A Weekend Of Iran And Iraq Questions For Hillary Clinton, Courtesy of John Edwards

08 Oct 2007 01:28 pm

Twice this weekend, Sen. Hillary Clinton found herself on the recieving end of tough questions about the Middle East, courtesy of the indirect influence of -- not Barack Obama -- but John Edwards.

First, Randall Rolph, the Iowa Democrat who raised Howard Dean's temperature with intemperate questions in January of 2004, asked Clinton about her vote in favor of Lieberman-Kyl amendment, which decreed that Iran's Revolutionary Guards were a terrorist organization. Rolph told Clinton that, in his opinion, her vote was a step towards giving George W. Bush the authority to use military force against Iran.

On Sunday, per NBC's Athena Jones, Clinton was asked to explain Edwards's accusation that she did not "have any plan to bring the combat troops home."

Here's how the Washington Post covered the first exchange:

"Well, let me thank you for the question, but let me tell you that the premise of the question is wrong and I'll be happy to explain that to you," Clinton began.

She offered a detailed description of the resolution, which she said stressed robust diplomacy that could lead to imposing sanctions against Iran, and then pointedly said to Rolph that her view wasn't in "what you read to me, that somebody obviously sent to you."

"I take exception," Rolph interjected. "This is my own research."

"Well then, let me finish," Clinton responded.

Rolph, from nearby Nashua, fired back that no one had sent him the material.

"Well, then, I apologize. It's just that I've been asked the very same question in three other places," she said.

Clinton then explained that she had gone to the Senate floor in February to state that Bush does not have the authority to use military action against Iran and that she is working on legislation to put that into law. Rolph once again challenged her recent vote, suggesting that it amounted to giving Bush a free hand..

"I'm sorry, sir, it does not," she said, her voice showing her exasperation. "No, no, let me just say one other thing because I respect your research. There was an earlier version that I opposed. It was dramatically changed ... I would never have voted for the first version. The second version ripped out what was considered very bellicose and very threatening language."

And here's Jones on the second:

“Edwards said you do not have any plan to bring the combat troops home,” the man said. “What is your specific plan to bring combat troops home from Iraq if you're elected president?"

Clinton defended herself then sought to show there was common ground on the issue with her opponents.

“My plan is to bring them home and I have said that repeatedly,” Clinton said. “Now the plan has to be one that I put into action once I’m president. We do not know what we're going to inherit. That's the sad fact. We have no idea what's going to be happening in January 2009.”

Clinton said her position was pretty much the position of everybody running for the Democratic nomination.

“Nearly all of us running have said we'll protect our embassy and civilian employees. We'll protect as best we can against Al Qaeda in Iraq,” Clinton said. “You have to have some troops that would engage with Al Qaeda. I believe it will primarily be special operations forces they may actually engage in combat against Al Qaeda, but I've never heard any of my opponents say that they didn't think we had to continue to keep Al Qaeda on the run, so I don't really see that there's any difference.”

John Edwards is a pathetic excuse for two Americas: He is part of the America that uses emotional blackmail to get elected.

In 2004, he recounted his dead son's story to Kerry for the No. 2 spot and said that he never told it to anyone before; that was a lie. (Shrum's book)

Now, he is using his sick wife to attack Hillary and using such plants to attack her on Iran.

Edwards is a wimp who does not believe in the war on terror and thinks it is a bumper sticker. No wonder he wants to leave Iraq ASAP without the implications and is a coward on Iran.

the Queen Warrior better go back to her Bush-style staged campaign events.

everyone in the center left has no idea why Hillary can't say her vote was a mistake nor can anyone understand her granting "cheney's fondest pipe dream" for the Iran war vote..

Here is a little clip of an email I sent to Andrew. It most certainly applies here as well:

Now as far as Hillary goes: She'll be equally corrupt and wrongheaded as the former Cheerleader and his band of merry neocons, just as devious, and she will be just competent enough to keep the ship of state on an even keel. Then in 2017, she can hand off the controls to the next half-bright disaster in waiting.

See it really isn't all that bad, is it?

Come February 6th John Edwards will be on a plane to New Mexico to make a bid for Pete Domenici's seat. Oh my, he wouldn't be that transparently phony, would he?

Edwards is keeping Hillary's feet to the fire on Iraq and Iran. These are tough questions, and if they keep up for the next three months, they'll take a toll on Hillary's "ready to lead" mantra. It's a smart - and necessary - move by Edwards to keep himself in the picture, and he needs to keep hammering away and drawing distinctions. Let Hillary keep trying to hide the fact that there's daylight, however slight, between her and her rivals - as long as she's doing that, she looks defensive and equivocating.

Incidentally, the first comment from "AmericanFor Hillary" is priceless. Speaks for itself, really: a Hillary supporter using Republican talking points.

It's all desperation for Edwards. He knows he's fading fast, so it's time to hit HRC hard.

I think that it's most noteworthy that her first instinct on hearing a lot of questions about her Kyl-Lieberman vote was "someone's out to get me" rather than "this is a real concern of primary voters". At least she apologized. We're still waiting for her to admit her other lapses in judgment.

