The Five Stages...

31 Jan 2008 10:51 am

From Robert Byers, a former South Carolina Republican Party executive director:

Denial (December 31, 2007): Duncan Hunter has a chance.

Anger (after Iowa): If Huckabee gets the nomination, I'll just stay home. The GOP is doomed.

Bargaining (after South Carolina): Please Fred, stay in the race till Super Tuesday.

Depression (after Florida): This is the field we have left to choose from? Why can't we have a conservative choice?

Acceptance (today): Next Tuesday, I'll hold my nose and vote for John McCain. He's better than Hillary.

Marc, you are running your blog into the ground faster than McCain can prove his incompetence to lead a $30M campaign for 3 months. What does anyone care about some no name noboby in nowhere smashmouth south carolina? Get some better content. And no many Republicans want competence. Clinton, Obama or Romney fit.

I don't accept the premise of a Party Hack (Robert Byers) that Republicans have no choice but to hold their nose. The conservatives split their vote 4-ways, now down to 3 with the Paulistas considered more on the Conservative side because libertarians despise McCain as much as true conservatives do.

With no Mike Huckabee in the race, Romney would have trounced McCain in S Carolina and Florida. With no Romney, Huckabee would have won S Carolina..

The choice conservatives have is not either "hold your nose and vote McCain" or "As we hacks say, your second choice must be hold your nose and vote for the Hero Who SERVED!!" Their choice is actually 3-fold. (1)Accept 4 years of a real DEmocrat vs. a treacherous backstabber who sides with Democrats, in hopes that 4 years of darkness lead to a rebuilt, invigorated party in the off-years. Work as hard as possible to see McCain is held to account for his betrayals, slurs, and wrapping himself in the flag and smearing opponents as racists and unpatriotic - with an absolutely crushing defeat; (2)Not vote at all; (3)Hold on and see if McCain withers from his physical, mental, nasty character, and temperment issues.

And if both parties end up with badly flawed, 30 years Inside the Beltway types - I can see a 3rd Party emerging after the Conventions - headed by Bloomberg or a noted popular US General.
