“Don’t Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?”

12 Dec 2007 09:24 am

The man who asks this question is Mike Huckabee, according to a New York Times magazine cover story written by Zev Chafetz.

The Huckabee campaign says the quote should be read in context.

So here's the context.

On the road to Pella, Huckabee talked about the enthusiasm he now encounters everywhere he goes. For example, he said, his driver in California not only declined payment but also wrote the governor a $50 personal check right on the spot. It was, I thought, a dangerous anecdote to tell within earshot of a professional driver traveling along an icy highway at high speed, but Huckabee was feeling invulnerable, and the driver, I later realized, was already on the governor’s team. Huckabee normally starts his mornings by running 6 to 10 miles and reading a chapter from the Book of Proverbs. Today he was too pressed to do either, but he planned to catch up later. Anyway, he knew much of the day’s assignment, Chapter 3, by heart. ‘‘Trust in the Lord,’’ he quoted, ‘‘and lean not upon thine own understanding.’’ Not a bad motto for a campaign that is still too broke to do any independent polling.

Chapter 3 also contains the admonition to ‘‘keep sound wisdom and discretion.’’ Huckabee is, indeed, a discreet fellow, but he has no trouble making his feelings known. He mentioned how much he respected his fellow candidates John McCain and Rudolph W. Giuliani. The name of his principal rival in Iowa, Mitt Romney, went unmentioned. Romney, a Mormon, had promised that he would be addressing the subject of his religion a few days later. I asked Huckabee, who describes himself as the only Republican candidate with a degree in theology, if he considered Mormonism a cult or a religion. ‘‘I think it’s a religion,’’ he said. ‘‘I really don’t know much about it.’’

I was about to jot down this piece of boilerplate when Huckabee surprised me with a question of his own: ‘‘Don’t Mormons,’’ he asked in an innocent voice, ‘‘believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?’’

In this unpredictable primary season, Mike Huckabee’s surge in Iowa — and beyond — is perhaps the greatest surprise. Iowa was supposed to be a pushover for Mitt Romney. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, began working the state more than a year ago. He commands an army of trained professionals and a vast ad budget. Mitt Romney’s message flows like Muzak out of every radio and TV in the state. All this effort has reportedly cost Romney more than $7 million. Huckabee, by contrast, has spent less than $400,000 in Iowa. His paid staff in the state is not much bigger than a softball team. Televised Huckabee ads have been harder to catch than ‘‘I Love Lucy’’ reruns.

Just a nice wink--wink scenrio where Huckabee tries to disparage Mormonism without actually bashing it directly. GOP voters will eat it up.

I don't get it. It is a legitimate question and does not matter. The Mormons DO believe that Lucifer is God's brother. Who cares? Christians believe that Lucifer is an Angel that challenged God ad was thrown out of Heaven. Who Cares? Jews believe that Jesus is not the Son of God? Who cares?

What is happening now is the media is turning on Huckabee so these made up controversies will continue to explode or fizzle.

It's interesting that nobody's answering the question. Has anybody bothered to realize it might be a legitimate question, not a slam?

The question may be legitimate. The problem is that Huckabee is asking a REPORTER the question. Shouldn't he be asking a theologian or at the very least a Mormon?

Huckabee is attempting to plant a thought while appearing to ask an "innocent" question.

The sad thing is that he didn't even need to say it. Why he said it, is as confusing to me as the statement itself.

Huckabee recently told a CBN reporter that his theology degree uniquely qualifies him to handle Islamofacisim better than the other candidates because we are fighting a theocratic war, but he's "innocently" asking a reporter about what a Mormon believes? How is it that his theology degree helps him handle a Muslim with a gun, but he needs a reporter's help to understand the theology of a Mormon on a bike?

Just to set the record straight: Mormons, who ARE Christians and believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and accept him as our Savior and Redeemer, believe that Satan challenged God and was thrown out of Heaven. We do NOT believe that "Lucifer is God's brother", we believe he was a spirit child of God who led a revolt against God (and one-third of heavenly spirits followed him to damnation).

