On Mitt Romney and Immigration

21 Nov 2007 12:00 pm

An aide to Mitt Romney takes strong exception to this post about the purity of Republicans on immigration.

Even if Romney knew that the new governor was likely to overturn his order deputizing state troopers to detain illegal immigrants, it does not follow, the aide says, that Romney should not have done it.

"All that it takes for wrong decisions to prevail in this world is that good men do nothing. So if you know your successor is going to hike taxes, you shouldn’t sign a tax cut?"

Fair enough.

The point isn't that Romney didn't do what he says he did -- he did indeed provide for the deputization of some state police troopers to detain undocumented workers -- the point is that there is, to every gesture a back story, and one that involves the tangle of personal, political and policy motivations.

Romney's gubernatorial staff first began to negotiate with the federal government in June of 2006 ... it took a long time for the mechanics of the arrangement to be worked out. By June of 2006, Romney's had a tenth of his term to go. His campaign points out that he vetoed an in-state tuition bill for undocumented workers in 2004 and would have done so earlier had the legislature sent the bill to him earlier. And even earlier in his administration, he opposed a bill that would have granted driver's licenses to undocumented workers. His aides say that he wanted to negate the magnets that drew illegal immigrants to the sanctuary cities in his state, and he succeeded.

But I've spoken to Romney advisers and aides who served the governor during this period. Some are still with the governor's team, and others have moved on. (None is Mike Murphy, incidentally). They acknowledge that, by the middle of 2005, Romney was thinking pretty seriously about the possibility of a political life after the state house, that he was expanding his outreach to conservatives, that conservatives were listing illegal immigration as an issue of paramount concern, that Romney was encouraged by some of his advisers to summon some public intestinal fortitude on immigration, and that he was moved to take forward-leaning action toward the tail end of his term.

None of that obviates the fact that Romney did what he did. Grant Romney's supporters the concession that he's "tough on illegal immigration" now and was pretty consistently an enforcement-oriented governor. But grant his opponents the concession that while his policy instincts were always "correct" on the issue, he is a novitiate to the "tough" part of the equation. And 2008 politics may well be a reason why.

What gets me about his tough line on immigration that he uses to beat Giuliani and Huckabee over the head with came five years after that horrible day in September of 2001.

Romney -- incredibly -- singles out Giuliani in particular for immigration positions he held prior to 9/11, when immigration became a clear matter of national security. How is it that Romney spent three years in office after 9/11 without any concern for the issue of illegal immigration?

Romney has more stances than Sen Larry Craig has in the public restrooms.

Romney, the flipflopper, who now screams from rooftop about how illegal immigration is bad, once hired illegal immigrants to work on his lawn!! What a fraud Romney is.

The only person who has strong stance on this issue is Tancredo.

Romney and Rudy both allowed sancturary cities in MA and NY. In reality they both are liberals and not conservatives.

Utah, Wyoming, Texas, and Alaska have sanctuary cities. Are those governors liberals also?

Rudy didn't just allow the sanctuary city state of mind. He embraced and expanded it.

First, the illegals in the lawn reasoning is so idiotic. He checked the company out and did some due diligence, perhaps trusting too much that the company had its house in order, but all indications were that they did. If we stopped going to business that hire illegals we'd all be starving and cold. Only Mitt seems to get that you have to go after the company, create an economic incentive, for people to enforce the law.

Second, so what if people came to him and said "Immigration is a big issue" and he thought, "Hey, maybe we should look at immigration." I would hope that leaders in a democracy feel beholden to their constituencies. Sheesh

Finally, there's a big difference between a governor having cities, who have their own degree of "sovereignty," engaging in policies he disagrees with. It's another thing for a mayor to actively push a policy within his own area of control.

Romney folks here can defend him as much they want but it is crystal clear that:

* Romney has flipflopped

* Romney hired illegal immigrants for his lawn

* Romney did not do anything about the problem during the first 3.5 years as governor

And as Anthony pointed out above, Romney has more stances on issues than Senator Craig has in the bathroom.

Why is it that when a "journalist" puts something out on Romney that is for all intents a positive as a whole, turn on him in the same story and paint it as a negative in the end?

I believe that people in our country are so cynical and negative about other people that they have this, "they 'really' can't be this good or they 'really' can't have skeletons in his/her closet can they?" attitude towards him. People who do this also are guilty of things they're ashamed of in the past themselves. I guess it's not hard to think negatively as well about politics and politicians.

How hard is it to believe that there are still some however that truly believe what they believe or don't do what "everyone" does. Is it so bad that there are people in our midst who try and do the right thing no matter when it happened? Don't we want these kinds of people to lead us?

It's time to call things for what they are and stop trying to find the truth from behind a negative mind with perceived biases.

