Romney Seeks To Close The Deal In New Hampshire

30 Oct 2007 09:28 am

To make sure Mitt Romney's slim but steady lead in New Hampshire holds up, his campaign will take steps to "tighten" his message there and "close the deal" with conservative voters, advisers said today.

Romney's television traffic will begin to emphasize his experience as a businessman above all else -- his tenure at Bain Capital and his stewardship of the 2002 Olympic Games. Those biographical ads, which will be reinforced on the radio and through the mail, will be interspersed with traditional issues ads on subjects like immigration and spending.

To date, Romney's campaign in New Hampshire has been aggressive and loosely focused. It has succeeded, according to public and internal polls, in attracting hard core conservatives. But his advisers acknowledge that he has not sealed the deal.

There might be too many Romney messages out there. He speaks often of the three-legged stool and the need for a Republican presidential nominee to be seen as favoring strong families, a strong economy and a strong national defense. There is no single attribute that defines Romney -- no hook on which voters can hang their support. By contrast, Rudy Giuliani is identified with September 11th and his stewardship in New York City, and John McCain's status as a hero (or as a 2000-era reformer) is often the first thing that comes to the mind of New Hampshire voters.

For Romney, that hook will be his career as a business executive and record as manager.

Romney's tightening focus comes as Rudy Giuliani begins a push to usurp Romney's first-place position there. The Giuliani campaign has about as many staffers in New Hampshire as it does in Iowa and Florida. Strategists see the state as their prime opportunity to steal a victory from the early-state frontrunner -- Romney. Indeed, Giuliani's positions on moral issues are unobjectionable to most Republicans. And his tenure as mayor of New York City poses no ontological problems for Northeastern Republicans.

To date, Giuliani has confused his rivals by his absence from the television airwaves. His campaign makes tens of thousands of voter contacts a week by mail and telephone, and his radio ads are ubiquitous.

John McCain is a hero? What is his power?

Boy this article was random and misleading.

To say that "there is no single attribute that defines Romney -- no hook on which voters can hang their support" is ludicrous and a flat out lie. Can you say, "Harvard, BYU, Winter Olympics, Bain Capital?"

Read his history and background, and then rewrite your article. You may want to begin your research with something basic, like the following:

http://www.mittromney.com/Learn-About-Mitt/Photo-Album/Romney-As-Governor/Governor_Romneyxs_Accomplishments

I think what they are saying is the general population have not attached Mitt Romney's name to anything specific. Rudy and 9/11, McCain and his imprisonment, but Romney hasn't really touted his biggest public accomplishments. He's mostly sprayed numerous ads regarding many different topics. Because of that, they have not settled on a specific accomplishment in Gov. Romney's past. So, to start to establish that, they'll really start pushing his success at Bain and the Olympics so he becomes the Businessman (the outsider) to change Washington.

I think the general population IS getting information on Mitt Romney, and they are liking what they see -- the non-liberal polls are showing this. At one point in time he was an unknown, unlike today -- hence, the advertising is paying off.

So, we're supposed to look at an article from the Rolling Stone magazine as something official? My first guess would be that it just might be biased, and intended for some entertainment.

-- there is no single attribute that defines Romney

Are you living on the same planet? There is a single attribute that defines Romney and that is a "flipflopper".

Is there any other politician out there who has flipflopped as much as Romney? No one even comes close to this empty suite.

A New Record for Mitt-Flopping

Most of Romney's famous flip-flops have come over a period of years, as he ran to the left in his Massachusetts races and is now running hard right away from that record for a national Republican primary. So this 1 minute, 13 second video of a recent campaign appearance is probably a record. Romney begins his response to a question about Social Security by saying quite firmly:

"I'm not in favor of privatizing Social Security or making cuts."

Twenty seconds later, though, it was a different story:

Romney: "The two major paths we have are one, to raise taxes on people, which I don't want to do, and the other is to allow some portion of people's money that they are are now having taken out of their salary to be invested in Social Security, have some of that be allowed by them to be invested."

Questioner-"That's privatization."

Romney - "You call it privatization, I call it a private account."

Find out what Mitt Romney really said and what he really represents, not what the liberal press rights. Look at all the candidates, including Hillary, and you will find that many, if not all, have changed views. Figure out why, is it all political? If any of them have changed a single position, then they also should be loudly labeled a "Flip Flopper." What's good for one, is good for all.

