Why Did Edwards Do This? Pros and Cons

27 Sep 2007 05:09 pm

Advisers to Sen. John Edwards argued that the decision to opt in to the public finance system will boost the campaign's coffers before the primaries, but conceded that the campaign's fundraising to date had not met their expectations.

"Before we did this," one adviser said, "there were only two campaigns [Obama's and Clinton's] who thought they'd be around before the primaries with about $20M or $30M on hand. Now, we're going to be right there with them. We're going to have between $18M and $21M on hand now. That'll give us a huge boost."

"The bigger implication here is that there are now three campaigns with major wherewithall going into the primaries," the aide said.

But entering federal financing system has two major drawbacks. There's an overall spending limit for the primaries, so a campaign that blows through its money would be bankrupt until after its convention, allowing the opposing party's candidate to air television ads without rebuttal. (As Edwards adviser-then-Dean-manager Joe Trippi said in 2003: "This campaign believes that any Democratic campaign that opted into the matching-funds system has given up on the general election.”).

And the candidates are severely constrained in what they can spend in the states. There are fairly strict caps in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

An Edwards aide said that the campaign had run the numbers and concluded that they have yet to exceed spending limits. The arcane and fairly complicated allocation laws will help: if Edwards's campaign runs a television ad in Davenport, since 70% of the audience for that ad is in next-door Illinois, 70% of the cost of the ad will count towards Illinois's limit, and not Iowa's. And even for the Iowa portion, the campaign is require to allocate 50% to the limit.

Another loophole: some organizing expenses do not count towards the cap, and the Edwards campaign will claim that most of their Iowa staff expenses to date have been related to field organizing and fundraising.

"We will 100% abide by the rules and the spending limits that come with this," Trippi said today.

Trippi offered a preview of how Edwards will sell the decision in Iowa and other states.

"Iowa gets to choose between a Democrat who is taking the money of health care lobbyists and insurance lobbyists and corporate lobbyists and PACs who will almost certainly blow through the spending limits that they would have to abide by under public financing against a Democrat who has never taken a dime of PAC money and has never taken a dime of lobbyists money, and now, will stay within the public financing system in Iowa, which will give the people of Iowa the change to decide who will go to Washington and represent them on all these issues?"

Spin another Dem lie! EXACTLY why I made America's only CONSERVATIVE MUSIC CD called Hating America First! Edwards, Hillary, Ward UnChurchill and the Sean Penn crowd get their due--in music! Someone had to do it...

"Before we did this there were only two campaigns..." This sounds like the 2 Americas deal....so inspiring!

Exactly why I made my CONSERVATIVE MUSIC CD called Blaming America First! Edwards, Hillary and the Sean Penn crowd always do--so I give them their due--to music! Someone had to!

Ah. Take the federal funds, then quit before you spend them all. I wonder how much of this $ will be paid as "management/consulting fees" to a family member. Yeah he's studying about poverty, and he don't want any! FAKE PHONY FRAUD

"Iowa gets to choose between a Democrat who is taking the money of health care lobbyists and insurance lobbyists and corporate lobbyists and PACs"

And then there is Obama, who has raised more money than anyone (with the MOST DONORS) without taking money from lobbyists or PACs.

Let Hillary and Edwards duke it out...while Obama wins the nomination.

If batman did not have his ears would he be powerless?

John Edwards should know there are really 2 Americas because to him there are 2 truths- the real truth and the next story he spins about his rationale.
Isn't this just like a liberal?

Dont use your own money when you can ask someone else to pick up the tab and clean up the mess!

This is yet another politico, who wants to fleece
the American public. He lives the "high life", but wants the same 'double standard' for the rest of us. He did seem to 'take a few long overdue swipes at Hillary, which most don't want to do, even though she has a lot of skeltons in her closet. I think Hillary/Bill are two "power/
money Mongers who would say and do ANYTHING TO TRY TO RETURN TO THE WHITEHOUSE, AND, they would pander to anyone who would 'feed their personal coffers-criminals or otherwise', as they have NO SHAME at all. They have in the past, sullied the
Whitehouse with their deceit and lies, and they are both 'POLITICAL WHORES'.

