McCain: Genie Is Back In The Bottle, Campaign Asserts

03 Dec 2007 04:30 pm

According to an internal campaign memo needlessly marked confidential and distributed to New Hampshire staff today, John McCain is poised for a precipitous rise in the polls and has with a month to go, hit his stride in the Granite State. "He's BAAAACk," writes Mike Dennehy, McCain's national political director and de-facto New Hampshire campaign runner.

mccainmemoc.JPG

Dennehy finds good news in the cross-tabs of a recent Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll, including the fact that "McCain is the second choice of 45% of Romney Voters."

Though McCain is seen by New Hampshire Republicans as able to mount less of a challenge to Hillary Clinton than Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney, Dennehy argues that McCain is best able to keep the "Reagan conservative" coalition together.

And he asserts that Giuliani faces a national electability problem: "Rudy Giuliani puts states that are normally reliable electoral votes such as Virginia at risk – a state that John McCain leads significantly."

Interestingly, Dennehy warns his staff to expect "vicious, negative" advertising from Mitt Romney:

Because Romney can’t afford to lose New Hampshire, we expect he will stop at nothing to win. And that unfortunately is likely to include some vicious, negative television advertising. We know that New Hampshire voters reject negative campaigning and will see through this desperate attempt, but we need to prepared for these attacks and expose them when they hit.

RE: McCAIN IS BAAAAAAACK!!!!!!

As John McCain wrote when filing his papers with the Secretary of State in New Hampshire last month – “I’m Baaaaack”! That prophetic statement has never been truer than today.

Three very significant developments have happened recently in New Hampshire that I wanted to bring to your attention. Senator McCain recently earned the endorsement of the New Hampshire Union Leader, a recent poll was released by Fox News showing McCain gaining and Romney losing support, and the energy on the ground in New Hampshire is at the level we saw in 2000. These are all very significant factors and when taken collectively might determinative of the final result of the New Hampshire primary.

Union Leader Endorsement
The New Hampshire Union Leader is the largest and ONLY statewide newspaper and pundits view the paper as the most important endorsement in the state. The Union Leader is conservative through and through. This is probably the single most important event that has happened in the 2008 Presidential campaign – for ANY candidate. The Union Leader endorsement is absolutely essential and is a big victory for John McCain over the other candidates. This endorsement cannot be overstated.

New Hampshire Polling
There have been a number of polls that have been released recently that show Senator McCain’s resurgence in New Hampshire into a strong second to Mitt Romney, slightly ahead of Rudy Giuliani. Fox News released the most recent poll on November 29th.

Fox News Poll of New Hampshire 500 Republican Primary Voters (November 27-29)
Mitt Romney 29%
John McCain 21%
Rudy Giuliani 19%
Mike Huckabee 7%***C O N F I D E N T I A L***

Ron Paul 4%
Fred Thompson 4%

There are some very important clues in the cross tabs for this poll:
• McCain is the second choice of 45% of Romney Voters
Mitt Romney’s artificial lead in Iowa evaporated as other candidates began working the state and the same thing is now happening in New Hampshire. Over the summer Mitt Romney was the only game in town in terms of paid advertising and direct mail. In fact, reports indicate he has spent nearly $5 MILLION DOLLARS on advertising trying to win over New Hampshire voters. Now that other campaigns are spending money and the voters are finally engaged, the race will tighten and Romney will lose some level of support.
• War in Iraq/Homeland Security Top Issue of GOP Primary Voters
National security issues continue to outweigh domestic issues and that plays to Senator McCain’s strengths.
• Only 7% Currently believe McCain has the best chance to beat Hillary
McCain’s weakest point in the poll is actually one of his greatest strengths. Senator McCain is the only candidate who can keep together the Reagan coalition of conservative Republicans, independents, and conservative democrats that has proven successful in important swing states for decades. The recent Rasmussen survey showed that Senator McCain leads Senator Clinton by two points whereas Rudy Giuliani trails her by six in national polling. Survey USA swing-state polls clearly show that while Rudy Giuliani performs well in more liberal states that are not winnable by a Republican such as New York and California, Senator McCain tends to do much better than Giuliani in important swing states that decide the general election. Senator McCain is the only candidate who leads in important swing states such as Ohio and Iowa and performs better than Giuliani in almost every other swing state polled. Furthermore, Rudy Giuliani puts states that are normally reliable electoral votes such as Virginia at risk – a state that John McCain leads significantly. For more information please visit johnmccain.com/electability.
Over the next few weeks, we are confident the voters of New Hampshire will be convinced that Senator McCain is the strongest potential nominee and as a result his numbers will rise considerably. Senator McCain is in an excellent position to turn his strongest negative into his biggest asset very quickly.