With your help, he will make a difference!

Mitt Romney never supported Abortion or Gay Marriage in Mass. He basically told the state that he would not try to OVERTURN current abortion/gay marriage laws, but at the same time he NEVER instituted any new laws on it's support. Every time a pro-abortion/gay marriage idea came up on his desk, he quickly threw it out.

To say that Romney ran to the 'hard left' in Mass. is a huge exaggeration. Sure, he never tried to overturn abortion/gay marriage while he was governer, but he's never supported abortion or gay marriage, personally or publically.

Now, as President, he has said that he WILL overturn liberal laws on abortion and gay marriage.

Now, compare that record with Guliani and you will see who is the real liberal.

Go Mitt!

Romney has a good strategy.

And I think he does have a defining factor, even if it isn't the preferred one. When people think Romney, they think Mormon. I'm not sure what that has to do with politics, but there you go.

Thinking him as a Mormon is a very high compliment and should help him with his campaign -- as it appears to be doing.

Romney's flipflopping past is unparalleled.

~ Romney was pro-choice before he was against it

~ Romney was for gay rights before he was against it

~ Romney told Ed Kennedy during their debates that he (Romney) will do more to fight for the rights of gay people than Ted Kennedy.

~ Romney was for teaching kids about inappropriate touching before he was against it

~ Romney maintains that he changed his position on abortion to pro-life after a "single revelatory moment" in November 2004.

VS.

FACT: A new video shows Mitt Romney, just six months after his so-called epiphany, declaring himself "absolutely committed" to supporting pro-choice laws.

~ Romney was for Roe vs. Wade before he was against it

~ Romney was for Immigration Reforms before he was against it

"Giuliani's positions on moral issues are unobjectionable to most Republicans."

Huh? Dressing in drag, having gay roommates, multiple affairs and divorces, being pro-abortion, being pro-gay rights?

Unobjectionable to which Republicans?

HuckforaBuck... your ridiculous and your candidate has no chance. Us rank-and-file republicans like Huckabee for his Toastmaster skills... but he's no leader... and he's not a fiscal conservative. Enjoy Huckabees 4 weeks in the limelight... but watch him fade fast. You don't honestly think the party is going to back him to go up against Hillary?

I honestly think the whole flip-flop thing is overblown for Romney... he's not even my favorite candidate running (I contributed to Guiliani)... but Mitt seems to be a competent... good leader. There don't appear to be too many skeletons in his closet... so surely his competitors have to come up with something... and flip..flopping is what they've used. Listening to the rhetoric... I think the evidence is sketchy at best.

Guiliani is really the ultimate hard-nosed leader who can beat Hillary. My concern is that he isn't taking these early states seriously. If Romney wins in Iowa... he'll get an 8 point bounce... and likely win in New Hampshire. If he wins there... he'll get another 8 point bounce and likely win Michigan and South Carolina. If he does that... Guilani is TOAST. I am really nervous about Guiliani not at least trying in Iowa.

Romney has certainly become more socially conservative in recent years but the attacks on his abortion and gay views are misleading. Mitt Romney never supported gay marriage and that is the only real issue here. As far as abortion goes, he has long opposed public funding for abortion, Guiliani and Clinton support that. He supported parental notification laws back in 1994 ( a huge factor in reducing abortion, teen pregnancy and std rates). Guiliani and Clinton are not fans of parental notification. Romney received the support of pro life groups when he was running for office in Mass. He opposed killing embyros for research. Clinton and Guiliani are in favor of that. Romney opposed the freedrom of choice act which would have enshrined abortion as a right.
Its not like this guy was an ally of planned parenthood and abortion clinics and abortion doctors like Guiliani and Clinton. One of the very first things Clinton will do when elected is restore funding for international abortion clinics, Romney isnt going to do that. Guiliani might.

ROMNEY WILL CLOSE THE DEAL.
THIS IS WHY!

1. Romney has a gold plated resume that blows every other candidates resume out of the water.

2. Romney has a solid record of turning businesses around by cutting out the waste and inefficiency in 100's of business, the Olympics, and as Governor of Mass.

