Huckabee: All Hands On Deck In Iowa

08 Nov 2007 08:34 am

Ex-AR Gov. Mike Huckabee will spend most of the next 65 days in Iowa and has moved the majority of his staff to the state in an effort to capitalize on a sense that he's gaining ground here.

Here's excerpts of an interview I conducted with Huckabee last night. He opines on Fred Thompson calling him a liberal, Pat Robertson, and a new generation of evangelicals:

A wise old hand told me today that Iowa was down to Romney and Huckabee. Do you see it that way?

“Well, I certainly think even the Iowa poll numbers are reflecting that we’re in play in a very strong way and continue to move up and other candidates have stalled and are beginning to decline. I think we’re in great position there.”

But to win, you’ve got to drive people to the polls. How are you going to do it? What’s your secret weapon?

“We’re hoping to do what we essentially did with the straw poll, just doing it on steroids. We know we’ve got to get physical bodies that so committed to us no matter how cold the temperature is… no matter how good the Orange Bowl is…. Among those caucus goers who have already made up their mind, we’re in first place.. what we’re doing now is to go down to the precinct level, recruiting chairman in the precincts, getting precincts townships, counties.. We’re developing our efforts where the concentration of voters is likely o be highest…

Pat Robertson cited Giuliani’s aggressive posture against radical Islam as the primary reason why he endorsed him. Is there a strain of eschatology in this? Christianity versus Islam – with Giuliani providing the secular response?

“I honestly don’t know. And I am at a loss to explain that endorsement. It probably caught Rudy off guard.”

Did you meet with Robertson?

“I’ve talked with him on the phone and months and months ago. It was due to a mutual friend who urged me to give him a call., I think it was back last December… it’s been quite some time ago… I never had an indication that he was going to make an endorsement of me or anyone else for that matter… I’d rather have followers than just have him.”

Fred Thompson said today you were pro-life… and a liberal on everything else.

“Let’s face it.. the Writers' Guild is on strike and Fred is kind of struggling to get some lines..whoever put that line together is writing for comedy and not for a serious political drama…

The Club for Growth… folks at the Family Research Council… a lot of the conservative establishment seems to be uncomfortable with you. Is part of it because you’re too independent? You’re not going to be beholden to them?

“I do think that’s part of it. [I’m not] a wholly owned subsidiary of anybody. I take that as a compliment. Also, there’s a new generation of leaders who are thinking that there are issues we’ve got to address that I’m addressing… we’re getting a lot of support from people who haven’t been so involved in political affairs in the past… they’re not the names that [people say] oh, yeah, he’s the big guy, but there are people who are emerging as a new generation of leaders who are interested in life issues and the sanctity of life, yes, but who have an interest in poverty, hunger… there’s a much broader agenda. …

As you travel through Iowa, is there any particular issue that people bring up with regularity that the national media isn’t really paying attention to?

“The underlying thing is sort of a [desire for] authenticity and consistency… that’s what people are really clued in on. Whatever I say, they want to know – is this a position you’ve just adopted, or is this what you really believe… does it pass the smell test of believability… ?. As far as a specific issue.. it’s going to be immigration…

You’re going to spend most of your time in Iowa from now on, I presume.

For the most part, I’m going to be in Iowa from now through January. Even the Little Rock staff is up here, if not permanently, for part of the time.

Huck as the Preacher in Chief?
His platform is beyond belief,
With fed sales tax
immigration that's lax
The economy goes back to sleep.

I really do like this man. He does appeal to the younger evangelicals (of which I am one). He has a proven track record of strong and consistent leadership. He will shake up what's wrong in Washington and replace it with what's right, if the people stand behind him (against a corrupted establishment). His ideas are radical and common-sense at the same time. I will rejoice if he is our next president. Learn who this man really is and what he believes (www.mikehuckabee.com). I think the majority of Americans of all parties will support him and stand behind, if they come to know him.

If you believe in Mike Huckabee's message, I urge you to visit www.abuckforhuck.com and take my challenge.

The voters of this great nation must stand up for their beliefs and support the candidate that is best capable of representing them.

