Romney Scores An Important South Carolina Endorsement

19 Oct 2007 12:54 pm

It's Dr. Don Wilton, the pastor of the largest Baptist Church in Spartanburg and the immediate past president of the South Carolina Southern Baptist convention. Do not be surprised if his endorsement -- combined with the public endorsement of Bob Jones, III, give Romney the momentum he needs to cross that last threshold -- what Mark DeMoss, a Romney adviser, calls the "I'm not for a Mormon. I'm for THIS Mormon" effect.

That is -- Romney's relentlessness and often monotonous repetition of his conversion story, the hours he spends with each evangelical leader his campaign pursues, the work of key advisers like Peter Flaherty and Gary Marx, the fecklessness of Fred Thompson's late entrance, the public opposition to Rudy Giuliani, James Dobson's tacit acceptance of Romney -- it's working.

(Do not underestimate same-sex marriage in Massachusetts -- where Romney, in real time, fought for his conception of families and subsequently saw doors open to him.)

(Do not underestimate the implied comparisons between Ann Romney and brood with the Giuliani wives and personal life and Thompson's colorful reputation.)

When doctrinally sensitive Southern Baptist leaders start to support Romney (over former Southern Baptist ministers), Fred Thompson has, at most, a few weeks to prevent his cup from runnething over.

"I am proud to stand alongside Governor Romney as he pursues our nation's highest office. His values are my values – protecting the sanctity of human life, defending marriage and strengthening the family. We need someone in Washington who will stand up for traditional families and Governor Romney is that person," said Dr. Wilton. "While we may not agree on theology, Governor Romney and I agree that this election is about our country heading in the right direction. Governor Romney is the best candidate to stand for conservative values in Washington."

Excerpts from Romney's FRC speech are after the jump.

I think those who know me would say that I am pro-family on every level, from personal to political. I know this: the greatest blessing in my life is Ann and our five sons and daughters-in-law and ten grandchildren. My driving motivation is to have our kids and grandkids grow up in an America that is safe, prosperous and strong.

To achieve that, it’s not just what happens in the White House that matters, it is also what happens in your house. America’s future will determined not just by heads of state but also by heads of households.

But there is another reason, a societal reason, for the fundamental role of family. Family is the building block of the nation; it is the economic unit of our society. This is not just rhetoric. It is reality.

For all these reasons, a society is wealthier, healthier and stronger when it has strong families. In America, then, the family is a vital economic unit, the foundation of our nation. And it is the strength of this nation’s families that ultimately determines America’s strength in the family of nations.

That is why I believe that the most important work for the future of America is the work that goes on within the four walls of the American home.

One of the biggest threats to the fabric of our society is out-of-wedlock childbirth. 1) Ann and I will use the bully pulpit to teach America’s children that before they have babies, they should get married. It’s time to make out-of-wedlock births out-of-fashion again!

Bill Cosby related that in some inner cities: “There are whole blocks with scarcely a married couple, whole blocks without responsible males to watch out for wayward boys, whole neighborhoods in which little boys and girls come of age without seeing up close a committed relationship and perhaps never having attended a wedding.” This simply breaks my heart. And then there are the broad national implications of this tragedy. A nation built on the principles of the founding fathers cannot thrive when so many children are being raised without fathers in the home.

And if I am elected President, I will convene a White House Summit to look at ways we can strengthen the family, particularly in the inner city.

I will work with the people in this room as I have for the past 4 years, to champion a federal marriage amendment to protect marriage as the union of a man and a woman. They said it was in our state Constitution. John Adams, who wrote it, would be surprised. It was not in our Constitution, but it was in the heads of a one vote majority on the bench to birth new law without the benefit of the democracy.

I will appoint and fight for justices who follow the law and the constitution, who understand judicial restraint and who won’t legislate from the bench. But being a pro-life president also means promoting policies that reflect our respect for the sanctity of life. I will oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, oppose partial birth abortion, oppose abortion in military clinics, oppose funding abortion in international aid programs, and I will work to ban embryonic cloning. I will work to increase adoptions by making the adoption tax credit permanent and raising awareness about embryonic adoption, or snowflake babies.