• Honest/Trustworthy is Most Important Characteristic
McCain dominates among voters who are looking for someone who is most honest/trustworthy, which happens to be the most important characteristic. This is going to become more and more important as voters realize that Mitt Romney has essentially changed his position on every major issue and is willing to say and do anything to get elected. This is an excellent position for John McCain relative to Mitt Romney – particularly once Romney goes negative which he already has in Iowa and South Carolina.

New Hampshire Energy Reborn
The talk of the town across New Hampshire is that John McCain is back! The energy level is the highest we have seen since 2000 and the phones are ringing off the hook at the office with people wanting to volunteer and be a part of the New Hampshire victory campaign. John McCain feels the energy, campaign staff feels the energy, supporters feel the energy, and yes, even the press has begun to report on Senator McCain’s energy in New Hampshire. The genie is back in the bottle.

New Hampshire voters love John McCain and as they become more and more confident that he is the same, strong candidate he was in 2000, who will once and for all reform Washington DC, he will continue to rise in the polls.

BE ON ALERT FOR GUTTER POLITICS TO BEGIN
As many of you have already seen, Mitt Romney has been attacking Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee as his lead in Iowa evaporates. With John McCain’s numbers rising in New Hampshire, and with the coveted Union Leader endorsement hitting people’s newspaper tubes today, we have to be ready for Romney to aim his limitless pocketbook our way.

Conclusion
Senator McCain is back and is in position to win the New Hampshire primary against a terminally flawed Mitt Romney and a problematic Giuliani candidacy. As voters continue to learn that the McCain resurgence is real and that he is the best candidate to defeat Hillary Clinton he will continue to surge because he has character, integrity, and the trust of the people of New Hampshire AND the country! John McCain is baaack and is on track to win New Hampshire. Thank you again for all you do, and have done for John. As he often says and reminds me, he will be eternally grateful for your efforts.

Wow... he's the 2nd choice of 45% of the voters who support someone else!

Personally, I'm impressed... what about you?

Run for Secretary of Defense. Go Mitt!!

Hello-

Great that you put the entire text up there. I have it re-posted at my own site (as Part 1, due to its length). In Part 2, I'll analyze it a bit...)

Fiscal Cons and libertarian Republicans are too suspicious of McCain. I think it's more likely with Huckabee's rise, it's going to scare the "Club for Growth/WSJ wing" of the GOP out of its wits, and they're going to all line up behind Giuliani now. Any wayward Fiscal con support that was going to Fred Thompson or Romney might come home to Rudy in the coming weeks.

We might even see some Ron Paul libertarian types scared to death of fiscal populist Huckabee, switching to Rudy.

Yawn, New Hampshire is already in firm support of Paul, and the greatest thing about a Ron Paul supporter:

They believe in freedom, and the message the man says, not the man.

they're not voting for a candidate their voting for a new frame of thought.

a frame of thought that New Hampshire residents are all to friendly with already.

Once you go Ron Paul, you don't go back.

Rudy doesn't stand anything anywhere, and as for McCain...

the guy can't pool together squat, a few years ago maybe, he's lost his touch, he's become a divise and bitter old man.

These United States want Ron Paul, and heres why they'll elect him:

Paul's message is that of personal liberty, foreign affairs that are based on using history and economics to understand what's going on. small and limited government, and of course a better spending policy, namely, not spending, and thus not taxing to not spend.

people hate taxes, hate the government interfering in our lives, some of us have become so afraid that we think we need the government to help us, WE DON'T! and new hampshire knows that best!

LIVE FREE OR DIE!