I'm inclined to like him too. Seems very authentic and trustworthy. The fact that establishment Washington insiders are attacking him so vehemently can only mean good things to 'Joe American' living in 'Fly-over country'. I think I'm going to check him out a little more on his website. I understand he's got quite a grassroots campaign going too. Anyone know more about that?

This could be the first time in modern history that republicans choose a non-establishment candidate. Governor Huckabee could bring us into the post establishment era. Imagine a president who accounts to the country not the Party--sounds awfully refreshing!

Huckabee is the most Conservative member of the Christain Left.

There is a very large, very loud and very powerful group of voters on the right that will not let Huckabee and his tax and spend, pro-illegal immigration ways anywhere near the White House.

That's interesting mis-information from the poster, Carolina. He's not a tax and spend liberal and he's been very clear in his opposition of illegal immigration. It doesn't take much research to find out the truth regarding his position on the issues. I reject the outrageous accusations made by the "establishment" and I choose Governor Huckabee.

No "powerful group" can stop a candidate that is the choice of the people. That was one of the key points made by Governor Huckabee.

Carolina, you really shouldn't parrot the baseless charges leveled against Huckabee. Seriously, please go to Huckabee's website or any of several other sites that more than adequately refute these attacks. A Thompson supporter challenged me to go to Fred's website to find out that he had not lobbied for a pro-abortion group. So far I haven't really seen that claim refuted, but I did look for myself. Thanks.

Did you really use the word "eschatology" in an interview? Was it in person? Did he look at you funny?

If Huckabee was a free-trader and a convincing economic conservative (which he could be without abandoning his populist rhetoric--the two are not mutually exclusive), then he would be an ideal Republican candidate.

I'm just waiting for him to say that he would run the country different than he ran Arkansas and to hire a Milton Friedman school economics advisor.

I really wish people would do some research on Mike Huckabee and learn the truth, instead of leveling charges that can not be backed up. His record in Arkansas can stand on it's own merit with no problem. I work in Arkansas and almost every person I talk to thinks he did a fine job.

As far as him being a tax and spend liberal, that is just plain false. Of the two major tax increases that happened while he was in office, one was approved by over 80% of the people to help improve their roads and the other was mandated by the Arkansas State Supreme Court to improve school funding.

To answer T. Gadbot's question, Huckabee is the first and only political candidate, local or national, I have ever sent a financial contribution to - by the way, I am a regular "Joe." I REALLY feel compelled in the heart to help this guy make it to the White House or at least on the ticket. GOD speed, Mike!

Ditto that last comment! Me too!

I have to admit, I'm starting to like Huckabee. I do like Romney to an extent, but I think I trust Huckabee more. He seems so genuine and not controlled by the big establishments.

Huckabee's support of the Fair Tax is the best hope we will ever have of getting rid of the IRS. Please go to www.fairtax.org to see what the Fair Tax can do for you and your family! and please contribute to help put the only true conservative in the White House @
www.mikehuckabee.com

I think Mike's support of the Fair Tax should help with getting fiscal conservative support. It proposes getting rid of all income taxes for individuals AND corporations. (no capital gains, no inheritance tax, etc.) That would breathe some vibrant life into our markets and make our products much more competitive globally.

There is something Lincolnesque about Mike Huckabee. From humble origins to fundamental values to broad visionary thinking, he could be just the man to lead this troubled nation. He is a man of the people, not the establishment, and it is up to us to provide the financial support that others obtained by joining forces with big money. Please support him generously.

If Mike Huckabee takes Iowa it will propel him to the nomination for President. Many critics and pundits are now realizing this - just ask Bill Kristol of the National Review or Dick Morris of Fox News. Huckabee will smash Hillary!

Pat Robertson can go sell insurance!

