First Look: Romney's "Searched"

19 Dec 2007 08:29 am

You're getting a first look at the most personal, most provocative television ad Mitt Romney has aired so far...

It's called "Searched." It tells a story familiar to readers of Romney biographies. Robert Gay was a partner at Bain Capital; his 14-year-old daughter disappeared in New York City in 1996, and when the investigation stalled after three days, Romney emptied the Boston office, transported everyone to the city, set up a command center, printed 300,000 fliers, and searched for the girl.

The Bain team was credited by police with helping to find her (safe and sound), and in the ad, Robert Gay says: "The man who helped save my daughter was Mitt Romney."

What's this about?

Romney's personal character; a video holiday card to Iowans; the father figure who protects vulnerable young women; a businessman who knows that family is more important than profit; a look into Romney's soul.

It's tempting to see this ad as a direct rebutal to Mike Huckabee's lugubriously Christian efforts, but a Romney aide said the ad was filmed at least two weeks ago. The Gay family agreed earlier in the campaign, the aide said, to tell their story to Romney's videographers.

It's going to be hard not to interpret the ad as a slap of sorts against New York City, and its mayor at the time -- one Rudy Giuliani -- as documentation provided by the campaign makes clear. Romney told the Boston Globe in 1996:

"Now back in school and fully recovered, Melissa and her parents are doing well, Romney said. The partners, however, are still taking stock of their visit to the dark corners of New York, putting up posters and talking to runaways outside seedy nightclubs and peep shows. Romney said he can't escape some of the images he carries with him from his week in the New York underworld. 'It was a shocker,' he said. 'The number of lost souls was astounding.."

Here's the script:

My fourteen year-old daughter had disappeared in New York City for three days. No one could find her.

"My business partner stepped forward to take charge. He closed the company and brought almost all our employees to New York.

"He said, 'I don’t care how long it takes – we’re going to find her.'

"He set up a command center and searched through the night. The man who helped save my daughter was Mitt Romney.

"Mitt's done a lot of things that people say are nearly impossible. But for me, the most important thing he’s ever done is to help save my daughter."

GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: "I’m Mitt Romney and I approved this message."

Mitt is amazing. I'm so glad to see them starting to tell his story. He's uniquely qualified to be President and has done many amazing things along his professional career.

The real Romney is clearly an extraordinarily ambitious man with no perceivable political principle whatsoever. He is the most intellectually dishonest human being in the history of politics.

Hmmm. Considering the intended audience, you'd think the Mittbot could have gotten them to change their last name, at least for the commercial. I can just see the Huckster mentioning how the card-carrying member of Planned Parenthood went out of his way to help the NYC Gays.

The message I take from this is simply that Mitt cares a lot about big-shot investment bankers and their families. If Robert Gay wasn't a partner at Bain Capital, would he have gotten Mitt's help? Of course not.

Gov. Romney is the genuine article and this story is just one example where he has demonstrated outstanding compassion and eagerness to help others.

This particular event regarding Robert Gay's 14-year-old daughter is recounted in some greater detail at the beginning of an article written by Ronald Kessler for NewsMax Magazine in April, 2007 (see "Romney to the Rescue").

Disappeared from where? how? Don't we need more information than that before "we" allow our heart strings to be tugged? Does anyone have additional information on this story?

Obviously, this is an example of a man who puts people first. As a parent, I can appreciate Mitt Romney's principled approach to family. One look at the family of each of the candidates is proof enough, but this story reinforces the point. I have long hoped for a President that I can encourage my children to look up too and I'm heartened by how much Govenor Romney has been able to accomplish in whatever he has decided to pursue.
Go Mitt - fight through this messed up polictical/media driven dog fight and win the Presidency!

Doesn't Gay support usually hurt republicans?

I wonder why folks who don't like Romney are so against him. A friend's daughter was in danger. As the man in charge, Mitt forced everyone to help. You might not like him for other reasons, but his priorities are obvious. It's interesting that the media and negative commentators have to spin Mitt's record. One look at the Huckster's record will show that IT needs no spin.

Deseretian:

Yes, but does Mitt's continual alignment with the homosexual/Gay agenda really help him?

Hugh Hewitt's book "A Mormon in the Whitehouse" gets into this story as well as many others from Mitt's life.

I'm grateful that this story is being told. I believe Mr. Romney to be altruistic in his determination to help save an ailing country. To bare his whole life like he is doing and to put up with all the "crap" being dished out is amazing to me.

I believe that he has the ability to put this country back on the right track, to audit the government from top to bottom, to protect the American people, and to reestablish a sense of patriotism and selflessness.

Yes Mitt Romney can do that!

