"Diamonds v. Pearls" Student Blasts CNN (Updated With CNN Response)

16 Nov 2007 11:21 am

Maria Luisa, the UNLV student who asked Hillary Clinton whether she preferred "diamonds or pearls" at last night's debate wrote on her MySpace page this morning that CNN forced her to ask the frilly question instead of a pre-approved query about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

"Every single question asked during the debate by the audience had to be approved by CNN," Luisa writes. "I was asked to submit questions including "lighthearted/fun" questions. I submitted more than five questions on issues important to me. I did a policy memo on Yucca Mountain a year ago and was the finalist for the Truman Scholarship. For sure, I thought I would get to ask the Yucca question that was APPROVED by CNN days in advance."

Now, Luisa is getting "swamped" with critical e-mails.

So what happened?

Writes Luisa:

"CNN ran out of time and used me to "close" the debate with the pearls/diamonds question. Seconds later this girl comes up to me and says, "you gave our school a bad reputation.' Well, I had to explain to her that every question from the audience was pre-planned and censored. That's what the media does. See, the media chose what they wanted, not what the people or audience really wanted. That's politics; that's reality. So, if you want to read about real issues important to America--and the whole world, I suggest you pick up a copy of the Economist or the New York Times or some other independent source. If you want me to explain to you how the media works, I am more than happy to do so. But do not judge me or my integrity based on that question."
Rivals to Clinton believe that the debate audience had a pro-Clinton tilt. UNLV was responsible for distributing most of the tickets.

In a separate post, Luisa provides the question she wanted to ask:

Yucca Mountain, NV is the proposed site for the country's nuclear waste repository. Despite scientific evidence that it is a vulnerable site, the federal government continues to push for the plan to move forward. The evidence relied on is unsound and the risks involved in transporting high-level radioactive waste across the country are high. What will you [Sen. Clinton] do to ensure that the best site/s is/are chosen for the storage of spent nuclear reactor fuel?

Sam Feist, the executive producer of the debate, said that the student was asked to choose another question because the candidates had already spent about ten minutes discussing Yucca Mountain.

"When her Yucca mountain question was asked, she was given the opportunity to ask another question, and my understanding is that the [diamond v. pearls] questions was her other question," Feist said. "She probably was disappointed, but we spent a lot of time with a bunch of different candidates on Yucca Mountain, and we were at the end of the debate."

Greg Sargent of TPM Election Central has a CNN spoxperson giving a slightly different story...

Almost a Truman Scholar and she gets to ask a Diamond vs Pearl question? Too embarrassing to say the least. And yes, the audience was stacked with Clinton supporters. CNN lost another chunk of the 10 percent credibility they had left.

"UNLV was responsible for distribuing most of the tickets."

I'm under the impression that Harry Reid's state party was responsible for distribuing most of the tickets.

Are you sure about your facts here, Marc?

This incidence once again proves that how out of touch the MSM is. Yesterday's debate was very poorly handled by CNN. The questions and the audience was clearly pro-Hillary.

BTW, is CNN brain dead in bringing in James Carville (a Clinton supporter), David Gergen (guy worked for Clinton WH) and CNN's own Campbell (married to republican operative and Dept of Defence spokesman till last year, David Senor) for doing the post debate analysis?? They all praised Hillary. What else one should expect from these hacks? Its time for MSM to wake up.

This was the worst debate I've seen so far this year. They handled the pre-debate show poorly by handing things off to Lou Dobbs (who is clearly a xenophobe), they handled the debate itself horrendously (interrupting candidates every 5 seconds and modifying questions in an attempt to play "gotcha" and create sound bite clips for themselves later), and they handled the post-debate show poorly by ensuring that everyone but the Republican had ties to the Clinton White House. CNN is an equal to FOX News in their bias and inaccuracy.

In addition, it was clear that the questions weren't written by audience members, but were modified for them to read/memorize - that was clear from the first question on - and when Suzanne Malvaux modified the one woman's question to just "will you support a nominee that would overturn Roe" - why bother with the pretense of having audience questions at all? Why not just stick with the moderators the entire time if the goal is to control the questions and debate.

And the diamonds and pearls question? As a woman I was offended by it. I felt sorry for the student who had to ask it - clearly she's smarter than that (based on your post here), and what a frivolous way to wrap things up. I have more respect for the UFO question from the last debate than I do for this one - and that's saying something!

