Romney and Obama Cross Paths

03 Sep 2007 01:59 pm

MILFORD -- After a devastating flood last April, Milford needed a boost, and the Labor Day parade here, one of the oldest in the country, did the trick. There was Barack Obama and his moving rope line greeting students. Mitt Romney pausing to shake hands with firefighters. Chris Dodd holding his beautiful young daughter.

This is a Republican town; no other Republican had a presence here, except for a pair of signing-waving Guiliani backers and a truckload of veterans for McCain. This day, it seems as if his GOP rivals were yielding New Hampshire to him.

Romney, cheerful, suntanned, dressed in a polo shirt, came prepared with a few sound bites for the reporters. At a brief press conference,he teased Ex-Sen. Fred Thompson, who has decided to announce his presidential candidacy one day after an important debate here.

"I guess the only comment I'd make to Fred Thompson is, 'Why the Hurry?' Why not take a little longer to think this over? From my standpoint, if he wants to take 'till January and February, that's ideal."

Romney noted that the rest of the Republican field "would have had five debates without him."

Of this Wednesday's debate, which Thompson will skip, Romney said: "I think it will boost the ratings for the Jay Leno show, but I'd rather be doing well in New Hampshire."

He also tweaked Sen. Hillary Clinton, whose speech yesterday made the newspapers here for her assertion that she'd bring change to the country.

"I have no doubt in my mind that she would do her best to change America, but she would not take us in the direction that would lead to a strong America," he said. "Hillary Clinton: she'd bring change, it would be a sharp left turn..."

Done with the press, Romney walked about 20 yards to his east. There, Barack Obama was greeting a small crowd of wellwishers, mostly high school and college kids wearing "Department of Peace" tee-shirts. A Secret Service agent guarding Obama's rear tried to stop the phalanx consisting of Romney, several camera crews and Romney aides from slipping right behind Obama, but it was to no avail. Romney stuck his head in the camera shot and gave Obama a big "Hello, Senator!" Obama seemed mildly amused. "Well, let's wait until we debate," he said.

Romney jaunted off.

CNN's Candy Crowley asked Obama what he thinks he should do differently to jar Hillary Clinton out of her seeming lead in the state and nationally. (Note: Obama's campaign would dispute the premise). "People know me in terms of my name, but you get a sense that I sort of popped on the scene two years ago, instead of knowing my track record, working as a civil rights lawyer, as a community organizer and a state legislator," he said. "What we're doing is describing to the American people my background, why I think I can bring something new to the American political scene, why it's so important for us not to just change parties in the this election but to change politics in Washington."

I would like to see those two facing off for the presidency. Obama is so charismatic and Romney is so competent.

It would be a good contest.

PS Thompson should have stayed on the couch eating potato chips.

Romney is a true flip-flopper. He's changed his stance on everything. Senator Obama would wipe the floor with him in debates.

Senator Obama is charismatic but speaks in terms of marshmallow fluff. His policy arguments can be summarized in a single sentence, and he has very few accomplishments to show how he qualifies for President.

To be fair, speaking in terms of fluff is what quite a few of the Republicans are doing (none to the extent of Obama, save Fred Thompson), as well. With one noteable exception being Romney.

Anyone claiming that Obama would wipe the floor with Romney in a debate 1) hasn't compared their policy statements (of which Romney's is far more detailed) and 2) hasn't seen Romney speak on the cuff.

At the very least, it would be a turn-around from the last few presidential elections which featured a far-from-eloquent George Bush, a wooden, shifty Al Gore, and a pretentious moron in Kerry.

Debates are often Obama's weakness, and often Romney's strength. I like both men, but that Obama wiping the floor comment seems delusional. Why not talk about what Obama's strengths really are? Both men raise the bar for Primary candidates and I'm glad they're there. Personally, I think it will end up between Edwards and Romney.

