McCain Stretches Romney's Words

27 Jan 2008 07:27 am

ORLANDO -- Neck and neck with Mitt Romney here, Sen. John McCain sought to the pull the inter-campaign conversation away from the economy and back into his wheelhouse Saturday, dredging up an April 2007 quote from Mitt Romney and misleadingly suggesting that Romney agreed with Democrats' plans to set a withdrawal timetable for Iraq.

"Gov. Romney wanted to set a date for withdrawal similar to what the democrats are seeking which would have led to the victory of Al-Qaeda in my view," McCain said, according to CBS News' Dante Higgins.

As proof, McCain's campaign directed reporters to an April 2007 interview with ABC News where
Romney said that the next "president and Prime Minister al-Maliki have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about."

That quote was derided by McCain at the time as a "secret timetable," although Romney never said he favored a particular withdrawal date and did not advocate an inflexible timeline for American troops to begin a draw down. Indeed, Romney has many times said he opposed such a withdrawal timetable.

McCain used the quote as part of a larger argument that he was the only Republican to fully support the surge of troops to Iraq commanded by Gen. David Petreaus. And it is clear that Romney has used softer language to characterize the likelihood of a pullout in his administration, once arguing that the Republican and Democratic presidents would likely not diverge in how they handled Iraq once they were in office.

Nonetheless, the words set off a fury of e-mail and telephone responses across the state, with campaign reporters for all the networks e-mailing each other the latest quotations from their candidates.

Romney said called McCain's charge "simply wrong" and "dishonest." A Romney spokesperson called McCain "unhinged;" A McCain spokesperson called the Romney spokesperson "Unhinged."

McCain later said it was Romney who should apologize, and "to the troops."

Kevin Madden, a Romney spokesman, then blasted this sentence to reporters: "This statement is especially egregious because Senator McCain knows in his heart that he is engaging in a blatant distortion towards a fellow Republican who is also committed to helping the men and women of our military achieve a successful result in Iraq."

Speaking later in Sun City, McCain repeated the charge that Romney favored a "timetable for withdrawal," words that Romney has never used.

Steve Schmidt, a senior McCain adviser, said that the context of the question was about withdrawal timetables. ". The question was about timetables and withdrawal. Romney answered it the way he answered it."

McCain later clarified the context: ""Last April, Governor Romney said he supported 'timetables' for withdrawing our troops from Iraq and keeping them secret. When he suggested secret 'timetables,' General Petraeus' new strategy in Iraq was just starting. Opponents of General Petraeus' strategy all argued that we should not increase troop levels, but establish 'timetables' for withdrawing our forces from Iraq. It was clear at the time that some were hedging their bets on Iraq, positioning themselves politically by being deliberately vague on their support for General Petraeus' new strategy. "

Rudy Giuliani, campaigning in Central Florida, used the occasion to distance himself from the internecine squabbles.

"We don't want to become like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, right? They're trying to work their way out of it, we shouldn't be trying to work our way into it."

AND NOW McCAIN BUYS ANOTHER FAVOR. Clearly Governor Crist must have found out that Mitt Romney was not going to let him use the placement of Florida's Primary and it's importance to get a VP job or other Washington-style favor for Crist. Don't buy this same old McCain Washington-style bribe/favor politics of having people owed, special interests to cater to and people in his pocket to address. You strike the right self-serving deal with McCain, Crist and you will get the political gain that you want? This is what Washington Politicians do when they can't stand on their record. McCain is a desperate and angry man who will stop at nothing to vindicate his losses rather that serve an ideology.

Straight-talk vs. Double-talk

McCain on youtube

Facts are stubborn things.

I'm disappointed in McCain. A couple weeks ago he was claiming he's a "straight talker" and that he will not "negatively" campaign. It shows he was only willing to do so at his political convenience. I know these comments don't sway people's votes, but I just had to voice my thoughts. I will not "hold my nose" and vote for McCain this fall. Both Huckabee and McCain have participated in "negative" campaigning while claiming to be the victim of negative campaigning. Huckabee's people attacking Romney's religion while trying to carry the mantle that he is the victim. They both look weak. I would also add Romney should not have called for an apology. He fell into McCain's Clintonesque political trap by letting him change the dialogue. Republicans have proved they are little different from democrats. They just want power.

What good is straight talk when it is wrong or dishonest? I am for the college valedictorian over the man who finished fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis.

I'l take a real war hero over a war prisoner any day. One day when McCain was being nasty to Joint Chjief Richad Myers I reflected on how one got shot down but the other flew 300 successful missions in Vietnam.

Furthermore, Republicans should take joy in their sucesses in influencing Bush policy on Myers, immigration and Dubai and avoid the self importance and egotism of McCain. Elect a representative who is responsive, not a dictator.

Let's hope enough of Florida Republicans don't fall for McCain's lies. He is one of the biggest hypocrites in Washington and we must not reward him by nominating him. It's crucial Florida be the one to stand up and slap him down before Feb. 5th. It'll send the message: we here in Florida are the first true, pure Republican primary and we are rejecting John McCain and his cadre of anti-Republican Democrat supporters, liberal legislative initiatives like amnesty, anti-free speech, and anti-tax measures, and most noteworthy his Paul Begala-like S-eating grin.

The only way to defeat McCain, who would lose to either Democrat in the general b/c no liberal Republican can outlib a Dem to Dems and Indies, is to vote for Romney in Florida. Rudy's out and so it's just Mitt and John.

McCain continues to show deceit and hypocrisy.