CNN failed big time. They looked like amateurs. The Democrats shouldn't attend another debate sponsored by them.

And all this after CNN itself ragged on Hillary when her staffer planted questions at a rally in Iowa. Silly, silly CNN.

...and what was to stop her from asking her original question when the mike was in front of her?

coward...

oh no, look, wolfies all PO'd at me!

...too many sheep in this nation...

So this is what Clinton feminism looks like. What a complete disgrace and mockery of democracy. After the unrelenting nightmare of the last 7 years, I will never vote for phony, desperate to win at any cost, manipulating Clinton who would rather laugh and equivocate than deal with the serious issues of our time with integrity and sincerity. Our nation deserves much, much better.

Thank you for shedding light on this ongoing fiasco.

And right after the debate to have the pro Hillary commentators, spitting out of both sides of their mouth oowey gooey Hillary won stuff. Ugghh. Unbelievable! If I were a first time voter I'd be so turned off by these Clinton politics. Well, Obama can celebrate with another great endorsement today! GO OBAMA!

Posted by Petey: "UNLV was responsible for distribuing most of the tickets." I'm under the impression that Harry Reid's state party was responsible for distribuing most of the tickets.
Are you sure about your facts here, Marc?

Well, maybe that explains everything. Reid's son is Clinton's Nevada campaign chair.

Maybe they were just trying to make up for the last debate on NBC where Russert, Williams, and Mathews did nothing but attack Clinton. I'm no big fan of HRC, but, "more", if you think the MSM is going easy on Clinton you're the one who needs to wake up.

She should have asked the Yucca question anyway and just gotten removed from the stage.

Another planted question designed to make Clinton look good.

CNN is the Clinton News Network.

Terrible.

The conclusion that it was a partisan crowd rests on the premise that the crowd as a whole booed Senator Obama and John Edwards when they either raised their differences with Senator Clinton ...

... or, in one case, when Senator Obama started to tackle Senator Clinton when she repeated a crass tax scare line that was, indeed, laughably absurd with respect to retirees ... how much payroll income does Senator Clinton think that retirees have in a year? Is she thinking of retired CEO's that sit on the same boards that she does? ...

... but clearly it was not the whole crowd, it was a partisan contingent in the crowd.

Its simply a matter of finding your partisans in the crowd before hand, and priming them to "defend" their candidate from "mudslinging". She certainly has more than enough organization in the state to do that ... there was absolutely no need to stack the house ... the Clinton campaign was simply the campaign who felt confident they could get their partisans to boo without being booted from the event.

I agree that the moderators were terrible. It is inappropriate to sell a portion of the debate as "audience questions" and then change the majority of the questions.

The most egregious example was the person who asked about qualifications for Supreme Court justices. That lady in the blue suit holding the mike just tacked on the abortion aspect. Wolf followed suit and rephrased the question as an abortion-rights litmus-test question, which is was not. I liked how Biden said he would answer the question the woman asked and when she indicated she would like both questions answered, answered them both. After that, though, the question was only phrased as an abortion question.

Wolf Blitzer=worst debate moderator ever.
Russert is second worst. I am not a Hillary fan, but int hat last debate, he was clearly letting his anti-Clinton colors show, which is not the role of a debate moderator.

Overall, though, Clinton performed well last night. Not enough to win me over or anything, but I was impressed with her.

Last night, I was most impressed with Biden. He's really common-sense on most issues, IMO.

Yeah, but who else is going to cover this story...CNN? I don't think so, it will die because all the networks do it.

Prince made the song Diamonds and Pearl popular. Is this what is sounds like when the doves cry? Seriously, Clinton INC are millimeters left of center. This nation is leaning further right day by day. It is sad. Please all Anti-Hillary supporters rally to one true democrat. Just be cause she is labeled a democrat does not mean she represents you.

Petey is half right. UNLV distributed about half the tickets. I sat in that section. There were republcians, dems, independents. People were largely respectful and serious.

The other half of the hall (the side on which Biden sat) were tickets distributed by the state Democratic party. That area too had supporters of all the candidates. There were significant contingents of Obama, Clinton and Edwards supporters.