When I listen to Huckabee on U-Tube, the debates, or other stump speeches, he is obviously a man without need of a script. His own ideas give him momentum. That said, he seems to be quite a good listener, as well; now that's refreshing! His record in Arkansas is noteworthy, voted among the top 5 governors in the nation. As for lack of foreign policy experience, well... name someone who came to the White House who did? FDR? JFK? Reagan? Clinton? Ask Huckabee about some obscure detail in Middle -East history, you'd be surprised at his breadth of knowledge. Not really much to say about his liberal tax-n-spend policies… do some earnest digging and you’ll find Huckabee has been anything but liberal. I don’t think he’s perfect, but he’s got the needed goods!

I have read every article I could find in newspapers, online and listened to anyone that talked about Mike Huckabee. I watched all the video I could find. I started my search with the Glenn Beck/Mike Huckabee video. When I had done all this I was sold on the future President Mike Huckabee. I was dispondent before this because there was no one to vote for that reflected my view of the world. I found Mike and my vote is his. I hope you'll check him out. www.mikehuckabee.com

Huckabee THINKS... and he practices what he preaches! My response to an editorial earlier today...

"Those who have spent time in Asia must certainly appreciate Huckabee's ability to "look upstream." Despite our lower test scores in math, our country is known through Asia as being "smart." Our international reputation for being "smart" has to do with our creativity, not the number at the top of the page on a math test. The arts foster creativity.

I personally benefit daily from the brainchild of few college dropouts that did not have their creativity suppressed. Thankfully, those such as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were interested in more than test scores in math and science.

Huckabee's understanding of education is not surprising, since he is also looking upstream in health care/ cancer issues. The story of babies in the river comes to mind. We keep hearing about a plan that would allow us to rescue all of the babies floating down the river. Huckabee is asking us to look at why the babies are in the river in the first place. If we could prevent many of these babies from ending up in the river in the first place, we might well have the resources to rescue all in our current budget.

We are spending 25 percent more on health care than any other country on the planet, but don't make the top forty in life expectancy. We are fighting a "war" on cancer, but meanwhile our obesity rate is skyrocketing. Obesity is the cause of 20 percent of cancer deaths in women and 14 percent in men. We need to look at our waistlines. Huckabee also seems to understand that, and demonstrated it is possible in his own life. A candidate that not only wrote a book on how to remedy the second leading preventable cause of cancer, but even showed us it is possible in his own life. Now that is refreshing! Lynne Eldridge MD, Author, "Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time"

HUCKABEE IS A CANDIDATE WHO REALLY ANSWERS QUESTIONS, HE DOESN'T JUST GIVE THE PREREHERSED LINES OVER AND OVER. HE CAN DO THIS BECAUSE UNLIKE MOST CANDIDATES HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHO HE IS AND WHAT HE STANDS FOR, AND MAKES NO APOLOGIES FOR IT. HE HAS THE CONFIDENCE TO PRESENT HIMSELF IN OPEN HONESTY BEING FULLY WILLING TO EXCEPT WHATEVER THAT BRINGS.
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME CONTRIBUTING TO ANY PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN AS WELL, BECAUSE LIKE THE MANY OTHERS I HEARD AND NOW BELIEVE.

The old preacher once said, if the King James version of the Bible was good enough for the Apostle Paul, it's good enough for me.

I would say, "If Mike Huckabee is good enough for Chuck Norris, he's good enough for me."

As a Democrat who's not religious but admires the long-forgotten (in America) values that the historical Jesus actually talked about, I am just stunned by this man. Who'd have thought it - a conservative Christian who's actually *not* hostile to the things Jesus preached. He wants to help the poor and the sick and bring people together. Well, that may make him a shaky Republican, but it does make him a leader in my book.

Having always voted either Democrat or Green, I'm a bit chagrinned to admit this. But I would seriously consider voting for this guy in a general election (if Mitt Romney doesn't buy his way through all 50 states first).

Interesting comment by David Anderson who identified Mike Huckabee as "Lincolnesque." Lincoln had moral convictions with an honest unasuming confidence in the citizens of his day. America today needs to be challenged to rise above our moral panderings and re-embrace the virtue of our founding fathers. Mike Huckabee's vision sees clearly the trail blazed by couragous Americans who sought God's blessing on a nation patterned after His principles. May God grant us the grace to boldly stand for "right" in our day of moral decay.