The Republican party does not need another Dick Nixon as its candidate.

I have some straight talk forJohn McComplain. Take your rich, child bride, and go home to Arizona and get a job so you can pay the well deserved alimony to the wife you discarded for your own pleasure.

McCain does the scroundrel act. Once again wrapping himself in a flag and effectively saying he is the Uber-Patriot" above any other American -because he "suffered" in his chosen family vocation of being professional military, vs. a family of professional doctors, scholars, fishermen, artists, etc.
Rudy milking 9/11 to explain why he was America's Greatest Mayor "standing tall!!" - got old after only a couple of years. McCain has been milking his POW entitlement for 4 decades as his vehicle to Navy promotions & sufferance until they got sick of him, then as means of political advancement, excusing his backstabs, and ducking consequence for scandals...I'm sicker of McCain The War Hero That Is Owed Everything than I am of Rudy's 9/11 schtick.

It shows he was only willing to do so at his political convenience. I know these comments don't sway people's votes, but I just had to voice my thoughts. I will not "hold my nose" and vote for McCain this fall.

I won't either. The stench is too strong.

Obama or Hillary are preferable, even to this conservative - than a stupid, angry old man. Who cannot be trusted to keep his word and wants to be President so he can be just like his fighter jock "my way or the highway" compadre Bush and keep Iraq and Amnesty the only things he cares about for the next four years. While he claims that even with 12 million illegals and their dependents then signing up for full welfare services and with his threat of invading Iran to protect his "Special Friend" Israel, he will do less spending than Bush...because he knows where to save a billion here and there in "earmarks".

McCain is too dumb anyways to know that all his endorsements come from media and RINOs that see him as Bob Dole II - but without Doles brains, trustworthiness, competence and deep respect - to be proffered up like a trussed turkey for the carving.

Better Republicans lose in 2008 than cast their lot with the treacherous McCain.

I think this could be the deathblow for...John McCain. I think he's self-destructing in Florida. Trying to sell his "straight talk" is just a used-carsalesman, see-through tactic that goes with his ghoulish grin and really probably only appeals to entry-level political voters, and hopefully not many of them would be attracted to a pissy old codger who hates his own Party enough to wrongly and hypocritically call Romney dishonest when Mitt ran TV ads full of McCain facts and figures, while permiting himself to outright lie about records, positions and to attack character--each things Romney never did.

Florida, you better snip this in the butt and vote for Romney on Tuesday because if McCain wins there, he'll get the nomination and that means that Hillary or Obama will win the election. McCain will lose at least half of the conservative base, who have proven that the Republican Party cannot just take their vote for granted by not voting, and so that means he'll have to attract more moderates, undecideds, independents and Democrats to not only win a natural majority of party voters plus swings, but enough swings to both compensate for his loss of Republcian voters (like me) plus more to eclipse the Democrat.

Romney or Rudy each shore up the Republicans, and each has proven they too appeal to moderates after having gotten elected in NYC and Massachusetts. Sadly Rudy has blundered his campaign and is no longer a player, so that leaves Romney as the only viable candidate left to give the Republicans a chance in 2008.

Most of these same posters deriding McCain for his comments are probably the same ones who welcome Mitt Romney with open arms, who is one of the greatest double-talk/panderers I have ever seen. It is very true what someone said in this thread; hypocrisy truly knows no bounds with some, and they're proven that with their statements right on this page.

I'M BEGGING AMERICA, Please don't vote for McCain! Can't you see that he's the Democrats #1 tool for success.

McCain graduated 5th from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy. That should say enough about him. His a total fake. He still doesn't know how to speak.

Romney has the highest IQ, the most republican support, the business AND political experience to turn things around. Come on, he didn't even take a salary as Governor of Mass. The man has turned everything he touches into Gold.

Vote Smart, Vote Mitt!

I think McCain just lost the Primary in Florida and he knows it. He's trying to cook up something to try and stop Romney's surge ahead. He wants to portray Mitt as a Flip-flopper while he himself is a Democrat in Republican clothing. His reaching across the Isle to the other party has often been against Republican conservatism. I hope he exposes his true character before the Primary. Anyone who has done their homework will know that Romney Brings a much wider array of skills to the table and a much better track record of self discipline than McCain.
Romney is much better qualified for the job as President than any other candidate in both the Republican and Democratic fields and I think people will gradually come to that conclusion as the Presidential race continues.

What has happened to this country due to mud slinging politics, is that it has filtered down into the voting public and we see the same name calling when people respond to articles. The post above is an example. Barack's campaign so far seems to limit that sort of thing but the others are more than ready to grab hold of a non-issue and get nasty. I think McCain is making a mistake attacking Romney about Iraq. It is true that McCain was the only voice of increasing boots on ground for a very long time. Perhaps knowing so many more died because of that call being ignored has made him extremely touchy on that subject. If more boots on the ground had been put in place perhaps at this point we would be withdrawing like so many want. Romney is a very bright man and perhaps was following the sentiment to come up with a timetable when all looked very lost in Iraq. On the subject of those coming in at the bottom of their class vs the top it is something to think about. I am always reminded of the fact that John Kennedy Jr failed his bar exam 3 times I believe and yet I am sure if he had lived and chosen to go into politics his GPA would not have been an issue. I have known lots of bright people that couldn't lead their way out of a paper bag and then again some people with lousy grades went on to be extremely successful as leaders. The qualities for a leader are complex that is for sure.

McCain is showing his true self. He is even willing to lie to win. It is clear he is threatened by Mitt Romney...as he very well should be. Please everyone, VOTE MITT ROMNEY!!! Gov. Romney would lead this country in the right direction.