4. Romney balanced the budget for four years straight in Mass. without raising taxes.

5. Romney defended Life, and the traditional family on every bill that came across his desk as governor.

6. Romney has a wonderful wife and family that would emulate the values that this country wants and desperately needs in the white house.

Romney has the best credentials by far, and has closed the deal with me. There is no doubt in my mind that he will close the deal in New Hampshire, win the nomination, and go on to blow Hillary out of the water.

Mitt you are our man! Take out Rudy, and Hillary and this nation will be better for it.

Go Mitt!!!

I have been considering Romney and Huckabee, but not Guliani. I would never vote for Guliani given his liberal views. Although I like the humor and many of the views Huckabee has, he just doesn't have the background and backbone that Romney has.

The fact that Romney is a Mormon in my mind gives him an edge over the other candidates as well. I have some Mormon neighbors and, although sometimes boring, their family values and service mindedness are second to none. Those kind of values, along with his no-nonsense business background, is what this country needs.

It is incredibly refreshing to hear a man speak about strengthening the family, and actually feel that he means it. I don't see how any American would not think he would make a good president. He's an incredible family man, with amazing morals and personal values. On top of all that, he has demonstrated that he CAN manage our country and do it well. Go Mitt

A vote for Romney is a vote for torture.

This is so exciting that Mitt Romney has been able to rise above the negative media portrayals and Mormon bashing and has a real shot at the presidency. This man is one who truly represents American values and has the ability to govern in the way the founding fathers intended. What an opportunity we have to finally be represented by a good man who has no skeletens in his closet or secondary agenda. Come on America... hang in there and vote for a true hope. Romney will be the medicine this country needs.

Mitt has flipped (evolved) but I say, he's never flopped (reverted to an old stance)! Get it straight.

Mitt has flipped (evolved) but I say, he's never flopped (reverted to an old stance)! Get it straight.

How can Giuliani even claim to be a Republican? He is almost a liberal as Hillary!

Pro Choice
Pro Gun Control
Pro Illegal Immigration
Pro Gay marriage
Divorced his second wife due to his extramarital affair.
Dysfunctional family.
Even the NYC firefighters hate him.

Do the California fires qualify Schwarzenegger to become President based on the idea that California was prepared for the fire.
Giuliani, as the mayor of NYC, definitely was not prepared for 9/11. How does that qualify him to be President of the US? Someone once said that if not for 9/11, Giuliani would just be a small man with a lisp.

The MSM is pushing for Giuliani, giving him lots of press, and claiming he is leading everywhere. I think there is a method in their madness. Kind of the tail wagging the dog idea.

Romney has the background to be a successful President. He can work with both parties as has been demonstrated in Mass. And he is honest - a straight shooter.

I've never seen a more perfect nominee for President than Mitt Romney.

He is goodlooking, a family man who loves his family, he is loaded with class, and he doesn't stumble over his words when he gets in front of a microphone.

He has proven his ability to manage, by taking Massachusetts, one of the most liberal states in the U.S., lowered taxes and balanced the budget.

If Mitt gets the nomination, and I have no doubt he will, Hillary doesn't stand a chance to win the Presidency.

Electing Hillary Clinton for President, would be equivalent to selecting Janet Reno as "Miss America".

Dept of Justice has declined to prosecute $300 million in fraud that benefited Romney's Bain entity when Romney was still controlling manager in 2001.

The Law firm of MNAT and TBF have confessed to supplying false more than 19 affidavits to the federal court during the eToys bankruptcy case as they worked for eToys when they sold the assets of eToys to their other client Bain/KB Toys for tens of millions in discounts.

Now it is discovered that the US Attorney, Colm F Connolly, was a partner with the MNAT law firm in 2001. Refusing to prosecute your former partners, clents and associates seems to be a good career move as Colm Connolly is now nominated to be a US Dist Ct Judge.

You can see our online affidavits at http://www.laserhaas.wordpress.com or http://fraud-corruption-mnat.townhall.com/default.aspx and the Wall Street Journal story on the plea deal made by law firm TBF, which is now disbanded, where TBF only had to pay a $750,000 fine and remained in charge and continued with the $300 million in Fraud. http://www.wjfa.net/bk/etoys.html

What a wonderful country we live in where even a Presidential hopeful can enjoy deferred prosecution.
