Romney On Huckabee's Crime Record

17 Dec 2007 02:45 pm

This is a very tough television ad from Mitt Romneyairing in Iowa today. (Hat tip: The Page)

The ads start with the familiar epanaphoric sentences: "Two pro-life governors..."

As in: hey: Romney is also a social conservative. Don't let Huckabee bamboozle you. Here's what you don't know about it. Don't worry: you won't risk anything by supporting Romney.

As the Page says, it plays the Clemency card, the Meth card -- a huge issue in Iowa -- and the murderer card.

The first sentance is a lie. Mitt Romney was not a pro-life Governor. He was a pro-choice Governor, we have the youtubes to prove it too.

False. You have the U-tubes to show that Romney was a moderate like Rudy when he ran for Governor. Personally opposed to abortion, but not in favor of restricting other's choices. But as governor, he changed. To strongly anti-stem cell cloning, to a Federalist position where not only was abortion morally wrong, it should go back to the States to let people and their reps decide and the Court usurped the power they did not have Constitutionally in legislating Roe from the bench.

When Romney served as Goveror, he evolved to pro-life. Not extreme - he knows the public is against ending all abortion, but as a moral goal we can strive for.

The Meth angle is very interesting.

How did he "govern"? If he governed as a pro choice governor then he was, if not then he wasn't.

He veto'd stem cell research.
He veto'd state funding of abortion and providing morning after pills, and their availability w/o a doctors prescription.
He kept abortion out of Mass's covered health insurance expenses in a big fight with Teddy and "pro-choicers".
He promoted abstenance education in public schools.
He vowed to never appoint lawyers who would legislate from the bench, and largely did except in compromises with the Dems that controlled all seats in the US Congress from Massachusetts and most of the Mass Assemble that had perks on nominations.

Of the 36 lawyers Romney nominated, 23 were registered Democrats or independents who donated to Democratic candidates or voted in Democratic primaries, according to a Boston Globe analysis that was circulated by rival Fred Thompson. Two appointees supported expanding gay rights.

Mitt Romney is a liberal. People at gun chatrooms and blogs found out yesterday. They are livid over Romney's statements vis a vis guns on Meet The Press. Don't mess with the NRA. Thankfully, everyone is slowly discovering just how liberal Mitt really is.

You're all idiots....

I just think it's hilarious that a pro-life idealogue can't even spell abstinence.

Good luck in 2012....the GOP has a really crappy bunch of candidates.

(And yes...I know how to spell my name)

While you're so busy obsessing about gays and abortion, you're missing the big, sad picture: you have no viable candidate. This is living proof that "conservatism" should express itself through pressure groups not political parties.

This video will piss you off.

Huckabee is not qualified to be president. Period. His pardons and amensties were reckless and got people killed.

No Huckapardons for Mitt Romney. He had zero pardons. Tough love you might say. Oh wait, a pardon for Scooter Libby is okay according to Mitt. Okay, I thought Scooter did not need to go to jail either. I can live with that, but

Mitt Romney denied a Mass Iraq veteran who won the Bronze Star a pardon because he was convicted of shooting another kid with a BB gun when he was 13 year old (it did not break the skin). The guy had been in no problems since and wanted to join the police force when he got out of Iraq.

This friggin frosts me. I am not saying Mitt Romney is not qualified for President. But I am voting for other qualified GOP candidates over him. Thompson, McCain, Giulaini.

Anyone else get the feeling that "AJ" and Chris Ford might actually work/volunteer for their respective candidates. Who else would have all of those talking points at their fingertips.

Hmm.

...Personally opposed to abortion, but not in favor of restricting other's choices.

Exactly. In other words, Romney was pro-choice. By your definition Giuliani and Cuomo, too, are "pro-life." In common, universally-agreed upon political parlance in the US, "pro-life" means thinking that fetuses deserve the protection of the law. It means, in other words, "restricting others' choices" by making them at least some of the time illegal.

If you really want to make the argument you're making, you should say something along the lines of "Mitt personally was pro-life, but realized this stance wouldn't help in ultra-liberal Massachusetts." I doubt he's "personally" been either pro-life or pro-choice. I think he doesn't really care one way or the other, except for how his stance affects his career. But at least the option I outline has the benefit of plausibility.

I won't vote for either the Mittbott or Suckabee. But if I had to choose, I think I'd opt for the plastic but at least competent striver over a guy who thinks the universe is 6,000 years old. With a little luck the McCain boomlet will continue, and the Republic will be assured of dodging the particularly dangerous bullet the GOP is apparently capable of firing in 2008.

Take a look at this murderer walking the streets because he "came to Jesus" Huck let him walk free.

This is not the Dumond rapist/murder case, but it's just as bad.

mmm. I love popcorn. Bring the beer hon, this is getting fun!

Hot buttered popcorn!

Ron Paul is the only true conservative in the race from either party. Barry Goldwater would have supported him, and he ws the father of modern conservatism, i.e. classical liberalism.

This is hilarious. Really, one day you right wingers will wake up and realize that while you've been obsessing over letting teh gays marry, and whether or not women should have the right to choose, and while you've been focused on just how perfectly ideologically pure a candidate should be, the country has gone to hell in a handcart and all serious discussion of policy is gone. All you can do now parse out whether someone is pro life or pro choice (figured out how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?) and whether or not the fact he appointed so and so to such and such board means he's a dirty liberal.

"Personally opposed to abortion, but not in favor of restricting other's choices."

I guess that would make my parents pro-life. I can't wait to tell them, they'll be shocked.
