NRCC Uses Clinton Driver's License Answer To Thump Democrats

01 Nov 2007 12:11 pm

Writes the NRCC in a release:

Rep. Chris Murphy (CT-05) is bobbing and weaving on the issue of providing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. When asked about the issue, Murphy’s answer was reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s vague, yet troubling statement. On an issue as basic as providing legal documentation to individuals here in the country illegally, Murphy refused to take a stand.

I've previously thought the best chances the GOP had in the presidential election were 1) for the Democrats to nominate Hillary Clinton, and 2) to ignore foreign policy and focus on illegal immigration.

I never saw the confluence of the two playing out like this. For Clinton to step all over herself on this issue was a fairly sophomoric mistake, I think.

I'm still unclear about what exactly the mistake was...waffling on the issue, or kinda sorta might-be supporting Spitzer's plan?

I think the true mistake is trying to look tough on illegal immigration without being mindful of the unintended consequences of "being tough."

Six million unlicensed drivers? No thanks...
