Romney Leads In The Delegate Count (Corrected)

05 Jan 2008 04:17 pm

Don't look now, but Mitt Romney, by winning the Wyoming Republican caucuses today, is leading the GOP delegate race.

Due to an RNC calendar, Romney has six delegates, Duncan Hunter has one, and Fred Thompson has one.

Iowa's GOP caucuses don't appoint national convention delegates, so technically, for a few days, anyway, Romney can brag about being the frontrunner.

Rudy doesn't have one yet. Fred has 1 and Hunter has 1. Mitt has 6 with 4 left to be determined. (4:30pm ET)

Mitt now has seven, Fred two, Duncan one, with two to be decided.

Way to go Mitt!

Hope this gives you some momentum going into New Hampshire!

First state out West, and you've got 70%+ of the vote!

Make that eight for Mitt, as I type!

Jed,

Don't assign 70% of the vote to Mitt. This is a caucus. All that a delegate means is that you eventually got more than 50% in that precinct (county in this case). Nevertheless it is a very good showing for Mitt.

Why isn't the national press following this at all? They are all saying Mitt is out if he doesn't win NH -- yet he could still have the most delegates coming out of NH...I don't get it.

What don't you get David?

The MSM media doesn't want Romney to win because he's got the best shot among all the Repubs at winning in Nov and the mains stream media is a shill for the Democratic party.

Mark is right. the media wants to make it seem like "losing" NH would be a big deal What's the big deal about who gets the most delegates in a given state anyway? For instance, if you count the delegates Romney gets for 2nd place in Iowa, plus his domination in the West, Romney still has a great position going into primaries like Michigan and Nevada where he polls well.

The biggest threat to Mitt's campaign now is the ridiculous high-school flirting going on between Mike Huckabee and John McCain. Will they just get over it and announce that they want to run on a ticket already? Right now it's shaping up to be Mitt vs. the rest, and as far as qualifications go, Mitt's got a leg up on everyone else.

Keep getting the message out their regarding the media. Mitt is going forward with a positive attitude and he needs his supporters to remind the media that their bias in the coverage of Mitt Romney is very transparent. I am a Fox fan but I am getting tired of the negative comments that are being said by even the conservative commentators. People will often hear comments that they make and think that Mitt does not have a chance. Anyone who plans on voting in the next election needs to spend some time looking into the history and campaigns of each of these gentlemen. I am confident in Mitt Romney and I hope potential voters will consider him for president and look a little more deeply into the history of this man. Democrats won't like him. He will win in 08 if he becomes the republican nominee.

To you followers of Mitt Romney - try and be objective , the reason why the media is not putting much weight on the Wyoming results is because of the following ;-
1 The turnout of voters who will Caucus is tiny
2 The number of delegates has been halved because Wyoming brought forward its Cuacus and has been punished by the central committee of the Republican Party for doing so .

So infact there is no media conspiracy or if you want to go down that line on the same logic you have to say all the candidates where in conspiracy because non of them bothered to visit Wyoming .

Even the fact Romney has won decisevely is of little consequence because almost certainly the tiny number who did bother Cuacus were probably drawn from the significant Mormon community .
When Utah has its Primary and it is announced that Romney has carried Utah by an overwhelming ammount - wiil that be earth shattering news hardly .

Accepted a win is a win even in the untypical circumstances of Wyoming .
If Romney wins New Hampshire that would be worth talking about which he should do given that it is in his regional base and given the millions he has poured into it . In those circumstances by rights , Romney should win New Hampshire in a decisive manner . That he will not do . What ever happens next week he wiil already have underachieved . If he underachieves in New Hampshire how could he carry any of the Southern States ?

Maybe, but I don't think so. The reason the media did not focus on Wyoming was because it broke with their precious tradition. Another reason was the candidates ignored it. If the candidates would have visited the press would have followed. That is my belief anyway.

If you want to offer a conspiracy, it would be that the liberal media's darling Democrats were not involved so the liberal media did not care. What would they do if they couldn't gush over the speaking eloquence of Barak "Hussein" Obama or talk about how smart Hillary is. GAG!

I am disappointed that my man Mike Huckabee didn't campaign more in Wyoming and try to win this caucas to say he was building momentum.

Congrats to Mitt for playing this just well enough to get a bump out of it. If Mitt makes any headlines with it in any Sunday Morning papers or on any Sunday political talk shows, the payoff could be tremendous.

Towards the delegate count, the article is correct. My Iowa precinct picked 12 delegates to the county convention without even knowing who they were for. Iowans are not as politically astute as they are given credit for being. All the 350 people gathered together in my caucas wanted to do was cast their vote like a grade school class president election. They didn't pay any attention to the details of how Iowa's delegates are actually selected.

What is the magic number of delegates that a candidate needs to lock up the nomination?

FYI, Andrew Price, New Hampshire's delegates were also halved for having their primary before Feb 5. They have fewer delegates than Wyoming.

And why is a win of "no consequence" when there is a Mormon factor while Romney won Iowa in every demographic if you take away the evangelical factor. Why the double standard?