Scott -

Yes, Mitt Romney is a man of great principle! He saw a set of twins on TV and changed his position on abortion. He cried when the Mormons finally freed their slaves in 1978. He is truly a great man - second only to Hugh Hewitt himself, of course.

I think this is yet another example (not that I needed one) of Romney's focus and ability to get things done. I have a great deal of respect for his concrete accomplishments. And he seems to be devoting the same sort of drive and skill to winning the presidency.
The thing is, I don't think he really has a lot of firmly held political beliefs (other than 'I should win'). A vote for Romney is very much a vote for managerial competence over ideology. Which is actually a popular option with voters, though not to everyone's taste.

You know my Mom used to tell me that the devil doesn't go into "Bars, gambling establishments and such places" to tempt people because he already has them. He goes into the churches, the homes, the charities to try and take from them the good parts of their lives. If a candidate has more success than another and is being attacked on every side....it well be that he is the man we want for President. Good men will always be attacked by men of less integrity and valor. I am talking about character being attacked and not records. I hope the candidates keep comparing records. We cannot make sound judgements without them.

Wendy73:

Yes, but didn't Mitt Romney cry when the Mormons freed their slaves in 1978? And now I read this post that confirms that he is indeed pro-Gay, and I am very troubled.

Who cares what Hugh Hewitt has to say about Romney. He is a Mitt sycophant.

No doubt much of what Mitt says makes me throw up in my mouth. To me, he's one of the falsest politicians I've ever seen. But, this is one hell of an ad. Makes the man look compassionate. Would he have gone to such great lengths for someone who wasn't a partner at the firm? And does this say anything about how he'd treat the children of those he doesn't know personally? His policies still seem pretty lousy. But to give him his due, this probably cancels out the whole dog-tied-to-the-roof-of-the-car-incident.

Romney has a pretty good history as a decent guy who tries to do the right thing. Not an unfeeling Mitt-Bot, IMO.
He has done other acts of kindness and was cited as governor for rescuing a family of 6 and their dog on Lake Winnipesaukee when the family's boat suddenly sank, riding out with 2 of his sons on jet skis. In business, he took heat from opponents for shedding jobs at some of his turnarounds, but responded that in the end, in each of his years, he created more jobs than were lost and saved some businesses from going belly-up with no jobs.
In the Governorship and in the Olympics, he took no salary, forgoing almost 3.5 million bucks, plus donated millions of his own money. One of the rare ones who is frugal with his money in his personal life, but generous with others.

And very smart.

The message I take from this is simply that Mitt cares a lot about big-shot investment bankers and their families. If Robert Gay wasn't a partner at Bain Capital, would he have gotten Mitt's help? Of course not.

Sour grapes.
People help those they are in proximity to 1st, including employees. To say that his act of kindness and concern is negated because he didn't also shut down his company to look in Lima for a missing Peruvian kid or his rescue on a lake of a boatwrecked family was BS because he didn't also rescue fat kids in Phoenix drowning in a sea of fast food - is silly logic.

By his life and actions, Mitt appears to be a generous, decent, competent guy. A very admired person according to people that have dealt with him.

In a climate where some are reflexive haters of "the opposition" what is so wrong with crediting a man or woman with good deeds, good accomplishments? Why is it so unbearable to some? Why not credit Obama with being a great speaker and an inspiration to many? Or laud Fred Thompson on a long, varied, and successful life in all the fields he has chosen to apply himself to? Why the urge to demonize Mitt?

My recollection of this "disappearance" is that the daughter ran away.

(Not that it has any impact on the rest of this story, though.)

For those who didn't catch my post yesterday, I'm trying to decide between two candidates: Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. It's really tough to decide. Both candidates have comparable educational backgrounds that qualify them to lead the United States (Huckabee's 2.5-year bachelor degree in religion from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia is roughly equivalent to Romney's cum laude law degree and Baker scholar MBA degree from Harvard, right?). Both candidates served as governors of states that face equally complex problems (Arkansas, with its population of 2.8 million and gross state product of $87 billion, is pretty much the same as Massachusetts, with its population of 6.4 million and gross state product of $318 billion, right?). Both candidates have pre-political experience that qualify them to be President (Huckabee was a pastor of several Southern Baptist churches in Arkadelphia, Texarkana, and Pine Bluff, Arkansas and served as president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention; no doubt equal to Romney's founding and taking of Bain Capital from a $37M fund to a $50B fund in 20 years and rescuing the 2002 Olympics). And both have wives and children that would make a great First Family (compare Huckabee family photo at http://rubechat.kfan.com/forums/thread/2297213.aspx with Romney family photo at http://blog.electromneyin2008.com/about-mitt-romney/ ). So you can see why I am having such a difficult time making up my mind . . .