When you veto in state tuiton for illegals as Governor. And empower the state troopers to arrest illegals, Deny drivers licenses to them.

Your inforcing the law and making it hard for them. Gov Romney was toughest on illegals EXCEPT for Tancredo. Let's stop with the illegals on Lawn thing... If thats all you got, your reaching.

It was the contractors responsiblity to make sure he had honest workers. We need to rallying around the best Republican in this race and thats

Mitt Romney

I am not a Romney Folk, but I do see the most talented and quite frankly brillant candidate on either side of the aisle. Mitt Romney has accomplished so much in his life, he is at his prime. And your not going to support him because he has changed a few positions, he flip, but he never flopped. And he is Mormon. OH NO not a Mormon. Leave your religious bigotry and misinformation in the past.

The real question is, are we all willing to support the (R) nominee, even if he is not your guy...

Hillary's million ideas scare the crap out of me.

Do you recognize what it is going to take to bring the needed changes in Washington??? I am voting for Mitt Romney because he is anything but average. He is a leader at its highest level. You know in all truth I would be disappointed if Mitt Romney lost the election because of religious bigotry, (for I think that is what is causing him the most problem in this Primary election year) but much more disappointed if he turned from his religious beliefs like many suggest. Those kind of beliefs are the real heart of a person. Romney is clear about his faith based values of strengthening family, home, and country. Romney would serve our country better than any other candidate, but if he doesn't win this election....he still wins and remains on top with an outstanding family of his own, an amazing record of service to others and rich in personal character. He has plenty of this world's blessings to be comfortable for the remainder of his life. He doesn't need the job of President of the United States! Plus he has a religious knowledge that brings him peace and much happiness. This giant of a man cannot really ever be called a loser. The losers are going to be the citizens of this nation if we turn our back on the best prepared candidate for a President of the United States that we've seen in a long long time. What's in this for Mitt? He really doesn't need much to make his life complete. I think he of all men came into this political process because he thought he could give something back to America, a nation and homeland that he loves. At this Thanksgiving time I would say, Thanks for going the extra mile on this one Mitt.

Mark, way to twist the knife back at the whining press aides, and for expanding my vocabulary.

TOM

If there were no partisan politics, and the President of the United States was a civil post where applications and resumes are the basis for hiring the most qualified candidate, who would you pick, having studied all the resumes of the different candidates on both sides? Only ONE candidate is in a class of his own - MITT ROMNEY! On that very minimal of standards, I support Mitt Romney.

Oh, c'mon, the fact that his gardeners working on his massive estate/mansion were illegal immigrants matters. It's the equivalent of "I didn't inhale."

Mitt is just another rich guy trying to buy blue collar votes by promising that he will do what the voters want him to do in the future even though he did the opposite in the past. If he really cared about illegal immigration, he wouldn't have been hiring illegal immigrants a few years ago.

(And yes, I know that he did hired them though a third party. Big deal, that's how all rich people and companies get away with hiring illegal immigrants.)

Lay off the "rich". How many people play the lottery every week hoping to win big and become rich? The problem isn't money, it is how people obtain their money. Money comes in two ways: easily (lottery, gifts, inheritances, dishonest dealings even welfare etc.) or through honest hard work, education, sacrifice of time and self , savings plans and a lot of good planning. Money is not the root of all evil. The love of money is the root of all evil. Don't blame the rich for what goes on in this country. Don't blame the poor. There are a lot of admirable people in both camps. There are a lot of foolish and less than admirable people in both camps too! It is the way people use their money that matters for good or bad.

"vetoed an in-state tuition for undocumented workers bill..."

I haven't looked at the MA issue, and perhaps this is true. But for those of us who have worked this issue the concern was for the undocumented children of undocumented workers. In my state, we had high school valedictorians ineligible for in-state tuition. Their crime? Living in the difficult circumstances of migrant workers/families in our state, their parents had brought them here, and they proved to be the best and brightest.

I think it's worth pointing out that all three of the GOP front runners are going to have problems with the immigration issue.

One thing that never gets talked about in all the "tough talk" on this issue is that both Giuliani and Huckabee are on the record supporting a path to earned citizenship, and neither Romney nor Thompson have made it clear where they stand on this issue.

This particular aspect of immigration reform is to the GOP what the drivers' license issue was to the Democrats.

The press has been so distracted attacking the Democratic candidates over their answers to the drivers' license question, they've completely failed to notice that at least two of the GOP presidential candidates very clearly support what their conservative base refers to as "Amnesty."

Romney has by far the best Immigration record of the serious GOP contenders.

The Romney aide was justifiably miffed by Marc's attempt to make them all equivalently damaged.