Why? His campaign is running out of money. He has no choice. He's not going to make it to the IA caucuses unless he takes public financing. The other option--self financing--wouldn't fit in with the populist campaign theme.

Work the phones some more, Marc.

John Edwards is the man! He is showing leadership on almost every single issue. It takes guts to do this.

And as far as rethugs are concerned they are scared sh*t in their pants of Edwards and thats why rethug sycophants like Lance still believe that Mitts and Rudys are going to save their as*es this time. LOL.

Joe, last six years have proven that republicans are the WHORES in literal sense. They are political whores and real whores who lie and send our kids to die in fraudulent war.

BTW, you guys have heroes in Vitters, Larry Craigs, Delays and Bushies of this world.

Even a moron will prefer 8 years of Clinton to last 6 years.

So you don't like Bush because he knows what he stands for and acts accordingly? So you line up behind these fools who don't have a moral compass at all, and go where they think we want them!
EXACTLY why I made the one-of-a-kind MUSIC CD called Blaming America First. They live off their carping like ticks. Hear those thoughts to music at www.conservativemusiconline.com

Hey Kate...I have been around long enough to know that Edwards will continue to poll at about 12%
Enjoy being in that margin....its is lower than Bush's ratings. For the creep that made fun of the
gay senator....you sound as homophobic as Edwards. Hypocrits I eat for breakfast on my album at www.conservativemusiconline.com

Bush bashers playbook: memorize neocon, thugs, lie, Halliburton..that's it.

Hillary voted for war based on the same intel Bill used to bomb Iraq for WMD (its the second song on my album and he is there with his own words). Hillary voted for the war supplement. Hillary voted for the Patriot Act. She voted for eavesdropping. She voted for the surge. All she does is disagree with her own votes. Dems lap it up because 'Dems Betraeus.'

I say it in music--www.conservativemusiconline.com

Someone had to do it!

It's a gamble. Might win some voters who admire JRE's decision to reject private cash.

http://www.political-buzz.com/

It's perfectly in keeping with the anti-lobbyist theme that Edwards has been whacking Hillary with in the last few months.

I am a freshman-year student at Bob Jones University and my professors say that Democrats are responsible for September 11. My professor told us the REAL story about Democrats and their hatred of Christianity and their love for Islam, the evil religion of heretics. And how Bill Clinton allowed 911 to happen because he was too busy raping women instead of paying attention to our nations enemies like Iraq.

If it wasn't for President Bush and Republicans, we would all be speaking Muslim now and bowing down to the Soviet communist flag. I love America, unlike liberals, and it means I will vote Republican.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
911 NEVER FORGET!

It makes perfectly good sense for John Edwards to accept public money. It puts him on more equal footing with Hillary's campaign, which hopefully will shift the main stream media's endless reporting about fundraising numbers to coverage of the issues. (I know, but I can hope.)

Fundraising is one of those issues that make John Edwards stand out. Unlike Hillary or Obama, we know who he works for - us. While it's nice that Obama has opted not to take lobbyist/PAC money while running for president, while running for the Senate, starting with his run in 2004, he collected over $1 million from lobbyists and PACs. John Edwards, on the other hand, has never accepted money from those sources during his public career. When asked about it at a townhall meeting in Reno, Nevada he said he realizes there are both good and bad PACs but that he believed it was just better to stay away from them altogether. And then there's Hillary, who felt the need to remind us that lobbyists are people too.

One of the reasons behind public funding is to make it possible for qualified people to run for office without having to resort to whoring themselves to private interests. While the dollar figures might not be considered newsworthy if everyone stuck to public funding, it's a necessary step towards campaign finance reform.

Kudos to John Edwards.

"a Democrat who has never taken a dime of PAC money and has never taken a dime of lobbyists money"

But now he's taking my money. Not "taking", like "accepting", but "taking" like "stealing". And I don't really want him to have it.

Jason:

Clinton was not President on 9/11.

Where was your savior Bush then?

Listening to a children's story.

Rather than get an early start soaking taxpayers, Edwards should commit to spend $1 of his personal FORTUNE for every $1 contributed to his campaign.

Has anyone else noticed the contrast between Joe Trippi in 2007 and Joe Trippi in 2003? (Check out my analysis here, on CampaignDiaries.com). I think that pretty much sums up the contradictions of the Edwards campaign.