Actually, I’m pleased that so many people of many faiths have come to endorse my candidacy and my message. My campaign is about changing Washington to strengthen America: I want to build a stronger military, a stronger economy, and stronger families. I call these the three legs of the Republican stool. These three unite the coalition of conservatives that Ronald Reagan championed—defense conservatives, economic conservatives, and social conservatives.

We won’t win the White House with only 2 out of 3 or 1 out of 3. Republicans win the White House by motivating all 3 parts of our coalition to carry us to victory. We’re not going to beat Hillary Clinton by acting like Hillary Clinton.

Mitt is the best hope America has!

I pray that real American's turn out for Mitt Romney and defeat those who would make the same mistake again with the Clinton's or any other Democrat for that matter.

Go MITT, GO!!!

I love Mitt,We need him to restore the GOp moral authority to the party at the head of it.There are millions and millions of people fed up with the way our society isheaded. At least Mitt is talking about it. Hopefully he can win some black folks over.

If Mitt gets the nod, I'm voting third party. ANd I won't be the only one.

Mitt is a disengenious fraud who will say anything to get elected...The man is just on a power trip...

Mitt would be an absolute dangerous man as president...He'd just be another overly invasive religious zealot who would shove his brand of morality down everyone's throats...

What this country needs is a person who can focus on the real problems in society today (Iraq mess, healthcare, education, environment, etc.) & quit focusing on trival NON-SENSE like gay marriage, abortion, & pornography...

I would be truly EMBARASSED to call myself an American if Mitt Romney were elected president....Mitt is an arrogant, condasending, smug, pompous, sanctimonious jerk....

Go Hillary, or Barack, or J. Edwards!, ANY Democrat would be better than the Republican nominees....

Mitt's the most qualified person to ever run for president of the USA. We are lucky to have someone with his strong cross-funtional experience willing to jump into this campaign especially the way the liberal press and the Democrats attack Republicans.

Mitt can win in 2008. He's the only Republican running that can which is way the liberal wolfpack press and the Democrats continue to attack him and constantly brings up his religion.

If Americans liked Ronald Reagan they are going to love Mitt Romney!

GO MITT.....!!

What an incredibly moving speech. This sort of leadership can help solve some of our social problems.

I'm voting for Romney should he get the nomination. I'm not likely to vote for any other Republican should they get the nomination. The reason? All the others are defective when it comes to conservative (actually true liberal) values. As far as hillary, edwards or obama, they're so far left and devoid of true principles it would be a disaster if any of them became president.

I'm on board with Mitt. There is real truth in what he is saying. The family has been and will ALWAYS be the foundation for a thriving society. Allen is 100% correct. There has never been an individual so uniquely qualified to run the largest enterprise in the world for the last century. I'm proud to be a conservative Catholic, and I wouldn't consider Rudy (also a "catholic") over Mitt on any day. We need a man who understands the fundamental premise of American values- and that is an utmost respect for every form of human life and policies that champion that concept. So what if he converted to a pro-life stance? Is that not our entire point as Christians? For others to understand the destructive force of both abortion and corruption of the family unit in our society?! I'm proud that our brothers and sisters in the Baptist community have endorsed him.

Kudos to these excellent remarks of people who can see that Mitt's religion is not the story. The big picture are his values, commitment to decency, commitment to the three "legs" of the stool that will bring stability to this country: Strong Defense, Strong economy, and Strong families. We are lucky to have this man running for president.

GO MITT!

If Rudy gets the nod, I'm voting third party. ANd I won't be the only one.

If Fred gets the nod, I'm voting third party. ANd I won't be the only one.

rick is an obvious entitlement abuser, who has drank too much "free" kool-aid.move to russia you filty piece of obama.and wipe the cheeto dust off your face and get hitlery's head out of your edwards!!!!!!you should be ashamed of yourself, but wait there is no shame in liberal's wacked sense, only empty pockets waiting to be filled by honest hard working americans.i am tired of it and so are americans,of which you do not qualify.

No Rich, you stupid Great Santini type Republican....I went to college & graudate school & guarantee I take more expensive vacations than you, absolutely guaranteed.....NO one has given me anything, I've never taken one dollar from the govt....

Your just another warped bible-thumping insane Republican.....

