Again, Romney Landscapers Employ Undocumented Workers

04 Dec 2007 06:01 pm

Two times' the charm.

Last year, when Mitt Romney learned that his lawn care company, Community Lawn Services, used illegal immigrants to tend to his Belmont property, he promised immediate action. That action, apparently, was just a warning.

Today, Romney was forced to fire the company after he learned that, once again, undocumented workers had been allowed to cut grass on his property.

Romney, in a statement today:

"Today, I fired a landscaping company that I learned was employing people who are not permitted to work here in the United States. After this same issue arose last year, I gave the company a second chance with very specific conditions. They were instructed to make sure people working for the company were of legal status. We personally met with the company in order to inform them about the importance of this matter. The owner of the company guaranteed us, in very certain terms, that the company would be in total compliance with the law going forward. The company's failure to comply with the law is disappointing and inexcusable, and I believe it is important I take this action."

Point to Romney: the current system is untenable; employers and consumers can't be held responsible for enforcing immigration laws; Romney is very busy running a campaign and can't possible be bothered to check on such things; should he check the employment status of everyone with a "funny" accent who works on his lawn:?

Point to Giuliani/Romney's rivals: "Sanctuary Mansion" -- again? Why did Romney not fire the company last year? He warned them last year and let them off....he continued to use their services until he found out, again, that they were employing illegal immigrations.

This is a political embarrassment. An unforced error. One that his opponents will use to whip him. Is he really committed to cleansing the republic of the stain of illegal immigration? Or is he just talking tough for the sake of impressing Republican primary voters? Is he really a pro-comprehensive-reform businessman at heart, unable to survive without undocumented labor? And how many Republican primary voters use lawn care companies?

Now, a Thompson or Giuliani can run a contrast ad using this example. It's unfolding in real time.

Romney's letter is after the jump.

Mr. Ricardo Saenz

Community Lawn Service

174 Shurtleff St.

Chelsea, MA 02150

Dear Mr. Saenz:

Today I learned that employees of your company, who were assigned to work on my property, are not permitted to work in the United States. Given your company’s disregard for the clear instructions provided on this issue last year, I am forced to terminate my contract with your company, effective immediately. My family will no longer utilize your services and all scheduled visits are cancelled as of today.

I am disappointed that our relationship must end on this note, but we simply cannot tolerate your inability to ensure that your employees are legally permitted to work in the United States. Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Mitt Romney

Romney is a 5-star flipflopper. This political opportunist has no principles at all. A one time error can be overlooked but this smarta*s who spews venom against illegal immigration is caught red-handed second time. He does not deserve a second chance and need to be politically punished.

Go Huck!

The guy who preaches one thing and does exactly opposite needs to be sent to Gitmo.. remember he wants to double the size of Gitmo.

Does Mittster, the Flipper, have any shame?

> Romney is very busy running a campaign and can't

WTF? Romney's 5 sons can serve the nation by checking the docs of the workers who are working on his lawn. The 5 sons can take turns.

The hypocrite jerks are bountiful in GOP.

Oh, not everyone in the GOP is a lying flip-flopping cheater that reneges on his promises. There's one guy the GOP does NOT want elected, because he'd restore the Republican party to the PEOPLE instead of corporations. Time after time I talk to Democrats who, when they actually SEE Dr. Paul's platform say, "Man, that's what I wanted from the Democratic party! Only, without all the wealth redistribution schemes... Looks like even working people could make a GOOD living without the government stealing all their money! Good government AND civil liberties! No war! An infrastructure that will keep America #1!"

Then I have to break their heart and tell them, not if you don't register to VOTE it won't. YOUR vote might be the one that saves America!

This one just sounds dumb, dumb, dumb. His answer during the debates was good - sounded like common sense and made Guiliani look foolish. A homeowner can't check papers on every contractor who speaks Spanish.

This is the most pathetic act of politically suicidal laziness conducted by anyone. Fred Thompson doesn't even come close. Well, is it laziness or just plain idiocy? Romney picked the wrong fight to have with the GOP crowd. Immigration hypocrisy is fatal.

So one more republican candidate turned out to be a hypocrite thug. Why is anyone surprised?

This flipflopper is morally corrupt and does not even deserve to be a dog catcher!

Last year Mitt was for illegal immigrants before he was against them.

Now, Mitt was for illegal immigrants before he was against them.

He not only flpflops but he is shameless about doing it.

I'm just as outraged about illegal immigration as the next conservative... but to think that Romney's rivals--especially McCain--will use this as fodder against him is outrageous. I've had work done on my home and my yard this summer, and I've wondered about the immigration status of the workers, but what am I supposed to do if the company assures that they're legal? Am I supposed to run background checks myself? To criticize Romney on this one is to put the onus for immigration enforcement on the consumer... outrageous and silly. Folks calling Romney nasty names based on this story should stop and think before name-calling... unfortunately thinking is not a strong point for many of the political blog trolls out there.

Those who live glass houses should not throw stones at others. Thats all.

Romney is a dishonest politician, that's all.

Romney is really not doing so well currently, and it all seems to be because of Romney. The LA-Times poll just released tonight and him fifth and in singe-digits nationally, and he is crushed in the general by both Clinton and Obama.

So the next time you have tree service, landscape service, pool cleaned, plumbing done, electrical work done, shop at walmart, eat any seafood from a processing plant, have your car worked etc, etc, etc. you better ask for paperwork on all of the employees working at the establishment you are doing business with. Maybe Romney is doing better than most admitt if we are nit picking on things like this. He is still the best of all the choices out there. Unfortunately we will probably be looking at a Gulliani/Clinton race and that would not be good. Especially since Guilliani's good police chief buddy will find a way to drag Gulliani into the mess and once again our country will be tarnished by scandal in the White House.

Stop all this festering issue of illegal immigration. Unless U.S. citizens strive to end this conflict amongst the rulling parties, the immigration debate isn't going away. None of the politial parties are without blame, nor the American people? This invasion has not just started, it's been gaining momentum of three decades. Its an argument full of venom and pro-illegal immigrant groups, only have to use the race card to send both politicans and activists cowering in a dark corner. However, times are changing and the globalist, open-border, free-marketeers are not winning any more. Mitt Romney, Guiliani, Edwards, Hillary Clinton, Richardson, McCain and others are now scrambling to appease the majority of the American citizen population who are fed up with paying the tab for pariah employers. The annual cost to taxpayers is about $22 billion a year according to Center for Immigration Studies and the tax burden will grow -- because 15 million more immigrants are set to arrive by year 2017 according to their latest research.

More than 10 million immigrants have arrived since year 2000; it is estimated that nearly 6 million are illegal. All told, the group of immigrants now account for 38 million at the moment according to the White House's own census bureau. Fight back today and demand your Washington (Public Servant) co-authors "THE SAVE ACT".

Tired of illegal immigration ?

Only those Senators & Congressmen willing to co-sponsot the SAVE Act should be given our vote.

The Save Act forces all employers to verify social security numbers. It's an "interior enforcement" bill that this country needs.

Get more details at NumbersUSA and send a free fax to your elected reps. asking them to co-sponsor this revolutionaty new bill.

Contact Congress today. Thanks.
