Obama Campaign Asks For Inquiry In Nevada

23 Jan 2008 03:47 pm

They're not contesting the results, but Barack Obama's presidential campaign wants Nevada Democrats to investigate whether Hillary Clinton's precinct captains broke caucus rules.

Robert Bauer, Obama's general counsel, writes in a letter to NV Dem chair Jill Derby to "conclusively and clearly" address what he terms a "disturbing pattern of incidents" that took place last Saturday.

Read the full letter here.

Specifically, Bauer claims that the official Clinton precinct chair manual falsely stated that the doors to the caucus site be closed at 11:30, when, in fact, anyone still in line to register by 11:30 would be allowed in. The consequence was that many Obama supporters who followed the rules didn't get to caucus. (The Clinton campaign has noted, in response, that their manual makes clear that Democrats in the queue could still participate and have said the rest of their manual followed the letter and spirit of caucus rules.)

Bauer also details what he terms "voter supression" efforts by Clinton precinct captains. He writes that the campaign receieved more than 1,000 separate complaints.

There's no question that the Obama campaign is genuinely disturbed -- as is, by the way, the Clinton campaign, whose volunteers also recorded several hundred episodes of ne'er do-welling by Obama supporters and by the Culinary Local 266 in particular.

If the party investigates, the story of the shenanigan-filled caucuses stays alive.

If the party investigates, the story of the shenanigan-filled caucuses stays alive...

...as does the story of whiny ("Tell Bill Clinton to stop lying about my record!"), sore loser Obama.

"If the party investigates, the story of the shenanigan-filled caucuses stays alive."

And serves as a warning to states yet to hold their caucuses and primaries.

Only the public can rise up and say they're fed up and they're not going to take it any more. No more of this "politicians will be politicians" garbage. We have to vote for truth and honesty, or our democracy simply won't work properly.

To call out wrong doing is not to whine, Jasper. To tell the world that someone is starkly telling lies about you to the public, this is not whining.

The Clintons will say anything, do anything, and make any hell inspired pack to become president again.

Elect the return of Lincoln, Elect Obama from Illinois.

Yeah right, except i was actually IN nevada, as an Obama volunteer, and the Obama campaign was 100% diligent in making sure we not only followed all the rules, but that we didn't say a single negative word about the other candidates.

If anything, Obama's campaign was too strict about following the rules. Two days before the caucus, i was trying to convince people off the street to caucus. I sited some polls, and was telling someone that Hillary couldn't win the general election. The Obama campaign asked me to stop, and to just focus on telling people the good things about Obama, because it otherwise, it could be seen as "negative campaigning".

The Obama camp is squeaky clean.

Obama stole Iowa everyone knows it and now he is trying to steal NV. What a sad little man...

I urge you all to pull back from your defensive reactions and remember that we're all VOTERS. Allegations of suppression by BOTH campaigns should be investigated. The Democratic Party should not tolerate this kind of activity from ANY of their candidates.

I read today that there were 1600 documented calls to complain of voter suppression by the Clinton campaign staff at the caucuses. Americans can contact the National Democratic Party Chairman, Howard Dean to request an urgent investigation and to take action in the upcoming primary in South Carolina to ensure the Clinton campaign doesn't get away with it again.

1600 exactly. Huh, that is pretty interesting how things like that hit an exact round number. Fascinating. I urge you all to call Samantha and let her know that she is a full on idiot.

Joshua:
Asking for an investigation is fine but announcing you are asking for an investigation is just old world politics.
You accusing the clintons of lying is just a cheap non-specific stunt too.
Are you going to whine about your guy's whining too?
Obama can refute the charges point by point but for two weeks hasn't.
these are just cheap stunts by obama to avoid specifics.
doesn't sound like the new kind of politics that obama's been lying: in fact it sounds a lot like the ideas the republicans used these past 15 years against clinton who really did have good ideas: that's why we voted for obama instead of the republicans, remember?

let me fix a mistake in the last sentence:

Hmmm. And are you Sad because Hillary has been exposed at her down and dirty tactics, or is your name just an expression of your character?

Ah there is an example of the New Politics: attacking my character? Outrageous! I was merely pointing out that you are not very smart Samantha. I noticed you did not refute that charge. There are never even numbers in politics when there is it's a lie. 1600 was a made up number. You make me sad.

Michael C.: Senator Obama answered many false attacks made by Hillary or her campaign against him recently in the South Carolina debate. The fact that the Clintons have been misquoting Senator Obama has been widely reported in national newspapers and on tv and radio. They have been falsely attacking him since mid November. Attacking policy is fair, but lying about what he has said, or how he has voted is disgusting especially from a former President and First Lady.

Obama's campaign is all about ending dirty politics in Washington with a change to honest, transparent government.

SAD: The point is that calling someone an idiot is a pretty good indication that you've "got nothing" in terms of information to conduct an intelligent contribution to this blog.

Good grief folks...let's not lose the forest for the trees.

Laura has it right...voter suppression is something American voters of all stripes have been complaining about. It should not be tolerated, must be exposed if it occurred.

As an Obama supporter, I would sure want to know if his campaign was involved BEFORE I vote for him.

Besides, these party machines are every bit as bloated and top heavy as unions used to be. Would anyone be really surprised if the state or county Dem party in a place like Nevada was shady?

Yeesh...good on Obama for initiating it. Hopefully, the Clinton campaign will back him all the way in this.

"We can no longer afford to build ourselves up by tearing someone else down. We can no longer afford to traffic in lies or fear or hate." Barack Obama

Vote hope, not fear. Vote unite, not divide and conquer.