I'm not sure what Romney thinks he can do by saying he will strengthen the family... that's not the president's job. And that's one of the reasons I WON'T vote for him. Romney wants to overstep his constitutional rights and try to do things he as president is not supposed to do. I also don't trust him. He's lied and flip-flopped too many times. If Ron Paul doesn't get the party ticket, I am washing my hands of the Republican party and voting independent.

Vote Ron Paul for 2008.

I have small balls and confidence issues. I can't help for being bitter at the world.

Because I'm a conservative I could never vote for ROmney. COnservativism means SMALL government; less power for the Federal Government, more for the state; it is about government staying OUT of people's lives--both their pocket books AND their bedrooms.

Romney is a socialist; he wants the government to socially engineer society.

I'm also a Mormon and I think it's sickening that Romney is denying and downplaying what is unqiue about Mormonism is order to please the Religious Right--people who view Mormons as dangerous to Christianity.

Looking at the disgusting display of politicians courting one particular religious community (evangelicals/fundamentalists) in our nation, all I can think is that James Madison--The Father of the Constitution, and a pasionate advocate of religious freedom-- must be slamming his head against his coffin lid.

Checkout how clueless, dumb and fake Romney is: Today Multiple Choice Mitt decides that the US should pull out of organizations that we’re already out of:

Romney Vows: US Will Quit The League Of Nations!

“The United Nations has been an extraordinary failure of late,” Romney said during a South Carolina campaign stop. “We should withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council.”

There’s one problem: The United States already boycotts the Human Rights Council, and has not sought a seat on it. This caused an aide to clarify the remarks by saying what Romney really meant is that the U.S. should stop any possible financial support for the council.

Bully pulpits and summits are worthless to discourage illegitimacy, if we continue to federally fund it through welfare.

A federal amendment against gay marriage? Read the Constitution, and you'll find that the President has zero, repeat, zero role in constitutional amendments.

That torture is a non-issue among these people shows you how truly 'christian' they are.

Mitt’s church, the Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) has been often misunderstood by Evangelical preachers in the past . . Some accused the Church of not believing in Christ and, therefore, not being a Christian religion . .

http://MormonsAreChristian.blogspot.com/ helps to clarify such misconceptions by examining early (First Century) Christianity's theology relating to baptism, the Godhead, the deity of Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Mitt’s church believes in the Jesus of the New Testament, who prayed to his Father in Heaven in the Garden of Gethsemane, not the Jesus portrayed in the creeds of the 4th Century.

The Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) adheres to Early Christian (New Testament) theology more closely than other Christian denominations. . Perhaps the reason Evangelical preachers promoted this mis-representation was to protect their flock (and their livlihood). It is encouraging to note that Evangelical preachers appear now to have a moral and competent president as a priority..

Romney is the man! When people actually hear him speak they love him. When they actually get to know him and his record they love him even more.

This is a country of 300 million, so when you say "if Mitt wins the nomination I'll vote third-party, and I won't be the only one" then you're either a prophet or a ignorant fool.

I measure the republican candidates' strength by who is attacked most often and most vociferously by the Democratic National Committee's Website. They realize who is the biggest threat to Hillarydom. The candidate they hit hardest is Mitt Romney. It is amusing that they have used the Flip Flop moniker so often against him given Hillary's contortions on nearly every subject. Bloggers and media elites couldn't help pile on with the phrase since it was used to beat up Kerry in the prior Election.

Here is why they fear Romney. Anyone who goes in with half of an open mind and listens to him speak comes away impressed. It is easy to call him an opportunist and even a fraud, but it impossible to find proof. He is actually honorable, loyal to wife, family and country, hardworking and honest. Those who have worked most closely with him in business, in the Olympics and in Massachusetts revere him as all of those things. The man has no skeletons. Contrast that with those who have worked with or been around Hillary and the Clinton machine. This scares the hell out of the DNC. Romney has my vote.

In line with DLounsbury's comment I think it interesting to see not only who is for, but who is against, Mitt. The most prominent Evangelical against him has an INTERNET audience of a mere 2 million, not even close to the following Dr Paul has.

But the most telling, I think, is the Democratic Party of the Commonwealth of MASS.