Marc, you're on-and-behind-the-scene reporting is consistently the most insightful, picturesque, and interesting stuff on the whole internets.

What the hell are you doing on this obscure blog?

The only way Obama can compete with Romney in a debate is if he is hooked up with his wife feeding him lines... Romney says some bonehead things, but they pale in comparison to those of Obama... If Romney backed Fair Tax, he'd be a sure winner... Peace everyone!

Huckabee For President!

Romney For Treasury Secretary!

I agree with ClubbieTim . I'm for Obama, but I respect Romney's accomplishments in business, the nonprofic sector, and government. They are the freshest, most original faces in their respective parties, and I think a face-off between them would be a lot more constructive than, say Hillary v. Giuliani, bashing each other with the same old ideological battering rams.

Hey, everybody, the issue is socialism vs. capitalism. As I see it, socialism was responsible for quite a few million deaths in wars and political persecution over the last century while reducing everyone's standard of living. Capitalism seems to always thrive on peace, and has given us heretofore unimaginable increases in standard of living. How could Obama ever win a debate with Romney?

Of course Edwards would be worse. Here's an interesting article:
http://miraclesdaily.blogspot.com/2007/09/john-edwards-runs-for-socialist.html

Mitt Romney would dominate Barak Hussein Obama, Jr. in a debate. Barak Hussein Obama's inexperienced, empty soundbyte rhetoric speaks only in vague platitudes.

Only the committed hard left, ignorant sheeple who honestly think that an airhead quote-unquote "rockstar" who was never thus characterized until the media decided to give Democrats an option to Hillary Rodham Clinton, would make a good President. Sadly, Barak Hussein Obama, Jr. has insinuated that he would invite enemy islamofascists into the white house, while bombing and invading our allies.

Then I suppose there would be those who really, really, really want to see Barak Hussein Obama, Jr. as the first black president, regardless of his islamic madrassa indoctrination, inexperience, ultra-leftist policies, or the fact that even 24's David Palmer puts him to serious shame.

And let's not forget that Barak Hussein Obama, Jr. had an islamic father from Kenya, that he attended an Islamic Madrassa in Jakarta, Indonesia (home to Al-Quaeda affiliate Abu Sayyaf), and that Barak Hussein Obama, Jr. had, by the age of ten, studied the Koran and an unknown number of violent islamic Hadiths for nearly half of his life.

What we don't know is which, if not all, violent Hadiths he was indoctrinated with. We don't know how much of the Koran he memorized. We just don't know what he really believes. The office of the President of the United States is no place for a Jakarta Madrassa-indoctrinated "former" muslim who claims to now be Christian. The islamofascists will either celebrate that one of their own is in the white house, or kill him for "converting" from Islam.

PS: I agree that Freddie should have stayed on the couch eating potato chips.

law & order

You know I noticed that when people use Senator Obama's middle name they are attempting to imply something that isn't even there. Your ignorance and hate is a reflection of the Party you support. Whenever you cannot justify why you don't like something or someone, you "hate-filled" neocons spew hatred and lies to try to win your argument. If you don't like a particular candidate why don't you state it intelligently. I could state something that is fact-based on the Mormon religion, but I won't because I think you've spread enough hate already.

Does Obama seem to speak like Captain Kirk to anyone else...in slow but sharp, 3-4 syllable phrases, followed by a long quick one?

I can't respect a candidate that I know I'm smarter than. Romney, Clinton, Giuliani, Biden...those are the only respectable candidates out there, intellectually speaking.

And all those pushing the socialist agenda...add them to the dumb-nuts category. Socialism is for lazy politicians that don't have the creativity nor energy to actually fix problems...just to hide them in the bureaucracy of Washington. Surprised that Fred isn't one.