There's a reason why McCain is lying and it's apparant now, this is just another example of a great comparison of who should be President and who should go home. McCain is an example of what's wrong with Washington, Romney is an example of what should be right. Get Romney there so we the people can hold the senate and house of representatives accountable for getting things done. I'll capitalize those titles when the respect and responsibility come back to the house.

The media: Gov. Romney is a flip-flopper who governed as a liberal republican in MA.

The truth: Gov. Romney won in one of the most the most liberal states in the nation, running as a conservative and promising to turn the budget and economy in MA around.

Perspective is an amazing thing. Consider, that Romney, not McCain is the one who has one liberal, moderate and independent votes against a woman and a liberal. McCain has only one elections in the relatively red state of AZ.

Consider that Romney is much less well known nationally then McCain, and that is why the meaningless polls show McCain stronger than Romney against Clinton. Romney would eat Clinton alive compared with McCain.

In my view, Romney is a much more capable debater than the whold field on either side. He also has tremendous honesty, integrity. If there were a single ethical breach in Romney's career don't you think his opponents and the press would have discovered it and used it by now.

Don't listen to the power of the demogogues and spin masters in the media. Don't listen to candidates like McCain who show their true character under pressure, (e.g. mean and vidictive.) I never do trust people who tell me they are honest. Sen. McCain, why don't you just tell us the truth, instead of self-proclaiming your honest in meaningless soundbites?

Why do you claim to be a positive campaigner, but then sling ungrounded and untruthful mud? Go back to the Senate.

McCain not only lied about Romney's stance and former statements but he was HYPOCRITICAL while doing so.

As quoted from the online service of the Arizona star, written in Jan 2007, McCain then appears to have been talking about possibly needing timetables for withdrawal, with possible severe consequences if not met.

http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/byauthor/166271

“Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., one of the most stalwart supporters of the war in Iraq, said Thursday that he might propose that the Iraqi government meet certain benchmarks for the United States to continue its engagement.

Fellow senators and independent political scientists said McCain’s thinking reflected growing concerns within the Republican Party about the course of the war, and also might mark a turning point for the likely 2008 presidential contender, whose previous unconditional backing of the war may have hurt his prospects.

McCain said Thursday that he hadn’t yet decided on precise benchmarks. “They’d have to be specific, and they (Iraqi government officials) would have to meet them,” he said.

Asked what penalty would be imposed if Iraq failed to meet his benchmarks, he said: “I think everybody knows the consequences. Haven’t met the benchmarks? Obviously, then, we’re not able to complete the mission. Then you have to examine your options.”

Andrew E. Smith, a political science professor and the director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, said: “I think it certainly could be politically significant.” New Hampshire will hold the first presidential primary of 2008.
“This seems to me like he’s trimming his sails a little on the issue,” Smith said…

It was unclear what consequences or timetables McCain would spell out, or whether he believes that Congress has the authority to enforce them.

Still, several Senate Demo-crats who oppose the troop buildup and also may seek the presidency said they were struck by McCain’s comments.
“We Catholics call that an epiphany,” said Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Joseph Biden, D-Del., who is sponsoring the main Democratic resolution opposing the troop buildup.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said: “I called for that . . . several weeks ago. I’m glad that John McCain agrees with me."

This has made up my mind. I respected McCain for his views on Iraq, but I have also studied the other candidates and new that Romney and McCain were identical on Iraq.

This dishonesty by McCain has lead me to reject him. And Romney's statement that "you can't have a First-rate Military with a second rate economy" rings very true. Now matter how I cut it, Mitt is now #1. Romney really out paces McCain on economic issues.

Please vote for Governor Huckabee!

catholic.org put out a great article that is front page called "let Huckabee speak" Please go read that article.

It is rare for the Catholic church to like a candidate that is not Catholic. We all like Mike Huckabee.

Dan Campbell
Sgt., USMC

They say the easiest way to know if McCain is lying is to look and see if his lips are moving. This salty old dog reminds me of my angry grandfather. Florida isn't stupid, who's he trying to fool?

Dan: "Its rare for the Catholic church to like a candidate that is not Catholic. We all like Mike Huckabee".

Will you please now say you, Evangelicals, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, and people of other faiths should support a Mormon who mirrors their political views? Or is religious bigotry only O.K. for Evangelicals who support Huckabee?

McCain--Shouldn't Tell A Lie!
With the New York Times questioning the truthfulness of McCain's statement yesterday and the media finding that McCain took a similar position, it looks like McCain has been caught in his own trap. Voters don't do well with dishonesty. The "Straight Talk Express" has just run out of gas!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu-tg1kQ8dk&eurl=http://race 42008.com/

With Obama winning last night by a big margin it would appear that the Democrats will be electing a youthful candidate who is a proponent of change. Obama is articulate. Contrast this with McCain. McCain will probably fall asleep during the future debates and will not remember what his name is! The only hope for the Republicans is Romney!

If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck then it is probably a duck. The recent picture on the Drudge report of a smiling Hillary looking admiringly up at a cheerful McCain with the caption below quoting Bill......McCain and Hillary are "very close", makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. What in the name of the Reagan Coalition is going on here? Why the warm and fuzzy feeling between Hillary and McCain, and could it exist without a general consensus on the issues of the day between the two? I think not! It is time for McCain to unzip his sheeps clothing and reveal the candidate that he really is. Think America!!!! Who did John Kerry first consider as his Vice Presidential running mate? A Republican??? Believe it or not. No one other than our own John McCain. Why would he consider McCain if it were not for the fact that he knew where he stood on the issues and must have said "I can live with that". And supposedly made him the offer. Kerry? Hillary? McCaine? It boggles the mind. Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave.

