What shakeup? Where? I wouldn't call this a shakeup, I'd call it 'Campaign Growth?' Edwards and the rest of 'em having campaign folks dropping like flies, walking out, etc. is a "shakeup" so why doesn't the media give those campaigns the same disgustingly negative headline? But you don't. This is great Obama campaign news, growth with greats is always good news, and for Obama, it is just getting better and better, regardless of how the media tries to turn him on his head. OBAMA'08!!!

But the Democrat said that Obama had "complete confidence" in Plouffe as a planner and a strategist and was worried that press accounts of any change would falsely incorporate the assumption that Plouffe was somehow being demoted.

i really don't care about any negative views that people would have about barack obama, but the reality is that we cannot run from the truth for so long.obama appears to be the best presidential candidate ever that this country had in more than a 100 years.i have so much good things to say about obama but i cannot say it here.folks, just remember that barack is the real product of the future and most important he is the greatest because he represent the real america:white and black ,so i believe that he is the real symbol of unity.

America must change now, america needs a president who can bring hope back and also who can give a new direction to this country.i remember few years ago back to my country where i was born in cameroon central africa, people used to give a lot of respect to america.things have change now, america have lost all the respect, and we need to get that respect back, and for that we need someone like barack obama,a men full of talent, energy, ambitions, courage.a men who is the real symbol of unity,a men who can restore confidence, health care,a men who can try to talk not just to our friends ,but also to our ennemies.we need today to use a different approach of politics and barack is the godfather of this new politic.when hillary is talking about obama's lack of experience,i believe that is very unrealistic of her saying some thing like that about obama.i`am so proud of obama and so excited to see that men in the white house.i`am so confident that barack is the next president of the united states.the succes in iowa is a good sign, and this is just the begining!!!!!!!
