Thompson Opens Smoothly, Soberly

06 Sep 2007 05:26 pm

DES MOINES -- Fred Thompson’s official campaign kick-off was high-tech, low-key and well-produced. His speech, a sober disquisition on the country’s perilous times in the context of Thompson’s own record, was certainly not purchased from the deli. He threw out only a few slabs of red meat if only to inoculate himself against complaints that he wasn’t proud to identify himself as a Republican.

Mostly, he inveighed against Washington.

“One of the arguments against term limits … is that is look all the expertise that you’d lose,” he said. “Is it lack of expertise that we’re lacking or is it lack of will to do the right thing? I think it’s the lack of will. And politicians kick the can down the road.”

“My friends, we need to deliver a message to Washington that we’re better than that and we need to start delivering that message by electing a president who will blow the whistle on that lack of accountability, and I’m the guy who will do that.”

Barack Obama couldn’t have written better pox-on-the-Beltway lines, and Thompson, even more than Obama, sounds like an outsider. But Thompson was a Washington lobbyist who lives inside the Beltway. It is not clear, as of yet, how many Republicans know this or whether, when they do, will reject his message as a simulacrum.

It may turn out to be a blessing that Thompson got rid of the Washington consultants who managed (or mismanaged) the first phase of his coming out as a candidate.

Though there is plenty of foment among the professional and elite class of the Democratic Party for a change message, no Republican except for John McCain is running to reform and reverse the moral failings of his party. And in that context, it’s hard to discern a thematic difference between McCain and Thompson. They seem to hold an identical position on the war on terror and Iraq – the campaign believes that national security debates will dominate the rest of the primaries and the general election.

“I am a man who loves his country, who is concerned about our future and knows that in the next years, it’s going to require strong leadership,” Thompson said. “We must show the determination that we are going to be United as the American people and do whatever is necessary to prevail not only in Iraq but in the worldwide conflict that lies beyond Iraq.”

Indeed, it’s not hard to see why Thompson and McCain were (are?) close friends, collaborated together on legislation (campaign finance), and even pat their audience on the back the same way: They share a worldview.

So we go back to first principles: what distinguishes Fred Thompson from John McCain and the other Republicans?

“From what I hear, he stands for the right positions on military and on the moral issues,” said one attendee, Wayne Murrow, a long-time caucus goer from Colfax, Iowa. “ For each of the others, there’s been at least one thing I don’t care for.”

A reporter asked whether Murrow knew about Thompson’s integral role in writing the McCain-Fein gold campaign finance legislation.

Mr. Murrow, who is distantly related to Edward R., didn’t know what McCain-Feingold was, and in any event, did not seem to care.

“He reminds me a lot of Ronald Reagan,” Allie Vicker, a thirty-something, from Des Moines.

Maggie Cradd, who attended the event with her 11-month-old daughter Campbell, did not mind Thompson’s elongated testing-the-waters phase and did not chalk it up to dawdling. “He waited and made a calculated decision to enter the race,” she said. “That’s what a leader does.”

Brian Lokesitch of Des Moines sported a Thompson sticker but said he was uncommitted. “All of the Republicans say the same things,” he said. “For me, it’s about attitude.”

From these conversations and others, two differences emerge. The first is that Thompson has less of a history running against his own party. And second – that old devil again – he just sounds a hell of a lot more presidential. He fits the archetype of a president. Even in his slimmer, Kelsey-Grammerish incarnation, he looks a president. All of this is cliché – so clichéd that you might wonder why it bears repeating. It bears repeating because it’s undeniable asset to Thompson, one that will open so many doors to him, one that will allow him to paper over discrepant parts of his resume.

“We have a candidate who needs a special type of campaign, “ Bill Lacy, Thompson’s campaign manager, told me. “So what we’ve tried to do is structure the campaign so it is built around his unique strengths, and those are that he is a genuine conservative, small town values, and that’s why we wanted to go with the video announcement on the website. And third, we’ve got a lot a lot of grassroots supports that we need to take advantage of.”

With the Iowa caucuses four months away, I wondered whether Thompson had enough time to build a harness for that energy and the general discontent within the Republican electorate.

