Dirty Tricks?

04 Dec 2007 08:56 am

From an e-mail sent to Clinton supporters last night:

Dear XXXX,

I wanted to let you know immediately about reports our campaign has received about possible dirty campaign tactics in Iowa and New Hampshire -- and ask for your help.

In Iowa, we have heard reports that Hillary supporters are getting calls that tell them incorrect caucus locations. Supporters have also told us about push polls -- when they tell the pollster they support Hillary, they are given negative talking points about her and asked which attacks are the most effective.

In both Iowa and New Hampshire, we have heard that Obama staffers are berating Hillary supporters on the phone with negative attacks against her.

Here is one report we got from someone who received a push poll in Iowa:
I do want to let you know, Saturday afternoon, I had a phony pollster call from "an independently owned polling service" ... With my first choice as Hillary and undecided 2nd choice. I was asked if I approved of the direction the country was taking. The question then shifted. "Which of these three options best defines your candidate? 1) Inconsistent on major issues. 2) A weak contender in the general election. 3) Not able to bring change to Washington." I told them I would not answer because it was not a polling question ... I asked where they were calling from. Repeatedly the response was that they were calling from the United States and it was paid for by an independently owned polling firm.

Here is another report from a letter to the editor in an Iowa paper:

The bullying coming from some of the other Democratic candidates is childlike and not what the Democrats stand for. I even had some guy call me from the Obama camp and start bullying me over the phone when I said I supported Hillary. He started arguing and got aggressive on the phone. I did tell him his behavior was not appropriate.

And here is a report from New Hampshire:

When my father informed them that he was supporting Hillary they proceeded to talk to him about her failure to reform health care when she was First Lady. He said it sounded like they were reading something that was already prepared.

These reports are invaluable to our campaign! It is vitally important that we know about any unethical tactics our opponents may use. And as one of our best supporters in Iowa, you are in the best position to keep us informed. If you or any of your family, friends, or neighbors receive negative push poll calls or any misleading information about the election, please contact our Iowa headquarters immediately to let them know. Here is contact information:

Thank you for helping us make sure this election is a fair one, and for everything you do for Hillary.

Sincerely,

PSD
Patti Solis Doyle

Marc: do some of your own investigation, and don't use the Fox News like "statement-followed-by-a-question-mark" technique.

I like PSD is getting desperate...

I'm in Iowa and this looks like a tactic by the Clinton campaign. I've heard nothing about this kind of thing happening. They are doing their best to de-legitimize the Iowa Caucus.

More victim playing by the Clinton camp.

You can almost smell the Clinton desperation taking over. They are already setting up their excuses - Iowa is sexist, they wont vote for a woman and the college students (otherwise known as legal voters) originally from Illinois are cheating by caucusing.

I did get the Huckabee push poll though. My husband is a Republican and I'm a Democrat so we get calls from everybody.

Hillary is getting desperate. This sounds like a nice way of knocking the new IA polls and asking for cash at the same time.

I'm with KE...until I see an independent source on this, I'm of the mind that its garbage...

HIllary's desperate to try to tarnish Obama's clean candidate credentials. She's attacking his character, slinging play-do over his kindergarten record, and now accusing him of doing stuff he is not doing. It's kind of like the karl rove trick of accusing your rivals of bugging your office. The strategy here is clear: draw Obama into a mudfight where her thuggish tactics may work and avoid a high minded discussion of policy and leadership, which she is losing big time. I hope voters will see this for what it is. Unfortunately, the media is going to breathlessly report every attack no matter how trivial and manufactured and Obama is going to have to do some parrying at least. I think the "silliness" comment was good yesterday. Fight back with a soft touch, don't lower yourself to her level, and exude maturity and seriousness as she continues to slide into the absurd.

I love the logic of these comments: I love Obama, so there couldn't be any truth to these allegations. Not "hmmm, maybe we'll learn more .. . maybe there will be an explanation." None of that, just "I know it never happened because my candidate is a saint and always above reproach."

No one cares about the truth. No one wants to know the truth. Politics is all mindless, meaningless boosterism and blaming.

Tony has a point. But I suspect that ALL of the candidates have supporters in Iowa that are making phone calls and going negative by push-poll or script.

And so what? I would judge negative campaigning harshly only when it purports to be from one side, but is actually from the opposing side, or contains lies. We can disagree as to Hillary's "failure to reform health care when she was First Lady" and her "weakness as a candidate," but neither is a lie. (Of course, neither is claiming that Obama is naive or unqualified, or a weak general election candidate, etc.)

I doubt that Obama or Hillary etc. are personally engaged in deciding on specific negative tactics, both because I doubt they are personally engaged in deciding on any specific tactics, but also because the Iowa operatives know that probably everyone at the national headquarters wants a certain amount of deniability for such tactics.

This doesn't make sense. Every Democrat in NH knows about the phone jamming scandal. Anyone doing this would have the IQ of a gnat. It does sound like a phony ploy. This, the almost Nixonian prying around Obama's third grade work,
the manipulation of Obama's presenty votes (which meant yes in Illinois) -- all this sounds like some really filthy moves coming from the Clinton camp. She's never really had a contest on her hands before. I am very disappointed with her.

I would bet money that this is a fabrication by the Clinton campaign.

Why would Obama do this as he continues to gain in the polls?