Dan Campbell,

Huckabee is dead in the holy water at this point. He doesn't have the financing to go the distance, effectively proving his message doesn't resonate with either voters or donors. He doesn't have broad appeal with his everlasting evangelical chauvinism. He so over-the-top that he even makes his own evangelical people cringe. I'm waiting to see him walking from campaign stop to campain stop carrying a big wooden cross singing "swing low, sweet chariot". "He a good guy" they say, but you know what they also say," good guys always finish last"

McCain is a double talker, a democrat in republican clothing. He wouldn'y last five minutes against the dems if he disasterously were to get the republican nomination. There is no serious rival for Mitt Romney. In Americ's hour of need, God has provided Mitt Romney. If the electorate is fooled by McCains drivel, then America will be doomed to years of misery. Come on America look at Romney's track record look at America's needs Cometh the hour cometh the man - vote MITT ROMNEY.......

I too have studied the candidates and their positions. To begin with, I was a strong McCain supporter because of the war; however, then I started looking at other factors: Does his capture make him more of a patriot than others? Do his grades at such a challenging school as the Naval Academy signify a reticence to research and clear thinking? Was his abandonment of the mother of his children who stood by him through so much expose a tendency to selfishness? How come so many accounts refer to his wealthy, trophy wife adopting children, but not to "their" adopting children? How can this man be concerned about my family's well-being, when it has become increasingly clear that his own are not a top priority? I doubt Sen. McCain worries about what I pay for a gallon of milk, a tank of gas, or my interest rate.
Romney on the other hand has proven he can get the most bang for his buck and can turn dire economic situations around. Isn't it time to have a smart individual with both an economic and a government background in the most important economic/government job in the world? I hear so much about Romney being called a panderer, but I think that's wrong. There's a difference in listening to others and gathering information and THEN making a decision as opposed to blindly clinging to outdated solutions. The Transdendentalist thinkers knew the wisdom of looking at all the facts; so does this New Englander!
Meanwhile on the Dem side, I'm proud to know Hillary can announce to the world this morning that Bill loves her. I'm reminded of two things: Sally Field's famous acceptance of her Oscar, and the Biblical idea of forgiving someone 70 x 7 times. Clearly, Hillary is a spiritual person...who would have guessed? As for Obama, has he ever authored or co-authored a bill that was passed? The man is loaded with charisma, but to borrow from the Fritz campaign: "Where's the beef?"
My vote goes to Romney!

Boy oh boy Johnny boy!
You sure have hammered the last nail in your coffin huh?
Look, in real world of business and politics, great leaders do not know everything, they put together a strong cabinet who collectively do know most everything and know how to implement it! They efficiently manage that group of advisors and implementors. What this country really needs is a strong leader and manager willing to listen and learn, not a power tripping dictator. That whole schtick works in the military, not the govt!

Micromanagers are the WORST kind of managers! Mitt knows how to manage and get results! Johnny is a kook and would drive this country into a downward spiral to end all spirals! What's more, he stands no chance of being elected over the other libs.

People throw away votes on goofs like Johnny cause they are too proud to admit there is a more efficient way to do things. It's people like that who get people like the Clintons elected. It's the lawyers and politicians who are killing this magnificent country. It's time for change! It's time for a great manager to run this country!

What this country needs right now is a great leader! A proven leader! Not another kook!

Rob, you scare me.

Dan, are you still on? Can you endorse a Mormon who meets your other political tests?

I propose we choose based on the candidates' stated policies and records and not divide the party based on religion.

Why doesn't Huckabee just call McCain and ask him to announce that he'll be the VP candidate if McCain by some disaster gets the Republican nomination? He's comparable to poor John Edwards, who just wants to be VP for whoever gets the Dem. nomination.
Today, Mr Holier Than Thou Huckabee, the one annointed by the Media to speak on all religious and moral matters, has announced that McCain is not "blatantly" dishonest. Did you notice the shifty eyes as he said so? Anyway, this is the second time he has rushed to defend McCain from a non-attack by Romney, in an effort to create and prolong a rift between McCain and Romney.
This re-self-invented Huckabee can talk the most and say the least of any man in the race.

John McCain is a hypocrite. He's devise, rude and the most undiplolatic politician I know. I've heard several people that have connections to DC indicate that behind closed doors he's a jerk to people.

Florida, don't fall his guy, he will leave this country more divided than ever.

It is pretty obvious how bad Mccain want s the nomination, he would probably do most anything for it. Every time he goes back to Iraq. When mis-represented Romney on the withdrawal time line, he sensationalizes by saying Romney owes and apology to the troops. Pathetic.
When Mccain was asked in the Florida debate about not being real strong on economics and said he didn't know where that came from, it was out of his own mouth.

Dear Mr McCain,

We are grateful to you for the sacrifices you made for this country during the Vietnam conflict, as well as the sacrifices of all the other Veterans of Foreign Wars. However, I feel that your emphasis on your POW experience making you the best candidate to run this country is not only fundamentally flawed, but also undermines the sacrifices of all the other veterans of the United States of America.

Why does the fact that you were a POW make you a better patriot than the other men and women who have served and now serve this country? How does that experience make you the leader this country needs at this time? When I turn on the news, I hear about the economy going down the tube, the stock market plunging, and the gas prices soaring, and very little about the War in Iraq. How does being a POW help those problems?