Lastly 'fore I go:

Basic Point: John Edwards had to recently admit he didn't feel 'comfortable' with gays. Now I am a straight, conservative police officer, and I think I knew at birth tht gay people were no different. This guy has been taking their money, representing them, and had the fear of 'homosexuals' ticking inside of him like a cheap haircut. In other words...he isn't normal...he can't relate...he is out of touch. As I say in song #10 on my CONSERVATIVE music CD, " I can channel his dying campaign." Check the tunes:
www.conservativemusiconline.com

Multi-millionaire John Edwards' acccepting of public funds from the taxpayer is expected. The defense of his parasitic action is expected.

He is a Liberal. He is above the law that otherwise governs all.

"It's perfectly in keeping with the anti-lobbyist theme that Edwards has been whacking Hillary with in the last few months."

How can you spin this with any shred of intellectual honesty? If Edwards was raising more money he wouldn't be taking federal matching funds, simple as that. Taking public financing will also hurt him significantly in the general election. Everyone knows all of this. His decision has nothing to do with principles.

It will take more than money for John Edwards to be able to compete with Ms. Clinton or Mr. Obama. Of all the turds in the race for the Democratic nomination, Edwards will not be the one who floats to the top.

STICK A FORK IN HIM! HE IS DONE!

EDWARDS IS A PHONY JERK, A EMPTY SUIT. HE FLEECED DOCTORS AND MADE BILLIONS AND NOW HE WANTS TAX DOLLARS TO IMPOSE HIS SOCIALISM ON YOU. I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL HE FALLS OFF THE MAP.

He's not getting the VP nod again. He's in this to win or to despoil.

So is Hillary, by the way. Who, more than anyone, is a fried turkey if she loses the race, finished in politics.

So, I think this makes a lot of sense for the Edwards campaign. I just wish it didn't have to end like this for his once formidable campaign.

He could have just self-financed. There's no shame in loaning your campaign a few million and is in no way hypocritical. Why not simply loan yourself $3 million and blanket the iowa airwaves from now until January?

If you remember, John Kerry mortgaged his Beacon Hill mansion a few months before iowa and this influx of cash is widely credited with allowing kerry to run the ads and field operation to win that race.

On the other hand, Edwards acceptance of public financing in 2003 was the only reason he was able to compete in that election as well. Of course, he wasn't up against anyone quite as formidable as Clinton or Obama.

Question: Does acceptance of public financing bar Edwards from self-funding in the future?

P.S. Has anyone noticed a correlation among Trippi's hiring and the campaign's stagnation? Coincidence?

Looks like Edwards is going the way of John McCain: toward irrelevance. It was fun while it lasted. Only one more man stands in the way of Hillary being the Democratic nominee.

It's kind of sad that I knew for a certainty, just by reading some of the above comments, that Drudge must have linked to this post.

Oh jeez, I'm a straight white police officer too, as was my Dad. Maybe because we're Okies and know a bit about getting kicked around we're smart enough to know that a cop or any other working man who touts "conservative values" is just a shill for some rich guy.

The sad thing about the Edwards story is that originally public financing was intended to create a fair and level playing field. And it worked for awhile. Blame Dean, Kerry, and GWB for busting the system all to Hell. Now for the Edwards campaign opting-in is a virtual admission of failure. Unfortunately even if a good Dem like Richardson, or Edwards, or Obama (or an honest Republican like McCain or Paul) ends up in the White House we're still left with a system bought and paid for by liars in $1000 suits.

To poor Jason at Bob Jones... Transfer. There are plenty of good Christian conservative colleges that don't employ obvious idiots as faculty members. I don't know what's worse, a Liberal idiot academic or a Conservative idiot academic, but neither one furthers anybody's education. Islam, for all of its many current flaws saved Western Civilzation (with the help of the Irish of course) during the Dark Ages. Or maybe your instructors think it would have been a good thing if we'd forgotten about math, and science, and medicine. It's incredible how much extremist Christianity has in common with the Taliban..

Jason from Bob Jones,

I urge you to apply some critical thinking skills to what your professor has told you. If they don't teach critical thinking at Bob Jones you should seriously consider transferring. No offense dude, but your comments make you sound like an idiot.