I know that the previous commenter feels these issues "do not matter" but so many lies are told about my Church that I like to set the record straight when it is possible.

I hope that Huckabee, who has been very receptive to support from all groups and types, does not resort to "Mormon-bashing" just because his church does it and Romney is a formidable rival.

I like Huckabee's sense of humor and his stand on many issues, but I don't want ANY candidate who will bash another's religion. I hope he doesn't resort to these type of sneaky tactics.

This question is a mainstay of anti-Mormon propaganda, and Huckabee knew it. Huckabee was one of the people behind the 20,000 Southern Baptist invasion of Utah a few years ago. The idea was that they would evangelize Mormons and show them the error of their ways. They had to call it off when it became apparent that more Southern Baptists were being converted to Mormonism than there were Mormons being converted to Evangelicalism. Huckabee has, then, a history of anti-Mormon activism, so this was anything but a legitimate question....it was the theological equivalent of a Declaration of War. If he wants it, he can have it. But in the West, it could easily cost our party states like Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada....swing states all, and states in which the Mormon vote is critical.

This is really poor form by Huckabee.

To those above who say it's legitimate, I say were John Kerry's references to Cheney's "lesbian" daughter legitimate?

It wasn't an inocent question. Huckabee knew that this was a common attack on Mormon belief.

Kind of like asking, "Don't catholics pray to Mary?"

Demo...

No he doesn't. Now you know.

Wait a second there Brennan this is where you are confused. The Mormon church believes that Lucifer is a "spirit child" in your lesson. That makes him a brother of Jesus who is the Son of God. But Christians believe that Jesus is God so Huckabee's statement is valid. There are no lies being told. Just people talking past themselves.

Again, it is moot issue as to who can run the country and the media is engaging in bomb throwing...

I think this is probably a media hitjob, because its coming from the media, not the Huckabee campaign. Look at their website, they have a statement responding to it that they believe in freedom of worship in this country.

to the mormon:
The reporter, if familiar with LDS beliefs, would say "Yes, they do, but they don't think that's bad." That's what I get from your post.

If you disagree, say "Jesus and Satan are NOT and have never been spirit brothers nor will they ever be brothers in any shape or form." Obviously a Mormon can't say that.
Give me any quote from of the LDS leaders that officially say that Jesus and Satan are NOT brothers. I don't mean statements that say "We believe in Jesus and are the real Christians and you are attacking us."

Christians have always believed that Satan is a created angel, while Jesus is the Creator God, and that this created angel rebelled against God with other angels, the demons.

I think its deceptive to try to avoid the belief, when if someone does research or talks to a missionary its pretty obvious thats what Mormons believe. Why be deceptive about it?

Yeah, as a former Catholic with a Catholic family, yes, catholics do pray to Mary. My family did growing up, and you there are many prayers addressed to "the Queen." But you're right, many Catholics "feel attacked" if they are challenged about praying to Mary.
Of course, there are no such prayers in the Bible despite all the prayers to God and the instructions on prayer, and for centuries after the NT was written there are no records of anyone praying to "the Queen," despite many writings that confess belief in Jesus Christ our Lord and God, his death for our sins and his resurrection, his coming back in judgment. Just prayer to Almighty God. I know that many aren't aware of this, when I was younger I had thought the 'roman catholic church' had always existed, but from studying the bible and studying ancient history I know better now, thank the Lord.

The only time that I have heard people outside the Mormon faith talk about the Jesus/Satan brother concept is in critizing the faith.

I would be surprised in Huckabee did not know this, and it is an odd topic to bring up to a reporter.

From LDS.org
"Like other Christians, we believe Jesus is the divine Son of God. Satan is a fallen angel.

