Rudy's Burning

04 Oct 2007 05:19 pm

Rudy Giuliani may be concerned about how much money the Democrats are raising, but he sure is spending up a storm.

His burn rate this quarter exceeded 100%. Giuliani reported having $18.3m on hand at end of the second quarter. If the math is right, he wound up spending $12m this quarter.

So both Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani spent about 120% of what they took in.

And without his own money, Romney would have about $500,000 in the bank.

To put Rudy's $12 million in perspective:

Clinton spent $12.7 in Q2 (no TV advertising). Obama spent $16 million (TV in Iowa).

Romney is really the amazing story. He's spent $53 million to date and is barely above 10% in the national polls. It's really an amazing testimony to how much people dislike him as a Stepford phoney.

Is that without his money overall, or just without his money from this quarter?

Yeah, Marc, that 500K figure is not accurate.

COH is a cumulative number, so you have to subtract the cumulative self-funding/debt from that, too.

Mitt is -$8.5M after subtracting his $17.5M in debt.

Well without hs money he presumably wouldn't be spending as much either...

At this rate Giuliani will soon start raising funds by selling ashes of 9/11 victims on ebay. He is a real volture for sure.

What has happened is that Romney has spent all his money in places like Iowa and New Hampshire, so those voters know him. Across the nation, Romney has little name recognition which is apparent from the national polls. If the voters in Iowa and New Hampshire stay with him as his candidate even though Giuliani is leading nationally, he would probably win the nomination. Giuliani needs to somehow be able to keep him from winning one of the first two states, because the momentum would easily sway the national polls.

Just to talk more about Ronnie's points.

If Romney wins in Iowa o the 14th and Michigan on the 15th, (and he's leading in both states according to the polls), the momentum should give him at least 5-10 points in Nevada and South Carolina.

He's leading in Nevada, but the polling is incomplete to say the least, while trailing in South Carolina.

If Romney then wins in Nevada and places well in South Carolina, (within 5% of the leader), it will give him a bigger boost nationally.

Finally, if he takes New Hampshire, it's over. Even if Rudy Giuliani swamps Florida, (and he should), Romney will go into Super Tuesday with enough momentum to win it all.

On the other hand, if Rudy Giuliani wins any of the early states, it will cause Romney's momentum to stale and that will cost him dearly.

I don't understand why this "without his money" issue is relevant. He is only spending money because he has it.

Candidates use money to spread their message and go out to meet voters.

TV and Radio stations do not care where the money came from, they will run the ads if they get paid.

Commenting about Mitt using his own money is just a way to detract from the fact that he has raised more money for the primary than any other candidate on the Republican side. The fact that he has done that and has his own money available is why he will be the Republican nominee. Anyone that has run a business knows that you budgets change based on what cash is available to you. Romney spending as much as he has is because he can!
