FEC Report Highlights: John Edwards

Burn, baby: The campaign had a fairly prodigious burn rate, exceeding 110% of their receipts.

TrippiWire: The campaign raised more than $2.5M online this quarter.

Celebrity donors include: Jean Smart, James Denton, Madeline Stowe, Ron Rifkin, Robin Wright Penn, Sean Penn, Bonnie Raitt, Susan Sarandon, Lars Ulrich, Russell Simmons

According to Ben Smith, Edwards has $12.3m CoH. Add in matching funds, and that should give him somewhere around $22m CoH, no?

I'd say $22m + union support puts him on a competitive level in terms of resources with Obama's $32m and Clinton's $35m for the fight ahead.

What you fail to remember is only a VERY small part of Edwards "$22million" can be spent in Iowa. The guy is wearing handcuffs while riding on a sinking ship...

Iowa is a cheap state for media buys, which is precisely why it gets to go first. Edwards will be able to get his message out in Iowa while staying within the limits.

The point of taking matching funds wasn't to be competitive in Iowa. That was always going to be possible. The point was to be able to run competitive campaigns in NH, NV, and SC at the same time to be able to leverage an Iowa success into the nomination.

And matching funds accomplishes that point.

You just keep thinking we're having an auction in 2008. The rest of us understand we're having an election.

Money is nice, but votes are even better.

The question was never whether Edwards could be competitive in IA/NH; it's whether he could have the funds for 2/3 or for the near seven months between 2/3 and the Convention.

If Joe Lieberman could outraise a Democrat, they'd happily rent themselves out to him.

There's a word for folks who have absolutely no principles other than going home with whoever can shovel them the most dough, y'know.

And have fun with whatever you're doing on 2/3, Adam B. When you get over your hangover, you'll be just in time to watch Edwards pick up 50%+ of the delegates on 2/5.

Then you can spend the next eight years whining about how the American electorate preferred an actual progressive to your high dollar darlings.

Februrary 3 is about when Edwards would get the matching check for funds raised in January.

It's not about having "the most" money, but it is about having enough money to respond to attacks for 6+ months, to pay staff salaries and payroll taxes, to travel, etc.