Romney initiated this initiative far before he knew who his succesor would be. He submitted his plan to the Feds in June 2006 and it took them 6 months to give them the go ahead.

Are the critics arguing that he just should have let it die because Deval Patrick wasn't supportive of the program and would probably reverse it? No. You do what you've worked to do and leave your legacy. If others choose to act differently that is their choice

I ran into a Press release from Romney's website about his Immigration record. With apologies I'll paste it in below:

FACT: As Governor Of Massachusetts, Governor Romney Took Action To Enforce Immigration Laws.

ENFORCEMENT: In December 2006, Governor Romney Signed A Memorandum Of Agreement With The Federal Government To Allow State Troopers To Enforce Federal Immigration Laws. "Governor Mitt Romney and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Assistant Secretary Julie L. Myers today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and ICE, which will give specially trained Massachusetts State Troopers the authority to administer and enforce federal immigration laws in the Commonwealth. " (Office Of The Governor, "Governor Romney, ICE Sign Immigration Enforcement Pact," Press Release, 12/13/06)

IN-STATE TUITION: Governor Romney Vetoed In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrants. "Romney also vetoed a number of outside sections of the budget, including:...A plan that would have permitted illegal aliens to pay the same in-state tuition rate at our public colleges and universities as Massachusetts citizens." (Office Of The Governor, "Romney Signs $22.402B Fiscal Year 2005 'No New Tax' Budget," Press Release, 6/25/04)

ENGLISH IMMERSION: Governor Romney Fought Efforts To Weaken Massachusetts' English Immersion Law. "But yesterday, Romney press secretary Shawn Feddeman said the governor will fight all attempts to slow the implementation of English immersion, known on the ballot as Question 2. ... 'He will veto anything that weakens or delays English immersion,' Feddeman said." (Anand Vaishnav, "Romney Firm On English Timetable," The Boston Globe, 1/24/03)

- In June 2002, Mitt Romney Said "The Approach Of English Immersion Is One That I Support. ... I Would Make English Immersion The Educational Norm For All Non-Native English Speakers." (John McElhenny, "Mitt Romney Endorses 'English Immersion' Education Plan," The Associated Press, 6/4/02)

DRIVER'S LICENCES: Governor Romney Opposed Efforts To Give Driver's Licenses To Illegal Immigrants. "'Those who are here illegally should not receive tacit support from our government that gives an indication of legitimacy,' the governor said, echoing arguments that opponents have voiced in the Commonwealth and in other states considering similar license measures. 'If they are here illegally, they should not get driver's licenses,' he said." (Scott S. Greenberger, "Romney Stand Dims Chances Of License For Undocumented," The Boston Globe, 10/28/03)

FACT: Governor Romney Would Take Action To Secure The Borders Through Physical And Virtual Fences.

Governor Romney: "In my view, there are several principles that need to be part of our immigration plan. First, to secure the border..." (Governor Mitt Romney, Interview On The Northern Alliance Radio Network, 1/27/07)

Governor Romney: "You've got to have a wall or fence or electronic surveillance. You have got to make sure we secure our border, that's first." (Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor," 9/19/06)

FACT: Governor Romney Supports Strong Reforms To Stop Illegal Immigration And Encourage Legal Immigration.

Governor Romney: "The current system puts up a concrete wall to the best and brightest, yet those without skill or education are able to walk across the border. We must reform the current immigration laws so we can secure our borders, implement a mandatory biometrically-enabled and tamper-proof documentation and employment-verification system, and increase legal immigration into America." (David Yepsen, Op-Ed, "So Far, Romney's Been Most Impressive Republican," Des Moines Register, 7/11/06)

FACT: Governor Romney Opposes The McCain-Kennedy Bill And Any Form Of Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants.

Governor Romney: "McCain-Kennedy Isn't The Answer." "Another aspect of American sovereignty is the security of our borders. The current system is a virtual concrete wall against those who have skill and education, but it's a wide-open walk across the border for those that have neither. McCain-Kennedy isn't the answer. As governor, I took a very different approach. I authorized our state police to enforce federal immigration laws." (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks At The Conservative Political Action Conference, Washington, D.C., 3/2/07)

FACT: Governor Romney Supports A Strong Employer-Verification System That Includes A Tamper Proof Worker Verification Card.

Governor Romney: "First, to secure the border, number two, have an employment verification system. This would be a card - a biometric card - that people who are not citizens would have and before an employer hires a non citizen they would have to look at the card, type in a number on a computer, and get verification from the federal government that this person is eligible for work in the U.S. If they hired someone not so eligible that company would be fined just like not paying taxes." (Governor Mitt Romney, Interview On The Northern Alliance Radio Network, 1/27/07)

FACT: Governor Romney Supports Empowering Local And State Authorities To Enforce Federal Immigration Laws.