JackM, I like your general line of thinking except your impression that Edwards is opting out. Although I am a displaced Sooner living in the Great Pacific Northwest, I believe the folks up here at least have their political thinking caps on right in comparison to some of those crazy Senators in Oklahoma like Imhoff. Although I'm concerned about Congressman Baird's change of position on Iraq.

Hey Lance, the Dems are just now starting to play the same game (using the Pubes playbook) that Republicans have have been in lock-step (or is it goose-step) with all along...seems many Americans' attention spans are too short to grasp anything else. Otherwise how can you explain the election of Bush with his Swiftboat ads. If Dems had been playing that game in 2004, Bush's drug/alcohol problems and AWOL from Service would have been on the minds of voters instead. Are you going to take your political football and go home now that MoveON.org and a real "Progressive" like John Edwards are on the offensive? I can only hope that the majority of Americans are as excited as I am about the prospect of having all those Republicans with their so called "conservative values" being taken off the playing field and replaced by a Democratic Leader with real compassion, honesty and integrity - but most important a "Brave Heart" in 2008.

Edwards fits the bill (Public financing and all). He has my vote and full support in spite of who the media says are the front-runners.

Most fund raising choices are embarrassing for any candidate. The best spin is often required. All I can say that as an informed voter I can watch a candidate often enough to know who is right on the issues and whose heart, mind, and conscience is right for the Presidency. Life's contradictions do not make a person a liar - for me the overall picture is what's important. John Edwards may not make it all the way, but he is one of the best candidates of this or any time! Put any candidate in the middle of $20 million dollars of campaign money and you will find quetionable transactions. I have been satisfied with how Edwards has answered for his - the haircut and the house have been responded to just fine. He WILL get my vote. For now, it's up to IOWA!

I checked out that conservative music website...

And MAN did it suck.

It's incredible to read these comments! If anyone could consider voteing for a Republican they should lock you up in an insane asylum.King George is a liar and toadie for corporate America.Wake up! Or at least do two things.Don't vote, and use birth control.

Oh the irony. He wants to tax the hell out of the middle and upper class but first he needs our tax dollars to do it.

LISTEN UP, MORONS:

Edwards isn't using tax dollars. He isn't using "your money."

Do any of you conservatives actually prepare your own taxes? Or are you too good to do that yourself?

Anyone that HAS prepared their own taxes knows there's a little check-box that lets you contribute $1 of your REFUND to the Presidential Campaign Fund.

So seriously. Get off it. You're just making yourselves look stupid. It's redundant. We already know you're stupid.

> ..... IS A PHONY JERK, A EMPTY SUIT. HE
> FLEECED DOCTORS AND MADE BILLIONS AND NOW HE
> WANTS TAX DOLLARS TO IMPOSE HIS SOCIALISM ON
> YOU. I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL HE FALLS OFF THE MAP.

Just fill in the blank above with names like Romney, Giuliani, McCain, Thomson and it rhymes perfectly.

Look at gems like Lance, Jason, Sue etc and you will see what American Taliban is all about. Mislead, lie and impose!

"[T]here's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, granted authorization for the upcoming War in Iran, suspended of Habeas Corpus, banned books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, allowed warrant-less wiretapping and refused to investigate 9/11 properly. These are acts of treason.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and make them pay.

This crap about taking money from lobbyists is just that ... crap! He takes money from people who WORK for lobbyists, people who are related to lobbyists, HUGE amounts of money from BIG LAW, etc, etc, etc. He's a phony and everyone but 12% of the country knows it.

Jason,

By stating that we all would be "speaking Muslim" your entire post loses credibility.

Bush cut the FBI's funding for the department that was looking for Bin Laden--pre 9/11!!

Open your eyes: watch the tapes of that day, where three buildings all crumble into dust--at free fall speed.

Challenging government because I pay their salaries,
Jaime

Man... this looks like the worst troll infestation I've ever seen.

Hey Jaime,
He had to cut FBI funding because your boy Clinton reduced the military to nothing during his drawdown of the defense budget. He also created the Department of Homeland Security, which absorbed some of the duties that the FBI covered. He had to fund the new organization. Why don't you stop reading everything the liberal press tells you and challenge them in addition to you "challenging" of the government? Do some research for yourself an stop drinking the kool-aid that moveon.org is giving you.

