CNN/OPC California Poll: Tied GOP Race, Clinton Leads

14 Jan 2008 03:55 pm

Clinton: 47%
Obamal 41%
Edwards: 10%

And

John McCain: 20%
Mitt Romney: 16%
Rudy Giuliani: 14%
Huckabee: 13%

The margin of error for both samples is +/-6. I suppose it's significant that Romney and Giuliani are essentially tied.

This is great for Obama. Hillary once lead in CA by up to 20-25 points, so he's trimmed the lead to 6 points.

If he wins NV and SC, he may take CA.

Politico says is 47-C / 31-O

Which one is correct?

Sue - There's a typo in Marc's numbers. The official report has
HRC 47
BHO 31

So a 16 pt. lead. Gaining, but not closing.

Hello, Marc-

Very good news for McCain. In addition, California awards most of its delegates on a district-by-district basis. As a result, McCain is likely to do very well in blue districts and along the coast, particularly in the Navy-veteran heavy San Diego area...

This also spells trouble for Rudy, since one of the cornerstones of his Feb 5 strategy was to do extremely well in California. Granted, given the momentum swings that we've seen, and how far away this primary is... a lot can change... But good news for McCain. Not at all good for Rudy.

I do not understand the percentages that you quote for the Democratic primary.

I took this directly off of the CNN/Politico Website and they state:

"Sen. Hillary Clinton appears to be the front-runner, with 47 percent of likely Democratic primary voters backing the senator from New York. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois received the support of 31 percent of those polled."

This is a CNN/LATimes poll dated 1/14/07.

Does CNN run multiple or competing polls in the same state. I seriously doubt.

Marc,

Did you read Andrew's blog about a reader comments on lack of critical analysis on Clintons? Can you provide some critical insights? Perhaps, building on Hitch.