Ron Paul? Are you as crazy as he is? In case you havn't noticed, his numbers are lower than Bush's IQ, and they ain't coming back. McCain has shown to be the only candidate thus far who is a man of honesty and integrity--and isn't completely nuts. I don't always agree with McCain, but at least I trust that he's doing what he believes is right for this country. Other than Huckabee at this point, I just don't trust the rest of the GOP field.

Ron Paul for Surgeon General. That way he can wear a uniform for the first time and try to get his supporters to stop smoking weed. You have to be delusional to believe he will make it anywhere. Might be a McCain/Huckabee ticket, the only way to take on Clinton.

MichaelSchuyler,

You should educate yourself before you open your big mouth... The Good Doctor Ron Paul is one of the few GOP candidates who actually HAS worn a uniforn (a rarity for a GOP congressman/senator in it's own right, let alone their Presidential candidates!!!).

Dr. Paul's Military Service:

* Flight Surgeon, United States Air National Guard, 1965-1968
* Flight Surgeon, United States Air Force, 1963-1965

http://www.ronpaulforcongress.com/assets/images/uniform.jpg

Ron Paul is irrelevant. That's coming from a self described 'libertarian-conservative' too. McCain will keep the Reagan Coalition together and actually accomplish something as President. He may not be the most conservative on every last issue, but he is honest and that counts almost as much, if not more. On paper Bush was supposed to be conservative but he lied to his on party and let spending get out of control.

McCain is the last best hope for America.

Are YOU a complete idiot, GreenGuy? You seem to imply that Ron Paul is the only person in the race who has worn a uniform. This is a John McCain site.

Wow. Ron Paul Supporters are even crazier than I thought

TalkinTrout... I clearly said "one of the few", no? And one would think someone who is reading Marc's blog is more than politically savy to know Sen. McCain's distinguished record, no?

And btw, I didn't know this was a "John McCain site"

McCain is a irrelevant double talk express and a war monger who wants to continue the war and send more of our young kids to Iraq to die.

I switched from Demacrat to Republican party in 2000 so I could vote for McCain over Bush in the Ohio Primary, It was too late by then as our screwed up primary system in this country had already given the nom to bush by March. I said I was a McCain Republican.
Well let me me tell you , I don;t think John is a straight talker anymore, he once was before being bought by the neocons and the religious right. So I must say he has lost my support.
SO to Talkintrout and the other fellow supporters of an Illegal War I say this :
Go Sign up! Hey if your under 43, the army will take you right in, hell they will promise you 10 to 20 grand signing bonus if you sign for more than four years, Hey Trout thats alot of bait, don't ya think. Who cares if you got to live in one room for a year plus, drink bottled water ( no alcohol allowed) and take a chance of blowing your balls off from an IED when you step out to take a leak, It's all for freedom, yea freedom for Iraq who by the way are the same people who planted that bomb that just blew your balls off.
SO the next comment we want to read is trout and his buddies will be running to the recruiters office today with flags in there hand to sign up to spread the American Way. OOOH RAH!
RONPAUL2008
R LAST HOPE FOR AMERICA

Ron Paul who?

You are off the mark...just looking at Gov Romney and the Strategic Problem solver he is would be enough to have me vote for him. When Gov Romney has served his church, he never was living off of the members' collections (preachers are always worried about the Mormons because the Mormon pulpit doesn't have a paid clergy). Yet, despite the negative advertising from some of the pulpits around this country, this faith seems to be growing at an extremely fast pace, and the Mormons seem to have great values and strong family life to back up what they truly represent. Example is a very powerful thing...and the Mormons I've seen are amazing people.

When you look at the field of candidates, you see a bunch of candidates who keep running for office their entire life, with no clear record of accomplishment. With our nation being challenged on the World Economic Front, we need a decisive leader that is a proven "Doer," and best proven performer our nation has to provide. Gov Romney clearly is that man....he's the smartest man in the race on both sides of the race.

Look at the rest of the Republican field:

Huckabee--what's he done? He's been a preacher on the take or a Gov employee on the take most of his entire adult life. Not a proven doer, a definite tax and spender. We lived in Arkansas, we know the Tyson Chicken connection under Clinton/Huckabee. Good luck if you think that's the fix.