I agree with Michael C. Make a big deal that you are investigating is a stunt by the Obama campaign. If he were really "above this stuff" he would wait to find out if the investigation found any wrong doing before he made a big deal of it. What he is doing is no different than Clinton, he is just a hypocrit!

Samantha...Obama has not been misquoted! Have you heard his exact quotes? Or are you taking his word for it? I listened today on CNN and they played his exact quote about "republican ideas" that began his fight with clinton at the debate. What she said was correct. I came to that conclusion after HEARING EXACTLY what he said. Just because what he said doesn't sound good, doesn't mean he can taking it back by saying "no i didn't" He said that stuff, and he shoulod live up to it.

Uh, Samantha I actually did contribute by calling out your BS numbers. Looks like a few different people are calling you out here and for good reason: you are a child. Are you even old enough to vote...How sad.

Sad, why don't you go back to the Billary camp where you belong. This country doesn't need the Clintons back in the white house again. We don't need to go through their lies, "I did not have sex with that woman", or failing to act in Rawanda or failing to get health care passed because of their secretive, behind closed door activity. We just don't need it again, especially after Bush. No more Bush - Clinton - Bush - Clintons. No more. It's time for this country to move forward. No more dirty politics, not from Billary or Karl Rove. And Senator Obama did not steal Iowa. Remember, Billary came in 3rd, 9 points behind Senator Obama.

"why don't you go back to the Billary camp where you belong."

While I appreciate the sentiment, I can't help but notice how the interaction on this blog very closely mirrors the action on the campaign trial. At the start, it's easy to conduct civil discourse, but as soon as someone makes some unfounded attacks, we feel the need to attack the person (in this case Sad) back. The end result is that both the campaigns, and the people talking about the campaigns' bickering, are bickering.
We should try our best to just ignore the occasional jerk and carry on with worthwhile commentary. The difficulty of the task is illustrated by the inability of the Obama campaign to pull the media narrative away the small charges and countercharges, and back onto his vision for the future.
Or as Jay-Z puts it "A wise man once told me 'don't argue with fools/ 'cause people from a distance can't tell who is who.'"

Obamas has been crying since he lost every primary since Iowa, where 17yr olds (who can’t vote in general election) and Bill Richardson supporters put him over the top, otherwise he would have lost there too. The media has told the country that SC is a racist black only vote. So why would anyone other than the only 1/2 black candidate stay there. John Edwards is wasting his time in SC per the media. I don't think that ALL SC voters are as racist and naive as the media wants to portray them. It’s an attempt to help Obama because his camp has made fools of the media. It took voters and an ex-president to bring his terrible senate record, bush/Chaney backing, republican loving, lack of good judgment and inexperience out in the open when the media tried to hide it. Frankly we are tired of obama crying! If he crashes so quickly because he’s getting caught with corrupt campaigning funds with Rezko etc… what would he do when foreign leaders come at him? Run crying too, or call Oprah for help? …Just what we cannot afford to take a chance on. Giving pre-written church speeches does not make a President. And having his wife, Michelle Obama stumping throwing out racial comments is disgusting! No one sees her as first lady material; we don’t even see her as a lady! No one was crying when obama camp was attacking Hillary? And ALL the media treating her unfairly. She has proven that she is a strong leader after all the attacks she has endured and over come. Thank God the voters are smarter than the media and obama give them credit for. DONT WASTE VOTES ON OBAMAS, WE DONT NEED A RACIST IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Obama's spiritual adviser, J Wright gave Trumpeter Award to a man it said "truly epitomized greatness. Louis Farrakhan. maybe for Wright and some others, Farrakhan "epitomized greatness." For Americans, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-Semitism. Over the years, he has compiled an awesome record of offensive statements, even denigrating the Holocaust by falsely attributing it to Jewish cooperation with Hitler "They helped him get the Third Reich on the road." His history is a rancid stew of lies. Any praise of Farrakhan heightens the prestige of the leader of the Nation of Islam. His anti-Semitism and particularly his false insistence that Jews have played an inordinate role in victimizing African Americans.
Farrakhan's dream has vilified whites and singled out Jews to blame for crimes large and small, either committed by others as well or not at all. (A dominant role in the slave trade, for instance.) He has talked of Jewish conspiracies to set a media line for the whole nation. He has reviled Jews in a manner that brings Hitler to mind. And yet Wright heaped praise on Farrakhan. According to Trumpet, he applauded his "depth of analysis when it comes to the racial ills of this nation." He praised "his integrity and honesty." He called him "an unforgettable force, a catalyst for change and a religious leader who is sincere about his faith and his purpose." These are the words of a man who prayed with Obama just before the Illinois senator announced his run for the presidency. Will he pray with him just before his inaugural?
The New York Times recently reported on Obama's penchant while serving in the Illinois legislature for merely voting "present" when faced with some tough issues. Farrakhan, in a strictly political sense, may be a tough issue for him. This time, though, "present" will not do.

I LOVE YOU OBAMA!!!! i hope you become president!!!!

BILL DID NOT INHALE , HE DID NOT HAVE SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH THAT WOMAN , HE DID NOT TELL A LIE. NOT HE DID NOT FALL ASLEP IN CHURCH HE DID NOT LIE ABOUT OBAMA'S RECORD. YOU BE THE ONE TO REMEMBER THE OUTCOME OF ALL THESE DENIAL ..THINK HE'S TELLIN THE TRUTH NOW ...I THINK NOT