Perhaps it is time for a new campaign strategy: deemphasize your military career and emphasize what you are going to do for us - the-run-of-the-mill, average, everyday American. After all, flaunting his Purple Hearts got John Kerry nowhere. Take that lesson to heart from him, and this lesson from Mitt Romney: turn the focus to America as a whole rather than focusing on you getting into that antique leather chair in the Oval Office.

Willard AKA Mitt’s statement about the timetable is doublespeak. We need a timetable but keep is secret. That way he can say he supported a timetable and didn’t. Who in their right mind would think it’s possible to have that secret? Even considering a timetable is a losing war strategy that will lead to surrender.

This is just another Mittism like his answer in the debate about catastrophic insurance. He said he supported a national program but not is someone in Iowa pays for a loss in FL. Is he serious? This is another one where he flips mid-sentence so he supports it and doesn’t at the same time.

Americans are tired of this dishonesty. This is not a conservative or republican value. Mitt is loose with the truth, wants to be on every side of every issue, and says whatever he needs to get elected. This is his track record all the way back to 1994. If he is the nominee he will be torn to shreds with his own words and record.

Oh, and for those swayed by fake testimonials… I used to support Mitt, I really like his hair, he looks so Presidential, and he says things that make me feel good, maybe he will tell us all how to make money like he did. But this last reminder (Timetable) that he wants to surrender really has me switching to McCain. He is the only one who can lead us from day one as Commander is Chief.

Go Johnny Go…

More double speak by McCain. War hero you maybe, but honest person you are not.

http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/byauthor/166271

Hey John McCain! Objects in your mirror are closer than they appear!!!! Mitt Romney is surging and has taken the lead in the RCP average! McCain's going down and he knows it!

Mitt Romney has the expertise to represent America's economic interests in the world and ensure that trade agreements protect US business. He understands the workings of the US economy and what it takes for businesses to succeed to ensure America's ability to be competitive in the global economy vis a vis rising economies like India and China. He was also Governor of a Commonwealth and turned around the disastrous management of the Winter Games into a success.

John McCain resume is a military veteran who got divorced and married a beautiful woman who has been very kind to him. It is reported that she financed his political career and he became Senator. He tried to win the nomination of the Republican party but he was defeated by G W Bush.

At one point last year McCain's campaign looked like it was grinding to an end but then he decided the best way to get back into the race was to latch onto the coat tails of General David Petraeus's success in Iraq. This is disingenious as McCain is the type of person that would be likely to back a war whenever one was remotely possible. It would be interesting to know whether he wants to go to war with Iran or any other countries if he became President. In Iraq, the dice rolled in his favour with the outcome of the Surge due to the brilliance of General Petraeus but will it always do so?

The Generals that warned before 2003 that not enough troops would be in Iraq to stabilise the country after the invasion have quietly been forgotten.

The old adage is that the success of a war is dependent on the strength of a country which in turn is dependent of the strength of its economy.

If the economy goes down so will everything else.

2008 is the year You Decide.

LET'S PUMP IT UP!!! Mitt Romney's coming to take the nomination away from John McCain and rightfully so! What happened to "people don't like negative campaigning"??? McCain faces defeat and resorts to negative attacks on Mitt! Mitt Romney will turn this country around just like he's turned around everything else he's ever gotten his hands on! Let's go Florida! GO MITT!

Peter,
There are timetables and benchmarks in place right now! They are not for public consumption. Is McCain REALLY suggesting that we shouldn't have any such goals or metrics in place? What is he criticizing. As he backs away from his LIE that Mitt called for a secret timetable for withdrawal (and Huckabee joins him in bearing a false witness) McCain looks like a fool as he criticizes Romney for having a plan of accountability when it comes to American lives. McCain is an unstable human being that shouldn't be allowed within 40 feet of the nuclear suitcase. He is losing Florida and he is losing his marbles. I have known Mitt his entire life and never once have I known him to be dishonest. His position on Abortion has changed and that is it and I can assure you it won't be changing back. It is clear that anti-mormon bigots are holding fast to the flip flopping charge initiated by the DNC as a cover for their anti-mormon leanings. If the Republicans nominate McCain he will suffer the same fate as Ford and Dole and we will all be wondering why we didn't nominate the most intelligent, most successful, most energetic conservative truly capable of taking Washington apart and rebuilding it piece by piece until it starts working for America - Mitt Romney.

Matinee Mitt thinks that sense he looks the part of what Hollywood presents to be an American president, that this makes him presidental timber.
He certainly is not. A former one term liberal Massachusetts governor who once vied for Ted Kennedy's senate seat by campaigning as "Kennedy Lite". Now, the flip-flopper wants us all tho think he's John Wayne!
It just doesn't wash Mitt and use your real first name: Willard. John Wayne. No! Rock Hudson? Prerhaps.

I think McCain is against the ropes, and this is a last ditch effort on his part to stop the Romney surge!

First, McCain also supported time tables. Second, what is wrong with setting goals and working toward them? Finally, Romney is far superior in terms of leadership, management, communication skills, etc. Romney also has the issues covered in the defense, economic and value areas, and not just one. I don't know if Romney will win, but I hope he does (for our country's sake).

An interesting observation:

The date of McCain's talk about "benchmarks" was made in Jan. 2007. Romney's talk about "timetables" came in April 2007. Benchmarks and timetables can be regarded as similes in these references. Since McCain is regarded as an influential political figure, is it any wonder that Romney comes out with a similar statement, if not to bolster his own political agenda by supporting McCain or for some other reason?