Putting compassion aside, what the ad demonstrates is leadership and problem solving.

Remarkable to see how cynical some people are. Criticizing an act of compassion (i.e. helping a friend) somehow isn't good enough for them?

Mitt has accomplished far more in his life than any of you ever will. I find there is a strong jealousy of him by losers. "He seems too perfect". Knocks against his wealth - as if that's a bad thing. I think that he and his family seem so happy really bothers the miserable amongst us (who have a penchant for writing ugly comments on the Internet). I guess when people want to believe the worst about someone, nothing else matters.

Yes - how dare the man make a lot of money, succeed at things he attempts, be happy, and have a nice, loving, principled family! Ghastly! Why would America want someone like THAT to lead them? God forbid.

I don't know Mitt Romney. Maybe he's a sly maipulative fake b@st@rd. Maybe he's a warm, compassionate, caring man. Probably a bit of both at times, just like the rest of us, i.e. a human being. Given that I do not know the man personally, I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt. Not my first choice for POTUS (Fed is), but still, he seems like a good, smart, and very capable person. Very positive too.

The GOP is lucky to have so many men who can lead the country: Guiliani, McCain, Thompson, Romney. I could see any of those 4 being a much better POTUS than Bush and Clinton were, and far superior to any of the Dem candidates.

Mitt is amazing.

He does do the impossible.

We need Mitt in the Whitehouse.

This isn't the first time Mitt's done things like this. As I recall...there was also a big traffic jam during the Olympic games. Mitt gets out and starts directing traffic. That's just who he is.

I also think many can appreciate how he helped a San Diego fire victim one morning, just got up with his son while they were in San Diego and went and helped out during his busy schedule, sans the press and cameras. This isn't phony stuff, the man is not plastic, this guy actually walks the walk. He didn't get to where he is by not DOING...out of any of the candidates, he's the one that I believe will actually do what he says.

http://confessionsofapoliticaljunkie.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-often-do-candidates-do-stuff-like.html

Mitt is awesome. He is head and shoulders above any of the other REpublican candidates, and DEFINITELY above the inexperienced Democrats. He is the only candidate that gives me hope for an improved economy. I believe that he will command more respect as POTUS than any one else; I can picture him in meetings with heads of state, WAY more than I can picture Rudy.... or Fred..... or the Huckster... and more than McCain for sure..... People making cynical comments about his ad are just that - negative, pathetic cynics.

The critics of Mitt here reminds me of those crabs in a bucket. When someone climbs the ladder of success they try to pull him down. What bothers you when someone seems too perfect in all that he does? Don't we all want to be successful in life? So his family is too perfect too? Goodness, why not try to be like him in one way or another for your own future instead of trying to pull him down? Maybe we're so used to other leaders who all looked the same until Mitt shows up. Mitt even said he's not perfect, that he's normal like any of us. The difference between many of us and Mitt is that he accomplished his goals while some of us are sitting in the corner for a miracle. Get out of your comfortable corner and by going through the trials and tests of life can we reach our full potentials.

I don't understand why the attacks on Mitt are personal. If you disagree with his politics, that is one thing. But to just hate the man for being successful or his religion is stupid. I would give almost anything to be as successful as he is. He has put his whole life on the political stage to be disected by the media and people. And he has not once been accused of a scandal. Hmmm. He is a wonderful candidate and a good person.

And for Democrats Against Hillary, just because the man's last name is Gay does not mean anything. Don't be such a moron or assume other that read this are and will jump to the stupid conclusion you must want us to do.

Mitt is the real deal. I've met him twice and studied his life and his positions. He is not a flip flopper. He is principled in everyway. Flip flopping is when one goes back and forth. Waffles. With Mitt its continuous improvement and progression in a world full of complexities. We need his mental, spiritual and physical strength to lead us into the future. Let's get on his train and move forward in the right direction. By far he is the most capable of any candidate. His capacity and willingness to serve the American people uniquely qualify him for being President. Truthfully, there is no better candidate to run our country at this critical time.GO MITT!!!

Mitt is correct about there being a lot of lost souls in New York City; but that in no way is a slap against the town.

Be that as it may, anyone would be much better off wandering around the NYC of the 1990's, under Rudy, than in the NYC of the 1970's or 1980's.
No question about that. In the 70's and 80's there were plenty of places where the police
and fire-fighters were afraid to go; this is no longer the case. The irony, well, tragedy, is
that if you look at the level of violent deaths in NYC over the last 10 years you are forced to remove 9/11 from your statistics or else you would get an entirely wrong picture of things.
