The Rest Of The Stories, 9/26

Rudy Giuliani fires his deputy campaign finance director, Anne Dunsmore, a few days before the end of the quarter. That suggests he'll lag behind ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney in fundraising. It also reflects the fact that Giuliani still has no natural fundraising base and never developed one.

Sen. Larry Craig will not resign on 9/30.

As we first reported last week, John McCain will launch his first television and radio ad blitz... in New Hampshire.

Will Newt run? Watch Rich Galen. He's a senior adviser to Fred Thompson. He is also one of Newt Gingrich's closest friends. It's probably true that Galen would not have signed on with Fred Thompson had he expected Gingrich to run.

Fred Thompson plans a three-day swing through Iowa next week.

It's better to be hated than liked, especially when you start a presidential campaign, Chuck Todd writes.

My guess is McCain will cede his votes and support to Fred, putting Fred way ahead. I also thinik Gingrich wants a job. A high position. McCain may want VP. It's not natural that either of these men do not see the possibility of light at the end of the tunnel for them, and most likely from Fred Thompson.

Fred is going to be our next President and he has plenty of choices for some strong administration folks.

Oh, Don. You sweet nutjob.

What-ever you're smoking, I want some. Twice.

Idiot... just like your candidate!

Thompson has largely dropped the ball on Amnesty and meaningful border control. Gingrich may step in and link up with an outspoken border control guy like Duncan Hunter. The power of the opinion against Amnesty and wide open borders was demonstrated by the quashing on the "DREAM ACT" by angry citizens from both the Republicans and independents, but no thanks to the silent Thompson. Blue collar America doesn't buy the Amnesty line that Hillary, Dick Durban, and Kennedy are pitching. Over time, this will become a political "third rail" issue.By mid '08, it will be poison to noty want a fence, or granting 20+ million a vote. This sea change will be a national kill-shot, if Hillary or Giuliani take charge, Hunter is a rock solid conservative and a credible guy. Thompson has been trying to be as nebulous and generic as possible, he is certainly coming off that way. Motherhood, Federalism, Unity...B.S! Too bad, if he had pushed the line a little on domestic border security he might have moved up above 35% in the polls by now, but it seems it is not to be. Gingrich & Hunter, or, as a fall back
Romney & Hunter may take the place of the "stillborn" Thompson bid...So very sad!