As the Apostle Paul wrote, God is the Father of all. That means that all beings were created by God and are His spirit children. Christ, however, was the only begotten in the flesh, and we worship Him as the Son of God and the Savior of mankind"

But that isin't as sensational as "Jesus and Satan are Brothers"

It is a very sad state of affairs indeed when our national election comes down to an argument between a Morman and a Baptist over Jesus' family tree! I don't like Romney but I will never vote for Huckabee. I don't mind him fighting with Mormans but he should never bring that into the oval office, which is exactly where it will be in the extremely unlikely event that he is elected.

Yet again, we have a raging exchange of opinions, when FACTS are available:

I Have a Question

How can Jesus and Lucifer be spirit brothers when their characters and purposes are so utterly opposed?

Jess L. Christensen, Institute of Religion director at Utah State University, Logan, Utah: On first hearing, the doctrine that Lucifer and our Lord, Jesus Christ, are brothers may seem surprising to some -- especially to those unacquainted with latter-day revelations. But both the scriptures and the prophets affirm that Jesus Christ and Lucifer are indeed offspring of our Heavenly Father and, therefore, spirit brothers. Jesus Christ was with the Father from the beginning. Lucifer, too, was an angel “who was in authority in the presence of God,” a “son of the morning.” (See Isa. 14:12; D&C 76:25–27.) Both Jesus and Lucifer were strong leaders with great knowledge and influence. But as the Firstborn of the Father, Jesus was Lucifer’s older brother. (See Col. 1:15; D&C 93:21.)
...That brothers would make dramatically different choices is not unusual.

...We can only imagine the sorrow of our Heavenly Father as he watched a loved son (Lucifer) incite and lead a rebellion and lose his opportunity for exaltation. But we can also imagine the Father’s love and rejoicing as he welcomed back the beloved son (Jesus) who had valiantly and perfectly fought the battles of life and brought about the great Atonement through his suffering and death.

Of course Huckabee was digging Mormons while saying he wasn't going to. It's just like Hillary's camp saying, "Just watch the Republicans bring up Obama's past drug use." Why should they when she's bringing it up herself??

I don't want to simply defend Huckabee. It seems clear to me he has tried to keep personal beliefs out of this, even when he himself has been directly questioned a number of times on theological issues. There may be other real issues and no doubt we'll get some doozies before the campaign is over, but this one seems to be getting blown out of proportion. The situation seems like a possible comment taken out of context, and evidently Huckabee and Romney have squared up on it so we should be able to let go also.

Romney is a Baptist preacher. He knows the answer to his question. He might as well have asked, do Catholics worship Mary or did Jews kill Christ?

Oops. I meant Huckabee is a Baptist preacher, obviously.

Romney never should have givin that speach.

Even though it has become more like a Christians sect, LDS doctrine will not hold up well to media scrutiny.

Someone is going to ask him the million dollar questions

Was Christ created or was he always God?

Do you believe in the Trinity?

Do you believe the Nicean Creed?

Game --- set --- match.

To bad because he is clearly the best man for the job.

See, this is why the Muslims will ultimately take over - all different sects of Christianity are fighting each other over who are the real followers of Christ.

Huck knew well what he was doing when he asked the question. For years Evangelicals and Baptists, in particular, have been bashing Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). They can't stand that so many Baptists are converting to the LDS church. Baptist and Pentacostal ministers are losing members and money, so they lash out against and lie about the Mormons and our doctrines. For that matter, they also criticize other faiths and fight among themselves much of the time. Just live in Texas for a while and read the newspapers!

Well there are many kinds of Baptists and if they go over to LDS religion they were never Christians in the first place just pretenders,Armenians who believe they have the ability to save themselves by works,Salvation is by Grace only it is a gift from God,not of ourselves.

The reason that Evangelical Christians have such a problem with Mormans (not seen as Christians but more like a cult) is that they created a "book" outside the Bible, which is against what God's Word says in the Bible says about "do not take away or add to the Scriptures". Paul wrote about us being most aware of false prophets who's agendas are not God's, but their own. This rings true about Joseph Smith. False prophet. Period.

I'm not worried about Romney's religion. Haven't noticed any Mormons blowing themselves up lately or flying planes into buildings.
He's not the candidate we have to worry about when it comes to religion.