I'm quite sure that it was the Clinton supporters sitting in the Democratic party distributed ticket area who were booing during the debate. The other candidates supporters were there; they simply behaved themselves appropriately.

On the student, you may have the wrong student Mr. Ambinder. Today's Las Vegas Sun has a brief item about her which uses a different name.

Want a real presidential debate?

Get RID of the moderators, and install chess clocks.

Rules:

1. Candidates each have 10 minutes of mike time, controlled by a clock BUT it is not contiguous mike time. Whenever they want to talk, they hit the button on their chess clock and their mike turns on.

2. If they want to talk over each other, let them! The smart ones will clock out and save their minutes.

3. Let them talk about what-ever they want. The stupid ones will look stupid, the smart ones will look smart.

4. At the end of the night, someone will be smart enough to have the last word.

http://rewinn.blogspot.com/2007/10/real-presidential-debate-with-chess.html

I work at UNLV and am involved in local Democratic politics. UNLV was responsible for distributing half of the tickets, and the local Democratic party was responsible for distributing the other half.

Hillary supporters did the booing. It was embarrassing.

Ahhh...the parellels between CNN and Hillary. CNN calls itself "the best political team on television" and Hillary claims the "strength and experience" to be president....both breathless forms of hyperbole. Both Hillary and CNN plant questions. Both CNN and Hillary view truth as a relative matter. And they are both major embarrasments.

Hello kiddies. Do you not think (know) that all the producers and the moderators of the debate are the ones who select and choose the topic and phrasing of questions.

Listen Maria, you don't get to ask a question, unless it meets the producers program goals. Just because you are smart, you don't to be on Jeopardy. This is produced, by professional TV producers, with all the bells, whistles, graphics and story arc that is present in all TV shows.

Even in the YouTube debates, it is NOT the first 20 questions sent to CNN that get selected. The questions selected are those that meet the producers' pre-determined 'story arc' of the debate. All of the debates are done this way. Is this a surprise to anyone? Hell-ooo???

Wow, on top of the outright conservative Republican bias of Wolf Blitzer and John Roberts on display this really takes the cake. Let's close with a stupid question so we can really be just like FOX NEWS.

Isn't it cute that an "Truman Scholarship finalist" thinks that The Economist and the New York Times are INDEPENDENT news sources?

It was not UNLV, it was the Democratic Party of Nevada who gave out the tickets and many were given to DLC-type friends of a party leader. Still, Nevada Democrats have polled over 50% pro-Hillary so except for the rudeness no surprise it was a pro-Hillary crowd.

This was a horrible showing by CNN. The worst part was to have Gergen, JC Watts - two Republicans crowning Hillary as the Debate winner.
And also James Carville who is a close friend of the Clintons. Having Hillary as the nominee is a Republican Dream. They are very afraid of Edwards and Obama.

And all this after CNN itself ragged on Hillary when her staffer planted questions at a rally in Iowa. Silly, silly CNN.

To paraphrase Michael Scott from last night;s episode of The Office:

You know you're gonna get lied to by politicians, but not by journalists.

Or at least, in a sane world you wouldn't.

Another planted question designed to make Clinton look good.

Huh? Wasn't it a little demeaning to ask that of the only female candidate? Doesn't that question serve to trivialize her as a politician? It also seems like a variation on the boxers or briefs question Bill got (back then these kinds of questions were asked on MTV, now they are in CNN debates). Not sure if that was their intent in selecting it, but if people made that connection it would again diminish her as a candidate by treating her candidacy as if Bill is running again, which we know the media loves to do. Maybe I'm reading too much into it though...

wait, so her 2nd question was about diamonds/pearls?
she was a truman finalist, and if she didn't get to ask the yucca question, she was gonna ask about diamonds and pearls?
i don't feel bad for this girl at all.

Not that I'm one to defend CNN (who did a horrible job with this debate), but really...did she HAVE to ask ANY question? In other words, couldn't she have refused? Saying you were forced to ask a question you didn't want to strikes me as a bit lame.

UNLV gave the tickets out in a lottery style to students, faculty, & staff. The information that they collected would not have pointed them towards who might be Clinton supporters. I and several of my colleagues won tickets. I am actually registered Republican and have no preferences on any of the candidates (Rep. or Dem.) at this time.