Absolutely, adviser Rich Galen told me. Mitt Romney, he noted, barely breaks thirty percent in the polls. True – but candidates don’t generally win with majorities, either.

At most, “we’re maybe a couple of months behind,” acknowledges Robert Haus, Thompson’s Iowa state director. Still he was confident that Thompson would recruit plenty of precinct captains available who know the ins and outs of Iowa Republican audiences. The poo-bahs at campaign headquarters, he said, had given him free range to make Thompson’s campaign as “broad and as deep as we can make it.” That means a mix of retail politics events, town hall meetings and traditional stump speeches. Haus later shared a laugh with Dave Kochel, a veteran Iowa Republican strategist who works for Mitt Romney. Kochel was there to check things out, nothing more.

He probably did not come away too alarmed. Thompson’s advance team managed to fill the room, claiming to have signed in 450 supporters. (The consensus among the press corps was that about 200 people showed up – still impressive for the middle of a workday.) Make-work campaign posters dotted the walls. The highlight was the staging. Three mammoth projection screens were set in a vaguely Hellenistic, egg-shell colored-frame. There were no hitches. One woman fainted. The event started on time. Thompson worked the rope-line. The buses loaded up. And off he went.

Fred needs to make a better impression than the video. Skipping the debate was a mistake. Maybe he's even lost NH already.

WOW!!! We finaly got a man who walks the walk and talks the talk
RUN FRED RUN!! GO FRED GO!!

Mr. Thompson is well poised to make inroads with many voters. I too liked the fact that he entered later into the race. It does show he is a calculating man who shows that important decisions of this magnitude requie a patient approach, and if and when you swing in, you do it in a way to further differentiate yourself from the pack. I'll wait to hear more about his positions, and if I like what I hear, he will be my #1 chioce of candidate.

I'm not aware that he has any ties to the to the oil cartel. That would put him #1 in my book.

Fred has always had federalist values and I don't see him changing now. States rights and smaller government to name a few.

GO FRED GO

Am I missing something? Can someone tell me in 200 words or less what qualifies Fred to be a president? I don't even think he looks presidential, he looks old and bald to me. He's never run anything either, what's the big deal?
D

I'll wait to see with whom he surounds himself with. As we have seen in the last 8 years a President is as good as those around him.

in response to daconblue comment, does every canidate for President have to come out of the Senate cookie cutter mold. Just look back in History. Nixon, Ford, Carter, Regan, Bush SR, Clinton, Bush Jr. Three past presidents were either Congressmen and or Senators. Four of them were Governors. Out of the Seven ,4 of them had two terms.
It seems as of late, the last 20 odd years, the same people seem to run every election time. Don't you think we need some NEW BLOOD in the OVAL OFFICE. MR. Thompson shows a very diverse backround, in and out of Washington. He has CORE VALUES, something most of our leaders in both parties LACK!!!
Let's give the man a chance to speak and show what he is made of and I don't believe that entering the race at a stage will hurt him on the contrary I think it will him if he doesn't fall on his sword workerdave

You are willing to paper over Fred's failings b/c he "looks a President"? Naw, it's because he's a Republican who "looks a President." You don't or would never show similar loose standards for Obama or even Edwards. At all.

So biased and loverly. Yuck.

YUCK.

To all of the other pygmy candidates: Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid... The silent majority has finally been blessed with a candidate they can truly SUPPORT.

Knock 'em Dead, Fred!!

Let's have a look at this utterly meaningless rhetoric:
“We must show the determination that we are going to be United as the American people and do whatever is necessary to prevail not only in Iraq but in the worldwide conflict that lies beyond Iraq.”

Show whom? Is the point to "show" something or actually accomplish things? Who is our audience? Wait... Are we talking about TV here or real life?

How do we "prevail" in Iraq or in a war against a tactic (terrorism) or a state of being (terror)? What do these victories look like? Are you guys totally incapable of admitting that the Global War on Terror is indeed a bumpersticker slogan? Can we please grow up and admit that the best way to deal with small bands of well-hidden Jihadists is police work and small-scale military action? Must we continue with the big swinging dick strategy?

And do you have anything to offer in the way of strategy, or are you simply advocating that we 'do whatever it takes" and "refuse to fail" and all that hooey? Is that all you've got? How about some IDEAS? No? Nothing?