Look at the resoureces they are STILL spending on a man that they've already insured can NOT run in their state again. The opposition that most knows Mitt is implicitly SCREAMING in fear through their efforts. They know he can beat Hillary, they know he can buck what is seen by many as impossible and they are scared to death. Scared enough to dedicate a sizable portion of theiri resources to putting up an elaborate website SPECIFICALLY to fight Mitt. Does the official Dem party of New York have an elaborate website set up specifically to attack Rudy? What about the Dem party of Tennessee respective to Fred?

Watch not only those who endorse the man but those who feel compelled to attack him.

GO MITT GO!! I got to meet him last week and he is the real deal.. we all got to ask him tough questions that he fielded on the fly and hit home runs every time. A totally awesome individual. And he has REAL answers to help families that will work.

If Fred gets the big prize and who isn't impressed so far, we could mend our differences with Mexico in a week. Every day we could have a planned siesta 2-3 hour break for all the hard working people who look up to someone with a lazy streak that makes the Rio Grande look like the Atlantic Ocean. Mrs. Fred knows where her man is at all times (usually napping) unlike a former Mrs. Bill who the question was, with whom is he napping?

Geritol and Viagra (see Fred walk)

Mitt Romney is a real and great guy! So what if he wants to strengthen the family, AMERICA NEEDS IT!!!! He has great values and really knows how to give a good, TRUE speech! I am mormon myself, and no we are not polygamist pigs who don't belive in god. We believe in god and Jesus Christ and in the holy ghost. SO WHAT IF HE IS MORMON!!! He has got my vote

Romney is not very honest about his own religion and what he believes. He refuses to answer any questions about this very important part of his life.

Civil marriage has been regulated by each State since before the foundation of the Republic. Reduction in the size and power of the Federal government has been a 'conservative' agenda item since before Reagen. And somehow, when 'conservatives' can't prevent States from extending marriage equality to all people, the 'conservatives' are screaming for the Federal government to step in and stop it. Funny, huh?

Who cares if Romney is faking it; as long as he walks the talk as President, he'll be a net positive.

Just one more plug for Dr. Ron Paul. Look at his voting record, what he stands for, and what he would continue to do for America. He's the only true conservative on the stage, one who would decrease taxes AND spending. Seriously folks, the "top tier" candidates have been chosen for you, Ron Paul is the one guy YOU can choose.

For all the Evangelicals reading this, tell me if you would vote for this man:

1. He has been the number one persecutor of Christians on the planet.
2. He has had enumerable innocent Christians jailed and/or killed.
3. He has made it his life's mission to wipe Christianity from the face of the earth.

Would you vote for this? If he told you he had changed and now supported Christianity, would you believe him? Would you trust him?

You better answer "yes" because I just described the man who wrote half of the New Testament.

His name is Paul, it used to be Saul.

You embrace Paul, and yet you reject Romney because he used to be pro-choice and now he is pro-life? You say you cannot trust him?

God could have chosen anyone to be his #1 Apostle, yet he chose Paul, his #1 enemy. Who better to champion a cause than someone who used to believe the opposite and has seen the light?

Romney understands what it was to be pro-choice, and now he understands what it is to have converted on that issue.

Who would be the best person to champion our cause then? God chose his greatest enemy, who will you choose?

Why would Mitt name one of his sons Tagg? Because he's "it"?

That's funny, somebody took my comment, cloned it complete with typo. Funny! Must be one of those crazy Mitts.

This is great for two reasons. First, the endorsement of a Mormon by a Southern Baptist minister shows the religious belief of some to be - as Auntie Scalia would say - the political expedient that it is. More importantly, I hope that social conservatives now rally around Romney so that the Democratic nominee - whoever he or she is - can wipe the floor with him. Praise the Lord.

What is the South Carolina Southern Baptist Convention? There is no such animal. It is the Baptist State Convention of South Carolina, or the South Carolina Baptist State Convention. The relationship to the Southern Baptist Convention is cooperative, not organic. The SC convention is autonomous.

Paul Cook-Giles,

Good point, but you know it goes both ways. Democrats never hesitate to cry "states' rights" when it serves their agenda.

Go Mitt