Now McCain has attempted to stab Romney in the back while in reality he has shot himself in the foot, because all this talk about benchmarks and timetables started with McCain. Well did "Andrew E. Smith, a political science professor and the director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center," say: "I think it certainly could be politically significant."" Yes, it may have just cost McCain the nomination.

I encourage all of us that support Mitt Romney, to do the Mitt Romney call at home program, today and Monday.... go to www.MittRomney/callathome.com

As someone who comes from McCain's home state, I can tell you... The only thing we want McCain doing is working on his golf game.

Lets let Florida know how important it is to support Mitt !

GO MITT !!

Chandler, AZ

JOHN McCAIN = PEACE WITH HONOR!

Willard "Mitt" Romney; Hillary Rodham Clinton; Barack Hussein Obama = PEACE THROUGH SURRENDER!

AMERICA'S CHOICE COULD NOT BE MORE CLEAR OR MORE DANDEROUS

JOHN McCAIN*****PRESIDENT 2008*****

BECAUSE LEADERSHIP DOESN'T FIT ON A RESUME!

Some Great Posts on here. McCain is being pushed up and endorsed by some of the most liberal newspapers in the country. Why? Because they know that which ever democrat is nominated, they will destroy McCain. Hillary and Obama both want McCain to be the nominee because they will all be Washington "insiders" that takes out that argument.

Romney as the Nominee, can hold which ever Senator accountable for what they haven't done in Washington. Even with a Majority in Congress the democrats have not done anything. We NEED CHANGE in WASHINGTON. Romney can be that Change. He has turned around a crappy Mass. economy, and turned around a doomed Olympics. Please Florida, McCain for who he truly is. A democrat in republican clothes. He is taking words out of context to harm Romney. Romney never said that he wanted to set a time-table for troop withdrawl. He said that the Iraqi PM and US President set time-tables for goals. Like any business to be successful, you set and work towards goals.

We need a Romney to go to washington and clean it up. By electing those already there, it won't happen. Romney is has great morals. He didn't trade in his wife for a younger richer version.

Florida and the Nation listen to Romney and see how you feel.

Vote for Mitt Romney

Again , please support Gov. Romney as we try to put a ethical, compent person in the White House.

Do the call at home program for Florida, Sunday and Monday...

www.mittromney/callathome

Contrary to the spin, Romney is an honorable man, who clearly understands that a timeline for withdrawal is essentially a timeline for surrender. McCain, if not outright lieing, is at the least, taking liberties with the truth to assert that Romney proposed a timeline for withdrawal. His actual words were clear and should be supported by all reasonable people. That is- Set goals and benchmarks to be achieved, set deadlines to achieve them, and monitor the progress. That is what leaders do. That in fact, highlights the difference between the two men. McCain’s highest claim to leadership is participation in the Senate- essentially a debating society! This he shares with the three Democrats. All have no executive experience. Romney has had executive leadership responsibility as a State Governor, as well as the Olympics and business. With specific regard to understanding the economy, Mitt clearly “gets it”. McCain demonstrated his ignorance of the real drivers of the economy while campaigning in Michigan. He somehow thinks the automakers just need more government regulation to be profitable! Another view he shares with the Democrats. Here, he also claimed we just have to accept the decline and, apparently, eventual death of the “Detroit Three” automakers. In contrast, Romney expressed optimism for a rebirth of competitiveness, which is the only path to success. That is vision and leadership, for which Romney was called a liar. McCain would better be described as a sideline chatterer. Maybe that is what the Senate best prepares one for.

I am just one GOP voter but I would like to ask anyone from Florida who may be reading this a question?

HOw much does the thought of Hillary as president scare you?

It scares me a lot but not enough to vote for John Mccain in November.

I, along with many other Republicans I know, WILL NEVER VOTE FOR JOHN MCCAIN EVEN IF IT'S HIM AGAINST HILLARY!

Please don't simiss this post. When you step into the voting booth this Tuesday think about what I have said and what you already know about Mccain and the GOP base.

Do this nation a favor....vote for Romney!

As a Vietnam Veteran and businessman in Florida I was totally opposed to McCain's Amnesty program and was voting for Fred Thompson. Now this stupid attack and if you read the quote, totally untrue dirty ad just before Tuesday vote has sealed the six votes in my extended family here to vote for Mitt. As a veteran I am disgusted with McCain.

You know, Romney, Willard you have a lot of money and you can afford to pay a lot of your flunkies to post on internet blogs and on You-Tube. But at the end of the day John McCain will wipe the floor with you because he has the hearts and minds of the American people with him. And he has Our Troops with him.
Willard Romney, you are nothing but a political opportunist and a flip flopper extraordinaire so much so you make the Clintons blush. But each and every day more and more people are waking up to this fact. I think Lincoln said it best: "you can fool some of the people some of the time........ ".

To imply that Benchmarks is a date for withdrawl is a dumb move on McCain's part. Benchmarks that are only known to the military and Iraqi leaders already exist. Of course there has to be milestones that have to be met in order to have a responsible withdrawl from that country. For McCain to imply that Romney wants to just pull out is misleading and dishonest. But then, McCain has shown when he's not riding an easy train, he will stoop to these tricks.

Romney has been challenged again and again and he campaigns steady and when he's changed his mind, he explains why. McCain just denies that he's ever changed his mind. "I don't know much about the economy, I know everything about the economy" How is that not a flip? But apparently, ONly Romney is hung for changing his mind but McCain is a "straight talker"? Lets drop the double standard, one standard will do just fine here.