Why does Lance think that anyone wants to hear his great conservative cd, and by the way is he paying royalties to the artists he is ripping off? No way. As a republican it is his right to steal from other people in the name of convincing us that what he thinks is right, even though he has few actual facts and data that support his "arguments".

It really is sad, the level of self-deceit we see in this country today. People like Lance who passionately believe they are right, even in the face of significant data. They dance around the facts and perform whatever necessary adjustments in their mind to make it come out their way. This is a function of ego, of course. The really truly desperate need to be right. It's this sort of thing that destroys democracies. Only a tolerant state can truly have freedom. But guys like Lance don't want freedom; they want to win. It's all that's really important. If they aren't winning they have no self to refer to.

Yes, trolls. Living under the bridge. Threatening us, our existence, our right to live in "their" country. Should we get them help? Or work to destroy them? I wonder.

I'm an ex-Sooner living in the Bay Area now and I'm a musician and I'd like to personally tell Lance that one plug is enough per board. Two plugs is too much but forgiveable. More than that is just annoying and you're turning people off to your marketing. Good luck though. Your politics sound to me like you have a brain injury but I gotta pull for an indie musician.

Oh yeah, I think Edwards is done for, but I appreciate him taking public financing. I wish they all did.

Lance is one of the fraudulent republicans that Newt is referring to in his following remark:

"Let me be clear. I think Republican consultants are mostly very stupid. I think they have no education. I think they have no sense of history."

-- Newt Gingrich, in an interview with blogtalkradio flagged by Jonathan Martin.

Scott,

Interesting point. But, like I said initially: he did this pre 9/11. The Department of Homeland of Security was constructed post 9/11, predominantly as reaction to the looming threat against America's national security.

Tell me why this department, a relatively informed and effective unit, was left essentially desolved when almost every international intelligence agency was telling the feds of 'Bin Laden's' ambitions.

Interesting point though,
Jaime

Jaime, Where are you getting this info that the budget was cut before 9-11. It was cut AFTER. I would like to see your source. Make sure it is a legit one. I hate it when people put on hippy, liberal garbage like Moveon.org and claim it to be a legit source. Ah, and don't give me Exclusive reports from CBS or NY Time. We all know how good of research they do. Just remember, it was your beloved Bill Clinton that actually had Bin Laden and let him go.

Hey, I see I got some of you riled up...whoa...
First of all, I did post excessively, and the marketing of the CD was over the top. Please accept my apology. I got carried away.

Secondly, while my posts were critical of Edwards, Hillary, et al, they were not critical of you. I was called American taliban (?), a troll, neocon (God is that the sign of an automaton), and more, all for making one cusical CD that is conservative, in a sea of the reverse.

One thing shined through: many of you link conservative with a myriad of evils that run from preachers to Nazis. I can only speak for myself: I am pro a woman's right to choose, pro gay marriage, etc, but I want judical and national security conservatism. The list where I would offend you:

Vote to go to war
Vote for Patriot Act
Vote For Eavesdropping
Vote for War Supplement

Hillary voted yes for all of these, even while she criticizes those very votes. She blames 'Bush lied' on WMD, but her husband hit Iraq in 1998 for WMD and she was on record then, and on the song I noted ( I won't mention the song or CD) she is featured in her own voice saying she has tracked Saddam's WMD over 10 years + and made her decision based on 'her research.') Edwards is heavilly documented during the 1998 bombing and beyond, as well. Of course, he voted affirmatively, as well. Edwards lied about the public campaign funds, and his comments about blacks yesterday were comparable to his 'uncomfortability' around gay men. He is too shallow for me. Sorry.

Anyway, I'll take my lesson on excessive posts--well said, folks. As for some of the rest ( and one clown yesterday called me 'white trash' for owning a VW Bus!) of the comments directed at me, its a long life. Get used to people who have differing viewpoints. Everyone has a few surprises under the hood. Hell, I even have a web site for my vegan lifestyle music CD. I'll pass on promoting it here.....(you're welcome).
