Romney: "When It Wasn't Politically Correct..."

07 Dec 2007 01:59 pm

Mitt Romney's latest ad is aimed squarely at social conservatives in New Hampshire. It pokes at a bundle of resentments against the elites, and claims Romney isn't one of them willy-weak-kneed PC types. Instead, he speaks his mind...

Wow. It's all very Rovian: tout as your greatest strength what the CW says is your greatest weakness. If the other GOPers had any cojones whatsoever, they'd spoof this ad tomorrow.

"Marriage must come before children."

Snark #1:

So, what is he suggesting, should we have forced abortions for all pregnant unmarried women.

Snark #2:

If I recall my New Testament correctly, Jesus was born to Mary before she was married. Clearly, God is Un-American.

Look who is talking!

Romney is a flipflopping bigot. After the lifetime of flipflops he is talking about political correctness. He is a shameless politician for sure.

An incredibly ballsy and Rovian claim, indeed. Can't wait to see whether his rivals call him on it.

DK: Let's be clear: flip-flop implies changing a position multiple times. Romney flipped on abortion, no doubt. But he did not flop.

It is a completely defensible position to state that over time you've become convinced that your position is wrong and you have changed your mind. When Republicans move left, the media calls this "growing" or "maturing".

Whether this flip is to believed as a true change or politically expedient is the key question. The timing certainly doesn't help Romney. But if we're going to move beyond the soundbite political culture that we've built -- and the ad above certainly plays that game -- and instead have rational discussions about the candidates, let's set aside the hyperventilation and speak to each other as adults.
