If Huckabee gets the nomination, it will show that it's useless to speculate about fundraising or start campaigning in early January. Look, Huckabee is not even campaigning in South Carolina and a new poll released today has him at 18% in that state, up 13% in one month and in a statistical tie with Mitt and Rudy!!!
Does Huckabee even ahve to worry with Romney choking at the debate and Chuck Norris suppoorting him? Okay...so maybe it's not actually in the bag, but Huck does have some (cheap, apparently) momentum. http://www.political-buzz.com/
There's no enthusiasm at all on the ground for any of the four "top tier" -- Romney, Giuliani, McCain, and Thompson. None. For Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee, there is enthusiasm. So, if you have real supporters, you are "second-tier." If your only supporters are the corrupt press, pollsters, and party establishment, you are "first tier," even though no one likes you. It's all transparently corrupt, and more people are seeing through it, and it's all about to get swept away. Ron Paul 2008.
Mittster only knows one thing and that is how to buy votes by spending his zillions in an attempt to erase all of his flipflops.
Huckabee has only spent that much because he doesn't have anymore cash! It's not like he's The Good Doctor Ron Paul who is swimming with cash this quarter... If Huckabee had more, he'd spend more... they all do it
Like Huckabee HAD any money to spend in the first place! It's hardly a virtue to be so frugal when there isn't any other option, eh? However, lets not forget the “unquantifiable costs” of Huck’s persistant free media love or the LOADS of dough that the Fair Tax group paid to bring in thousands of people to the Ames Straw Poll to vote for Huck (the Johnny come lately to the cause). Actually, the Fair Tax people are out of money and won’t be spending anything on GOTV efforts in the Iowa Caucus. That’s a blow to Huckabee.
Tyler (comment #1) So Huckabee's a "fiscal conservative" because he can't raise money? Is he holding onto a war chest and doling it out slowly and methodically? Nice try pal. If you got the money, it's stupid not to spend it.
Jeff: It has nothing to do with not having raised money. It's the fact that he has made a lot out of nothing. The starve the beast theory of fiscal conservatism is the government will adjust and actually function better if you make it operate on less. Huckabee had little to function on and look what he has done with it compared to Romney.
As someone who did not originally support Huckabee, I am inspired by the fact that he is doing so well in spite of having raised so little money (at least through the third quarter of this year), or having so little establishment Republican OR conservative movement support. I've always appreciated outsiders, and an evangelical Christian outsider is doubly appealing to me. I hope he continues to do well in this contest, and show that evangelicals cannot be taken for granted.
The Newshour tonight pointed that evangelicals have typically represented roughly 1/4 of the Iowa caucus vote. It's quite logical that they'd support the Baptist minister, especially given the divorces of Rudy, McCain, and Thompson and the Mormonism of Mitt.
Huckabee is campaigning for the VP slot on Giuliani's ticket. A vote for Huck is a vote for Rudy.
Very few, and I mean from the Government down to the 11-yr kid with a paper route, know how to manage money. We all have been educated by a Mastercard-way-of-thinking..."It's looks good on you. You deserve it. Buy it now and pay for it later." What ever happened to saving for it? What ever happened to going without it? What ever happen to realising you don't need it? Look at our country. We have abused it and are NOW paying for it! Because Huckabee's work is above and beyond common comforts the world/money can offer, He appeals to people who know that there's a life greater then the next big screen TV, beach vacation or sports car. He admits to sleeping three to a hotel room and eating PBJ's during this campaign. And here I have friends who think that staying in a hotel with less than 4 stars is suffering. Urgggg! I'm ready to support a Veggiematic Goverment that cuts, slices and dices the insignificant and stifling "stuff" OUT! Managing money is not for the weak. It takes a special constitution of CHARACTER knowing, that going without the fluffy and comfortable quick pay-off solution will most likely position us for a better future. Huckabee knows and Lives Just That! About The Stuff in our Lives.... The more "Stuff" we have, the more "Stuff" we have to take care of. The more "Stuff" we have to take care of, the less time we have to pay attention to what is so very precious...Life.
Huckabee is low on cash. Can't he go out and fundraise like Mitt Romney does?
Snerk! Talk about being cost-effective considering Huck is running ahead right now in the polls. And Romney maybe shouldn't have spent so much time dissing Massachusetts. Wonder how many people thought: "if he hated it so much, why in the heck did he run for governer there? Where's the respect for your state?"
I would expect Iowans to reject Romney for being a Mormon. Why? 70% of them approve of Bush. It's no wonder why Huckabee won, he appeals to the old nutty hardcore christians. I would love the state if the youth stayed there because they have the highest SAT & ACT scores in the country. But they leave! They know their parents are crazy! Iowa has a huge brain drain problem. Read up on it. Ron Paul will help our children's educational future because government won't be involved in what they learn. At least not the federal government. State and local only.
i hope you win mike!!!

If I were Huckabee I'd be spouting this difference in funds every chance I got, as a contrast in "fiscal conservatism." He could claim he has the same polls numbers with less than 5% of Romney's expenditures. And Romney can't claim Huckabee has the same national ID recognition as McCain or Rudy, as a reason for his vast difference in spending.