Being there in person, the town hall questions were definitely staged. Even if the the student tried to ask her original question, she would have been cut off because they were out of time. That, or the correspondent would have added something outlandish on the end of it anyway, like the abortion question.

The student should not have done what CNN wanted. You will always be slaves as long as you are willing to be slaves.

The MSM belongs to 7 Jews, why help the enemy of the human race?

She should have asked her question, then we all could have seen how Leslie and Suzanne treated these supposed real people questions. She would have done us all a great service, either she got her question addressed, or they cut her off just like Bill-O does.

Don't hate the girl, just very disappointed. When she asked the question I just sat there and thought, boy she really made somebody proud with that question. Bet Daddy's thrilled with all of his hard earned money going to her college education, eh.

I love the Chess Clock debate. The reporters and moderators all suck beyond belief, well, not really, I expect them to suck, and they don't disappoint. Glad the Candidates pushed back some, wish they'd do it more and harder. What, Leslie isn't going to cover the Democratic campaign? CNN going to pass on all of those campaign dollars for commercials, seeing as how the Dems have most of the money?

Sadly, a chess clock would be as unfamiliar to most of the Democrats as the game of chess itself.

Hillary supporters are rude people, what difference does it make who distributed the tickets. It didn't matter how many supporters of each candidate showed up, Hillary's group of supporters were the loudest and the most rude at inappropiate times during the evening. They should have been shown the door. Improper behavior should not have been tolerated in this type of forum.

Yes the gender card was played again, in asking that stupid question, and Hillary's answer was playing to the female audience. No Hillary, I do not like you any better, pandering is unbecoming for all candidates especially to women.

As for nuclear waste, and where it should go, Nevada, made the waste, so it should be kept in Nevada. Every state in this country has it's own
garbage problems. The people making the decisions as to where to send their garbage, seem to feel free in deciding to send their garbage to poor rural areas of the country, okay to poison the poor people, not the rich. Nevada is a man made state. If the state is not fit for people to live, close the state and declare it inhabitable, please don't send your waste to any other part of this country. By the way ms. Luisa, no one can make you say or do anything you don't want to, you
obliged CNN because you wanted to be on television.

MSNBC and Russert is pro Obama and pro Edwards, Fox news is pro Giuliani and the GOP.
I`m happy to hear CNN was pro Hillary.
This girl wants her 20 minutes of fame.

CNN has chosen HRC as their candidate and FOX has chosen Ghouliani as their candidate.

Gee, thanks for narrowing the choices. All that brain activity that would have went to critical thinking about the candidates can now be put to more creative means, like shopping or reading about the blonde bimbo of the week.

NEWSFLASH: CNN and FOX are reporting that Britney Spears and OJ Simpson have a "love" child. OMG!!!!!!!

Look, this girl, while she may be bright, was in a high-pressure and tough spot, with producers from a huge network telling her what to do on a moment's notice. I don't fault the young woman at all.

And to the above poster who wrote about Campbell Brown...Brown is married to former Viceroy of Iraq, Paul Bremer's spokesnoodle, Dan Senor. Senor is now an advisor to the Romney campaign.

The conflicts of interest with Carville and Brown arise not from their relationships to candidates, but from the fact that neither Carville nor Brown nor CNN disclose any of the relationships.

Great and interesting comments about the Debate from this site. We should be glad that the questions of Diamonds or Pearls wasn't asked to one of the male candidates. Sometimes it's hard for people to see a qualified strong woman who can do as other female Presidents around the world do and that is stand up for truth. Americans honor their Mothers and hold them to the highest esteem but would want an idiot, drunk, druggie who steals and lies for President of the United States. Our country is in the worse shape it's ever been in with the weak lying President who American picked twice. If Hillary is attacked because she's a woman but best qualifed what do you think will happen if Senator Obama is picked. Look for the racist to come out strong and maybe bring back the real history of America and use RACE as their tool. We have seen the GOP use God and it worked next will be Women/Race to get another corrupt GOP in office. The Supreme Court is lined up to do what they are told. The GOP doesn't have to worry about the only Black Justice anymore. Yes Justice Thomas is totally insane and see DEAD PEOPLE. The rest of the 5 paid Justices are just looking for more oil shares to do as their told.

Further, I have to wonder if perhaps John Roberts and CNN didn't perhaps steal the young lady's question on Yucca Mountain.