RE: Hillary Tries to Commit Murder/Suicide in Iowa

The Clinton campaign is obviously reeling from the effects of their candidate's failed attempts to go after Obama over the weekend. I can't believe Patti Solis Doyle, Clinton's Campaign Manager, is now resorting to falsly accusing the Obama campaign of playing "dirty tricks" in Iowa such as negative push-polling to test the effectiveness of anti-Hillary messages, and saying that Obama staffers are attacking Hillary's staffers - all of this to DRAG HIM DOWN into the mud. Here's the link to the article from the Des Moines Register.

Clinton e-mail warns more "dirty tricks" cropping up:

We all know Obama isn’t behind any negative campaigning. This is getting bad. Hillary is trying to commit "murder-suicide” in Iowa to prevent Obama from winning there!

They are accusing Obama of playing dirty tricks when in fact their planting of this total MIS-information IS the dirty trick. Unbelievable.

Typical Rovian/Clintonian tactics. Do we really want 4 more years of this?

I have a theory as to why Hillary is doing this stuff. She knows she can't win Iowa, but the best she can do is beat up Obama enough so that Edwards wins there. They may be figuring that Edwards can't go the distance and that Obama's 2nd place bounce may not be enough for him to overtake her in later states.

HIllary has to know that these attacks are going to hurt her in Iowa, but I wonder if she is trying to take Obama down with her so that Edards gets the headline on jan 4th.. But what if she takes it too far and actually comes in 4th to a surpise 3rd by a biden or a richardson? I think the plot here is thicker than Hillary thinking this is going to help her win Iowa. This is to stop Obama from sligshoting out of Iowa and her betting that she can live on to fight another day in later states.

If it's an e-mail from the Clinton campaign, it must be true.

As a volunteer phone caller and canvasser for Obama, it was made pretty clear to us by the campaign that we were not ever to engage potential caucusers in negative discussion of any of the other candidates. So I'm more than a little skeptical of these reports.

Marc, why are you publishing the certainly-false claims that these calls are coming from the Obama camp?

Note that Ms. Doyle's note deliberately conflates/mixes the push-poll questions with reports of individual Obama phone bankers. THIS is the dirty trick here, and I hate to see you enable it like this without any screening -- let alone analysis -- whatsoever.

Coming on the heels of the Washington Post's "madrassa" story, you really should have known better (and should just know better, anyway).

I love it when Democrats attack each other. And, you know, they're usually both right.

I'm in Iowa too, and like KE, I find the idea of supporters/staffers criticizing other candidates very unlikely. Phone contact here is just as much about lining up second-choice support, and you don't do that by attacking someone's first choice. I find DWP's assertion that "everyone" is doing this highly fanciful -- I've yet to have one conversation of this nature, and I too get calls all the time. Maybe there are some "rogue" Obama supporters making these calls, but I can't imagine it is campaign policy.

"He said it sounded like they were reading something that was already prepared."

Oh my stars! Volunteer phone bankers reading from a script! Can't have that!

This is making Camp Hillary look incredibly inexperienced.

What are they going to do if Republicans start REALLY smearing them? Tell their mommies?

Wandering About,

I don't believe you and I have a substantive disagreement.

I don't believe that "everyone" is doing this. I do believe that "everyone" has some Iowa supporters that are doing this, and that the personal feelings of Clinton, Obama etc. as to whether these people are "rogue" elements isn't knowable or relevant.

Outstanding post. I wholeheartedly agree.

Marc is not the only one in the blogsphere engaging in what is clear rumormongering on the part of the Clinton campaign.

Several blogs are doing so...it is like none of them mind being the source of the rumor mill.

It is interesting that no one in the comments reports that they have received such phone calls.

Hmmmm, let's see. Who do I trust more? The Clinton campaign or the Obama campaign? Hmmmm.

Oh I guess I'll have to side with Obama on this one. I know Clinton is capable of telling the truth when convenient. I'm sure Obama really did write he wanted to be president in kindergarten (and I'm still impressed he could, at that age). But I'm equally sure truth telling isn't her instinctive move.

Sorry but this sounds more like the Clinton camp trying to blame Obama for doing something that the Clintons would do themselves. They just cannot believe that the opposition would not do all the things they themselves would do. Remember Bubba and all the black churches being burned down?

I'm starting to lose respect for you, Marc.

"When my father informed them that he was supporting Hillary they proceeded to talk to him about her failure to reform health care when she was First Lady. He said it sounded like they were reading something that was already prepared."

What am I missing here? A voter was called, expressed an opinion and then the caller attempted to change that voter's mind on a particular issue using information that had been previously researched. And this is bad because...?

Surely the whole point of running a political campaign is to try to PERSUADE voters, using, you know, actual arguments about issues. Right? What should the caller do? "You support Hillary - thank you for telling me I will immediately back away without engaging you in anything as dangerous as an actual political discussion."

Look, it goes the other way, too. In this case, however, we have a specific claim and a named miscreant (i.e., it's not made up by the supposed victim), and also a forceful disavowal:

Dec 9 07:13 PM
WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign on Sunday requested the resignation of a second Iowa volunteer coordinator who forwarded a hoax e-mail saying Barack Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States.

I just want to warn the McCain campaign.
Obama bloggers are very well organized and
coordinated online ... and they play dirty!
Obama supporters will post anti-McCain blogs
on pro-McCain websites. They stoop to nasty
slurs and insults. Obama bloggers will respond
to any criticism, with accusations of racism.
Obama supporters will respond to pro-McCain
blogs by somehow sending tons of spam to
the computers of McCain supporters.
Good Luck Senator McCain, I'm voting for
you in November.
