Caucus Day: Deals?

03 Jan 2008 09:03 am

** There are reports that Bill Richardson and Joe Biden may ask their precinct captains to encourage supporters to vote for Obama if their candidate fails to make viability. So far as I can tell, Biden's team has NOT transmitted those instructions down the line, and no one in Bill Richardson's world will confirm or deny.

Richardson and Biden seem to be the type candidates who would find 'caucus dealing' a litte unseeming from the democracy perspective, so I don't think they would make an announcement rather what you just reported: a conveniently denied leak.

If those candidates what a presidential future outside Iowa, (where they aren't viable) Obama is the man to give the remaining candidates breathing room vs. Hillary.

Wow. The Iowa Independent is confirming that Richardson has made a deal with Obama:

Richardson for Obama? So much for everyone reading him as kissing up to Hillary in the debates.

Sarge6: Well, Richardson was kissing up to her because he wanted a place in her administration. As it's become increasingly clear that she may not, in fact, wind up leading an administration...well, the lips are on the other ass.

Bill: It looks like the Independent has issued a semi-retraction. Still, it does look like both Biden and Richardson are tacitly tossing their non-viable supporters to Obama. If that's not a sign of momentum, I don't know what is.

Actually, Richardson team responded last night with a
denial:

Hi this is Joaquin with the Richardson Campaign and the rumor is false- there are no deals. These are typical last minute election shenanigans. Joaquin H. Guerra

A local Iowa paper quotes Biden's campaign manager saying there is no deal:

However, the Washington Post's anonymous sources in the campaigns say that discussions have indeed taken place:

What were the negotiations about? Biden clearly wanted something. VP slot? If so, Obama was wise to say no, he's strong enough on his own and a VP from a big Southern state would help him more than Biden, from Delaware.