Does anyone else remember the "Mac or PC" question from Boston in late '03 during another CNN Dem debate? There's a history of silly Q's like this.

But most of the format was fine, so it's no big deal.

http://www.political-buzz.com/

CNN did a terrible job:

Dobbs mocks dems prior to debate.
12 minutes of nothing as we wait the first question.
Gotcha questions with little time allowed for policy explanations.
Allowing the audience to boo was poor form.
Allowing the audience to applaud was a mistake.
Malveaux ruins audience questions with gotcha gotcha.
Campbell Brown gifts HRC with gender junk.
Diamonds or Pearls???? very embarassing.
Then cap it off with HRC supporters: Carville and Gergan??

CNN sucked last night.

The booing of Obama and Edwards whenever they criticized Clinton was beyond offensive and disrespectful. Clinton would have won my respect if she had interrupted the booing and called for the audience to be respectful of all the candidates, because each of them is strong enough to stand up for themselves. But, of course, she didn't, because she was gaining from the boos. Her silence was sad and tacky.

Personally, I think the young woman should have gone ahead and asked the question she wanted to ask. Sadly, we've seen what happens to folks who ask politically incorrect questions to politicians: they get zapped with tasers. It's time for this new generation to simply break the rules and make some noise. There's not much left to lose.

Who moderated them Lincoln-Douglas debates?

We've got that moron Campbell Brown asking about the "boys club" comment that was covered and explained ad nauseam for about a week.
That is all she could some up with?

Hilary should have said, "Women are sometimes, because of their inane questions, forced to prove themselves beyond what a man would"

Don't ever forget, folks, that CNN is the Clinton News Network. Slick Hillary and her husband, Honest Bill, are darlings of the Party of the Ass as well as the mainsteam media. They share impressive JD (from Yale) and BS degrees, as well as AHKH - all horsemen knew her.

Said Luisa: "So, if you want to read about real issues important to America--and the whole world, I suggest you pick up a copy of the Economist or the New York Times or some other independent source." Yikes. Economist and NYT "independent"? Not part of "the media"?? Next time, Maria Luisa, please advise people to skip those rags and read the internet. Start with http://www.whatreallyhappened.com 15 minutes a day every day for a month.

If we're getting this much mess while Hillary is just campaigning to be president, then how much will we get if she's elected? People have to be really self destructive to even consider Ms. Clinton for an important job as this. If they are this self destructive then they should never ever complain about all the destructive things that go on in the world today because they contribute to them.

The Clinton News Network strikes again.

Lord, why don't the parties just produce their own damned debate, and post the video on YouTube?

Then the party could choose decent moderators interested in good discussion, not some moron like Blitzer or Matthews or Russert.

Maybe the Dems could get Jeremy Paxson in from the BBC to moderate.

If she'd asked the question anyway they'd have cut it out or covered it up. They always have/always will.

Personally feel a little sorry for Maria Luisa. Seems like as nice person, if the clip is any indication. Seems pleased to be asking her question, and HRC seems pleased to be getting a softball. Maria Luisa certainly didn't realize what she was in for. Lots of disgruntled people on the internet, leading miserable pointless lives.

She should have asked the Yucca question anyway and just gotten removed from the stage.

Don't tase me bro!

College students mature brains are still forming - recent evidence suggests human brains don't fully mature until mid-twenties. We can give her a pass about the second question perhaps, but not CNN.

Too bad they didn't have time for the Obama question -- "Watermelon or fried chicken?"

"Diamonds vs. pearls"! Do you think they would have pulled that on a male student?

C'mon, folks--if the student had begun asking the Yucca Mt. question, Blitzer would have cut her off. Nicely, I'm sure, but she would not have been allowed to continue. Something along the line of this has already been covered. So, thank you, candidates, UNLV, etc. and it's a wrap.

Having gone through many perfected versions of conversations, questions, after the fact, I feel so much for this young woman.

Let it drop. And at least she got this information into the blogosphere and now has a reply from CNN confirming her story--pretty damn cool, if you ask me!

Oh, and as many have thought up already, Blitzer damn well better ask this question of Rudy!

Now I'm glad I didn't watch this one. I'm a former Democrat who has decided to vote for Ron Paul. I can't see anyone else on either side who really has a sense of what's going on.

