The Daily Five: Will Crist Endorse?

13 Dec 2007 06:17 pm

1. Hillary Clinton visits New Hampshire, spends a day in Iowa, and one in Washington, D.C...then plans a five-day bus tour in Iowa next week. ...Obama, Edwards continue bus tours.......Giuliani will step up campaign appearences next week, his fundraising schedule mostly finished for the year. He's in Florida this weekend...Huckabee is in New Hampshire.

2. Rumors abound that Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) is going to endorse a presidential candidate next week, but knowledgeable Republicans say he will not.....amendment banning same-sex marriage in Florida qualifies for November 2008 ballot..... As candidate Ron Paul flies two Arkansas legislators to Iowa to make the case against Huckabee, Huckabee marhsals four Arkansas Republicans to respond....AP story bylined Little Rock, AR says Huckabee's "women's rights record is called into question....".....Mitt Romney now calls himself the underdog in Iowa....Giuliani promises to "end illegal immigration" in new NH ad...

3. In an extraordinary display of campaign muscle, the Obama campaign claims to have organized 1,000 precinct parties in Iowa tonight to watch a rebroadcast of the Des Moines Register debate....Markos calls Sen. Barack Obama the true anti-Hillary, and some of his readers aren't happy..,...Obama manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail: "If 5,000 people donate in the next 24 hours, we can show their campaign that we reject this kind of divisive politics. Make your donation of $25 now."

4. A long line of angry journalists waited for an hour in the Iowa cold while U.S. Secret Service and Iowa state police conduct delayed security sweep of the Iowa Public Television complex today. Sweep wasn't finished until a mere one hour, fifteen minutes before the broadcast, and one only dog was used to reece the building. In the middle of the sweep, a a tree branch fell into a power line, which blew out a circuit breaker, shutting power to the complex for twenty minutes until a generator was discovered. For the second time this cycle, members of the Secret Service's Uniform Division operated magnetometers at entrances. Lucky journalists who arrived at the site three hours early were allowed to stay indoors and had early access to a catered lasagna lunch. CNN's Candy Crowley does a live shot from the darkened bat cave of a spin room.

5. "Pro-Life Groups Head To New Hampshire To Oppose Abortion, Rudy Giuliani."

Pro-life advocates are heading to New Hampshire to take a pro-life stand against abortion as voters there prepare to head to the state's presidential primary on January 8. Meanwhile, one pro-life advocate is going to the Granite State to specifically oppose the nomination of pro-abortion Republican Rudy Giuliani. Patrick Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition tells LifeNews.com that pro-life advocates are headed to the second presidential battleground state to work with local pro-life groups. They will hold an event called the New Hampshire Awakening on each of three days prior to the primary

It's actually more than 1700 precinct meetings, but who's counting...

"As candidate Ron Paul flies two Arkansas legislators to Iowa to make the case against Huckabee, Huckabee marhsals four Arkansas Republicans to respond"

Yeah, right. The source of this is an unverified and unsubstantiated claim by Randy Minton, an Eagle Forum head who hates Huckabee (as does the Eagle Forum!)

See also http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/arkansasblog/2007/12/financing_source_for_antihucka.aspx

From the original article referenced above:
"Randy Minton, a former state legislator and chairman of the conservative Eagle Forum"...

The Eagle Forum is already on record of being anti-Huckabee; see http://opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110010782

Connect the dots. The most likely suspects in this financing issue is the Eagle Forum, not Dr. Paul. Lots of reasons why:

1. Dr. Paul doesn't play like that.
2. The Eagle Forum does.
3. Minton is part of the Eagle Forum.
4. The Eagle Forum hates the Hickster.
5. The Eagle Forum doesn't care for Dr. Paul either.
6. What better way to smear two-for-one by blaming the smear of one on the other?
7. No independent verification of the claim outside of Minton.
8. If Dr. Paul's campaign is funding this, as unlikely as it is, it'll show up on the Paul FEC expense reports.