ST from JC:
And we're supposed to take your ad hominem and red herrings as support for what? Your sweeping generalizations are not only untrue, but terribly unsound and completely juvenile. Moreover, what does Mormonism have to do with the discussion (I daresay you'd prove but an ignoramus on the issue...if you're lucky)? Obama's middle name IS Hussein, so I don't understand how that is hate-filled, nor a lie. On the contrary, your strawman is typical of left-wing hyperbole and irresponsible polemic. Before spouting ridiculousness, why don't you try the old maxim: Grow up.

'Law&Order' is a JEW ! That's all we need to know.

Mitt Romney is a joke and will say anything to get elected. As far as debates go barack obama is leaps and bounds better than mitt witt. Remember Romney attacked Obama for age appropriate sex for children. Well go ole' mitt supported the same stance while governor. The information is out there you just have to do your research. What about Romney holding the osama/obama/chelsea's moma sign. mitt's response "lighten up. I don't read the signs I hold." Obama may not be god's gift but he answers directly from his heart. Romney is good for sound bites and comedy i.e. dr.strangelove. Honestly i don't see why anyone would vote for the GOP for prez since they controlled all executive branches of gov for the past 7 yrs. Wouldn't voting for republican prez continue the path we are currently on since the major GOP candidates STILL support Bush's policies.

Gov. Romney never supported sex education for kindergarteners.

Ron, you obviously don't know what you're talking about so I don't know why anyone would take you seriously. Romney never supported sex education for kindergartners, and Romney wasn't the one holding the "Osama, Obama, and Chelsea's Momma" sign, and that's not what he said.

Romney is an extremely intelligent person (graduated with a joint degree in law and business from Harvard, cum laude), an excellent public speaker, and is honest enough to admit where he's been wrong.

Sounds like a good candidate to me.

Obama`s socalled experience does not resonate with mainstream Americans.
If Obama`s people must be delusional if they do not believe that Hillary is the front runner.
Lack of experience is not an asset.
Johnson`s experience as majority leader helped pass medicare and Civil Rights legislation. And his lack of foreign affairs experience got us into Vietnam.

This debate between Romney and Obama is slightly interesting but I would have to agree with the majority here that Romney would win due to several factors....

First off, Romney is much better of a speaker and a thinker.

Second, he is correct on the issues while Obama has to defend socialism, large government, higher taxes, denigration of the family unit, illegal immigration, and the list goes on and on.

Third, Obama has NO RECORD while Romney's is very impressive. Which politician has the leadership qualifications as Romney does? He has done everything with the right motives and everything he touches results in success. He refused his rightful salary as Governor of Mass. and turning around the Olympics for exactly 0.00 dollars. There is a starch difference between the "rock star" and the "leader".

Obama v Mitt certainly would be a good debate, but it will never get to that. I think both are the freshest to come from their respective parties, but I doubt either make it to the general election. Romney's got a better shot out of the two because of his unprecedented organization skills (sure would like to see that in our next president), but Obama is going to get eaten alive by the Clinton machine. I forget what Nixon used to call his opponents, rat-somethings, but that's probably tame compared to what the Clintons think of their nemisis and right now, more than Edwards or anyone else, that's Obama.

On the Republican side, Guliania and Thompson strike me as being old and lazy. Not in a really bad way, because I think their both men of accomplishment, but not as energized as Romney. John McCain has the shutzpa, but he's also old and I think most people think of him as too angry.

If Biden had run 8 years ago, he would have done well in the general election, but he's getting old now too, and has really shown himself as more political, at least more of a political animal than I think the public perceived in 2000. If Edwards can keep his number up, but avoid taking the lead (and thus the Clinton barbs) until the last, he'd probably be the dark horse of the democratic race and fare pretty well.

In the general election, it's going to be a close race. This country is pretty divided. Someone said it's a challenge between socialism and capitalism, but it's also a battle over Americas role in the world. The democrats are apeasers and capitulators and at least believe that they can improve their power base by weakening America. Hopefully, whether it's Obama, Clinton, or Edwards in the general election, they'll drift back to center, so that on the chance that one of them is the president elect, the country doesn't go to hell in a hand basket.