Fred Thompson is as fake as the TV show he appears on. Remember the old red truck and the hick presona he created to become a senator. God, haven't we had enough of these showboating arrogant jerks.

Discuss Fred Thompson at the best Fred Thompson Forum on the net!

Fred Thompson Forum

Being a middle of the road constituent, and given the choices of Edwards, Obama, Clinton, McCain, Huckabee and Giuliani, Fred Thompson looks like a breath of fresh air, which seems to only come around every 20 or 30 years to clean out the closet, and let’s face it, our political closet is in dire need of total restructuring, not just cleaning. So when bob stated: "Remember the old red truck and the hick presona (sp) he created to become a senator. God, haven't we had enough of these showboating arrogant jerks." I am reminded of all the Limousines and Staged Speeches, accents added and removed, swagger upon entry, and all the other staged antics that the politicians employ, and then how refreshing it is, to see a non-career politician like Fred Thompson finally bring a more palatable offering to the real citizens of the United States.

A good point was made in tinisoli’s blog, where he stated: "Can we please grow up and admit that the best way to deal with small bands of well-hidden Jihadists is police work and small-scale military action?" But I am very concerned about just pulling out and creating the vacuum in Iraq that will be filled by the only natural enemy they really have, Iran. We’ve been down that road before, in Viet Nam, where the politicians screwed the pooch to the point, that we had little other choice but to call it a bust...

"...is as fake as..."

They're all fake - otherwise we wouldn't vote for them.

"...he just sounds a hell of a lot more presidential"

I don't know what you're seeing. I'm seeing a cranky old man and unlike Reagan, he has a mean streak to his humor.

I don't think he's going to wear well as we get to know him better.

Finally ... someone with interest and perspective and (at-least a perceived) accessibility. I belive he is deeply, genuinely commited to state's rights. I am a constitutionalist. I like the direct, black and white approach of that wonderful document. I think Fred does too. I will be watching closely.

I think Fred Thompson can win. Who do you think will win the Republican nomination? Thompson, Giuliani, Romney, maybe Ron Paul? Vote today at http://www.pollicious.com

Enough of the same old rhetoric!!! Give Fred a chance to compete with the "Old Time Politicians that will say anything to get elected" Does it matter that person "look presidential" or is it the message that he sends to the people. Right now, most of the announced candidates in either the Democratic or Republican Party have baggage or the "Same Old Approach". Give Fred a fair chance and them make up your mind!!!!

"...a breath of fresh air..."
"...a non-career politician..."

Huh?
I am still bewildered by the notion that Fred Thompson's years in the Senate and as a lobbyist somehow weren’t nauseatingly similar to the standard resumé material of countless career politicians. Does television work negate one's work in DC? How’s it work, exactly? Does one season on “Law & Order” wipe a year in the Senate off your record? Fascinating...

I think it’s a sign that there isn’t much to this candidate that he is actively (and cynically) choosing to do exactly what everyone thought he’d do: impersonate Ronald Reagan and hope that conservative voters ache for his reincarnation. If he had any real ideas he’d be denying the Reagan comparisons and doing all he could to show that he’s not just an actor playing another actor. But he doesn’t, and he’s not. Pathetic.

Checkout how popular the Corporate Lobbyist Fred is:

A handful of Utah "Fredheads" - political activists supporting the late entry of Republican Fred Thompson into the presidential sweepstakes - gathered Thursday in Salt Lake City to kick off their campaign for the oldest fresh face in the race.

Just four Thompson supporters showed up at Utah Republican Party headquarters for the event, leaving dozens of untouched cookies and vegetable snacks provided in hopes a much bigger crowd would materialize.

For a while, I thought that Thompson avoiding jumping into race was a good move since it allowed him to avoid being attacked by his opponents for a few months. However, it seems he hasn't done a very good job fund-raising. Although some people on my political forum disagree, I think that he is not really inspiring when he talks. He lacks charisma. He might even be like John Kerry as far as humor and charisma are concerned. He seems rather serious.

He may lack the money to really compete with Giuliani, who I think is his real challenger for the nomination.
