Des Moines Register Will Drop Endorsements Soon

15 Dec 2007 02:23 pm

....probably in the early evening... and no one knows who... although all the campaigns have guesses, and at least one of them has an office pool.

Now -- the Register endorsement has been historically important, but it has not translated into victory...

The Register endorsed John Edwards in 2004....Bill Bradley in 2000....No one in 1992....Paul Simon in 1988...

And the Republicans don't really care.

The Des Moines Register will do what is expected. They will endorse HRC/The Clinton Machine. The Power of the Machine is to make people vote, even when they do not want to.

That is why Clintons are the Planet Earth most fantastic family. That is why Americans are the Planet Earth most gullible voters. We are suckers. We can be fooled once, twice, and a thousand times, and we will still do the wrong thing.

Obama is the Answer. He has more experience, more vision, more character, more honesty, more integrity than BOTH Clintons. Sadly, the Press led by NYT (see Gail Collins fanning article on Clinton today, 12/15).

Support Obama.

Rumor has it they're going to endorse Edwards. Maybe Oprah will buy the newspaper next week, replace the editorial staff, and force them to withdraw their endorsement and change it to Obama.

Hey, let's keep making comments bashing other candidates based upon assumptions based on little to no real information. It's so hard to wait until after the endorsement to make these commnets, because their actual endorsement could be one that you don't have a witty retort for!

What Roger said.

David Yepsen has been shilling against Obama so they will endorse Edwards.

Today's Register is very different. Just watch the incompetent moderator of the debates. What the paper did in the past is no longer a guide to what it may do now.

How is the Register in any way "historically important" if it's choice has never won?

@right: Edwards jumped from next-to-nothing to 2nd place after the endorsement in 2004, and in a very close race like this one, a strong endorsement for one candidate could certainly push them over the needed voter level.

My guess is either Edwards or Biden.

'How is the Register in any way "historically important" if it's choice has never won?'

It's usually endorsed non-front-runners and given them some late momentum which has enabled them to do better than they would have otherwise.

For example, in 2004, their endorsement of Edwards was a major factor in him passing Dean and Gephardt and coming in a close second to Kerry.

In 1988, their endorsement pushed Paul Simon to a close second place finish to Gephardt.

So put it this way: the Register endorsement will likely be worth 5-10 points in the caucuses for a Democrat.

That could mean the difference between first and third for a top-tier candidate and could lift a second-tier candidate to a finish that allows them to get a second look in the following states.

A friend in Kansas told me today that the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas (yes, THAT one) is going to endorse Huckabee next week.

Whether it happens or not, it says a lot about the kinds of people he's attracting.

Just got word from inside.

Endorsement goes to:

DENNIS KUCINICH