I wish the Republican congress wasn't so damn corrupt, because a democratic president with a republican majority in both houses is a pretty nice working arrangement and might actually preserve America's dominance and strength, both military and economic. With a total lapse of character by congressional republicans, I think we would be better off with a Republican president and a democratic congress if we could somehow preserve the balance.

Is Mitt's attitude really what we want in a president? He seemes awfully naive downplaying Thompson and toying with Obama. And then there are the flip-flop's...

http://political-buzz.com/

In reality Romney is a pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights liberal. He is a fake republican. No real republican should believe this flip-flopper. He may blow with the wind once again if gets elected. He is the real danger to republican party than Hillary. This phony Romney thinks that he can buy presidency with money forgetting all of hos flip-flops.

Who won the close encounter between
Obama and Romney?

From the article.

"Romney stuck his head in the camera shot and gave Obama a big "Hello, Senator!" Obama seemed mildly amused. "Well, let's wait until we debate," he said.

Romney jaunted off."

I believe Obama won.
He responded to Romney's juvenille stunt
with a touch of class.

Joseph Antley incorrectly stated:

"Romney never supported sex education for kindergartners, and Romney wasn't the one holding the "Osama, Obama, and Chelsea's Momma" sign, and that's not what he said."

Joseph, here is a picture of Romney holding the sign.

Mr. Unite Us:

While you're divying up who won and lost the great confrontation between Romney and Obama...Did it ever occur to you that Gov. Romney just walked over to say "hi"?

For people that thinks Roomney would beat Obama, think again, it ain't gonna happen. Based on what i have seen so far, Roomney is nothing but a coporate guy who can't inspire a generation of American but Obama can.

However, i must say he is the best hope of the Republican. If he run against Clinton, he might win but not against Obama.

I guess none of you have seen Senator Obama in one on one discussions or debates, otherwise you wouldn't be so quick to proclaim Romney the Jordan to his Ehlo.

I also think Obama did pretty good in the last debate, even with the moderator making it a bash obama fest.

Barack Hussein Obama will be the next POTUS. Get mad.

I think most predictions of anyone wiping the floor with another during debates usually end up being pretty wrong. The debate formats ensure a rough tie, with supporters of each declaring victory.

Sometimes little things set one apart from the other. Al Gore's weird walking over behind Bush probably gave Bush that debate win.

Sometimes a good quip - usually prepared by the campaign staff and rarely ad libbed by the candidate - carries the debate. "You're no JFK" comes to mind.

Every once in a while, a candidate will come up with a response to a situation on his own instincts, but those "I paid for this microphone" moments are rare.

Wow! People still think Mitt is a "flip-flopper." Tell me, why has he not changed positions on his religion since it has caused him more challenges then any of the other issues have? Could it be that he really is sincere in his change? Could it be that he is truely "open-minded?" Now, there is a novel concept for you bloggers in reference to Mitt Romney. How many of you consider yourselves "open-minded?" Or have stopped learning and become "flip-floppers" yourselves?

I also think it would be an incredible debate to see Obama and Romney, but it probably won't happen. Clinton will destroy Obama, but we'll see about Romney. I think he can hold his own weight. And, he's got the financial support, public speaking abilities, and political history to keep him afloat. This will be a good election.

Oh, and about the whole "Who won with Obama and Romney" thing, HA! It seemed to me like a friendly cross that didn't prove anything. We'll see how far everyone takes it though.

I think Obama is taking politics waaaaaay tooooooooo personally... All Romney did was say hello to the man... The classy thing to do would have been to reply in kind... But according to the text, i seems like he took offense to what Romney has been saying these past few months. Obama needs to get thicker skin, or he will self destruct before the primary's... All he really has is his wife, and Oprah.

Romney and Obama are the two smartest candidates out there. It would be awesome to watch them fight it out.