Just to clear up the ticket distribution confusion. UNLV was allotted 450 seats for students/faculty. These were distributed via a lottery(1,400 students entered). The venue it was held in seats around 3k.

Wow, people are blaming a 15 year old girl for doing what the producers asked her to do on live tv? I thought liberalism included sympathy and understanding. Some of you guys really suck and should be ashamed of yourselves.

BTW: this wasn't her "second question", all questioners were asked to include a "fun question". This was her fun question and CNN chose it.

Did anyone notice that Clinton managed to avoid taking a position on the pearls vs. diamond question? Her answer was "I like both".

The comments about the audience for the debate being stacked in favor of Clinton are simply not true. UNLV was given half the seats, which were distributed via a lottery system open to faculty, staff, and students. The only information collected at the time people registered for the lottery was name, DOB, and email address; people didn't even have to specify political affiliation, so the pool was open to anyone: Democrats, Independents and interested Republicans. So, please, folks get your facts straight!

I attended the debate. I applauded answers I liked, rolled my eyes at moments of canned evasion, and, yes, even booed Edwards when he lumped Clinton in with the neocons, which I thought was a petty, low blow. Why are people so outraged that the audience reacted to the candidates' responses through applause or--gasp--even boos? You all need to get a thicker skin and revist the idea of what a participatory democracry is all about!

The final question of the evening was indeed lame and embarrasing, and I was infuriated that "pearls or diamonds" was the note on which the debate ended, once again pointing to how impossible it is for Clinton to escape the "gender issue." Campbell Brown, for her role in making Clinton's gender as much of a focus as she did, would be well advised to take a gender studies course.

In the end, I place the blame on CNN. Overall, they did a terrible job running the debate, from start to finish. Wolf Blitzer was an inffective moderator, and Campbell Brown's questions were anything but hard-hitting and substantive.

Do we have to suffer through five more CNN debates?

CNN didn't even mount a poll after the debate. They declared winners. Keith Olbermann gave the debate he handled far more gravitas.

Blitzer and Brown sounded like Clinton campaign PR flacks.

Get a load of the YouTube David Sirota cooked up overnight to diss Hillary's NAFTA response. Skim the US portion of the Economic Report he cites. A lot of the comments are interesting and informative as well.
Click on the "Politics West" link in this post, not on the video itself.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/11/16/david-sirota-on-hillarys-response-to-nafta-at-the-democratic-debate/

It was like the Disnified WWF presentation of presidential hopefuls.

This election sucks. Too shiny, too managed, too "American Idol" for me.

I Forgot "too much like a reality show." Who wants to marry a President?

Only another president of course

I emailed Wolfie this morning & told him it was the worst debate ever, if you want to call it a debate. Campbell Brown's husband was in Iraq with Bremer. They're the ones that really screwed up Iraq by dissolving the Iraqi army.

I used to like Carville & Begala, but can't stand them anymore. Same for David Gergen.

Senator Obama was terrific. Hillary looked like they plastered the makeup on her a couple inches too thick.

I feel sorry for the student, having worked hard to have a decent question and ending up with a question that should never ever been asked, ever!

I feel even more sorry for the American electorate after last night's debacle. It stands out as the worst "debate" to date
--the moderator lost control of the situation from the first question,
--the questions were mostly pap,
--the constant reassurances that "we have plenty of time" only highlighted the ultimate total lack of even-handedness in time distribution even among the top candidates (Obama: 18 minutes, Clinton: 16; Richardson: 14; Edwards: 10)
--the scripted questions and interference from the "journalists" (see in particular Campbell Brown's interjection of abortion into the valid question about what quality a candidate would seek in Supreme Court justices)

The media is making an absolutely mockery out of the political process in this country, turning it into the worst of infotainment. The desire by CNN to script the questions was blatant even before this student wrote the first word on her MySpace page.

I don't know what the answer is to the total disregard for open and honest debate of serious issues by CNN and other media outlets. But if I were anyone other than a committed political junkie and last night was the first time I'd tuned into this election, I would have turned off the TV and decided to check back in around Wednesday, November 5, 2008 for the results.

The one thing I did notice. The whole crowd cheered loudly when Dennis said IMPEACHMENT NOW!!!!

All of the above is MOOT> Who in the HELL would EVEN consider this criminal for the Presidency?? Are you people totally brainwashed?

