The Latest GOP Television Ads

17 Jan 2008 05:04 pm

1. John McCain launches an ad in SC called "Character in Spades." Unfortunately, the McCain campaign has a habit of not sending around YouTube links, so I'm just going to be churlish and provide the link. The ad, oddly defensive, seems to be designed to respond to that fringe anti-McCain Vietnam protest group whose claims are receiving almost no attention at all.

2. Mitt Romney's first television ad in Florida since he went dark there two weeks ago.

"I keep hearing the same thing, that Washington is broken.I hear the people say they think we deserve health care for all our citizens, but not government health care and that hasn’t been done. They say we ought to be able to get a reduction in the burden on the middle class, and that hasn’t been done. They say we ought to solve the immigration problem in this country. It hasn’t been done. If you send the same people back to Washington just to sit in different chairs, nothing will happen. I will change Washington. I will take it apart and put it back together. I know how to bring change. I’m Mitt Romney and I approved this message."

3. And -- did you know that George Will once said something kind about Rudy Giuliani? Here's the latest Giuliani ad in Florida, which seeks to make a subtle distinction with Mitt Romney on taxes and is a preview of sorts for the type of fight we're sure to see in a week or so. The ad concludes with a quote from Romney himself, who said Giuliani has a "great record" of cutting taxes.

Do 100% commercials like this one from Rudy, really work? I read half of the first panel and then zoned out and tripped out on the shaking fading text as it went screen to screen.

It might have more impact if the text was arranged in 2 tall rectangular towers and in between screens he showed the text crumbling and dissolving. That would be cool and fit the Rudy image.

Marc,

Do you know if the expenses for Mr. Clinton's visit all across the nation campaigning for his wife is paid by the HRC campaign or by the account via the former office of presidency allowance?

It seems that there has been no story of the nature of a former president campaigning so heavily. Of course, it is for his spouse, but nonetheless.

"Character in SPADES"?

Oh dear. In South Carolina no less.

Wasn't Hillary Clinton guilty of using the phrase "spade work" as a codeword for racial debasement not so long ago?

Tsk, tsk, Mr McCain.

Mitt Romney attacked Washington in the same manner as GW Bush did when he ran for President.

What did Bush do in office? How is Mitt Romney different?

McCain's ad plays too much insider baseball. Why would anyone who trusts Huckabee vote for McCain based on this ad ? It is a dumb ad and reflects poorly on McCain's ability to communicate with the voters.

Giuliani's ad is impressive, it is truthful and shows the Mayor rising to numerous challenges and making a productive contribution.

The ad is too short to close the deal, but it will keep voters from closing their minds on Giuliani.