Guilani--a Johnny one-note. On Sep 10th, 2001, what had he done? Talk with the firefighters who had no proper radios as the buildings came tumbling down....why? In addition, if a politician can't keep his private life straight, how can he solve our nations' huge problems we face now. Funny, you never hear Romney brag the way that Guiliani and McCain do on his accomplishments. He doesn't have to...the man's performance stands for it's self.

McCain--not a hero, a survivor. Plain and simple, Sen McCain is not smart enough to be President...at the Naval Academy, he graduated at the very bottom of his class. He's been in Gov ever since his return from Vietnam and he has been "no Barry Goldwater," face it. His positions on Immigration are way out of line and his McCain/Feingold legislation is a disaster to the Republican party and created an attack culture of 527 groups with all the money and no responsibility to tell us where the attacks are coming from? We will continue to lose elections because of his failed leadership.

Fred Thompson--Absolutely no proven track record.

Democratic Candidates: Can you spell "noda." Tax and spend won't protect our nation from the global competition we face, period!

So why Romney! He has a proven record of accomplishment: Kramer on Finances says, "Mitt is the smartest Man in America." I agree...he's on par with Thomas Jefferson, Teddy R, John Adams and FDR. How many Pres candidates do you know are Magna Cum Laudes at Harvard as "double majors--MBA, Law" and are raising a family of 3 boys at the same time. Self made man in the private sector, has seen the world, speeks French fluently, and would make our nation proud.

I personally like what I see about the Mormons, but I don't know if the Republican Party and the Evangelicals are wanting to have a Big Enough Tent in this upcoming election. If we don't rise above the "Hate and bigotry" of a couple of threatened preachers, than we are finished as a party. Hillary will definitely win. I know Mitt won against a female in Mass and he can repeat against Hillary...I am sure.

I've now served 31 years in the military and I am proud of the Big Tent that we have within our military. I served for a couple of 4 star military generals who are Mormon...they have been the very best our nation has to offer...no doubt. We as a country need "NOW, a new set of eyes to look at how we as a nation do our business...I am not so worried about the Middle East and that conflict; my travels overseas tell me there's a huge Global Competition that America needs to wake up to and realize we as a nation are facing a huge set of challenges. Our status as a global power could be in jeopardy because of the decisions we face today. Who's running that can insure America remains a power of good..who will keep America safe, and be smart enough to recognize these challenges. Gov Romney's private sector experience and the Gov's proven track record of making the right choices will insure American remains on top with the global competition we face.

Only one person I see: Gov Mitt Romney!

Ok Doug ,
First of all , let me thank you for your 31 years oh service for our country, Even more kudos to you because you didn't retire at 20 as I think you could of.
Ok here is my take of Romney , Please listen with an open mind, First yes he has that degree from Harvard, But Bill Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar, supposedly times smarter. Would you vote for Bill Clinton.
Next While I don't have a hard time with a Morman in the White House, Did you know that Rommney's Grandparents ran to mexico in exile because they were polygamist his dad George Romney was actually born in Ol' Mexico. And dear ol dad was a powerhouse in politics , Governor of Michigan, presidential candidate in 68 yada yada yada. So I don't think Mitt's Money was self made , you know what I mean Doug.
Finally Romney has 5 boys not three ( take five minutes on Google and do your research Doug) .
Now Doug you are about my age so do you have any kids? I have a 18 year old boy and I worry every day that the US will bring back the draft to support all these Illegal Agressions in the Mid East. Don't get me wrong I would probably encourage him to sign up if there was a direct threat to the security of this great country.
Mitt Romney wants to double the size of Guantanamo and double troop size in the mid east under the auspice of the "war on terror". So have you sent your kids down to sign up, Doug? I'm sure you have . When Romney was asked by the press what his 5 boys ( all fighting age) have done for the war effort, he said and I quote: My boys are helping America's war effort by working for my campiagn". Working for his campiagn AS to getting the top of your head replaced by the latest in plastic skull technology because you just ran over an IED in Baghdad in an unarmoured jeep. Now that's sacrifice Mr. Romney!
Do yourself and your country a favor ( do it again with my thanks ) and GOOGLE Ron Paul , oh that's Doctor Ron Paul ( he's delivered over 4000 babies, I think you need a degree for that) and find out that revolution is not about the man it's the movement towards restoring our counntry back to the constitutional law that our founding framers built it on.
And that movement is moving FAST!!!!!