I thought it was ironic that Campbell Brown asked Hillary the "gender card" question when she had to know that the "Diamonds or Pearls" question was coming up. The media has a double standard. Hillary is not supposed to play the "gender" card, but the media is allowed to give her stupid, girly questions. How was she supposed to answer that stupidity?

Teresa, you hit the nail right on the head re: the media's double standard about how Clinton's gender is or is not supposed to factor in all of this. She is caught between a rock and a hard place, and clearly, that's exactly where the media are going to keep her. I wish everyone would wake up and realize that ALL the candidates possess a gender; it's just that masculinity is so thoroughly connected to mainstream politics that most people cannot even see the way in which it operates. I am disgusted.

With the current candidates on both sides, we are in major trouble in this country. If this bunch of clowns is the best that we can do, we are in need of a national enema! Ron Paul at least knows of the plans to destroy our sovereignty by the globalist cabal, and addresses the issue as the rest of American either has an Ipod in their face, or are resting comfortably, thinking that everything is just fine. Ron Paul is not perfect either, but we sure have some sorry choices to attempt to get us out of a mess unlike any other this country has ever faced since it's inception.

If Hillary Clinton is the democratic "front-runner", we are in major trouble indeed. No
executive experience whatsoever, no real positions that she will take except to cater to every special interest group and the corporate globalist's needs.
She is obviously the network's choice for the oval
office, and that is a scary thought as well.

If these are the best candidates we as a people can produce, we are failing miserably.

With the last three administrations, in office who
all have done so much damage to our nation, we need REAL leadership to address the crucial issues
of our time. Clowns just won't get the job done folks! I know plumbers and truck drivers that can
out think this batch of political nightmares!
It is no longer acceptable to vote for the lesser
of two evils, or vote for someone that is
"electable" (the news media's new tactic to get
you to fall in line with the two corrupt parties).

Both parties have failed their constituents miserably! Our nation has been destroyed by the two parties in one fashion or another. We should by all respects have a dozen parties and not just
two corrupt one's to choose from. It is a sorry
state of affairs, when all you have is corrupt A
or corrupt B to choose from. Tisk tisk tisk.

Don't let the media choose your candidate for you!
Do not fall into the "you are just wasting your
vote" fallacy! Vote YOUR way, for YOUR reasons!

With these candidates, we are surely doomed!

If these are our sharpest tools in the shed, we
need to go tool shopping folks!

She was probably stunned by Hillary licking her lips and starring deeply into her eye's (probably wondering how sweet she would taste), so she didn't have the will to ask her own question. Just what America needs, more pre-planned criminals running the Whitehouse. Didn't Billy-bum-jammers wife feel any shame the first time her husband got nailed? After all, the guy was impeached, wasn't he?

Guess being a jerk-off is a good thing in America.

I attended, in the UNLV section--what previous UNLV posters have said is right on--I'll merely add that, while the booing seemed to me to come from the other side of the hall, and was by no means pervasive, it was noticable that almost nobody applauded those attacks. people applauded most loudly at lines that went after Bush....it seems to me that unless Obama and Edwards can find a way to attack Hillary that dosen't allow them to be made to look angry/unfair, they are doomed--& this won't be easy.

oh, and Blitzer is an absolute buffoon: since when do you read "forcing a bunch of people to answer reductive context-free yes/no questions" when you look up "debate" in the dictionary?

I am disappointed that CNN which was once a respectable news agency has allowed itself to fall into the pits with Rupert Murdock.

I am also insulted that Hillary's clan would insult women voters with the Diamonds and pearls. They did the unthinkable with asking the 'airhead' question as if women couldn't possibly care about or understand politics. Hey, she even insulted herself with that one. And, BTW, Hillary, don't whine and claim you didn't have anything to do with it. Of course, you didn't directly, but you knew basically what was going on or your campaign is out of control. How can you expect us to believe you can run the country if you can't run your own campaign.

One other thing that has been ticking me off lately. Everytime I listen to Hillary her years of 'experience' grows. Well, this is all news to me because I didn't know that the 'wife of' status was something you could count under experience. So, then are you saying that if my husband is the CEO of a major company I can then start applying for CEO jobs because of the experience I gained as 'marital experience'? That is dumber than dumb! She was only the 'wife of' the governor of Arkansas and the 'wife of' the President of the United States. Now if she wants to haul out her 'experience' with the Health Care Proposals in 1997, I'll have to remind her she failed miserably and if she had succeeded, we would have health care today.