Some people think because Willard Romney made money (though he was born rich, heir to the AMC fortune) this makes him qualified to be president.
Well, Bill Gates made a heck of a lot more than Romney. Do you want to nominate Bill Gates?
Romney ran the 2002 winter olympics. WOW! That not much more than running a county fair.
Or that he was a governor of a small state for 4 years. Bill Clinton was governor of a small state for 11 years. Was he all that qualified? More qualified than George H. Bush (41) So qualified that Clinton allowed Osama Bin Laden to escape capture. And you know the rest of the story!

The Olympics is compared to a country fair?!!

rofl!!

A state fair then, smart guy!

But lets not forget that during the Vietnam war when John McCain was running the largest Naval air squadron of the war.
WHERE WAS WILLARD??????????
Why he got a deferment and went to live in of all places F R A N C E.

Poly vu France?

So could McCain's time on the Senate Commerce Committee be compared to serving on the PTA?

The fact of the matter is that Romney knows the economy better than McCain. McCain is trying to manipulate the main topic focus back to Iraq when the economy is more on everyone's minds. I say again: give the War a rest and focus on what concerns the people; unless of course the people's opinion doesn't matter...

PS: I'm not paid by Romney. I'm a free-thinking American expressing my opinion of my own free will and choice.

McCain is playing dirty. He is the establishment. Hot head taking cheap shots is not presidential. Bill Clinton just himself is saying that Hillary and McCain are very good friends and if they both won the nominations, it would be very civil and the country would be bored. Check out on youtube.com

That statement really is a true reflection of what a threat McCain is to Billary. I think not. Both Republicans and democrats are sick of dirty playing politicians hungry for power.

I am a Republican who is having a tough time standing by guy who goes against almost every major issue I stand for. Shame on McCain!

I don't see that as being a problem. Alot of people didn't want to go to vietnam. Bush didn't go if I remember right. Many people aren't signing up now to go fight in Iraq. Do we condemn them? No. We support those who voluntarily go and put their lives at risk for us. However, Being a war veteran is no entitlement to the Presidency.

What I think gets overlooked in the achievement that was the Winter Olympics is what it took to pull off those games with such a profit margin. During a time when everyone was terrified about safety from terrorists. MItt had to work with all the participating governments, national security and also the business interests of the games and he did such a great job that not one participating government backed out. Who knows what benefit that will have as he deals with international issues, will various governments feel more friendly towards us because of their past aquaintence with MItt and the games?

The EU is becomeing a major player. Will Mitt familiarity with France be an asset in dealing with that prickly governing body since France is such a major player within that body?

Mitt has also shown that when getting the job done, he doesn't care what political party you are. He just wants to get the job done and gets everyone involved. That would be a huge benefit in dealing with Congress who is so divided that if the Dems want to use Kleenex to blow their nose, the Republicans will insist that only Puffs should be used. (chuckles)

Refreshing. Finally some people that see the obvious. McCain is not a factual nor a good candidate. He is double teaming with Huckabee to try to bring down Romney, but with little success.
Hey look I am an unpaid and strong supporter of Romney. Despite the claims here that the people are just paid. I live in Michigan and I know how McCain lost. He told me I needed to get retrained despite having 5 years worth of college training as an engineer. He voted for 35 miles per gallon average without providing the means to allow the automobile manufacturers to meet those requirements through R&D. He told them that the problems were their own faults despite the governments pressures to have them provide health care when they felt they could not afford it.
McCain is not good for America. His "Straight Talk" is just a crooked mock of the truth. He is not very conservative either. Don't vote for this guy I beg. You really need to get to know him better and what he represents to understand why he is dangerous.

To Mitt Romney supporters, how will he answer the charge that he is another John Kerry flip-flopper from Massachusetts?

I am a concerned Republican who is worried that Mitt would get trounced by Barack Obama in the general election.

If you look at voter turn out and money donated to the campaigns, clearly there is more momentum by the democrats to vote and get out there.

It may be a given that we get a democrat president no matter who is the Rupublican nominee if the voter turn out stays constant.

John McCain thinks you all are stupid.

He says straight talk so you need not concern yourself when he gets caught bold faced lying.

He says it is not amnesty so you need just shut up.

FACT: Willard Romney has more flip-flops going on than they have over at SEA WORLD.

When asked by the press what he would do if another terrorist attack occured on American soil, Romney replied "first I would sit down with my lawyers".

OH REALLY! Maybe you can invite F. Lee Baily and Gloria Allred over for tea aa well, Mitt.

When asked by the press what he would do if another terrorist attack occured on American soil, Romney replied "first I would sit down with my lawyers".

OH REALLY! Maybe you can invite over F. Lee Baily and Gloria Allred for tea as well, Mitt.

John McCain does not know enough about the economy to be President. He has been in line with Bush and we are over 9 trillion dollars in debt. Romney, like McCain, believes the pre-emptive strike policy against Iraq was a good idea. Clearly, he and McCain are willing to sacrifice American lives for nothing.

McCain's ability to "cross the ailse" is not a strength when you give up the values of the Constitution. It's one thing to negotiate and it's quite another to violate principles you are obligated to uphold.

Fine. Name every single issue that Willard Mitt Romney has flip-flopped on (See, I can use his first name too).

What candidate (or politician for that matter) HASN'T flip-flopped on an issue?

McCain has been caught red-handed flip-flopping on the issue of benchmarks in Iraq. He also flip-flopped on his wife and children by marrying a young, rich, trophy wife to finance his campaign. Will he leave her too once he is done with her?

