McCain Is -- Finally -- In The Money

24 Jan 2008 12:47 pm

As first reported by Time, Sen. John McCain has raised more than $7M since the beginning of the month -- most of it over the past two weeks. Nearly $3M has been raised online.

A major McCain fundraiser told me yesterday that a victory in Florida could bring in $5M from the well-heeled donor establishment, a group McCain has still been unable to render harmless or favorable.

After Florida, assuming Romney and McCain finish one/two or two/one, will the money flow to the self-funder -- Romney? or to the guy who needs it but doesn't like to raise it -- McCain?

Now he can pay off the $3 million loan he took out in December, and still have enough money left over to run ads in half a dozen Super Tuesday states - o r maybe fewer if maintaining his organization is costing him a lot of money.
If he can keep up that pace, he's in OK shape. But it's too little too late to make a big impact on Super Tuesday, except to the extent that it makes him look like a credible candidate.

McCain is up in the polls in all BIG states on Super Tuesday--especially, New York, Conn., and NJ. Considering Guiliani will most likely lose Florida and drop out of the race, I think McCain is looking solid. Logisically speaking, it doesn't look good for Romney.

I'm not so sure Giuliani will drop out before Super Tuesday. He probably already has ad buys out and so on, and has recently been strategically backing away from the claim that Florida was make or break for him. But if he *did* drop out, do we know that his voters would go to McCain rather than Romney? If we assume they're mostly Iraq hawks, it seems likely - but it could be much more complicated than that; voters who are looking primarily for executive competence might go from Rudy to Mitt instead...

McCain appears to do well with the liberal states, but there is still the middle of the country where he is not so well liked. Even Arizonans were frustrated with McCain's Amnesty plan. His support for the continual Iraq war will be called into question once the elections are over and people find out that the Iraq's still don't like us.
My bet is on Romney with his superior organization. Romney's support doesn't bounce up and down based on who the media is supporting this week. "Its the economy stupid". We need someone who understands the economy to get this country moving in the right direction again.
