Romney, Huckabee Top Values Voters Straw Poll

20 Oct 2007 05:16 pm

By one half of one percent, by 30 votes, ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney won the Family Research Council's straw poll, besting Fred Thompson, whose surrogates attacked Romney with pamphlets, by more than 1,000 votes.

But Huckabee won the majority of votes from activists who attended the FRC's Washington, D.C. briefing this weekend and voted onsite -- 488, or 51%. Note: since 2500 members registered to attend, some of those who saw the candidates in person may have elected to vote online.

About 80 percent of ballots were cast by FRC members online, and Romney's narrow victory comes from those votes.

Huckabee has made a habit of performing well at straw polls like these; there did seem to be a fair number of FairTax supporters, and they may have helped. But Huckabee;'s victory -- without much organizing -- suggests that his powers of persuasion are mighty and that the social conservative activists have come to know who he is and what he's about.

Romney's victory is the latest in a string of positive developments for his campaign's ever-so-careful outreach to evangelicals. He was endorsed by three major evangelical figures this week, two of them hailing from South Carolina. If these indications are a leading edge, his support among evangelicals in South Carolina and Iowa and maybe elsewhere may shoot up.

Ron Paul came in third with 15% of the vote, followed by Thompson with 9.77% of the vote. Rudy Giuliani finished slightly ahead of John McCain, who just can't catch a break with these conservatives. Giuliani received 107 out of the nearly 6,000 votes cast.

Huckabee wields a mighty sword on the podium! He has just crushed the competition and the media doesn't want to report the whole truth!

It's time for those who cannot win to step aside and support the man who can.

Mike Huckabee can win with the endorsement of those conservatives who cannot win. Those such as Brownback, Paul, & Hunter.

I laugh at AlexD. Mike Huckabee can win with the endorsements of those who don't? I think Ron Paul has more of a chance than Huckabee, seeing that Paul raised as much as Huckabee in 3rd Quarter in a week.

He's looking for that sweet VP spot.

Marc, I see Romney sent you its post-poll spin. Both the Baltimore Sun and NRO reported yesterday on Romney sending out email blasts to all their supporters urging them to register as FRC Action members and vote online. Huckabee did not do that.

Among the voters whose votes were in play, and who Romney wanted to convince, Huckabee was the resounding winner.

Well, Joe, Huckabee could have email-blasted all of his online donors and asked them to hit the straw poll.

That would have gotten him two or three more votes, I'm sure.

Why is it that whenever Ron Paul wins a straw poll (online or in person), there is ZERO coverage, but straw poll wins by other candidates ARE covered?

Steve, it's because it's rare for Paul to lose any straw poll. So all those polls must be all rigged. It could not possibly be because of anything Ron Paul has to say though, I am certain of that. /sarcasm

Romney/Huckabee in '08 baby! We can't lose!!

Steve, are you kidding!?!

I think it's newsworthy that Ron Paul LOST an online straw poll. He's won every online/text-msg poll I've ever seen. He even won one of the Dem polls as a write-in candidate a few months ago.

This is obviously a bad sign for the Paul campaign. One can only hope it's because his followers found the idea of giving $1 to the FRC distasteful. That's the way I would spin it anyhow.

Barrack Obama did good, with decimal double digits.

You said:

"besting Fred Thompson, whose surrogates attacked Romney with pamphlets, by more than 1,000 votes."

But these are on-line votes. Fred's people handed out fliers to those people actually attending the event. The thousands that voted on-line were part of the orchestrated campaign by Romney and Huckabee. More so by Romney though.

So you are a bit disingenuous when you state that Fred was bested by a thousand even when his surrogates handed out fliers, right? Is this honest journalism? As if the fliers his surrogates handed out to people present were supposed to affect on-line voters???

This is a STRAW POLL, for goodness' sake. It means NOTHING except that the participants voted a certain way.

Surveys that allow Internet input are suspect, largely because people who'll vote online may not go to the poll or even be eligible to.

The candidate will be Romney, Giuliani, or Thompson. Huckabee doesn't have name recognition nationally, McCain can't win the conservative vote with his voting record, and Ron Paul -- no matter how much some people like his ideas -- is a contrarian with the presence of a stiff, old pastor.

Of the three viable candidates, only Thompson can be characterized as a conservative.

The Values Voters summit was awesome. I went this weekend. The most hilarious thing was that it seemed like it was more of a Mike Huckabee rally than a conservative bi-partisan summit. So many people had Huckabee stickers and pins it was ridiculous.

The funniest thing was when the poll results were announced. When they announced Huckabee got in 2nd by 1/4 of 1% the crowd erupted. When the announcer said Mitt Romney won in total votes there was a smattering of clapping here and there...but most of the room was silent. Huckabee totally one that one.

At the press conference afterwards when I found out that Huckabee received 488 on-site votes compared to second place on-site finisher Romney's 99 votes...I laughed some more. That is 51.26% Huckabee and 10.40% Romney (thats a difference of 40.86%). Huckabee was the only candidate that was in the triple digits. What a landslide.

What we all may sometimes may fail to remember is that many of the folks AT the event voted online too, either on there electronic device or at home before coming. They have had since August to vote.

A conservative who acknowldges the working man base of the Republican Party. A conservative who embraces fundamental tax reform that deals out of the picture the army of D.C. tax lobbyists who now run the show. A Christian who bears no animosity toward his political opponents. A sunny disposition and a lot of common sense. No wonder Mike Huckabee has a hard time raising money--he's too good, too outside Washington, and too original. He seems smart enough and likable enough, however, to go toe-to-toe very appealingly with Hillary Clinton. Maybe those who held off before will now decide the world can be what we make it and give him a chance--and some money.

what no mention of Ron Paul in the article? I AM NOT SURPRISED!The corporate shill's are afraid of Dr.Ron Paul.Ron Paul gets his cash from the people while the puppets get their money from their masters.Ron Paul 2008.You lie with the rest unless you go with the best.

Thompson sounds like a dork when he talks.UhDu.Where da script at?Remember people voted in arnold because dae seen him on da television. Now the guy has made the homosexual's agenda manditory in California schools.Yes now a boy can use the girls bathroom if he chooses to be girl.Check these people out before you back them.research arnold and learn about his father and what his fantasies are.Thompson made a trip to Israel(his very first)before announcing he will run.made his pledge to his new masters i assume.Ron Paul can not be bought and he has no masters.Except for the people of course.

Go Romney go...

Let’s just say, those sadly misinformed evangelicals from South Carolina and Iowa have indeed gone out on a limb alone by indorsing Romney.

If seeking a man of godly wisdom in a candidate were preferred, which should be, then perhaps a closer look at Mike Huckabee would be the prudent thing to do. He’s track record revels uncommon wisdom and insight with integrity to resolve difficult issues without the influence of those who are self-serving. Don’t say it too loud, but Huckabee’s wisdom extends beyond what we’ve seen in decades and without a doubt, he possesses more in his little finger then all the other candidates combined. Mike Huckabee is more then exciting, he’s exceedingly necessary!

Anything less is to waste valuable time and money!