I prefer the one candidate who still honors, supports, and cherishes his first wife: Mitt Romney.

He who values his own family values America.

I would disagree with you Thomas. His big changes have explanations attached to them. He hasn't gone back to his original stance so he hasn't flopped yet.

And I don't see where his political moves are any different then McCain, Huckabee, Clinton or Obama.

I will say that I like Romney because I do believe his work record shows he's a calm, detailed person who is conservative on family and life values. He can work with anyone and can get the job done. The fact that he's not a raving conservative lunatic is very reassuring to me.

And maybe that is what pisses off those looking for a fantatical conservative nominee?

For all of those who try to say that Huckabee/Clinton had more executive experience as governer of Arkansas compared to Mitt Romney's experience as governer of Massachussets. Check out the facts from Wikipedia.org:

Arkansas:
-----------
Population Ranked 32nd in the US
- Total 2,673,400

The state's gross domestic product for 2005 was $87 billion. Its per capita household median income (in current dollars) for 2006 was $35,295

Massachusettes:
--------------
Population Ranked 13th in the US
- Total 6,349,097

The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that Massachusetts's gross state product in 2004 was US $318 billion. Per capita personal income in 2004 was US$42,102, making it the 2nd highest, just behind that of Connecticut

----------------

The population of Massachussets is over twice as much as Arkansas.

The gross state production of Massachussets is %3.6 times more than Arkansas.

These are the facts, DONT EVER, AGAIN, SAY THAT MIKE HUCKABEE HAD MORE EXECUTIVE EXERIENCE THAN MITT ROMNEY AS GOVERNER.

Now what has John McCain run? Uh...NOTHING!

Don't be stupid, VOTE FOR MITT ROMNEY, the ONLY smart one in the room.

Willard's (Mitt) Flip- Flops: He was for it before he was against it!______

Abortion and Roe: in 1994 for it. TODAY: against it.

Gun control: banned 17 types of guns in Mass. Praised by Sarah Brady and HCI. TODAY: he's a big time varmit hunter.

Gay marriage: he and his Lt. gov. marched in Gay Pride. Allowed gays to marry in Massachusetts. TODAY: he's acting like Anita Bryant.

Taxes: never cut taxes in the highest tax state. Passed and raised user fees and surcharges. TODAY: he's a Supply Sider.

Health care: signed a personal mandate Hillary style health care law. Its now bankrupting the state. TODAY: he changes the subject.

Iraq: its time to withdraw. TODAY: He's just like John Wayne and he "never" said "retreat".

Reagan/Bush 1980-84: Romney despised them and said so in a debate with Teddy boy. TODAY: why he thinks they are the cats meow.

"IF YOU STAND FOR NOTHING YOU WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING"
Winston Churchill

Hear that, Romney supporters?

He changed on abortion when he was confronted with a bill that would have legalized cloning human embryos for experimentation. Yeah, what a terrible reason to change that position.

ON the gay marriage issue, he actually fought against the courts on that one in his state while in office. He doesn't seem to have a problem with civil unions, which is true for most of the country.

Personally, I think he was badly advised to try and court the NRA as "any good republican" should. I don't have a problem with the second amendment. I have a problem with the criminals being more well stocked with guns then our own police. And somehow, I don't see the need to have an automatic weapon to shoot deer. Call me weird.

The Budget and Health Care issues in his state were the best that him and the Dem. congress could come up with at the time to tackle the issues presented to them. They took a Budget in deficit and balanced it. Then they tried thier best to help the people in their state. Romney has always said that you cannot take the Mass. plan for Health care and make it the National plan because each state has different needs and needs to find a balance that works best for them. His National Health Care proposal supports the states in doing that. That the mass plan needs to be retooled a little to help balance things out is part of the process when you impliment a new way of doing things. Somethings are going to work, some are not. I like that they sat down, did their best to cross party lines and get the job done.

Excuses, Excuses! If weakling, pretty boy Romney could not stand up to Massachusetts state Democrats, Just imagine how Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will have their way with him.

You see what you want to see Thomas.

The Crist endorsement is not going to help Mccain. Why would the endorsement of a closeted RINO governor would help McCain? Both are RINO. McCain needs to come out of the political closet and the other one has to come out of the real closet. May be this endorsement will help McCain to spread his gay agenda.

We need a real Christian like Huckabee in the white house.

Why do you Romulans even bother with Romney? If you want a liberal to support you have Hillary and Obama to choose from.
Meanwhile, us real American will all be voting for John McCain. A war hero and true leader.

Romney isn't even a RINO. He's a Ted Kennedy LIBERAL1 Who's kidding who?

Oh, and how about Romney's Bain Capital selling 3Com the maker of computer firewall software for the Pentagon, selling the company to Red China! You can check this out on MichaelSavage.com

Thomas; you can just keep hanging on to McCain's loosing streak and support his dishonesy all you want. It's obvious you are the losing minority!!! I used to support McCain but it has become very clear that he's not the top choice for all the reasons stated on this post by others.

I'm supporting Romney! McCain thinks he can spin the truth.........who's he kidding?!?!?!

When Mitt Romney spoke recently to a group of Jewish leaders in Florida we can be sure he did not mention that he supported the bizarre practice of the Mormon organisation of baptizing dead Jewish holocaust victims . If the Republican party was so foolish as to nominate Mitt Romney as their Presidential candidate it is a near certainty that the Democrats would bring to light the host of problems which are attached to Romney .