John Edwards has almost run out of steam. To say his campaign never took off as planned would be an understatement.

Perhaps he should have hired professionals and actually let them strategize for him, instead of letting his wife Elizabeth make all the decisions.

He's a loser. And yes, I'm a Democrat.

John Edwards has become an angry and desperate candidate. He's been wedged in third place since he first announced he was running for President (again).

The latest national poll (IPSOS) has him at nine percent. What next? Two percent?

I'm a 71 year old Democrat who has been waiting a long time for a Democrat candidate who has what it takes to defeat the rightwing. John Edwards ain't it.

Shillary is the GOP's dream , she's the only one who can motivate the right wing base staring at giuliani or romney..

Hillary will help make sure there's 10 more years of a republican congress just like she did in 94

Edwards Schmedwards. I don't care if it was a "plant" or not, it's a perfectly legitimate question, particularly in light of her 2002 vote, and if she'd been asked it already 3 times before you would think she would have perfected her answer, instead of getting increasingly bellicose.

How an elected official deals with dissent - or in this case even questioning - is so important, and so underexamined by the political coverage and the general public. Having to choose between her and Rudy, having to see and hear them everywhere, being stuck with one of them representing us, is going to be wretched.

Hillary has to prove that she's tough, a Better man" than Guiliani. In doing so, she is alienating the progressive wing of the Democratic party...I certainly want to see a lot of daylight between her and the Repug candidate. After giving Bush the go ahead to invade Iraq, she deserves to be dogged for her acquiesance to invade Iran. It is common knowledge that Bush and his War-mongering Vice President will use any leverage to invade Iran; say what you may, she has played right into his hand. How sad and disastrous for this country. Instead, she should publicize his plans and prevent them from happening at all costs. Though forgotten with this miserable bunch, Congress still is the only entity with the power to declare war. Anyone who is feverishly working to that end has my vote. Wake up and smell the scent; a skunk is afoot with no other desperate plan than to invade Iran before the election, again play the fear trump card and scare Americans into voting for another bad-ass disaster for President. So transparent, it's sickening!!!

Why do the lovely members of the "Progressive Taliban" keep repeating the lie that Liebermann/Kyl is a resolution for war with Iran.

Can't you fucking read, you assholes!

Kyl-Lieberman, as passed, must have been seen as a boon by both the Bush administration and by supporting Democrats, including Senator Hillary Clinton. The removal of some of the more drastic language made the amendment palatable to those Democrats and reluctant Republicans who didn't want to appear too hawkish, thus lubricating the amendment's passage. The language concerning the Iranian Revolutionary Guard gave Bush another pretext for attacking Iran should he (rather than Congress) so choose, while providing cover for self-protective Democrats who wished to appear tough on terror. A second winner for Bush is that he can now throw the votes of supporting Democrats back in their faces should he initiate war against Iran and should they dare condemn him for doing so. Especially obscene is the fact that all who voted for Kyl-Lieberman knew from experience or observation exactly what unlawful permission and encouragement President Bush would receive from the language of the amendment.

oh my, rgbtec, you certainly seem furious! You are just the kind of inflammatory person that got us in this mess in the first place. Try some anger management and rational thinking. Disagreement is a right afforded by the Constitution or are you against that also?

How telling. Instead of responding to the story, some have chosen to slime John Edwards. How about a discussion of the merits of the vote on Kyl-Lieberman.

I am amazed that the only resolution our Dem-controlled Congress can pass are ones that renounce MoveOn, or demonize Iran.

How can we pass a resolution telling Iran to stop meddling in Iraq, without even taking note of all the arms that the Saudis have brought in? Or without noting that many of the weapons were those we left ungaurded after the invasion.

While I will support Hillary if she is the nominee, she is way down on my list of preferred candidates. I am thoroughly disgusted at the corporate takeover of both parties.

Too bad Kucinich does not have the funds. I am still holding out hope for a Gore candidacy, but would welcome Edwards as an alternate choice, despite his flaws.

John Edwards is the MOST dispicable of all candidates.

In 2006 a group called ANGLE a gay and lesbian group of successful executives hosted a breakfast for would be candidates.

Edwards showed up, and was surprisingly swishy, I honestly thought he was very effeminate, but whatever, so was Al Gore, but at least Al is more decent.

During a heated question and answer period with the 50 or so gay and lesbians, Edwards called on one guy whom no one recognized.

The man went on to ask about his dead son, and how that had effected him.

Edwards in his most phony performance to date, said something to the effect that ' i don't speak of my dead son in my politics, its just something I don't do.

It was a painful part of my life to lose a child...

It seemed forced and contrived and bizarrely out of place.

Well shock of shock I am watching TV and a few days later he is in IOWA and being asked the same question by guess who, THE EXACT SAME GUY.

That Edwards would plant a question to illicit sympathy about his dead son is the lowest I've seen any politician stoop to ...EVER.

His karma is nasty, and all that is happening should continue to happen to this phony, soul less, opportunist, whom would throw his dead son, cancer striken wife, and whore under the bus any day to get ahead...unfortunately its all coming home to roost.