So let's see some proof that the Paul campaign is funding this. The circumstantial evidence leads to the Eagle Forum instead.

Sorry, that dog ain't hunting, and it's a non-story, just an unsubstantiated allegation.

This is great but I can't believe you don't have anything on the Mitchell Report!

That's the biggest thing. I'm shocked about some of this; I knew it was bad...but wow! My cousin was just freaking out over LoDuca who was practically a pusher for god's sake.

The Union ought to suck it up and let MLB test for HGH. I'm pro-Union but this is making me sick; they're destroying the game. A whole generation of greats their accomplishments just wiped out. And Selig needs to STFU! I was listening on NPR on my way home: "If action is needed, action will be taken" my ass. The first act ought be his ass gone. He's been so bad for baseball.

So sad. I don't know how anyone can even think about politics w/this all. I mean, I know you kinda hafta but wow. I woulda thought it'd make the five.

Obama manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail: "If 5,000 people donate in the next 24 hours, we can show their campaign that we reject this kind of divisive politics. Make your donation of $25 now."

Interesting. I've donated to Obama, and I got a different email -- mine said "Make your donation of $100 now." It's interesting that they calibrate their requests based on past donations. I'm guessing it's people who haven't donated yet who get asked for $25.

I just watched Hardball, and I feel GREAT. Thank you, Chris Matthews. I wish there were more shows like it. I cannot stand the snob Keith Obermann.

HRC/The Machine is OVER. FINISHED. END. GO AWAY. FAR AWAY. FAR FAR AWAY.

I am now convinced that Obama will be the next President. I am also convinced that Edwards could be the VP.

Yes, I feel happy. It has been so long for this moment of joy.

SUPPORT OBAMA!

Obama and Paul are going to stun people with how strong their grassroots support is, once the caucuses and primaries start.

I saw Hardball, too, eorse. The best part was watching Trippi's eyes roll whenever Penn started to talk.

I also watched Hannity and Colmes. I know, I know, but I like to flip around to all the shows, just to see what they're talking about. Anyway, tonight I'm glad I did. They had Frank Luntz on with one of his focus group segments.

He asked the group about this Shaheen thing. To a person, they all disapproved of the attack. Then the group split between those who believe Clinton was involved, and those who didn't. Many of those who didn't thought it was a bad sign that she couldn't control even her senior staff members. Some in the group looked stunned, as though they never imagined the campaign doing anything like this.

I have to admit, when I first heard the attack, I thought it was just more of the same. I didn't think this was any worse than some of the other things they've done, and really kinda thought it would come and go, like the others.

Now, seeing that focus group, it seems like these mistakes have hit a critical mass. So much so, I'm wondering tonight if Clinton is even still in the running. I really try not to over-react to this stuff, because I do realize that political winds shift in a moment. But that focus group's reaction was really something.

Pretty bad news for Democrats, as Mike Moore announced he would not run for Senate in MS, killing Democratic hopes of picking up that seat.

Giuliani promises to "end illegal immigration" in new NH ad

That's not news, he's been saying that for a while.

What's news is that not a single "reporter" will call him on that beyond-fantastic claim.

I'm beginning to think that the candidates could say the sky is green and "reporters" would just dutifully write it down before moving on the today's gaffe or scandal.

If you watched Chris Matthews and The Hannity HATE shows you need to realize that Obama has paid them dearly ,and this will backfire.
Senator Clinton will conquer these Hate mongers and Obama can go boogie on MTV with Oprah.

This country will not elect a immature, self centered,Idealist Black man.All the Powerful Black leaders have endorsed Senator Clinton and she will be the best President ever.

It's time to grow up and get over the Rock Star who is not qualified for the most important position in America.msnbc and Fox news will be forced to stop the HATE HILLARY campaign.

Dee, do you really believe Matthews and Hannity are on the Obama campaign payroll? Wow, that's some theory.