Also, I remember when Hillary and Bill arrived in Washington and she wore the rag around her hair looking like the country bumpkin or something. She promptly insulted all country music fans by insulting the Queen of Country Tammy Wynette. She was defending Bill and saying he didn't 'fool around' and she got a bit boisterous and said 'I ain't no little Tammy Wynette standing by my man.' which proved to be wrong too. She even knew already that he was so she was simply lying then.

When will people realize that politics, the MSM, Congress, etc., is all phony and not here for we the people, but for the corporate interests of the elites and globalists. The bankers issue and control OUR money, which is against what the Constitution states! ONLY Congress has the right, yet the criminal system we live in continues to allow this horrific act to continue. Unless Ron Paul or Mike Gravel is "elected", America will become part of the North American Union, thus obliterating not only her history, but the rest of our rights, freedoms, and privledges! The world truly is a matrix of sorts.

CNN (Clinton News Network)

I think that her question was an embarrassment to the university. To think that an educated person, would sit down and allow for someone to censor her, it is outrageous. When that mic is on, you can say anything you want. She will never live this down, and will never again, have the chance to ask a question to world leaders in this format again.

Did they tase her, bro?

When I heard the "Pearl and diamond" question I immediately thought it was planted in order to lighten things up. Surely that question would make it appear that questions are not planted or screened, yet we see it was!

I watched the Spin Room after the debate, it was clear and obvious the whole debate was focused on Obama and Hillary. Edwards is a smuck. Dodd was pretty solid but the libs are putting the most "votable" in front.

Would they have tazered her had she ask another question?

They don't call it the Clinton News Network (CNN) for nothing.

Why did any of you assume CNN or FOX was unbiased?

Of course this was scripted. Look at the time left. Not a question asked with any permissible time for redress by any other candidate. Does any serious viewer really question the posing and answer of her last question???> (If not, please lie down and do not vote - except what crayon best fits the #2 spot on that drawing)

Especially given many news' sources claiming that "Wolf Blitzer" (nice name - how much did it cost?) was going to come on hard, only to woos out.

H. Clinton is as bad as G. Bush. Learn and move on. Or . . . . get the same.

Well of course the questions are planted. Wouldn't want the big bad peasants to hurt itty bitty Hilliary's feelings, now would we?

Seriously, 25 years of the two family rule (Bush/Clinton) is enough. I don't care who you vote for, but enough of the monarchy.

Come on those of you who are giving her a hard time. Have you not read the book about what they did to Kathleen Willy? Or to Vince Foster?

The Clintons are part of the new mafia cross them and die.

The Clintons excel in debates or interviews where they control every aspect of the event. Pre-approved questions with focus grouped answers always play well with their easily-impressed base. This makes Hillary nothing more than a marginally talented actress with full scale MSM support.

It's like saying Britney Spears is the world's greatest singer because she's so well marketed that her albums always sell.

If you're voting for Hillary, you're the world's biggest VOM. You are also tone deaf.

the Yucca Mountain question was equally stupid

who cares about nuclear waste, just ship it to Zimbabwe

If this young lady believes the New York Times isn't just as biased and untrustworthy as CNN, she needs to get a new perspective.

So glad I read this. During the debate I said out loud to my husband, "There is no way, our girls are going to UNLV". CNN rigged this one big time. And the Clinton camp set it up with the fake warning on Drudge as if they and CNN are totally independent of each other. We're still with you Barack!

This incident doesn't surprise me. CNN was the same network that selectively edited comments from pro wrestler John Cena to falsely imply an acknowledgment of steroid use. It's shameful how a former bastion of legitimate journalism has stooped to such tactics.

No follow up on Hillary's driver license for illegals flip-flop from last debate? Very weak, Wolf.

As for the student, how about a better spare question, with a little teeth to it?

Hillary will lose, anyway.

"College students mature brains are still forming - recent evidence suggests human brains don't fully mature until mid-twenties. We can give her a pass about the second question perhaps, but not CNN."

Glad she wasn't with us at Berkley in the 60s.

What stopped this girl to ask the question she really wanted once she was "live" on the mike??