Governor Romney Believes More State And Local Police Agencies Should Work With The Federal Government To Enforce Immigration Laws. "Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said Tuesday that more state and local police agencies ought to consider making deals with the federal government to have their officers trained in enforcing elements of federal immigration law. ... 'I think it's a good idea for us to communicate that we intend to enforce our laws,' Romney said." (Jacques Billeaud, "Romney: More State, Local Police Should Get Immigration Training," The Associated Press, 3/13/07)

Mitt romney makes me sick to my stomach. not because he is a mormon. though that makes some people sick.
it's because he is fake: c'mon people! he won the election to gov of MA by saying he was more liberal than ted kenedy- the icon of liberals. as for this about immigration, not to be mean, but there is a verse in the bible concerning this, if you believe in the bible like mitt says he does.

luke 6: 41&42
41 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

To Bob, Mark, Anthony, and other posts here.

If you would check into the Federal laws concerning hiring and firing employees, you will find that when an prospective employee applies for a job, all an employer can do is look at the resume, and ask the prospective employee to fill out an I-9 form. The I -9 form requires the employer to get certain kinds of identification. Even though the applicant doesn't speak English, if he fills out the form and supplies a social security number, this is all you can ask for. You cannot ask if he is legal or not.

After you send in the I-9 form, the Social Security administration will check it and return it to the employer if the name and number does not match.

You would think at that point, the employer could question the employee about his legal status, but no, he cannot! All he can do is ask the employee to fill out a new I-9 and send it back in again.

The second time the IRS returns the form as a non-match, the employer can then confront the illegal.

There are nine (9) pages of instructions to fill out the one page I-9. If the employer does not follow the exact rules, he has broken the law and will be fined.

So to answer the question as to whether Mitt Romney should have known his lawn caretaker was employing illegals, keep in mind that he would have been breaking the law just to ask.

Seems pretty stupid, doesn't it.

What Scott said is correct and if you believe that the INS is any help, your wrong.

We have sent them copies of green cards for varification only to have them tell us the they apear to posibly not be real. They will not tell an employer that they did not in fact issue the card or not.

So if you fail to hire this person, then the labor department fines you for discrimination!

Try that on for a while. If you are not a employer then you have no idea what it is like trying to deal with our government.

I am so frequently appalled that seemingly intelligent people can use these words out of partisan playbooks. The term flip flop is a dumbing down that trivializes the complexity of the true issues facing out country. Why should we damn any candidate for being pragmatic instead of dogmatic. Mitt Romney has shown the ability to lead and manage complex issues in business and in government that lead to positive change.

Get a grip. I must disagree with Mr. Dick Morris that only Rudy Giuliani can beat Hilliary Clinton, who by the way will be more of the same big government spending. Mitt Romney will do more with less.

I am also tired of seeing journalist on the right and on the left, seemingly in the spirit of independence, highlight a positive and turn it into a negative. Mitt Romney is a beacon of hope for our country. I believe that state by state in the primaries, we will figure this out and that he will be our next president.

IN RESPONSE TO
SAM

Tax hike Mike raised 31 different taxes.

Had several different ethic violations filed against him, have come Romney didn't have any even filed ????

I talked to a gal who sit next to Mike Huckabee on a plane on they way to Cedar Rapids and she said he was a jerk to the flight attendants and very rude didn't even say hello to her, Mind you... She sat right next him.

I am not Mormon, but I know the fact your not supporting Mitt Romney has more to do with the fact he is Mormon. How come Evangiels can't have a little more live and live attitude.

Sorry we don't need Huckabee as president.

All these minor accusations of Mitt Romney are likely symptomatic of the real irritation, his religion. Religious intollerance or bigotry is symptomatic of a still deeper problem, ignorance. Ever think that mass mentality can be and often is, wrong? Not only is Mitt Romney an otherwise stellar candidate, he knows his religion better than the masses. He lives his Christian faith better than the other candidates.
That too is likely an irritation. Mitt Romney is one of the most moral men I have ever known. It cuts me deeply to see uninformed people weigh in on something they know little or nothing about.

The trouble with politicians talking about immigration is that none of them will tell the US taxpayers what a war on illegal immigration will cost.
The answer - a fortune.
Will it be any more effective at eradicating illegal immigrants as the war on drugs has been in eradicating illegal drugs...

Mitt Romney has credibility problems on immigration, abortion & taxes. I wrote about his abortion credibility here:

http://www.letfreedomringblog.com/?p=2291

I wrote about his tax-cutting problems here:

http://www.letfreedomringblog.com/?p=2290

I'll have something posted later today about his immigration troubles later today.