So, you were saying? Why is the Wyoming win unworthy of attention?

even with the Iowa Caucuses figured in, Romney leads. Assuming everything goes as planned Romney will pick up an additional 12 from Iowa giving him a total of 20 for the 2 states. Huckabee will have 17 from Iowa. In fact after Wyoming and Iowa only one candidate will remain without a single delegate. That candidate would be Alan Keyes.

  • M. Huckabee - 17
  • Mitt Romney - 20
  • F. Thompson - 6
  • J. McCain - 3
  • Alan Keyes - 0
  • D. Hunter - 1
  • Ron Paul - 2
  • as posted in the sidebar of my blog (using figures for Iowa estimates obtained from CNN)

I agree, I don't find it respectful of all of the GOP in WYO that people are acting like it was only Mormons who voted. That is a joke. It was only Huck's anti-Mormon/anti-Catholic friends who voted in Iowa, so that is expected...so, when Mitt wins Nevada, it will be no big deal? New Mexico? Oregon? Washington (250,000 Mormons)? Montana? Maybe even California (750,000 Mormons)? Idaho?...but on the flip side, if Huckabee and his devotees continue to marginalize Mormons, how many will vote for him? Not many. Huck will lose these solid red states, and bring down a LOT of house/senate/governor seats with him.

The GOP can not afford to eliminate all Catholics and Mormons from its tent (Huckabee's crew were spreading the filth on Catholics during the Iowa straw poll, playing the anti-Catholic card against Sen. Brownback...watch out for bigots).

Congratulations, Mitt. Good win. First of many.

    Folks:

You need to decide if you want to be right or if you want to have a Republican elected. All of us have our favorites I'm sure! Clearly, Romney is the one to beat from the Democrat perspective. I predict that regardless who the Democrats nominate, they will win the general election in Nov UNLESS Mitt Romney is the Republican nominee. Here's why: Mitt can win blue states of Michigan (Father George was 3 term Gov), Mass., other New England states plus a great chance at California. That will not happen with any other Republican nominee this go around. Second, Romney comes across more moderate than some of his counterparts (i.e. more tolerant). Can you imagine the media field day they will have on Huckabee being a Baptist Minister and exploiting the tenants of the "culture" of their religion -- "Accept Christ or you are going to Hell!" As far as John McCain -- let's face it folks -- this is Bob Dole all over again! We owe him nothing! He has been one of the influential leaders over the current COngress. We need fiscal change. The GOP looks like Democrats nowadays when it comes to spending etc. Romney understands fiscal responsibility.

Romney is the next President of the United States! He needs everyone to rally behind him unless of course you want Obama or Hilliary in office.

    Signed,
    Wisconsin Cheeseman

I see a lot of questions about why Wyoming is not important, why the media hasn't covered it, and why doesn't the overall delegate matter?

Let me answer in order. Wyoming is one of the smallest states in population of them all and the people there are some of the least diverse racially. It isn't representative of America as a whole, there are very few delegates and preactically no one campaigned there.

This is the same reason the Media has largely ignored Wyoming. The media follows the candidates and there were only three that even stopped in the state once. Rudy, Huckabee, McCain, and Fred all largley ignored the state, leaving Mitt as the only viable candidate to go there, giving him the automatic win.

Last Wyoming was a given for Romney. This is how the media looks at a race. You can't win if your expected. You can only meet expectations. Mitt was expected to win Wyoming so when he won no one cared.

However, Iowa and New Hampshire were also supposed to be a done deal for Mitt. when Huckabee not only beat Mitt, but largley dominated by 9 percent he dealt Mitt a deadly blow. Romney now has to go into New Hamsire limping and facing a candidate who has no where to go but up. (John McCain) McCain who was though to be dead has only gone up from this summer and he has come from no where. Another underdog victory vs. Mitt will effectivley put the injured candidate out of his misery. But if Mitt can win... it seems he will be in it for the long run.

You can go to http://www.thegreenpapers.com/ to see the delegate count. Scroll down to the states and looks them up yourself.

Wyoming has 14 delegates and New Hampshire has only 12. They were both punished by the RNC for having elections before Feb 5th. So were Michigan, South Carolina and Florida, I believe.

In any case, a win is a win and now Mitt has the most delegates. He should continue on even if he only scores a silver medal in NH. Now that he has spent tons of money for name recognition and he has risen to the upper echelons of the Republican nominees, people are starting to take notice and he is delivering (nice investment). The more you get to know him the better you see how he will be the best candidate and make a great President.

    Go Mitt!!

Mitt Romney is financially successful and can probably improve Washington, DC, with ethics, an policy of inclusion and good business sense. As a businessman he also knows how to negotiate and compromise and work with people to accomplish goals.

Other candidates like the religious fanatic Huckabee resent Romney's success and complain that Romney can outspend him. We don't need a finacial failure like Huckabee to lead us.

Further Huckabee is offering exclusion by antoganizing Mormons and Catholics. He doesn't like Jews or gays either. Huckabee is a hate group!

McCain is a good man but tainted by years in Washington, DC, and unfortunately is too old.

We need a vigorous leader like Mitt Romney.

The Reagan like Republicans are coming out of their hibernation to vote for Romney, much to the discomfort of the RINO like Juan McCain.

Romney supporters sure have a difficult time finding out the wins and delegates for their candidate when the press downplays any Romney victory and denegrates him so.

The people are voting and speaking:
We want Mitt Romney for President!