I am interested to hear evidence of Mr. McCain "selling out to the neocons and religious right". I have seen none of this, other than the fact that he is trying to appeal a little more to those in the latter group. Anyone who followed his 2000 campaign understands that not getting the religious right vote hurt him severely in that campain, and was one of the reasons he lost to Bush. He is promoting himself more as a conservative this time around, but if you look at many of his stances, he continues to be more of a maverick than people give him credit for. And anyone who is saying that McCain isn't a hero obviously doesn't know the entirety of his ordeal in Vietnam. I would look into it further before making rash statements.

Those that do not favor campaign finance reform obviously enjoy special interests dominating our government, which is truly sad. It's a shame that a guy like McCain who is one of the few trying to clean up politics in Washinton takes a hit for something like McCain-Feingold. And this is a bill that lawyers have rendered almost completely useless through loopholes and litigation over the last few years, keep in mind.

Do I think Ron Paul has integrity? Yes, I do, and that's the best compliment I can pay a politician. Do I think Paul has a chance to get the nomination? Not in the least, and if you watched the last debate where he came off like a paranoid crazy, then you can see why.

This Blog is getting good ,
Ok Realistic, same question.
Do you have kids within the age for military service? And Have you sent them down to the recruiters office to sign up for a tour in Iraq?
Please let us all know the answer and what sevice they joined so we can thank them! John McCain wants to stay the course in Iraq and he has a son going over there. If that is what he belives in so be it, DO you believe in the war in Iraq and soon Iran, Realistic? (I have an eighteen year old son and I don't) We will be waiting for your answer.
As for Ron Paul getting elected. If the main stream media would give him air time and positive coverage and they won't because their corparate (very rich) bosses are scared then more people would look into the movement towards restoring the Constitution ( remember that thing ?)and Ron Paul would be a shoe in. Again Realistic it's not the man it's the movement. You want to get disgusted? Watch "Freedom to Facisim" by Arron Russo on YouTube.com. Go Ahead , I DARE YOU
Then tell me who is Paranoid!!!!

Freddy,

To answer your question, no, I don't have kids who are that age. I do however have two family members currently in Iraq, and have 6 close friends who are either in Iraq or Afghanistan, or have recently returned. So the war has been all around me and those close to me for some time. The message I get from those who fight is that they want to leave Iraq when the mission is accomplished, and no sooner. When Mr. McCain says that is his goal as well, I have no problem with it. To leave the country before something resembling order has been restored would only lead to more chaos in the country. Were we wrong to get involved in this war? All signs point to yes at this point, but to cause as much disarray as we have, and then leave before cleaning up our mess would be a mistake on many levels. as for the "war in Iran", the reports that were made public yesterday seem to have put to rest any thoughts of military action in that country (for the time being, that is). And I believe McCain when he says that military action would be a last resort, which would differ from the current president's theory on warmaking.

Now, do I feel sorry for our troops who are fighting this war? I do to an extent, but on the other hand, they knew the dangers when they signed up, and it's not as if they were drafted into this thing. And anyone I have talked to who has fought in this war has said the exact same thing.

Ron Paul's ideas are too radical for them to catch on with the mainstream of America (the media included). And to be honest, I think most Americans are looking for someone who can be a uniter, and I'm afraid Mr. Paul does not seem to fit that description as a candidate. In my opinion, his ideas would only serve to polarize this nation further, and that's not what we need.

i think all of you guys are dhum as*sholes

The House just past HR 1955 last week , Some of us just became criminals by having having negative thoughts towards our country. HR 1955 will be the foot in the door against a free and inregulated internet as "terroists" ( that's what they call us because we support free speech ) can use it to THINK bad things about OUR (yea right) government. Smoke'em while you can boys , Big Brother is on the way to passing legislation to take free speech on the web away FOREVER! Yea I know you think I am a nut , hey but don't think the government is because that's a violation of HR 1955 and Your BUSTED!
